I've been to Penny's Diner in Yuma, AZ, and always enjoyed my visit. Was looking forward to going to this one in Santa Teresa, NM but when we got there we were told they were only doing To Go orders because there was only one person working. This was a Sunday at 8 a.m., probably this restaurant's busiest day. Pretty bad and I doubt we will make the trip from El Paso to this location again. read more

This is a cute diner and appears very clean. Apparently from the other reviews the burgers sound like they would be pretty good. The chicken however seem to be a frozen patty of chicken that was microwave dd too long. I couldn't cut the rubbery thing and asked to have it removed from my bill but the waitress refused. My family visited today and we were greeted by an amazing cook, Anthony. He was running the place by himself in a selfless act of relieving his manager for a much needed break. He took our orders and made our food super quickly, all while being hospitable. The food was delicious- everything was cooked to perfection and incredibly satisfying. Took 1 hour and 30 minutes to get our food. They are very slow some people got tired of waiting and walked out.

Seat yourself at the bar to watch the cook prepare everything right in front of you or grab a booth and take a look at the double sided menu on the table. Stroll through the simple, nothing fancy home style cookin choices while listening to old Rock-n-Roll. Takes you back in time for sure!!! The BLT was just how you would make at home and the little extra kick from the Cajun seasoning on the fries is just right!! I am a sucker for diners and this is probably the cutest one in a 200 mile radius. I wish I could pick it up and move it closer to me! The diner was very clean and the staff was super personable. Myself and two co-workers stopped here to eat after a very long day on the road and this little treat of a diner in Hearne, Texas was exactly what we needed. The fried pickles were delicious and the burgers, shakes and pie did not disappoint. Don't hesitate to support this gem as the restaurant industry works to rebuild itself as a result of the pandemic. That's how it works here Lots to bitch about ..but let's think about the person busting their ass to do this.. that hard work. My family was on the last leg of a road trip when we found this excellently located diner. It is cute from the outside. Once we chose a booth, the most lackluster waitress I've ever had came to take our drink order. My husband was very excited to get a real diner milkshake. She returned to the table and said the machine was broken. I asked what kind of soup they had... no soup... So I asked about the chili... no chili. No apologies. No explanations. I gave up and went to the restroom. Yuck! Filthy. Filthy booster seats and high chairs were stacked by the bathroom. The floors were unclean. Flies were buzzing around. When the food came out for my husband and two children, it was delivered by the cook. She was very personable and asked if we had everything we needed. I watched as she worked with deep focus. She made it look easy! I was so impressed that she served our food (4 people) at perfect temperature, perfect crispness and appearance. The time was a tad extended to get our food, but we understood why, under the circumstances. It seems they may have been short staffed. As for the dining area and restrooms, they could use a more frequent deep cleaning, but it was not gross or anything. If you patronize this business and see Sharon, the cook, (small, petite, and beautiful yellow-ish hazel eyes) please be kind and patient. She deserves a lot of respect for showing up to work for 10 years, instead of sitting at home waiting for a hand-out, like so many these days. I really liked this place. First, it's in a recreated 1950s diner with cool vintage ads on the wall. I came here for dinner with a coworker while staying in town for the night. We were the only people in the place, which really surprised me. Our server was also the cook, which I also found humorous. She was super sweet and attentive, though, and helped us have a pleasurable experience. The menu is somewhat small, but there are a couple of healthy options, which I liked. My coworker and I each ordered the buffalo burger with a side salad (yes, from buffalo meat). The food was delicious! The burger was quite large and too much to eat. Pretty good food from what looks like a local diner. The menu is limited, but you have all the standard diner fare and they're open 24 hours, which is nice in a smaller town like Hearne. The food is pretty good. My friend liked his patty melt and my fried chicken breast sandwich was pretty good. Our waitress initially seemed pretty harried. She came back by to confirm our drink order, then our menu order. As we were finishing dinner, she left our check and the check of the table across from us because "she had to clock out." She then ran the other group's check (a large group) on my friend's credit card. When he pointed it out, she became even more flustered and had to call the manager at home. After a long wait, it was finally corrected, but with a lot of drama and hassle. I initially felt somewhat guilty about giving a bad review to a local favorite, but my guilt was overcome when I found out that Penny's is actually a chain associated with the hotel it shares a parking lot with. read more

Her customer service skills were above and beyond, so we definitely tipped her well. I waited 20 min to get my check because she never came around again even though I had the finished plates stacked up, so I had to walk up to her at the counter and ask for the check. Yes there were more people there but she only kept going back to them instead of checking on the other tables. There were two people working and maybe 3 tables in the place with patrons. We sat at the bar. The waitress looked exhausted (as we were)... but she was friendly and helpful and never let us down. When my daughter asked if they could make poached eggs, the waitress went and got the cook. It wasn't on the menu, but she (the cook) said she would give it a try. Inside it was slightly busy but not too terrible. The one waitress kind of looked at us then looked away. No hello/I will be with you soon. Right when we sat down we saw two gentlemen get up next to us and leave. It looked like their table had not been touched. 5 minutes later another duo got up and left. Table untouched of course. I glanced over at the server who was making OJ and chatting with someone at the counter. I wanted to say "hey...lady...you just lost business/a few tips!!!". Having one server on a Sunday morning is inexcusable anywhere. Having a server that does not know how to keep/disregards business...as a seasoned veteran in the business I can say that it would not fly on my watch. To me it looks like this restaurant just lost about 80-100 bucks off of 4 walk outs (a couple walked out behind us). The staff wasn't professional at all, and it took far longer than it should at a diner for some burgers, but I'll have to admit the burgers were very good. They were frozen but they found a way to make them very tasty.
