The burgers from penny's were great. Everyone I was with enjoyed there meal as well. We were given great service the staff was very friendly and helpful. Overall the diner has a great vibe that really can't be beat especially at 1 in the morning which is a huge benefit because not much else in the area is open very late. read more

Went there for breakfast such a cute diner and the decor is very fun! We stayed at the Baymont hotel and they gave each guest a voucher for breakfast at the diner. We all ordered drinks (the vouchers printed from the diner included 3 breakfast items and a drink). The waitress first told me my biscuit and gravy would count as two items, which is not how it appeared on the voucher. She finally went back and checked with the manager and he said it would count as one. She brought our drinks out and we asked for the ticket as we were wanting to head out right after our food. She told me my drink would cost and I showed her the voucher and she confirmed with her manager that I would have to pay for my drink. I told her I disagreed with that and she said her manager said it would not be covered. They brought my food (1 person of our party of 4) they claimed they had not started any of the other food yet... not sure if they planning to serve my food to me cold when their food was done? But she said that they could not register the voucher and that my whole meal would he charged. I really dont know what was happening but it seemed like she did not know how to ring up the voucher on the cash register and we were the ones that had to pay for the food. We paid for our 4 drinks. (2 of them should have been covered with the vouchers) and I left a few dollars on the table and she was chasing me out the door saying we did not pay for our food. It was a seriously confusing situation and the diner and the hotel really need to figure their stuff out and not let their unpreparedness trickle to their customers. It was very unprofessional and I just hope no one else with the same vouchers has the same issues we had. Not a very good start to our vacation. I would also like to note that our waitress was very nice and the manager seemed to dictate everything that happened. Dont print a voucher/coupon you do not intend to honor. read more

My grandson and I had an early dinner here yesterday. Loved the decor and the music! I had the Skillet; he had a burger. The food was good, the service was good. Food was ok...small diner that gets really smokey from the grill. Four of us came to eat two of us got our food and almost finished before the rest of the food came. Menu items that include cheese was a piece of sliced cheese melted on top of whatever you ordered. This past week we returned to Penny's. Really glad we did. The menu has changed quiet a bit. The prices have increased as well. BUT the service was awesome! The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was really good. Not curl your toes good, but really good. The husband and I got The Monster, which is a burger basket you create yourself. He got a 2/3 pound burger with bacon, grilled onions, and cheese, and I got one with cheese, bacon and an egg. The bacon was cooked perfectly. Crispy but with that melt in your mouth quality. I could only eat half and took the remainder home to our daughter. The husband ate all of his. The fries were good too, crisp on the outside and soft and mealy on the inside. Looking forward to returning, I'm eying that patty melt! Our tab was 18 buck and change. Not bad for great service, clean establishment, including the restroom, and really good food. read more

Not bad...new cook..place needs more money invested in it. Annoying woman with lip piercing will probably take your order..ridculously loud and unprofessional. Curses around your kids and makes jokes about people after they leave the resteraunt. The food is mediocre. After reading multiple high reviews of Penny's Diner, we drove out of our way to eat lunch there for this great experience. The retro concept sounded fun. Unfortunately we were greatly disappointed. We first ordered drinks, water and iced tea. We requested lemon and were told they only have lemon packets! Ok, skip the lemon. The water itself tasted so bad, I ended up ordering a soda. I thought it was just me, but then I overheard the teenage boys sitting at the table next to us say they couldn't drink the water either! Not Penny's fault, I don't expect they control the water, but it was bad. Then we ordered food. I recognize we were there with 3 families, but they cooked the food one order at a time. Even when there were 3 people who ordered the same thing, they were made one at a time! It took forever before we even heard any food being cooked. We watched the cook pull out one hamburger patty from the freezer at a time. 30-45 minutes passed from the time the first person in our group got their food until the last person got their food. And we were the only people there! Several people came in and sat down but when they asked what the wait for food would be, they left. It was lunchtime! They lost quite a few customers. The food itself was ok. One person ordered a side salad and it came with salad dressing in a package. After being there for 1 HOUR AND 45 MINUTES, most of our group had finally received their food, but we kept waiting for my son's order. It had fallen through the cracks, but at this point we were in a hurry so I just said to forget it. He scrounged some friends' leftovers. The poor waitress (she was new) said she would take his order off our bill like she was doing us a favor. Ummm, yeah, we never received the food so why would we possibly pay for it? We all remained patient and friendly throughout the experience , they(the only 2 people working, the server and the cook) were trying, but seemed incompetent. The whole thing was frustrating and disappointing. While the venue had old fashioned charm, it seemed to be mismanaged and the employees were not properly trained. Visiting family that are new to the area and searched for a place for dinner on a Saturday night. Penny's was our 3rd choice but it was getting late and the other 2 places were closed at 8:00 p.m. we normally don't have dinner this late so our choices were limited. Penny's is a very cool style diner. The inside is what you'd expect with 50s decor. Only 2 ladies working and we were the only customers a party of nine. I didnt excect a culinary experience and Penny's didn't disappoint. Our waitress took our order and brought our drinks. The cook was def shortorder cook because our food came out in short orders. We were eating in shifts! There were 9 of us and 3 were served their meals and finished when the next 3 were served. Then the very last were the 3 children in our party. Worst experience I have EVER had. Cook can't read apparently. Waited almost an hour for food that he makes one order at a time, and can't even get those right. I mean, we ordered two orders of pancakes, 2 cakes per order. That makes four, right? Who cooks them 2 at a time??? Good lord we had to get it to go to make our games and it STILL wasn't ready or right. He was just putting the last order of bacon in when we left- after making two other orders. I guess he can't add and get it all on at once. My gravy was reheated in a microwave and still cold. Ugh. Don't know what the fuss is about. Terrible place. Only saving grace was our sweet waitress who apologized over and over and tried her best to get us out of there. Do NOT eat here. McDonalds would have been a 1000% better. read more

Where do I start? I guess I'll start with what was acceptable. The decor, theme, and music was original and beats stopping at a run-of-the-mill fast food restaurant. The food was okay and nothing tasted bad. I actually enjoyed my chicken fried steak and gravy. The prices were reasonable and the portions were generous. Now for what was NOT acceptable. The service was absolutely atrocious. We were greeted by a sarcastic comment about our vehicle from the waitress that we would soon learn to despise: "Nice pink rims." My party and I arrived around 11 am, in between the breakfast crowd and the lunch crowd. However, we had to wait disproportionately long for everything: drinks, utensils, food, etc. We were continually apologized to: "Sorry, we're just really swamped today!" We were bewildered by what the waitress meant. There were only two other seated parties in the entire diner. The waitress also had a sulky attitude and gave short answers and blank/death glares when asked simple questions. For example, a person in my party asked if the restaurant had free refills. The waitress responded with a death glare and a harsh "yes", then grabbed the glass and huffed off. We felt like everything we said deeply offended her. The waitress' bad attitude did briefly improve when the manager walked in mid-meal. In a desperate attempt to improve her service in front of her boss, she pasted a smile on her face and actually came over to our table to check on us. We were shocked at this abrupt change in attitude until we figured out her ulterior motive. She also repeated the "we're swamped" tale to her manager. Also: We were all given PLASTIC UTENSILS in place of silverware because we were told they didn't have time to wash the silverware from breakfast because they were "so busy/so swamped." I literally could not cut my chicken fried steak with my plastic knife, so I had to get up, go to the kitchen counter, and ask for one from the cook (who moved as slow as Christmas). Another negative intangible aspect of the restaurant was the local clientele. They all went out of their way to make us feel foreign in their podunk town thanks to their glares and obnoxious behavior. At one point, a 350 lb. woman walked past me and hit my right shoulder with her large bottom, literally knocking me into my friend. Did she apologize for literally tilting me off my axis? No, of course not. The entire lunch felt like it was Country Bumpkins vs. City Slickers. We left feeling like victims of some TV spoof. We now somewhat fondly refer to the experience as the "Penny's Dining Experience" and if we are truly honest, we would probably go back just to see if the restaurant improved. It has a lot of potential. If you're in Hearne, Texas and are looking for a "unique" and "different" dining experience, then Penny's Diner is the place for you - just don't expect to receive ANY country hospitality. read more

My husband and I stopped here late one night on our way home from Brownwood hoping for a bite of food as good as this place looked. It's cute, quirky, makes you feel like you're in an old fashion dinner. We siddled up to the counter and placed our order. I ordered a grilled chicken salad and hubby ordered a burger. The cook (who moved slower than a sloth) used his gloved hands to take a frozen raw hamburger patty and put it on the grill. Then he took those same gloved hands and made my salad, handling the greens, the cooked chicken and all that went with it. I was so grossed out I couldn't eat it. I ate here this morning; I had the special which was inedible, and the waitress did not seem to care even though she acknowledged that, "there was a problem with the batter". When she rang me up, she rang up the full price & handed me the receipt and then said she took care of the ticket and took the pancakes off... as if I could not see what she had rung up or did not know how much the special was & incapable of simple arithmetic; when I called her on it she scribbled out the pancakes on her order pad & said "see".....I simply had to shake my head & walk out holding my receipt for $7.33. The pancakes we're so dry that they broke into 6 pieces when they put them on the plate the bacon was burnt and the eggs were overcooked instead of over medium they were over well. Not worth $7+ for a cup of coffee (the coffee was good but not $1.79 a cup good).....no tip for her & no repeat business from me! read more

Not a very good experience. Stopped in on our way through Hearne. They were out of almost everything because "it was the end of the month." I don't know why they wouldn't keep stocked but they didn't have Coke, Dr.Pepper, chicken fried steak and a number of their other menu items. 2 of 3 of our orders were wrong.
