This is a nice hole in the wall local option if you're driving through hearne- very casual, family owned, a good amount of variety on their menu. One of my favorite parts was honestly the homemade chips and the salsa- the salsa has a little kick to it but it's the perfect amount. My husband had the carne guisada and enjoyed it- the kids had the cheese enchiladas and devoured it- they devoured the queso too- queso was commented on as the best queso- it was decent, nothing special to me as a huge queso lover. It's simply a melted jalepeno cheese they get and the bowl cost around $11. I got one of the dinner meals, i'm forgetting the name- it was plenty big- the chicken enchilada was the best part so probably would just get that next time. Molly was an excellent server! She was very kind, attentive, and provided great, quick service. This restaurant was great! I had the crispy tack special (Tuesday) which was great. I couldn't believe how inexpensive it was. I travel a lot for work and try to hit up local places as much as I can. This one did not disappoint. It's got the nostalgic old small town feel I love. Food : i will say this visit "it was the refried beans for me!" Never have I had them seasoned so well. All of the food very good and freshly prepared. Service is great. I am a semi-local and we eat here one in a while. Each time has been a good experience. Molly has typically served us and she does a great job. Friendly and attentive. Good enchiladas if you like brown gravy. Salsa is great but chips are too thick and heavy. Tacos are good, and daily lunch specials have not disappointed, so far roast beef and pork chops have been great. Molly is a terrific server, very sweet. read more

Hearne, Texas. Yeah, you're gonna have to google that to see where in the heck the town is. But, you need to try to Mary's El Alamo Cafe. Think similar lineage to Austin's Matt's El Rancho and Fort Worth's Joe T. Garcias. Not as old; just rocking plates since the early 70's. Picked this place to try something new. We go through this town once a year heading to a car club event on the Texas/Louisiana border. Last year, Dixie Cafe got good marks. This year..it's Mex with side of payphone ringing off the hook next to our table. Friends and GF said they never saw me eat so much; basically the ol' #1 with a little bit of everything. Queso tostada chip, beef chalupa, crispy beef taco, tamale served with chili con carne, and a chicken enchilada with "gravy". Rice, beans, and guacamole too. Very old school with no other sauce options; forget ranchero, verde, jalapeno sour cream and so on. And there was the owner Mary sitting in the back with a watchful eye as food exited the kitchen. Super reasonable prices; four diners was around $60 + tip. Will be back! read more

Poor customer service. It's a seat yourself restaurant. We sat in a booth for at least 15 minutes and never even acknowledged. Several waitresses working this evening. One brought food next to us and never looked at us. Another waitress asked others around us if they needed anything, but never looked our way either. read more

Passing through town on a Saturday morning and found Mary's El Alamo. Bummed that we were having to get our breakfast tacos "to go" because the aroma coming out of the kitchen was heavenly! Mary's Granddaughter, Vanessa, gave hubby and me a wonderful history of the 51 year Restaurant. They have a fun "wall of fame" too! The place is clean! And the breakfast tacos with El Alamo's homemade hot sauce were wonderful! The flour tortillas were fresh and tasty. I was a little ambitious ordering chorizo, egg and bean for on the road food! So as we were driving through heading to Dallas my wife wanted something for breakfast so we stopped at this restaurant here in Hearne Texas and what can I say this is very authentic Mexican food. I believe that this food is as Hometown as you can get. Must-try the Tom special with avocados on over easy eggs. I also recommend the chips and salsa very good. I had the taco, tamale & cheese enchilada with queso instead of the gravy and it was very good! Crispy taco and super meaty tamale. The cheese enchilada was a little flat but still tasty! Food was very delicious. My husband had the special of roast beef, mashed potatoes and green beans. I had the chicken enchilada with beans and rice. We have been traveling for 3 days and this was the best food we have had since we left Utah. The chips and salsa were great and we were told it was all homemade. The only thing that may be better than the food was our server Molly. She welcomed us with a smile and instructions for seating ourselves. She was observant of our needs and made sure our salsa was refilled. Molly informed us the restaurant has been in business for 50 years. We can see why! BTW my husband's meal came with a piece of cake, (homemade of course). Will definitely stop again next time we are traveling through. read more

Passing through and based on the reviews on yelp we decided to give this a try. Positives. Service was fast, waitress friendly, the beers were cold and the chips salsa was good. The other. They didn't skimp on the portions on the taco, but the meat was just plain ground beef, no seasonings. Same beef was in the beef enchilada with Velveeta cheese over it. Cheese enchiladas were nothing more Veleeta filled corn tortilla with more of the cheese sauce over it Not impressed at all. Will not return. read more

I've heard good things about this place but I live about 2 hours away so tonight when I was driving through Hearne in a pouring rain I thought I'd take respite in a basket of fresh, warm housemade tortilla chips. Really the four stars are for the freshly made tortilla chips and the very pleasant young lady, Mary's granddaughter, that waited on me. I also had the tamale plate. Three fresh tamales covered in chili with rice and beans. It wasn't what I expected but it was ok. It looked like ground beef inside but I asked and they confirmed it was pork. So it's ground pork instead of pulled pork that you normally think about. The chili sauce is lighter; not the dark red chili. Guessing it was pork chili. The rice and beans were delicious and especially good when scooped up with those amazing chips. Their salsa was more of a red sauce but it did the trick. So, if you find yourself in Hearne and it's raining so hard you want to pull over... turn down 3rd street and get some warm tortilla chips and salsa and grab a yummy praline to keep you happy on the rest of your drive! read more

SUCH AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. My mom was having a really rough day and Carmen treated her and my literally sister like family. Made their day better and a little lighter.
