Traveling thru and according to reviews Hiway77 Cafe was the place to stop for good food. It was! The friendly welcome and excellent service was nice to experience. Their walls have pictures of veterans which was really special. I had the hamburger steak, mashed potatoes and broccoli.. oh and you MUST have one of their rolls. Hamburger steak was cooked perfectly, mashed potatoes were real! My husband had the fish and shrimp, fries and coleslaw ( they have 2 options- vinegar base or mayo base) we chose vinegar base. We really like the vinegar base it was different and very good, believe it may have had some bell peppers in it. His shrimp and fish were cooked perfectly. The only regret we had was not getting a dessert.. no room for it after these two wonderful meals. read more

Stopped in on a road trip since it's such an easy on/off from the Hwy (hwy 77 that is if you didn't guess it haha). It's clean inside with tons of photos of vets. Great staff pointed us right to a table and quickly got us menus and drinks. We knew with a homecoming spot this, to us, the only choice is chicken fried steak and Hamburger steak with sides. Both were excellent, fresh and house made thru and thru. My side salad was a little disappointing but again this is a spot for southern selections like mashed potatoes, cream corn and hand battered onion rings - all of which we had and loved. The rolls wet a little sweet like Hawaiian rolls which were so good with some butter. We left after grabbing some massive to go teas for the road. Highly recommend if you are hungry! read more

Four hours into our six hour trip and we found this awesome place! We were met with a friendly greeting as soon as we opened the door. The walls were covered with pictures of people in the military. My son-in-law was in the Marines and my grandson is currently in the Marines so this added special value to me. The menu had a variety of choices. I ordered the 3 veggie plate, my daughter ordered the 4 veggie plate and granddaughter had the shrimp basket. We had six different vegetables between us (both had the mashed potatoes) and everything was cooked to perfection. The shrimp,onion rings, squash, mushrooms and okra all had the perfect crunch. Prices were great too which is rare these days. I highly recommend stopping here and definitely will stop here next time we make this trip. read more

For quite a while, since 2013 my wife and I have been travelling from Addison to Brenham; and finally in June we decided to have lunch at the Cafe. A waitress greeted us as we walked in and told us to sit anywhere. The pics of the Veterans on the Quonset Hut walls were very inspiring! The menu was somewhat overwhelming!! However, I decided upon the chicken fried steak(which stayed hot throughout the meal!!!) and mashed taters and creamed corn. My wife chose the fried liver and onions, mashed taters, and fried okra. Unfortunately, she has not able to finish her meal and requested a "doggy bag" from the waitress. Me not being a lover of liver and onions, requested that her to go box be securely mounted to the luggage rack for the ride home! A wonderful meal, however after leaving the restaurant, I noticed on my credit card receipt that they charged for " a check out fee " because we used a credit card. I called them when we got home and a waitress who answered the phone said " that's what we do.... we charge an extra 4% to recoup the cost of providing credit card convenience to our customers" . However, they charge the customer an extra fee to process the tax that has already been charged to the customer. So they are making extra money of of a credit card transaction off of the tax that has already been charged to the customer. May not sound like much but, I'm sure it's going into somebody's pocket!! read more

Hiway77 Cafe came with glowing reviews, so I couldn't wait to try them out. Big mistake! The service was okay, but we were being rushed and the food was nothing special, especially the fried foods. The prices were absolute gouging. Even allowing for inflation, we could have gone out for a steak dinner somewhere in a more comfortable setting for the same price. The atmosphere was typical roadside diner...nothing special. They try to ride the backs of our veterans rather than by offering a square deal. The extra charge for using a card was the final straw, because that surcharge was even on the tax. Including the tip, our meal (for two) came to more than $65 Life is all about learning lessons. In this case, lesson well learned. I will never go back for more! read more

In addition to the excellent home-cooked comfort food, this place rocks for two reasons: the staff and the history. Adorning the entirety of the restaurant are more than 500 photos, showing service members from the Civil War era to today. Each of them is numbered and there's also a cool "menu" with captions for each photo. The staff was prompt, friendly, and sincere in every aspect of my experience. This was JUST OK. Special of the day was CFS sandwich, so a CFS plate should've been no problem. It came plain with fries. Server dropped off my plate and left. Came back and said, oh, did you want gravy? I said yes. She brings it and says, oh, did you want your roll? I said, yes, I want everything that normally comes with the plate. She says oh, we just like to ask first. The CFS was very "fluffy"... can't think of a better way to describe. The roll was extremely dense. This tiny little cafe came highly recommended by a customer of ours. We truly love to support our customers who support us so we decided to stop and give them a try. We had no idea what a wonderful treat we were in for! They were BUSY with a lunch time crowd. Even so they were quick to greet us and get our drink orders. Their menu is pretty traditional southern comfort food. We had the chicken fried steak...obviously hand battered and cooked fresh! Leave the knife at home, it was tender enough to cut with a fork! From scratch mashed potatoes and fried squash complimented the chicken fried steak perfectly! Also had the queso topped grilled chicken with steamed (to perfection!!) broccoli and black eyed peas. We ordered the chicken fried steak (which I should've took a picture of) and was pleasantly surprised on how tender it was. The gravy had an awesome flavor and let's not forget about the fresh yellow squash they fried up (to die for) and the sweet corn. As we were eating we saw the dessert's pass by our table, and we knew we couldn't leave without a tasting. To our surprise, most of them were homemade. Hey guys. I've eaten hear in the past several times. Always been pleased. Today however was a different story! I don't know if they had an all you can eat Friday fish night. But if they did it explains the dried out fish we had today which is Saturday! Was really bad! Could not chew it up. Must have been fried a 2nd time. Was not at all pleased. We take this route past this place at least 3 times a year on our way to the antique Mecca RoundTop TX. We have had a lot of meals here and were happy with our experience.
