I want this place to be good so bad. It's close to home and has a lot of potential, but the last 4 times I've been the service has been terrible. Like most small town establishments they rely heavily on high school age kids to help run the restaurant. Unfortunately for the owners who have probably poured a lot of their money and heart into the place it's being destroyed by a bunch of kids that don't have any skin in the game. Management needs to get them under control before the doors close on this place. The pork ribeye is the best thing on the menu. Food is always good & it's unique in its own way. Service is hit or miss. Most of the servers are so friendly & attentive. However, one young blonde was not so friendly & just kinda tossed our plates at us. She was not our server, but maybe the kitchen help. No smile, no remarks when we said "Thank you!" Steaks are gristly, not cooked consistently. One of us had a rib eye the other a NY, both were gristly and not cooked correctly! Sides are mediocre at best! Drinks were amazing! Get the bloody marry! Service was slow and forgetful. Only time we were asked about more drinks is when the main arrived. Entire lunch took two hours.... Ambiance is very nice, we sat outside! Very roomy and clean! I would pass! The food is not good! Our waitress walked past our table more times than she stopped, she never even noticed when we were waving our arms in the arm. We ordered the app and meals at same time yet the meals took at least 45 to hr to come after we had finished the app! Our burgers were so dry and lukewar, we struggled cutting one in half! We had to ask for drink refill and I had to get our drinks from the bar. Waitress never even noticed! They set there so long my ice had melted and a different waitress had put the beer back in the cooler. She messed up my husband's meal and then charged him for the tots that had ordered and should have come with his burger. the steak was so cold that it wouldnt melt the butter that they topped it with!!! Our party of five made reservations for 1:00 PM on Mother's Day, May 11, 2026. we arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and were promptly seated. our order was taken promptly at 1:30 PM and we were quickly served our drinks. After seeing others seated after we arrived, served and leaving at approximately 2:15, we inquired when we would be served. The resturant was about one-third full by that time. we were told that it was an extremely busy day plus there had been an unusually large number of orders. I took that to mean take-out orders and those being seated and served after we arrived were more important than those who had reservations. we asked to see the general manager and we were told she had left for the day which meant the young wait-person was left to deal with patrons who were very unhappy to do the dirty work normally reported and handled by the manager. We were served at approximately 2:45 PM with no apology. we left at approximately 3:00 PM with little eaten since we were too upset to enjoy our meal. We observed the manager's presence as we left. The total bill was $195 which included a 20% tip for the wait person. Need I say I want Be back and I intend to relate my experience as often as possible. Three mothers had their day ruined by this Resturant's thoughtlessness. read more

This is a good spot to get some regular bar food in the mexia area. There isn't much around but the last 2 times we have gone there is always a wait so make sure you go with plenty of time on your hands. We had the worst meal we've ever had at The Old Gin today. My wife and I took our son and his girlfriend there for an early Christmas celebration meal since he has to work nights during Christmas week including Christmas Day. Very few of the food items ordered were average or above. Most were very poor. The steak queso was about the consistency of tomato soup and not what we are used to. The dirty dishes from our 2 appetizers sat on the table during our entire meal and were still there when we paid and left. Most entrees were room temperature or colder including my NY Strip steak. It was obvious that the food sat in the kitchen for a long time before being delivered to our table. Two of us ordered Loaded Mac but received Loaded Mashed Potatoes. I made certain to annunciate Mac very clearly to ensure I would get what I ordered. Overall the food and service were way below average. We used to recommend The Old Gin to neighbors and friends but we won't feel confident enough to do so in the future. read more

I don't normally write negative reviews but we Just had one of the worst restaurant experiences and I would hate for someone else to eat here and be disappointed. The ribeyes are very poor quality and very tough and not cooked well. Salmon was over cooked but surprisingly the asparagus was cooked perfect. Chicken fried steak was extremely tough as well. The side salad was ok just poorly executed and kinda wet like the lettuce wasn't dried. Our appetizers were standard Sysco fried things and a bit to greasy like they hadn't drained enough. That was the food experience. The ambience was shocking. A customer who was choking walked from the middle of the room to the corner before another customer stepped in and performed the Heimlich. It was terrifying and no employee on the floor knew what to do. One was "freaked out " and ran to get another employee and they both stood back in shock then the second one called for someone to call 911 as the customer in the corner stepped in to preform Heimlich technique. It was 7 ft maybe from our table. As the food flew out of her mouth a waiter placed my salad on the table. I didn't even know what to say. I don't blame the restaurant for this of course but I was shocked they didn't hold off on bringing food out and not even a manager came out to check in with tables. It was so surreal and scary. Staff not being trained, cooks not really trying, no management. We ate what we could and when it was time to pay they don't give you a receipt our server just told us the price and ran a card that's on me for not asking but we were just trying to have a nice evening and with everything I felt overwhelmed and was trying to force myself to be happy and I just wanted to go home. Looked at my bank 205$(tip included) We won't be back. If you want an outstanding steak go to the general store in Leona. read more

The food is overpriced, overcooked and underwhelming in all aspects. The service is great if you like to be told "we're out of that." The ambiance is that of emergency care clinic if everyone were waiting on the doctor's opinion, sutures, and a bill. I visited the old gin for a lunch with a couple of my friends. I had the most amazing waiter Luis! though we had already cashed out he continued to check on us and make sure we were good. We decided on dessert and he came back and served us again gave us selections and kept the water flowing. He is truly a gem answered all of our questions with a smile and didn't get flustered when he constantly asked for something. read more

The decorations are contemporary, crashes head-on with country. Big screen viewing from every seat in the house. Yet, the tin brings you back to the country decor. The menu could be better, but not the rib eye pork chop. So far, out of the 3 times I've been there, the rib eye pork is better than the rib eye steak. Most meals come with sides, the salad is big and fresh, but the garlic mash potatoes, they arrive in a small bowl, the quanity is more than disappointing! The food was awry! We started with the Bavarian pretzels with beer cheese dip. Pretzels were piping hot and the dip was good. Large on tap Miller Lite was nice and cold. I ordered the Pork Tenderloin steak with a large baked potato and a side of corn. There was real bacon in the tater, not just bits! My pork was tender and juicy. My husband ordered the baseball cut steak with a baked potato and salas, which was larger for a side salad. His steak was tender and juicy, cooked to med-well. All in all, it was a great experience! I'm going to start off with the food is good. The first time I came here we sat inside and service was a little slow. I understand that you just opened. I came back on a Saturday evening it was just me and my dog. I opened the front door and spoke to a hostess to let her know I had a dog and would be outside on porch. She never offered me a menu or anything. So I sat at a table outside. I sat there for 15 mins and watched 2 different servers walk past me 4 times neither one ever acknowledged me. We stopped here while visiting family in the area. The food was great! The service was good for the fact that they were so busy. But a busy restaurant means they must have good food! The wait staff was friendly and very prompt with our drinks and appetizers. The kitchen was a bit backed up but they handled it like pros and we didn't wait too long. The atmosphere was very friendly. We even met some folks who were originally from the area we live in New England. We will definitely come back the next time we are in town. read more
