This place is just awesome. It's located downtown, surrounded by other interesting shops that you may visit after a delicious meal. I had a burger and fries and I'm. Going back for the exact same thing. Staff were super friendly. There are some crazy, interesting, and fun things on the walls to keep you occupied while you wait for your meal. Overheard conversations criticizing minorities. Criticizing is putting it mildly. I've never heard such racism and religious prejudice. Left with my burnt coffee and breakfast. Glad I took a detour for lunch. The CFS was perfectly fine, light, crispy batter and not heavy. Perfectly seasoned cream gravy on top. Potatoes were simple but perfect. Tried to make room for the coconut pie afterward but the mile high merengue bested me. Awesome service! read more

When I first walked in, I was almost offended by the right-wing decor. It offended my liberal sensibilities. However, once I was served their fried catfish, I got over it. I have been a life-long resident of south Louisiana, and I am admittedly very picky about my seafood. I really wanted to give this restaurant five stars but...the "excellent" service was lacking and my omelet had way to much cheese on it. Also there was loud construction right in front of the doorway which could have been done after hours considering this place closes at 2pm. This hometown diner has a great atmosphere in some ways. They had Christmas music playing and everyone was singing or humming along. Very friendly and happy folk and racially diverse. Also very proudly republican. If you look at the reviews, the one star bad reviews were from Democrats clearly offended by the republican decor. The place is a four star, but I'm giving it 5 to help make up for the cancel culture's unfair reviews. The Mississippi mud pie and coffee I had was 4 star. read more

Step foot inside the Moosehead Cafe and you'll know right away (if you hadn't already figured it out) that you're in the ruby red heart of East Texas. I just had to chuckle at all of the over-the-top political campaign posters, Bush portraits, and right-wing bumper stickers displayed on the walls -- my 80+ year old staunch conservative dad would LOVE it in here! We were driving through town on a weekday and happened to come through right at lunch time. We parked in the small town square across from the courthouse, then came in to order the specials of the day: chicken & dumplings for my sister, chili and cornbread for me. Of course, they have sweet tea. Service was prompt, as in our food came out within 60 seconds after ordering since it just had to be ladled out of the pot. The food was really just alright. I thought the chili had nice, rich flavor, but it was mostly "gravy" with very little meat. My sister's dumplings just didn't hold a candle to our family recipe. The cornbread was a little sweet for our taste, and the side of pinto beans was very bland. On the bright side, everyone we encountered inside was friendly, and the price was definitely right. I think our whole bill for 2 lunches and 2 drinks was around $14. For that price, I'm happy to support a local independent business with this meal rather than whizzing through the predictable fast food chain up the road. After we ate, we enjoyed browsing the knick-knacks and vintage items in the back. There we met one of proprietors who talked to us about his antique books obsession, and it was fascinating to see some of the stacks of WWII soldier's letters he had collected over time. The Moosehead seems to be a community gathering spot, a place where locals come in to visit each other, share some gossip, and reminisce about their glory days. If I'm ever back in town, I wouldn't mind stopping by, especially if I have my R-voting family members with me. read more

This place is REALLY interesting. Very eclectic decor. I had th chicken salad sandwich. It was seriously the BEST chicken salad sandwich I've ever had!!! My friend had the chicken. Strips and said they were amazing. My other friend had the cheesy bacon fries. They were okay, but not amazing. It was right after the election, so not sure if it is always like this, but lots of political signs. read more

So, the first thing you should know about the Moosehead is that the place is run by the former mayor and she's got quite the collection of conservative and anti-liberal paraphernalia. I was actually kind of shocked when I walked in. It's very in-your-face. But... I had traveled a long way and I was super hungry and in need of a caffeine pick-me-up. So, I found a place to sit. I even tried to ignore the giant 4'x8' Trump sign immediately to the left of the front door. The restaurant isn't super clean, but the servers were friendly. The menu is your typical Texas diner fare -- chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, and fried catfish on special. We ordered our food and were immediately a little disappointed. Y'all, it's just... bland and super greasy. All said, I don't think I'll be making it back to the Moosehead. Instead, the next time I travel through Crockett, I might go across the square to the sandwich shop that looks okay and make a small donation to a Democratic campaign on my way. :) read more

Food mediocre & service poor; husbands chicken fried steak was burnt, looked as though over fried on flat iron then battered and deep fried his TX toast also burnt, my Reuben sandwich was anemic with very little paper thin meat on soggy bread. Had to go to counter to ask for eating utensils. Noticed what appeared to be locals coming in after us and being served first. The onion rings and fries were good. read more

This is such a fun little place! It's actually quite large and handles the lunch crowd really well. We took our four kids-moose strip meal: a very large chicken strip that was hand battered, fries, and toast- fed each child with a few bites leftover. We had the BBQ sandwich and the chicken fried steak sandwich. I ordered onion rings with mine-YUM!! All the portions were very large and tasty. Food came out freshly prepared and piping hot. There is a little gift shop toward the back by the bathrooms-my daughter noticed that the bathroom smelled "really nice!" Ha! Anyway, nice selection of souvenir and gift items: handmade soap, cards, wooden signs, and t-shirts. There also is a place to buy freshly ground coffee and candy by the pound. I usually love eclectic decor and old-fashioned comfort food, which is probably what the Moosehead proprietor is going for, but they've missed the mark. The massive collection of Republican posters, buttons, and bumper stickers has not aged well, and was quite oppressive, faded and dusty. Not a good look when one is eating food. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, which, this is deep east Texas, it should be second nature for any decent cook to make, but it was tough and dry. He said the breading was hard as a rock. And, the potatoes were lumpy besides! I ordered the chef salad, and it was fine, though my server wasn't familiar with bleu cheese dressing, even though it was on the menu. So many of these cafes on the squares can be such gems. The Moosehead is not a gem, unfortunately. Maybe the owner could sell the property to someone else to give it a much needed refresh. This joint needs Gordon Ramsey! read more

I was in Crockett for the afternoon today on business, and I needed to grab lunch. I try to eat local, and I spotted this restaurant in the downtown square. I'm glad I stopped. The food was great. I had a grilled chicken sandwich that was very flavorful and perfectly cooked. My traveling companion's reuben was also good. The desserts were excellent--you can't beat the pie found in small town cafes As for the service, my waiter greeted me immediately upon seating by shaking my hand. East Texas friendly. He was prompt, friendly, and helpful throughout the meal. Overall, this is a great spot for lunch. I'll be back at Moosehead Cafe the next time I'm called out to Crockett. read more

Ate lunch here for the first time today. The place has a nice down-home feel to it. It is nothing fancy, just laid back and comfortable. The menu wasn't huge, but it had a wide selection to choose from. I ordered a Club sandwich with a side of onion rings. The sandwich was one of the better sandwiches that I have had recently. The onions were some of the best rings that I can remember, they looked and tasted homemade. The staff was pleasant and friendly. The prices were reasonable. Busy local resteraunt stopped in for lunch while traveling through Crockett. Parents wanted catfish and were happy it was the daily special. Their meals were crispy, tasty, and generous. They also enjoyed the cole slaw and tomato relish served as sides. I ordered the Rueben sandwich. It only had two small pieces of meat, too much sauerkraut, too much dressing, then grilled in butter. It was very disappointing. Service was quick until I needed something after the food was served, then the waitress disappeared. Lots of old signs and kitsch to look at. We had a great breakfast! My friends and I were here late Saturday morning. We had an omelet, pancakes, sausage and bacon. My friend says the omelet was one of the best she's had. The pancakes were perfect - fluffy and light. My eggs were cooked perfectly. It's hard to get eggs whites cooked and runny yolks. They nailed it. Our sever was very attentive and kept our coffee flowing. We were sad to know that we couldn't eat there again Sunday morning before heading home. read more

I fell in love with this place the moment I walked through the front door. Down home, friendly place to dine. Not a huge menu selection but the portions are more than adequate. I felt like I was eating at Granny's table when I was a kid...special was fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans with cornbread. Our daughter loved the bacon cheeseburger and the grandsons split a chicken fry and wiped the plates clean. We're picky about iced tea and theirs is good. Our waitress, Gina, was great...down-home, friendly and efficient. After we ate we bought some salsa, jelly and honey...all local. Immediately upon entering the place I liked it. We Eat here about once a month when visiting my mom in Crockett. Moose head is definitely one of the best places to eat in Crockett. I see people are butthurt in the reviews about it having republican stuff inside. Well guess what it's a small town that's very conservative and it happens to be the republican headquarters of Houston county. It's a free country you can eat where you want no one made you eat there. Yes the waitress does say seat your self be right with you so what welcome to the country you city yuppies.
