Chicken Dinner
Rob K.

It's been at least 20 years (maybe closer to 25) since I last ate at Mohan's. My youngest son and I were relatively close on a Sunday afternoon and decided to stop for a late lunch/early dinner. Mohan's is in a small strip mall and it's a large restaurant with a bar. I actually had the chicken for my high school graduation party back in the day. So my youngest son and I arrived and were promptly seated in an area between the bar and dining room. Our waitress came over pretty quickly and took our order. I had the chicken dinner which comes with two sides (I did mashed potatoes and corn). My youngest son had the chicken planks with fries. Food came pretty quickly. Fried chicken was excellent. Very juicy and not overly greasy. Side order portions were very fair. My son enjoyed his chicken planks. There is a little of everything on the menu. It is definitely worth stopping in if you're nearby. I don't think I'll wait 20+ years again, especially if I'm in the mood for fried chicken.

Chicken Wings

Went in with my 2 daughters on a Wednesday evening. Ordered a salad, a burger and 3 chicken wings. No wait when we came in. Waited almost an hour for our food. Tables all around us got seated after us, got their food and left, while we still waited for our food. When I asked our server how much longer, after already waiting 50+ minutes, her response was "well its going to be awhile. There's 2-16 tops". There was 1-16 and a few other tables. I think she forgot to put our order in. The food is good. The service stunk

a sandwich and fries on a plate

My fiancé is obsessed with Dance Moms and insisted on dining at Mohan's in Penn Hills. The business is huge, with a bar and multiple dining rooms. The menu is large, with diner-like options, plenty of appetizers and a focus on fried chicken. I had a club sandwich and it was solid without being spectacular. It could've used some mayo, but everything was fresh and the portion was generous for a reasonable price. My fiancé's fried chicken was okay too. The breading could've used some more spice, but the meat itself was good. Service was slower, but not ridiculously so. Prices were fair.

Liver with a side of wedges

This place is a classic in Pennsylvania Hills. Most people know it as the "Dance Moms restaurant," but Mohan's has been well-regarded since way before Dance Moms. I tried their (homemade?) carrot cake, the liver (without onions), potato wedges with cheese and bacon, and their complimentary bread roll. I haven't had liver in a very long time. So, when I saw it on the menu, I knew I had to give it a try. I tried the light portion which comes with one side. They asked what temperature, and I went with medium. It was a tad overdone in my opinion. Flavor was still good, and it is a little tough, but not excessively so. The potato wedges were decent. However, I expected them to be crispier. They were also like boiled potatoes with some bacon and cheese on top. The cheese was fine, but tasted a tad artificial. Portion was good but you have to pay extra for it to be a side. The carrot cake was good. Would have liked it to be a little more moist, but not bad. The frosting wasn't too heavy and had a good sweet flavor. Relatively standard cake, costs $5 for an okay portion. The people serving were super nice and friendly. They made sure there weren't onions in the order. And, the general atmosphere is pretty nice as well. There is a little drink shop attached to the restaurant and that is where the takeout section is. All in all, I'm glad I finally tried this place. It has some solid American items. Nothing really blew me away, but the place is a classic and still worth visiting.

Literally my favorite place to go! The bar and staff are 5 . The pasta, pizza, and wings are perennial!

Fried pickles

I've lived near Mohan's for nearly a year but just recently made my first visit and was not disappointed. This place is known for its fried chicken and ribs. My boyfriend and I enjoyed our fried pickles and each of us got the whole wings. The Cajun barbecue is great and their homemade ranch is awesome. The menu is huge and also includes Italian dishes, sandwiches and local favorites. I'll definitely be back.

Dance Moms' restaurant. Never been here, but it must be iconic if the ladies from Dance Moms used to eat here.

It's beside Cafe Monaco and if it's busy good luck finding a spot nearby. I went mid day on a Sunday and after some circling the block found a nearby spot. I think the venue itself is very nice. It's fresh looking and inviting. Because it was one of the warm days recently they had the whole front opened up and that was nice. It seems to have a hometown client base, I say that because everyone seemed to know each other or at least someone else there. They had a food truck setting up when I was there but I don't try it. The selection, while not huge was solid. I decided to try a DIPA and a TIPA and both were decent. The folks working were accommodating. If I get back over that way I'll be sure to stop by and try another drink or two.

I'm a lousy golfer but certainly appreciated a cold drink after walking around the golf course all day. Local Remedy is a brewery in Oakmont. It is in the main business district. Garage doors open to offer fresh air. There are picnic tables outside and they encourage you to order from any of Oakmont's various restaurants. The staff is extremely friendly, offering quick service and great recommendations. There were non-alcoholic options for those who did not drink in our party. We enjoyed it enough that we came back twice over three days.

Off the Rails Barbeque and Drafthouse - BBQ Platter

Their website says that they use ingredients from local farms and suppliers and make their foods fresh daily. Outside the restaurant are the smokers that they use to slow-cook the meats. The brisket and pork are said to be smoked for 12-14 hours. My husband and I ate at this restaurant years ago, but for some reason my previous review is not here. We liked Off the Rails then and still like it. Most recently, we ordered the BBQ Sampler Platter, which consisted of a 1/2 pound of brisket, 1/2 pound of pulled pork, 1/2 pound of pulled chicken, 1/2 rack of St. Louis ribs, and choice of three sides. I rate the flavors of each of these meats at 5 stars and the flavors of the mac-n-cheese, baked beans, and crispy Brussels sprouts as 4.5 stars each. The pulled pork and pulled chicken came with three bread buns to make sandwiches. I saw three house-made sauces--Carolina Gold, Kansas City, and Lexington-style Mop--and they tasted very good. The ribs were not pull-off-the-bone, but they were probably the first batch of the day. We had arrived 40 minutes after their opening time. An employee had tried to get us to substitute the ribs with another meat, but we instead decided to wait about 20 minutes for the ribs to be done. We also ordered Smoked Fried Wings, which have many available dry rubs and sauces, but we got the house seasoning with no sauce. An employee said a chupacabra rub. These wings tasted fantastic and were the best food of our meal. We LOVED their crispy and delightfully seasoned skin and their juicy insides. I do not have a receipt, but the total price for our foods and one soda should have been just under $100 plus a tip. We had leftovers and put those in large and small plastic containers that I had brought from home. (Other reviewers said that customers are not allowed to take home leftovers, but we went on a day with no special prices, and we had enough leftovers for two more meals at home!) We loved the wings so much that on "wing night" a few days later, we returned for the wings and some other sides. On Wednesdays the restaurant charges only $1 per wing. We ordered the allowed maximum of 6 wings, which we again LOVED, as well as spicy collard greens (4 stars), coleslaw (with little dressing, 3.5 stars), and cornbread (4.5 stars). Note that live music is played on certain days of the week.

Food and drinks are ready in just a few minutes and the dining area is ample with clean tables and clean floors. An upgrade of plastic utensils would be appreciated however. The chili was especially good as was the pork BBQ sandwich. Prices were reasonable to add to the experience. Parking can be a problem but there is some to be found on the other side of the street but lacks a crosswalk so be very careful.
