My boyfriend is a big plant guy and we were very excited to check this shop out, but our experience was completely ruined by how we were treated by the owner. My bf gently touched one of the plants he wanted to purchase to fully inspect it before purchasing, but then the owner started berating us profusely. He went 0-100 & it was scary how deranged/out of control his anger quickly rose to. We genuinely apologized to him for touching the plant and for not having seen the very much faded and small sign that was hidden behind all the other plants. But alas, the owner kept going, escalating his anger, and began hurling insults at us calling us stupid even as we were on our way out. Seems like he's capable of being a decent human being to the others who have left good reviews. Wow. So the hours are listed as being open until 6pm. It's a Saturday. I look at the plants that he has outside, and he begins screaming from inside the shop that they're closed. I had already read the reviews about this store and noticed that many other people had been treated the same way. Today, I was having a lovely morning shopping when I stopped by after seeing the beautiful plants outside. My husband and I simply wanted to browse before deciding whether to buy anything, and we made that clear to the man who I assume is the owner after he abruptly asked, "What do you want?" His response was, "This is a serious private business. Get out of here, and next time bring money." He also accused us of wasting his time. Even as we were leaving, he continued yelling at us and insulting us. I also noticed that many of the positive reviews ask people to "be patient with Moe." That's not okay. If you own a business, you should treat potential customers with basic courtesy and respect, regardless of whether they end up buying something. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I felt compelled to share this experience because I wouldn't want anyone else to go through such an uncomfortable situation. Terrible Owner Wanted to buy a vase and some flowers for my new apartment, but as soon as I stepped in I was greeted with hostility. The owner started to ask what I wanted in a very aggressive way. Then he asked if I was going to buy, I said yes because I was genuinely interested. Then I just asked about the small succulents that were by the door and asked how much, he then told me $4-5 dollars so I though he meant the succulents that were a decent small size, but then he tells me that it's a tiny succulent that is no taller or wider than an inch or two. I was going to buy something to not be rude but then I remembered I have free will and just told him I would stop by later. He chuckled and said, "well I talked to you because I thought you were going to buy something." I'm not sure what I did to make him upset, not sure if it's because I'm a woman of color of what it was but was so rude off the back. Would not recommend at all. Genuinely walked in happily since I had eyed this store for a while but am just now living in Berkeley. Ruined my mood a bit and was so disappointed with this encounter. I went into the shop with my boyfriend and little sister with the intention of buying plants for my bedroom and flowers for my parents who are at a religious retreat and I wanted to surprise them with some flowers . I then saw an old man coming out from the back door telling us he is closing soon and to get out of his shop!!!? I truly don't understand the negative reviews - all I can think of is that people walked into Moe's with a sense of entitleme t and were unhappy when their egos got checked at the door. Contrary to what people say, you do not have to me White, or male, to have a good experience. I have lived in Berkeley for 13 years and try to support small businesses when possible. Moe's is one business I am proud to continually support. Moe is a national treasure. For years now, he has so openly and willingly helped me with custom bouquets for a variety of reasons. What an odd experience. I don't frequently give 1 star reviews, mostly because the bar for that is quite low IMHO, however Moe's Flowers and in particular its owner very easily met that bar. I won't bother recapping the experience because other 1-star reviewers pretty much summed it up - the owner is rude and racist, and even though the shop is conveniently located close to campus, I'd rather hoof it an hour in each direction to buy from someone that values my business. I'm surprised Moe's is able to stay in business. I highly recommend shopping elsewhere. When you give the gift of flowers, it's such a positive and uplifting experience for both the sender and the receiver and you don't want a curmudgeonly owner to ruin that experience for you. Walked in because I'm in search of plants for my apartment and saw healthy looking plants on shelves outside. I walked inside to view vases and larger plants, then was asked what I was looking for. The old man hadn't yet gotten a view of me and asked what I wanted. I said "looking for medium-sized plants". The second he saw that I was black (or a woman) he immediately turned me away, saying they were closed. Brother the door was propped open and you don't close for another two hours. Don't waste your time here, and certainly don't give that saltine any of your hard-earned money. Literally nothing on this earth is worth being disrespected like that. Of all the flower places I've ever been to, I've never been met with such hostility and rudeness before. I had just got off work and was in a great mood while I thought about whether to look for a place to buy flowers for Valentine's day. This place just so happened to be around the corner, which was perfect. I decided to drop in and see their selection, perhaps to either buy some flowers in that moment or to come back on Valentine's Day (even though flowers are usually marked up by a lot on that day). Once I walk in, I notice how disorganized the store is and how there isn't a great selection. There were some very beautiful flowers in some containers, but I tend to over examine flowers I buy in order to get what I deem to be the "prettiest" bouquet. I had no chance to even get closer, as he immediately asks what I'm looking for and I explain that I wanted to see the flowers and of course, Valentine's Day is around the corner so I wanted to check out the store. He immediately tells me that I shouldn't waste my time, and that the flowers he has here won't be around on Valentine's (obviously it won't be, but flower shop owners also don't go THAT out of their range when it comes to their selections) and that the price will also be different as well. Woooaaahhh !! Such a negative and pretentious old man to feel the need to judge my own thought process as if I hadn't thought this through either. As I left, I told him that it wasn't a waste of time for me, but after this now I think it might of been. Never coming back to this store again. I wouldn't dare waste a cent of my hard earned money at a store ran by a bitter old man that, judging by these comments, discriminates against most. I can understand the other yelpers. For me, we knew exactly what we wanted. We showed up with a folder and we had photos of exactly what we wanted. From bouquets, to center pieces, to walls, to corsages, to boutonnières. We are from out of town, we called ahead of time, flew in, and talked for an hour. We had to be effective and efficient with our time. I specified the quantity, type of flowers (dahlia, roses, etc), type of leaves (Italian ruscus). He's not going to help you like a wedding planner or wedding florist. You have to figure it out yourself beforehand. Just tell him exactly what you want. If you don't know what you want, or if you just explain the vibes, he's not the one for you. You should also figure out the transportation of the flowers. His prices were cheap, inexpensive but that makes sense because he's not a planner. read more

The owner is so, so rude! Don't come here unless you want to be yelled at for walking into the tiny place. I don't understand why the ratings here are even above 3 stars. I walked in today with a group of my friends because they were looking for plants and flowers to decorate our dorm rooms with, and I was looking for a nice bouquet of flowers to bring to a Labor Day party. Within 2 minutes of us walking into the shop, I had stepped about six inches away of some of the carnations in buckets on the ground, and the owner began verbally berating all of us about how we needed to "walk away from the flowers and look at them from a far distance, like close to the doorway." We were lectured for a while about this for an exorbitant and unnecessary amount of time - we were being extremely careful, there were no signs, we were not even close to touching any of the plants, and he yelled at us essentially for walking in and wanting to buy some flowers. I will never come back again and hope that the owner changes his attitude toward customers coming in. read more

I havent left a bad review in my life. I think most of the time it's futile, but the way this store owner outright berated me today inspired me to leave my first bad review. I was a frequent customer of Moe's for around 5 months before I left Berkeley for the summer, and before this experience I thought Moe defied many of the bad reviews I had seen. Well, believe them. I returned this October to select some house plants, and Moe yelled at me on three separate occasions, shouting at me to move for other customers. I tried to level with him by asking some questions about plant care for some purchases I was considering. He would give vague descriptions, repeat things the exact same way when I asked a different question, and persistently encouraged me to take me business elsewhere. I left his shop deflated, thinking I had done something wrong, but I took his advice. I went to Blk Girls GreenHouse in Oakland and Paraiso Plant Studio in Berkeley. I highly recommend these as an alternative to Moe's. These are black and Latina owned businesses that treat their customers a respect and kindness I noticed was lacking at Moe's establishment. read more

PROFILING AND DISCRIMINATING OWNER THAT DOESNT DESERVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY. I didn't even get to step into the store without the owner profiling me and saying "you need money to come in." I just opened the shop doors and he immediately says, "this is not a public park." I was so confused and asked if this was an appointment only store and he goes, "this is a business and you need MONEY to come in here" literally lifting his hand, rubbing his fingers together for the money sign. I am a POC woman with tattoos and I am not sure which part of that made him believe I don't have money, but it was the most shocking experience I've ever had being so obviously discriminated against so quickly. If this is a business, why would you want to immediately scare customers away. Not even giving them a chance to spend money. Nobody should ever go here the way he profiles and discriminates against. I love Moe's flowers! It's such a convenient location and he can make beautiful bouquets no matter the budget. I came in a rush today needing a $10 bouquet, and he made this one with lilies and dragon snaps. I think his customer service is pretty good if you are a customer (especially a long-term one). He doesn't like when people come in and waste his time browsing and picking up the flowers/plants/etc. if they're not going to buy. As long as you're nice to him he's very nice in return! He's been providing flowers for some clubs on campus for 30+ years! He said they don't but that I could come in and they can make something up in a few minutes. I then asked what time they closed. Moe's has always been my go-to for flowers for all occasions. Moe is the sweetest man ever, and you can tell he has so much love for what he does. I've been looking for an excuse to get a bouquet from him in this pandemic and finally stopped by for Mother's Day. He'll always ask you what your budget is when you walk in, and most people will throw out $20, which won't get you far. He recommends a minimum $30 budget. I opted for a $60 arrangement, and it was GORGEOUS. His assistant helped me handpick some flowers based on a vague description of what I wanted. I felt like I was picking flowers at random, like "ouu, that's pretty, let's go with that one," and thought I was going to end up with a god-awful bouquet, but Moe worked his magic to create a masterpiece in a matter of minutes. Tried calling for a graduation lei price. This Moe guy is literally the worst owner I've ever spoken to. I'm appalled at his reactions and him hanging up. He's super rude and it's not worth the 'cheaper' price you get. He really doesn't deserve to be a small business owner and no one should support him unless he changed his attitude. He asked me 'what's the point of calling?' I said 'for a graduation lei' and then I said 'I just want a gold and blue lei' and he said what is it for? And I said graduation again. And then he's like why are you even calling? People sell them for 65 and I sell them for 35 and I'm like ok cool, then I'll just buy from you and asked if I could pay over the phone or in person and he said why are you even calling bc we have limited quantity... and which point, I said I'll just pay over the phone but I needed the information And then he said 'never mind, I'm sold out, don't come, don't buy from my store' and hangs up... Literally the worst interaction I've ever had... in any type of customer facing purchase. You know I was aware of all the bad reviews and his potential attitude but it's actually worst than I thought. I thought I could just tell him blue and gold lei, get a price, and then pay for it but didn't expect him to be such an asshole. I don't care if your leis are 'cheaper' - it's not worth the hassle and stress and anger having to deal with him. I strongly recommend this flower shop. I ordered and paid for a lei from Los Angeles to celebrate my daughter's graduation. Moe called this morning to remind me that the lei is ready. I've never come out of a store crying because of the shop owner until Moe's. My experience was very similar to the other 1 star reviews. I entered the shop (which was open and had other customers perusing) to buy flowers for my friend, and he immediately started yelling at me to get out without any explanation in front of the other customers. This was following another interaction a few months prior where I bought flowers from him even though he was rude, and I'd decided to give it another chance to help support a small business. From looking at the other reviews, it seems like he's kind to some, incredibly rude to others. The owner is EXTREMELY rude and starts yelling at customers for no reason. I gave a 1-star because I have NEVER seen an owner come out and snap at a customer who was just "looking around". My little sister wanted to buy some flowers around 5:30pm today and the man yelled "don't come here to 'look around' when we're about to close, my time isn't for you", but the store wasn't supposed to close for another half hour?? My sister ended up leaving the store crying and it took over an hour for her to calm down. This is UNACCEPTABLE treatment of customers.
