A bummer. I REALLY wanted to like this place. It's got the same vibe you'd find in a Vieux Carré joint, it even had that kind of "old" smell (not offensive) that "old" places have. The menus look promising for sure. I HAD to have a cocktail, and zoomed in right away on a "Sazerac". Well, the tiny glass they brought me tasted like many things, none of which were ANYTHING REMOTELY close to a "Sazerac". It tasted closer to a Whiskey Sour than anything. I wonder if they sent out the wrong drink-I thought not 'cos the Saz was a "feature" drink on the menu. In a NOLA-themed bar, the Bartender should know how to make a proper Sazerac before he learns how to pour a beer. But I digress... A tiny loaf of crumbly, mealy cornbread came with a cinnamon honey butter for starters. They didn't give us spoons, which would have been the preferred method to eat it. It wasn't anything special. Strike one. I swung with a cup of Gumbo and Crawfish Etouffeé. Wife went with a Shrimp Po-Boy. Order of Coleslaw for the table. Pretty safe selections to take the temperature of a new place. We waited quite a long time for our food. Strike two. When it finally arrived, they put the bowl/plate of Etouffeé down, and next to it, what looked like a full bowl of White Rice. Couldn't see anything but rice. I asked where my Gumbo was, the Waiter pointed to the bowl of White Rice and said "That's the Gumbo". Ahem. I started to dig down under the rice and finally came upon a pale thick stew. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the greatest bowl I've ever had. Yes, chock full of Andouille cubes and Chicken, but very timidly seasoned. If I was given this bowl in other surroundings, I might not have identified it as "Gumbo". Damn, there was a LOT of rice. Progressing, the Etouffeé tasted almost totally similar to the "gumbo". Not seasoned well, and lacking the flavor punch I like in an etouffeé. Even after a generous shake of salt, it tasted tired. And it too, was over a copious amount of rice. Don't get me wrong, I like rice, but... Back to the "gumbo", shouldn't you get your "soup" course before your Entreé? I thought so. Wife's Po-boy had six medium fried shrimps open-faced on bread with tomatoes and lettuce. The shrimps looked/tasted like the frozen kind you get at an inland diner. The coleslaw was very tart and spicy. Again, tasting like many things, but not close to "coleslaw". Wife had one bite and spat it out in her napkin. I actually liked it-it turned out to be the star of the meal. Strike three, and OUT! With tip, the tab came to $90 on the noggin'. Ouch, and the bitter aroma of disappointment. read more

First, let me say the food was fine. We ordered gumbo, two different burgers, seafood boil (one piece of corn but no potatoes but a lot of crawfish), steak and a few other items. The low score is due to the service. Not sure if they were very understaffed today but I'll break it down. 1. Hostess/host station but no host at both the outdoor and indoor area. We did get helped by I believe was a busboy and he found us a table and set it up. We waited for about 10 minutes or so before anyone came over to our table to even say anything. Once we placed the orders we waited some more for the food - not a big deal. We then watched a table who had come after us get their food (they had a smaller group.) Then another table (larger than ours) who came after us got some cornbread - I checked the menu and while there was a side option, seemed unlikely that this was their order. We asked our waitress who said that when we got there, there were no clean paddles so that's why we didn't get any when we arrived. But does not explain why guests who arrived after us got theirs before us. The seafood boil arrives and looks great except we have no plates to eat off of. After waiting a few minutes (there is no "I'll be right back with plates") I asked another server to bring us plates. Again, there is no sort of rush to do anything or any sort of "oh so sorry let me XYZ". The main food starts trickling in (at this point we're at about an hour or so in) and we all got our meals except for the kiddie meal of Mac n cheese. When we asked our waitress about it she said it was coming out but then when we asked again (at this point most of us were more than halfway through our meals) she did tell us she did not place the order and they were "rushing it". While I understand mistakes happen, I would think that a server would notice 7 guests yet I've only brought out 6 meals, hmmm .... She did check on us a few more times during the meal but definitely gave off an air of unhappiness and overall unpleasantness. When the bill arrived the very late Mac n cheese (which was the cheapest item on our bill) was not comped which as a diner I think was the least she could have done. As we got up to leave, she did come by again to apologize and wished one of our guests happy birthday but honestly I think this server could use a lesson in customer service from the teenagers who work at Chic FIL A. read more

Got the pitcher special, 4 PBR drafts. On my second PBR, instead of a fresh frosty glass, she just refilled it in the warm glass. Asked for my tab, since food still hasn't come. My family and I went while in town one day... Umm. Just no. There was a bar crawl going on mid afternoon. Which I actually didn't mind too much, at first. It made the environment kinda fun. A little loud but fun. But the service was suuuper slow. My scallops were undercooked and the corn on the cob they charged me five bucks for was the most anemic looking corn on the cob I've ever seen. As a table seated near us was leaving, one of the "ladies" gave my son's shoulder a healthy squeeze. Don't get me wrong... I'm not Covid crazy but still. My son is 15 and Covid is a real thing. AND... when we were leaving one of the waitresses there offered my son an alcoholic beverage. Umm... did you read above that I said he was 15?! This place is a hidden gem! Maybe not so hidden in Plainfield, but hidden to rest of Illinois! Delicious food! We ordered multiple po' boys- chicken, crawfish, shrimp! Everything was great! My favorite was the fried green tomato appetizer! We also loved the jerk chicken - One of my friend's commented that she will come back to Plainfield just for this!! ( we live in downtown) I must say the service wasn't great! When we entered there was no one to greet us and one server walked towards us.. and looked right through us and walked past us to go outside! Then one server came and helped us after a few minutes of us standing around and she sat us at a table which wasn't wiped down. There were wet spots all over from glass condensation! I love this place! I went here for lunch on Fat Tuesday and on a normal day. Fat Tuesday was crowded and came with a half an hour wait, but I didn't care. It was worth it. They had a live band performing that was very good, live entertainment from one of the waitresses. It was clean performances, too. Throwing beads everywhere. People were having a ball! Now for the food... The shrimp Etouffee is the perfect rice dish! It is one of the most popular dishes at Moe Joe's, and I see why. You can taste New Orleans throughout the entire dish. Great creaminess and seasonings. I've been here twice and this is my "go to". My mother had the Jambalaya and loved it. My best friend and I shared red beans and rice. Never have I had shrimp in mine, but what a tasty surprise! The homemade fried chicken is one of a kind and the best in South suburbs. Nobody comes close. Service was friendly and excellent on both visits. Subtract one star because the only way you can get fried chicken is to order 4 pieces white and dark, the black-eyed peas are poorly executed, we received only one complimentary corn bread when I see past pics of two, and my old fashioned drink was way too strong. I've been to this place many times and the food is always amazing and just love the NOLA vibe. The staff is always so friendly and our waitress Lola was so awesome. She was very attentive and such a kind and fun personality. Made my family laugh and have a great time. We went on Cruise night for the car show and decided to stop in. Was pretty crowded but we didn't have to wait on anything. At this place you can be adventurous with what you order. I don't know of other places that have gator or crawfish. I left Moe Joes with mixed feelings. Many times 3 stars means mediocre across the board. But at Moe Joes it was a mix of highs and lows. They did some things REALLY well, but those were almost ruined by the lows. The fried green tomatoes were perfectly fried, came with a red pepper sauce, and served on toast points. Those were great. There is cornbread served to every table. It was ok, a little flavorless and undercooked. There is an excellent fun large cocktail menu featuring some of the greats from New Orleans including sazeracs, hurricanes, and some non standard fare. I ordered a Planters punch. I'm not sure there was alcohol in it, but the juice was tasty. Served beautifully. I ordered the fried catfish. It was fried beautifully with a nice batter, but the bottom was soaking wet and soggy. Like the fish wasn't dried before dredging and frying. The black eyed peas were over cooked, that's fair we came in at 9pm. I added a lot of hot sauce though because they were pretty flavorless. The corn fritters were not a like a corn fritter I had ever had. They were good, but not really corn fritters. They were beignets covered in powdered sugar with a few pieces of sweet corn in them. They were good and that means their beignets are legit, but they weren't corn fritters really. See why I'm conflicted? It was not what I expected, but it was pretty good. The servers were lovely. On street parking a plenty. Cool concept in a historic building. Dark interior with NOLA theme. Very attentive service by host, waitress, bartenders. We had a late lunch. We ordered the gumbo which was very good and the highlight of the meal. Also ordered crayfish poboy. Not authentic. Served on a sub roll with loads of lettuce and tomatoes on top. The garnish was more suited for a sub rather than a poboy. Should have been served in a softer brioche roll with more sauce and perhaps a vinegar or creamy slaw. The mayo sauce on the crawfish couldn't be tasted. When I asked for additional sauce there was an addl charge. Sandwiches came with free sides but the ones that were recommended came with an up charge without us being told. The Brussel sprouts were oily and burned . Waaay beyond "charred" The corn fritters were bone dry with only 3 or 4 hard corn kernels inside. We would not come here again. A dinner for two at lunch with one rum and coke and a soft drink totaled $130.00 with all of the up charges. We won't return. Not a good value for that price. As an aside please wash the caked on dust off of the plastic plants and wipe off grease on menus. I really wanted to like this place. read more

For lunch I had the blackened chicken po boy with the sweet sauce and cheddar. It was pretty good. For my side I had rice and beans. I didn't like that meat was in it. Good portion size. I decided to have a lunch for my birthday here over the weekend. We had a larger group (9 of us) so I did call for a reservation. Let me start with I was a little nervous because we have a few very very very picky waters in the group. I will follow that sentence with we all absolutely loved this place! The restaurant itself just looks fun without overwhelming the senses. The tables are spaced well so you aren't right ontop of other parties. Every staff member we dealt with was friendly and kind. Our waitress was wonderful! I can not remember her name but it was her first day and if she hadn't said that we never would have known, she was knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. All the food was enjoyed. We stared with 2 appetizers. One being something we felt would be a sure bet, the onion rings. They were very good and definitely something everyone would enjoy with or without the dipping sauce. The second appetizer was the corn fried alligator tail, I had made a unanimous decision to order this so I was hoping it would be good. Not only was it good, it was delicious! My daughter who is 13 is very picky about food. This was her favorite thing we ordered, actually this was almost everyone's favorite and most suprizing thing. We absolutely 100% recommend the fried alligator ro anyone. The turtle soup was very tasty with lots of flavor. The gumbo was the most amazing gumbo I had ever had. Absolutely delicious and my favorite thing we tried. My sister and I shared or main dishes cause we could not decide on what we wanted. We shared the shrimp creole and the seafood jambalaya with the andouille sausage. Both were amazing. We were warned the creole would be spicy and we didn't think it was but it didn't take away from how good it was. The seafood in both dishes were cooked and seasoned perfectly and the rice in both dishes was very good. The New Orleans crab cakes were also a complete hit with amazing flavor that had a hint of spice and delicious crab flavor! The fried chicken was perfect with great breading and the ribbon chips were hits with everyone because we all "stole" one off my daughters plate. My kids and I come to Moe Joes for the Po Boy special on Tuesdays. The food is great and the staff are always friendly and efficient. One of the things we USED to like was the ambiance, specifically the New Orleans/Cajun/ Zydeco/ Country music they used to play. Today the playlist was peppered with loud alt rock that had nothing to do with the style of restaurant that Moe Joe's is. We will give MJ 's another chance but we may have to find another spot. I definitely thought that I had reviewed them since I've been here multiple times. I've been going to Moe Joes for years. Food is always great!! I love their crab cakes, jambalaya and the shrimp and grits. Their cocktails are to die for. I've liked everything I've had. Drinks are strong and delish. My favorite is the gummy bear martini. The only thing that they can work on is service. It's been hit or miss. Highly recommend them for dinner or for drinks. Great atmosphere and always makes for a good time. read more

Excluding being slammed which I understand. Received a burnt Cajun Cuban and a lobster roll with very little lobster and the lobster had the foamy spongey texture of froZen claw meat which it was. Too much liquid came out of it. Didn't taste good and was not worth $24. It was on a piece of brioche toast cut in the middle and "stuffed" as menu said. Smh more like 2 spoonfuls put in there. Flavor was poor and watery. The Cajun Cuban was burnt. To even send that out of a kitchen smh. Our waitress was hustling as they were slammed. Kudos to her. I'm really disappointed for the second time trying them it's just not hitting the quality button. Maybe we keep ordering things that aren't hits. All the signs were there in the beginning that poor service was on tap: Staff walking by and not even a token 'have you been helped?' Offered. This went of for 10-15 min before I had to ask someone to take our drink order. My mistake that I didn't double up the order because I knew these would be our last drinks for a while. The topper was the food arriving cold. IMO it was clear that no one wanted to take ownership of our table because our plates looked as if it sat in the prep window for quite awhile. Fat Tuesday expected to wait! Well you wait all right! Obviously the owner who has been there taking in the monies can care less on this day about the customer! I sat there for an hour and a half listening to complaints, watching people leave, seeing discrepancies in seating of people who arrived after me. I had the red beans & rice with chicken and it tasted amazing. My friend also enjoyed her food as well. Very tasty. The part that stood out the most was the service Erin provided to us. She was amazing. Always checked on us and made sure our waters were filled and even after the check was settled we stayed long and Erin continued to refill waters and check in on us. A Caribbean girl walks into a creole/southern restaurant and orders the jerk wings, what happens after is shocking...... Lol nothing crazy but these wings carried a lot of weight with my review but let's start from the beginning. As mentioned earlier Mo Joe's is a Creole Caribbean fusion restaurant located in downtown Plainfield. Upon entering the restaurant I see lots of figurines and signs, Mardi Gras flags along with other decor that remind of the bayous and parishes of Louisiana. The lighting is darker and more moody than a regular eatery and at this point I'm very intrigued. We walk to our seats and seating is limited but it's lunch time so not packed. Our waiter is very personable and greets us immediately. He is very knowledgeable about the menu which I can appreciate and in hind sight I wished I would've listened to his top choices. Let's start with the drinks, the libations are liberal portions of well mixed drinks in eye catching colors of a Louisiana sunset. The Bayou VooDoo and Planters Punch did not disappoint, these drinks were well balanced and refreshing with an ever so slight boozy vibe, LOVE. The appetizer is where I thought it would all go to hell in a hand basket lol we see jerk wings so I order jerk wings ignoring my waiters suggestion of the shrimp but onward we go. What I was presented with was a sub-par interpretation of what jerk is... I reluctantly continued on and ordered entrees. I ordered the shrimp po boy with the spicy remoulade sauce and the seafood jambalaya. Presentation of the entrees were very good and would you believe the flavor and taste matched the presentation! The shrimp po boy was on a garlic baguette and every bite made me happy. The jambalaya was the spicy you keep eating. The scallops were cooked PERFECTLY! For dessert, we ordered beignets and they were as big as the plate very fresh and super tasty! All in all, Mo Joes was a good experience, I plan to go back but I will not be trying the jerk wings. read more

The food is very authentic and I'm always glad to have this place so close to us. I miss New Orleans and it's food but this place satisfies in NOLA's place. Took family to dinner. My adult son was also a former employee so he knew the ins and outs. Our waitress, Beth,was very nice. She came back and refilled our drinks, etc ..but the kitchen was super slow. I ordered the Shrimp Etouffee and it was disgusting! I've had it before and loved it but this time it was swarming in greasy butter. Also way over priced! It was $23 of rice with a few small shrimp. I got heart burn from it. The waitress showed how nasty it was to the manager and they took it off my bill. She agreed it was nasty. My son got the alligator Po'boy. The sauce was some sort of bourbon sauce and my 15 year old hated it. The bread pudding was floating in the sauce. Definitely the quality went way down and the prices went way up. read more

I mean come onnnn with this food. It is AMAZING. I absolutely love how full the menu is. Even the kids menu has frog legs, alligator & the Krabby patty-so cute! I had such a hard time deciding on what to get but decided on the blackened chicken skewers & a cup of gumbo. The gumbo was sooo good & had a great amount of sausage. My husband had the red beans and rice and it was also awesome. The side of mashed potatoes with creole sauce that came with the frog legs kids meal was huge and we all couldn't stop eating it. I don't know why the complaints about service but ours was also great! Prices were also super fair because the portions were huge. Sunday 5/21/23 was my 1st time eating at Moe Joe's. It was a beautiful day but we decided to eat inside to have a more private dining experience. We started with the Jamaican Jerk Wings- very good, and served with a tasty peanut sauce & ranch! I ordered and devoured the alligator fricassee- I want it again!!
