Monica rocks! Took my daughter to Modern Salon for her first "real" hair styling and we lucky enough to get Monica. My daughter has voluminous hair and Monica was able to tame it into a manageable and age appropriate style. Wash, terrific cut, and blow dry and we were out of there in less than an hour. Not that Gaby needs another great review, but I had to. She IS that good! I found out about her here, and for $25 I couldnt say no. she did have to move my appointment back, but I didnt really mind. When I came in there was no one else in there which was really nice and refreshing. I do have to say I was scared when she started cutting. It really didn't seem like she was doing much. I mentioned how I was worried about my bangs, and it seemed as if she only touched them once. After she blow dried my hair I thought she'd be touching them up, but instead she turned me around... and wow! best haircut Ive ever gotten. I guess sometimes less IS more!! she fixed everything. she found that my hair was longer in the front (my hair is quite long, so that's not very cute...) and my bangs which my previous salon butchered. love it.! read more

My wife had been looking for a place to get a hair cut she used togo to a friend of our but she was over priced, would leave the hair bad and never return calls for appt. Hello! Yelpers! Modern Salon in Pacifica is the only place I will get my hair cut or colored at. I will not let anyone but Gaby color or highlight my hair in any way! For years I went to all kinds of Salons- bargain salons and expensive salons both- but I was always disappointed =/. Then Gaby cut, colored, and conditioned my hair! After that... I never went anywhere else! Gaby is skilled and patient and has never messed up on my hair once (!), and I admit- I am very picky too!! I'm glad to see that word is spreading around fast about this place. I heard about this place from word of mouth myself (my sister ... who heard about this place from her friend). They really deserve the business ... although I'm almost afraid to tell people how much I like this place for fear of not getting an appointment! I can be a bit of a snob when it comes to my hair. I like the way my $60 haircuts look fresh out the door. I'm pretty spontaneous about my haircuts and never plan so I always have trouble getting appointments at my favorite salons when I want them. As a result, I've been unfaithful to my salons and have thus had the chance to try quite a few from here in the city to Palo Alto. On one such occasion a few months ago I decided I wanted a real haircut with style (my hair is medium length and I usually do side sweeping bangs), none of this trimming business. I ask around for tips. My sister, who had recently gotten this really cute short haircut, recommended me to this place and told me to book it with Gaby. I'm always hesitant taking my hair to new places, especially ones that are in this price range. But I figured I'd give it a shot - hair does grow back after all. So my first draw to this place was how quickly they booked my appointment - I got an appointment in 2 days (that was only because she's not in on Tuesdays - book ahead for Saturdays) instead of 2 weeks! Secondly, I've been having far too many $15 cocktails so girlfriend was shocked to find out how budget-friendly this place is. $25???? That's obscene. And last but not least - Gaby gave me a rockin' haircut! Not to mention - she's really friendly, we talked about everything from good hair tips (it's all about conditioner), to her philosophy on becoming a hairdresser (you don't have to be born with it to do it well), to our experience of being "locals." Plus, it's always nice to have a young person who can give you a young person haircut instead of a not so young person giving you an interpretation of what he or she thinks a young person haircut should look like. I love GABY! She is the absolute best & always gives me what I ask for, (I feel that when it comes to haircuts... doing what is asked is super important.) I used to go to Structure in Westlake with something in mind, and walked out of there dissatisfied with a cut they thought would be better on me. (Hello!) At Modern Salon, I walk in w/ bed head and walk out feeling a super star. I don't go anywhere else for my haircuts or color. She is super friendly, and always remembers you by name. She gave me my first short cut inspired by Nicole Richie 5 years ago when she worked at the Regis in Tanforan and I absolutely loved it. I was SO lost when I found out she moved, but was totally relieved to find out that she opened up her own spot in Pacifica. Ever since then, I've tried different styles and have been playing around with color and Gaby doesn't ever disappoint! She certainly knows how to work a blow dryer too, I love leaving Modern Salon with the bounce in my hair and smile on my face! I was looking around for a last minute haircut and happened to find Modern on Yelp. I called and tried to ask for Gabby (sp?) of course due to all of the prior reviews. When I called Gabby answered, but was already booked for the day. However, Karina was available. I'm not one to just let anyone cut my hair...I have curly, crazy hair and it must be done well or it looks awful. I asked a few questions about Karina and then decided to go for it. I'm so glad I did!! She was awesome - very sweet, patient, had great ideas and input about style and color. I wasn't planning on coloring my hair but she was very open to adding more time to my appointment to do so, so we went for it. I love it! I can do nothing to it, straight out of the shower and the style is great. Or, I can style it - straighten it, and it looks cute too! I've gotten lots of compliments on it and several people asking where I went. Karina did a wonderful job. so i recommended this place to my mom, cause i had gotten my haircut here before. when we got there, we KNEW we were early. so we went inside anyways cause no customers were in there. we told them we had a 4:15 appt (it was 3:50 at the time) and some girl at the reception desk (i believe it was karina) said with a snooty attitude, "oh you know you're early right?!) Like... DUH! we were just checking to see if they would be able to take us anyways since no one was even in there!! she could of at least offered us to sit and wait, or nicely said, we wont be able to start until 4:15. instead of telling us we're early, as if it was an inconvenience for her! so we told them we'll just get something to eat, and come back... but then decided to just leave and not give them the courtesy to cancel! since she was RUDE to us anyways! I am a fan. My girl Allie A. recommended this place, and at first I was like, "What Pacifica? I got to go to Pacifica? No thanks." But alas you do what you gotta do when you need to get your hair did. I drove to Pacifica from San Francisco and it was literally the easiest place to find. So easy I drove right by it when I exited the freeway. I parked and was a bit skeptical at first because I did not have an appointment. However when I walked in, a girl a the desk was super sweet. She asked her coworker, Monica if she could fit me in. Monica said sure. Long story short, she cut my hair, chopped it up with me, totally down to earth, and I love my new do. This is my new spot. $30 for a cut and I tipped Monica $15 because I was impressed. I love the vibe too. Everyone is chill and it is not pretentious at all. Horrible place, stay away if you love your hair. I went there to dye my roots blonde and to put on a toner to get rid of the yellow. The lady who did my hear put on a dye that lighten my hair just a bit, it was totally different shade of the hair color I had (light bleach blonde). She put a toner then. Even though I told her that my hair grabs dye really fast she still left the toner for very long time. She washed my hair like 4 times and I was clueless why till I saw myself in the mirror. My hair had 3 shades. Top was yellowish brown, middle was gray and the bottom of my hair was silver gray! She then cut my hair 4" when I told her I just wanted my ends to be trimmed. She cut them so much coz she didn't wanted me to see the color. I spent $150 to have silver, yellowish hair. Had to go to another place and spent another $150 to fix it and they couldn't believe it that I have done my hair at a hairstylist! Horrible ! read more

i used to come here all the time and got seen by all the stylist and always loved the cut and service they've all done. i never understood the bad reviews people posted because its never happened to me. this changed recently. i called little after their hours saying they have opened (figuring like a lot of salons people come in a little later than normal) so that i would hopefully be able to squeeze in a quick hair cut whenever they could, since i have short hair now. called twice hoping someone would answer and nothing, thats fine maybe they were with someone so i give it a few hours . call twice again and nothing. so the third time i go to call just to give up and leave a message thinking that maybe they would call back.. THEY TOOK THE PHONE OFF THE RECEIVER SO IT WOULD JUST BEEP AWAY ... uuhh wow okay . guess ill take my loyalty to a salon elsewhere. shame.. i always did love my hair when they got done with it. read more

I wanted to try a new Salon as my current stylist is getting too pricey and a bit far for me. So why not try my neighborhood town of Pacifica. I looked up on yelp for a salon and Modern Salon caught my attention. Gaby had great reviews, so I booked an appointment. Hey and why not, $30.. a great deal and much more affordable than what I was paying. I went for my appointment and the salon was small, homey, and Gaby was super friendly. I explained to her what I wanted. Short, A-line, thin the hair, stick to one layer.. She did it all.. She did it better then my stylist. It was fast a cut, which I am not used to. I couldn't tell if she really thinned the hair. I was literally done in 30 minutes.. wowzers. Throughout the entire time, Gaby was friendly and sweet. I felt comfortable. My cut was not exactly perfect, there was small areas for improvement (not completely straight in the back, but you pay for what you get right?). She did not use a hair straightener, but blow dried it so my hair was really bouncy. I had to go to straighten too make sure it was even. Will I go back... Yes and I will ask Gaby to use a hair straightener. Overall I was happy with the cut!! read more

this is my first review on yelp ever. but im so happy with my haircut that i just had to share my experience. i love love love this place. today, i went in for my 2nd time with Gaby and to my surprise, she remembered me from my first visit, which was almost a year ago! she was very helpful with figuring out what kind of cut i should get and im extremely happy with the results. and you can't beat the cost: $25 for a haircut. unheard of for this kind of quality. it was very easy to make an appt too. i called on tuesday to schedule for today and it was done. the location is less than 5 minutes from my house, which is an added bonus. i recommend this place (especially Gaby) to anyone and everyone! =) read more

I have been going here for about a year maybe more. I'm not sure about the bad reviews because I've had all good experiences here. I have gotten my hair cut by all three ladies, mostly by Gabby who is awesome, but all of which looked great. They give good advice and know what they're doing. I have annoyingly thick hair and tell them that every time and they always figure out a way to thin it out. They are reasonably priced and give you a nice modern look. Sometimes it's hard to get an appointment or they might not answer the phones but other than that it has definitely been worth making the effort to get my hair cut here. read more
