I've been going to Karina for 2+ years now and it's been great. After going from platinum blonde to ombre blonde at the bottom and natural on top, I wasn't quite sure what to do (From a previous stylist who was awesome but the commute was too much.) Karina worked with me to get my hair color back to a good place. I've received cuts, color and a keratin treatment from her and it's been wonderful and my hair is growing and healthy even though it's heat treated on a constant basis. 5 weeks after giving birth recently she was accommodating and had no issue with me bringing my newborn in and even held him while my color set. I went to this place after reading the two 5-star reviews it had already gotten. I was a tiny bit apprehensive because sometimes salons can be a nightmare. However, I was very pleasantly surprised! I got my hair cut by Karina and she did a fantastic job! Not only did I get an appointment the same day I called, but she was happy to talk with me for a long time about how I wanted to do my hair. She consulted me along the way to make sure it was how I liked it, and I ended up with one of the best haircuts of my life. I absolutely love this place! The decor lives up to its name and the staff that work there as well. These three yong women bring a fresh and young flare to everyone at an affordable price. They are all very efficient, welcoming and professional. It is difficult to find a place in Livermore or anywhere nearby who has the qualities that I mentioned above and driving waaaay out there is definitely worth it. Each time I get my hair cut and highlighted, I get compliments left and right. The best way to get good business is by word of mouth and I will be recommending this place to everyone I know. After trying and being disappointed by tons of hair salons, I've finally found a great one that I'm sticking to. My mom, sister, and I have been clients of Karina for about 4 years or so. We've been going to Modern Salon since they opened a couple of years ago. We were clients of Karina back when she still worked at Regis. (She, along with Gaby and Monica, all left that place to open their own salon. I feel bad for Regis... they were the three best stylists there!) This salon is great. All three girls are very sweet. Karina is amazing. She always gives very helpful suggestions. If there is something you want and she knows it won't look good, she'll tell you nicely and explain why. Instead, she'll do something similar that looks much better on you. She's also great with color! I've come to trust her so much that I usually just let her decide what to do with my hair now. After 4 years, I still haven't been disappointed. (And trust me, I am not easily pleased). read more

I have been going to so many hair stylists who have not gotten my hair color correct until I came here to Karina!!! I have been going to very expensive salons and they didn't get my color right. Luckily, I found Karina. I first met Karina last year and my mistake was not doing my hair then since I went to a different hair stylist (family member). Karina is wonderful! I've been seeing her for almost a year now every 2 months or so and couldn't be happier. She's friendly, quick, and always gives me a great cut/trim and straight blow dry. I have super thick, long hair and she manages to thin it out and layer it perfectly. I've never walked out not feeling great and wishing she could do my hair everyday. So I decided to try out Modern Salon after hearing my mom had gotten a hair cut she liked from here knowing shes very picky about her hair and reading some good reviews here on yelp. What I wanted was actually pretty simple, big curls- I was being thrown a party for my 21st birthday. Usually my mom will curl my hair for special events but with all the things that needed to be done the day of my party I figured I'd go to a professional so my mom would have one thing less to worry about doing. Well first off I called before hand and was quoted $40 for curls not too bad I thought so I booked an appointment--when it was time to leave she said it was $70! $70 for curls?! I understand I have some interesting hair (it was straightened by the japanese rebonding about 6 months ago so my natural curly hair had started growing in at the top) but $70!? Okay so that aside I had specifially told her I needed my curls to last since I was having a party but my curls seriously lasted me from the car ride from the shop to my house (which is about 5 mins). I was absolutely infuriated and devastated since I had spent $70 for curls that lasted for my car ride home so I called the shop and since no one answered I left a message asking for my call to be returned and explained the situation and how I would like at least a partial refund. My hair looked terrible- it ended up looking tangly and hard from all the hairspray I ended up being an hour late to my open party since my hair was wrecked! Nobody ever returned my two calls/messages so I decided to have my mom call since she has a way of getting things done! Long story short my mom spoke with the lady who did my hair (monica i belive was her name) and got into an argument with her. Apparently Monica gave my mom an attitude and said I wasnt getting any money back since she worked hard for the money & was pregnant.... ummm. maybe im coldhearted but is it my fault she's pregnant? no..so why would that even be an excuse?! bottom line was i was unhappy with the services so shouldnt i have been compensated? she did offer however to condition my hair & give me a free haircut but after such a fuss i wouldnt be surprised if she made all my hair fall out outta spite & plus for $70 i could have bought a ton of my own conditioner and done it myself! ugh! -- really disappointed & felt like i was robbed- definitely wont be going back. read more

All the one star reviews on here, or really, anything shy of 4 or 5 stars are truly LAUGHABLE. I've been going to Modern Salon since the first year they opened. Before I went here, I was constantly bouncing around from hair salon to hair salon. I would have to go to two different salons: one for a cut, the other for color. But then I met Gaby! She is seriously one of the sweetest, most professional and warmest people I have ever met. I call her my "hair guru" to my friends, because she literally works magic on your hair!! I've come to her with damaged, processed, box dyed uneven, unruly hair, and every single time I come, without fail, she is able to transform my mess into something beautiful. Tell her exactly what you are looking for, and she can do it exactly the way you imagined! All the while, she makes you feel comfortable. She is never invasive or annoyingly chatty, but she is also always open for good conversation. Aside from Gaby's great customer service and superb ability to cut/dye hair, the salon itself is kept in great condition. It looks brand new still, in fact I came in today, and it looked even better than it did before with the newest renovations. It's always swept and clean, all the stations are organized and it's pretty cute and modern. Ignore the reviews on here from the annoying suburban house wives and overly emotional stress cases, like I said, I've been going here since I was 20 years old and I'm 26 now. And I'll be going here for the next 6 years too! The prices are decent, especially with the quality you're receiving! These people are so incompetent at scheduling. I had scheduled a week previous. They tried to reschedule the day before and I made it clear to them that I had a baby sitter scheduled for the sole purpose of getting my hair done. They called four times and didn't leave a message. I asked why they didn't leave a message and they said "well, I wasn't sure if it was your phone number." Um...you mean the phone number that I personally walked in to give you? Ok. And then Monica asks "can you come in at 1 instead of 2:15?" No I can't, my baby sitter is coming at 2. "how about Thursday?" She kept trying to reschedule. I said I couldn't several times. So we kept the original appointment. And then the next day (the day I'm supposed to be scheduled) she calls me again early in the morning: "are you free Wednesday?" Ha! Forget you! I just walked in and got a drastic cut from Gabby. She's so sweet, listened to what I was going for and even trained me on the styling I'll need to do to achieve the photo look. I gave up making appointments with this salon because they would always call asking if they could reschedule to an earlier/later time so that I could accomodate to THEIR schedule. It's EXTREMELY rude and unprofessional. If I've made an appointment at a specific time and date it's because I've set aside my own time to do so and I don't expect a call 3 hours before an appointment asking if I can come in at a different time. I've also done walk-ins on seperate occassions just to avoid the rescheduling on their part. I would normally just to do a simple bang trim, it was always a quick procedure and I found this to be an easy solution a few times. However, the last time I was there I walked in and asked if they were accepting walk-ins.They said yes so I explained that I wanted my bangs trimmed and sat down. They told me I would have to wait so I started flipping through a magazine, to my surprise the two hairdressers started complaining and said some "not so nice things" about me in Spanish-they thought I was Indian so they were not aware that I could fully understand what they were saying. I found it very insulting and have not returned since. read more

The funny thing about Modern Salon is that their expertise is cutting and styling your hair to look just like theirs. Not saying that it's a bad thing, because their hair is nothing to be ashamed of. I'm always happy with the results. Plus, the $25 haircut (wash, cut, dry, blowout) is AWESOME. I don't think I've found a better salon with prices that low. Anyways, I highly recommend Gaby because she's really professional and sweet to talk to, and she makes sure you're happy with the haircut before you walk out of the salon. The only thing I would not recommend is getting your hair colored here (it cost me about $140 for medium length hair). I don't know if my hair is just super damaged or rebellious to salons' hair dye, but after getting my hair dyed, I didn't see much color in it. Booo :( But the hair cut was still good, and I liked how she styled it afterwards too. Highly recommended! read more

I took a chance on Modern Salon after seeing the stellar reviews here on Yelp. I thought it was a bit of a gamble (25 bucks for a haircut?! There's GOT to a be a catch!) but I figured I'd try it... before I dropped another 70 bucks or more on a so-so 'do in my search for a new salon. I was SOO pleasantly surprised! Gaby did a FABULOUS job on my hair (as good... no... BETTER! than my 3x the price places). For less than 40 bucks, I got a fabulous new 'do, tipped pretty darn well, and got a really good latte next door at Bay Coffee Co. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning! I've been to Modern Salon 3 times and Monica cut my hair everytime. I have stick straight hair and she did a good job layering it. Not great or amazing, just good. It's incredibly affordable since i never paid more than $40. What made me stop coming here was #1 the fact that it always takes forever just to make an appointment since no one ever returns my voicemails, and #2 when I finally made an appointment a month in advance, I got cancelled on 2 hours before. As great as the price and Monica is, it's just not worth it for me to struggle with getting an appointment. read more

Monica did my hair, she was very nice and sweet, but after it was all said and done I wasn't blown away by my cut, or my blow dry, especially since my roots were very frizzy, and I have fine hair! But for the price, I may go back, can't expect too much for $25 in Pacifica. I had seen so many good reviews about this place, I just had to check it out, and I was disappointed. I have been here 3 times now for a haircut. They've all cut my hair by now and they've been able to keep my hair looking fabulous. I'm not sure I would have my hair styled or colored based on other reviews here but I don't think I'll ever find a place better, considering it's only $25. That's a really good deal. This is the first time in my life that I've wanted to continue going to the same place. I don't feel as if I need to request anyone specifically either since they all do a great job! read more

I hate writing bad reviews, but I totally agree with Elsie. I also got the worst hair cut at this place. They were very sweet and nice to me but rating haircut I got, its a total fail. I never felt this bad about my hair. I asked and wanted a haircut that would make my hair looks longer with nice side layers but instead of that I got heavy round layers that doesn't hold any shape at all :((( I lost length and my hair is very difficult to grow. I even asked to fix it, but it didn't help at all. Now I am really regretting to come here. Looking now this bad with my hair not having any shape, lots of splits ends still around. I will not return to this place. Save your $30+tip money towards better haircut place. read more

I like the girls that work at Modern Salon, they are young, ambitious and beautiful. They opened a shop that is tucked away on the northern most part of Pacifica, which is perfect if you live in San Francisco, SSF or if you're like me, Redwood City.....they are worth the drive. Karina always does my hair just the way I want it, and takes me right away when I need an 'urgent haircut'. You will not be disappointed because the girls are friendly and professional. Monica rocks! Took my daughter to Modern Salon for her first "real" hair styling and we lucky enough to get Monica. My daughter has voluminous hair and Monica was able to tame it into a manageable and age appropriate style. Wash, terrific cut, and blow dry and we were out of there in less than an hour. Monica really knows hair and the hairstyle has already "upped" my daughter's self esteem. I am so glad we found Monica and Modern Salon and will definitely be back. And maybe the biggest plus... Not that Gaby needs another great review, but I had to. She IS that good! I found out about her here, and for $25 I couldnt say no. she did have to move my appointment back, but I didnt really mind. When I came in there was no one else in there which was really nice and refreshing. I do have to say I was scared when she started cutting. It really didn't seem like she was doing much. I mentioned how I was worried about my bangs, and it seemed as if she only touched them once. After she blow dried my hair I thought she'd be touching them up, but instead she turned me around... and wow! best haircut Ive ever gotten. I guess sometimes less IS more!! she fixed everything. she found that my hair was longer in the front (my hair is quite long, so that's not very cute...) and my bangs which my previous salon butchered. love it.! read more
