What initially drew me in to Modern Salon was the very reasonable prices and the proximity to my apartment in Daly City. I love how Karina takes the time to understand my personal style, while also provides honest feedback on ideas and what's required for maintenance. She knows my schedule is packed and I don't come in for haircuts as often as I know I should. In fact, when I finally do come in, I feel so bad showing up with my knotted, trainwreck hair. I found Modern Salon on yelp while looking for salons in Pacifica close to my home, since my usual place is closed due to COVID and I noticed they had great reviews. I left a voicemail message to Karina to inquire on a haircut and within 15 mins she returned my call and I scheduled an appt for the following week. To my surprised Karina called me back within 10 mins after speaking with her the first time and she was able to get me in the same day that I called to inquire on a haircut. That's great customer service! I showed Karina a picture on how I wanted my haircut and she super exceeded my expectation and gave me exactly what I wanted. My Hair Stylist that I usually go to is located in Burlingame, Fringe Aveda. But recently my Hair Stylist been losing her touch, so I knew I had to look into another Salon. Stop by a salon in the Westlake area ( because of a friend + reviews ) to get a cut. Boy.. did I regretted. Horrible. I was in tears. Long story short.. I needed to fix my horrible haircut right away. Of course.. I Yelp. And found that Modern Salon had good reviews & so I made an appointment. My Hair Stylist was Karina. All I can say is that this will definitely be my usual spot from now on & definitely will tell my friends & family about this Salon & to see Karina. She is so sweet and she is such a professional when it comes to styling, haircuts and coloring. She will try to accommodate the look that you want depending on your hair. Karina told me that she had to go shorter with my hair because of the style that I wanted & she had to fix the other Hair Stylist mess, I trusted Karina. My A-line cut is a bit tricky and can get fussy with the thickness but that never stops Gaby from giving it back life and volume. Her guaranteed smile will make you feel like your worst workday didn't exist and she truly is the sweetest gal ever. A++ hairstylist in my books! I used to get $30+ haircuts until I found this local salon. I tried it out and now I have to get my haircut by Gabby. She's so busy that you have to book your appointment at least a few days in advance. She was so nice. The first time I got my haircut here she opened early for me! When I'm in town and in need of a trim, I always go here. It's amazing how some hairstylist don't know how to cut hair according to a person's face shape, but not at Modern Salon! Love this salon! I used to come here while going to school in the city. 2 years later, I still make the hour trek back when I need a cut or even a trim. It's the only salon I've ever been to that doesn't leave me with an Asian mullet, looking for another stylist to fix the disaster, or resulting in me with my hair in a pony tail for a month chanting "hair grows.. hair grows.." Lol. Karina is the stylist I usually see, she is very friendly and listens to exactly how you want your hair done. I've had my hair done by Gaby as well and all the stylists are wonderful. The only trouble I've had before was making an appointment since it was hard to get a hold of someone for a while. However, in the past year, I've noticed that they have gotten a lot better at answering the phone. Price is highly affordable also. I came across this salon after picking up food from my local taqueria next door. I called to see if i could get a haircut next day and since it was a saturday, they said they were booked but will call me if something opens up. They called the next day arlund 2:45 to let me know they are free and i quickly got ready and drove there! Karina was so sweet from the moment i walked into the door. WOWWW!!! thanks to yelp I found out about Gaby and luckily I called in and was able to get an appointment the very same Saturday. I almost was not going to yelp about this place because I don't want people to know about it and take up all the appointment times. I asked for a trim and layers. I have very long straight asian hair. Gaby worked really fast and I was a bit nervous at first because it seemed super quick and I was like umm...how good can my hair be if it is getting cut this fast? But after she trimmed my bangs and blew dry my hair, she spun me around to look in the mirror and my hair was so CUTE!! it was exactly what I asked for. Gaby is also super friendly and cute herself. The wash,cut, blow dry was only $25 too! $30 total with tip. Which I find reasonable for the service and time it took. I am DEFINITELY coming back and going to refer all my friends to her. read more

This place is very close to my house, so I mostly attempt to go there because a) I like to support the businesses in my area and b) convenience is very important to me. Out of the 5 times I have attempted to get a haircut, I have only actually been served once (by Karina, who did a good job and I was pretty happy with my cut). This is NOT because they are busy. They actually turn away walk ins - even when there is not a soul in the business. Example, today was my fifth attempt to get a haircut. It is Saturday, 1:00 p.m. I went to the salon and there were no customers, just one stylist sitting at the desk. I asked if she had time for a quick trim, she said no because she is waiting for an appointment. Bottom line with this place - THEY prefer appointments, not business and you are on their terms not yours. Yes, they accept walk ins, but only if they decide to accept them on that particular day. So if you insist on getting the same service you can find elsewhere, you had better make sure you make the appointment to make them happy enough to serve you. read more

I've been hesitant to write a review on Modern Salon because every time I've called lately Gaby is booked. But...I can't hold it in anymore. Gaby is booked because she's super talented, always makes great suggestions (like cutting the 'A' off my pageboy and making it all one length. This will look much better for my face when it eventually grows out long), Gaby NEVER makes you feel bad if you cut your own bangs. She NEVER pressures you to stop using bottle dye, in fact, she's never tried to sell me anything. She remembers who you are even if it's been 6 months. She knows when not to use that horrifying RAZOR on thin hair. She takes her time, every time. She blows-out and styles. She does all this for $25. So hesitant to give another great review since every time I try to schedule I have to wait, which I never used to do. But, again, she totally deserves it. Support local business! read more

I went to this salon about a year ago, after reading many wonderful Yelp reviews. I typically pay $50-60 for a haircut and don't really mind those prices. But the Yelpers on here loved Gabby so much that I figured I could have my cake and eat it too...Great haircut for less money? I'm in! I should mention that I have hair that has a bizarre wave to it, and I'm a wash-and-go kind of girl. So it often takes some time to cut it to get it looking good. Issue #1: So I went to Gabby and told her that I was growing my hair out for a donation. PLEASE do not cut any length off. She washes my hair and starts to layer it, cutting A LOT of length off in the process. I was mortified. I'm not the type to cry over losing some length, but I was really frustrated that she didn't seem to care that I'd *just* told her I was growing it out to donate it. I'm not sure what part of that message indicated I wanted 6-8 inches cut off to create layers. Issue #2: I part my hair on the side, and I have done so for the last 20 years. (Don't judge me.) Gabby asks if I'd like to have her cut my hair so that it can be parted in the middle. I say, no thanks. She does it anyway. Issue #3: The time that elapsed between sitting in the chair for a consultation and walking out was 25 minutes. My hair usually takes an hour. I felt like I was rushed in and out of ther. Not appreciated. The reason for 2 stars instead of 1 is that it was a decent haircut. It just wasn't at all what I wanted. I'm not sure if this stylist is only good at one haircut or what. But I got what she wanted to give me. No bueno. If you don't mind getting a haircut that you didn't ask for and you're in a hurry, by all means go to Modern Salon. If you want someone to give you a style you actually want, I'd go somwhere else. read more

I made an appt with Gaby, at 10am. (Shocker, places are actually open early!) I had a vague idea of what I wanted, and she made it even better. Now if I could actually keep that "fresh out of the salon look" going for me. :( I'm quite picky with the people that cut my hair. Whoops. &then you come across Modern Salon. Gaby is AMAZING, A-MAZING, with my hair. I love, love, LOVE how she always listens to how I'd like my hair to look. She's not one of those people that when you ask to "keep the length" they say "okay!" &chop off 2 inches & tell you about it later. Oh my god. This salon is an absolute life saver. I can't believe it took me so long to write a review!! I had my hair butchered by another salon in Pacifica and was absolutely devastated. I have been growing my hair out for my wedding for almost 3 years. Thanks to the other salon I lost about 8 inches of hair...my stylist was so kind and understanding and dealt with my crying like a champ! She did an amazing job cleaning up the absolute disaster my hair had been turned into. It has grown about an inch since the ladies at Modern Salon worked their magic and it has grown out so well!!! I've been going to Karina for 2+ years now and it's been great. After going from platinum blonde to ombre blonde at the bottom and natural on top, I wasn't quite sure what to do (From a previous stylist who was awesome but the commute was too much.) Karina worked with me to get my hair color back to a good place. I've received cuts, color and a keratin treatment from her and it's been wonderful and my hair is growing and healthy even though it's heat treated on a constant basis. 5 weeks after giving birth recently she was accommodating and had no issue with me bringing my newborn in and even held him while my color set. She blow-dried my hair while I nursed and was unfazed. Highly recommended! read more

Alright, I have really wanted to love this place. Who wouldn't, it is located around the corner from my house, cheap haircuts with coffee, subs and sushi all within close proximity. But, alas I have found this place is just not for me. This is my third haircut at Modern Salon. Each haircut I go in and ask for something fun, funky and hip (I even bring photos with me). I have straight hair, it is very easy to cut. Each time I end up with safe, boring hair that would fit a soccer mom better than a cutting edge marketing rep. The cuts are decent, I will give them that and the girls are, in a word, nice. But when I ask for short, textured layers in my long hair I don't expect my hair to look like a bob. When I tell a stylist that I am a wash wear sorta girl and ask for the hair not to be over styled, I don't expect to sit in the chair for 30 minutes while my hair gets blow dried and curled under with a brush. This place is just not my cup of tea. If you are looking for safe, styled hair from a stylist that will not listen to you for a small price you may appreciate this place. So! Where should I start? I read all of the wonderful reviews written by my co-yelpers, and decided to pop in and have a try. Now I haven't gotten a "proper" haircut in oh so long, and am not used to spending a lot on my hair, so I decided, what with all of the positive feedback Modern Salon is getting, why not, I should give it a go. So for the backstory, the cut I wanted is similar to Anne Hathaway's in The Devil Wears Prada, with the thick, dense bangs coming down and longer layers shaping my face to below-shoulder length. I have long, black, straight hair, so this seemed ideal and reasonable. As for the service, from the get-go everyone has been super nice and accommodating, from the person I set up an appointment with to Monica, who had cut my hair. She asked me what I had wanted down to the detail - the length (obviously), the style, the look, what have you. She had taken the time to make sure that her cuts were angled correctly and not skewed. And I have to say, I got exactly what I asked for. Which is phenomenal considering the last person I had do my hair had basically told me that he was going to go a whole other direction. So long story short, I absolutely love Modern Salon, I love Monica, and I love the cut she gave me, which was exactly what I wanted. And I have to say that the price, above all, made it a steal. read more

Two weeks ago I was very indecisive on if I wanted to get bangs. I was in need of something new, but I was uncertain if bangs would look good on me. I had the same hairstyle for years and my hair finally grew to a length that I was very happy with. I decided that I was going to get a haircut because I needed a change before the fall semester started. I hadn't cut my hair since 2010 so I had to turn to Yelp to find a trustworthy salon. I called a few salons in the Daly City area, but none of them were free in the early morning/afternoon. I then came across the Modern Salon and I began to read all of the reviews and I was very pleased with what everyone was saying so I called immediately. I believe it was Gabby who picked up the phone and she was very polite and she was able to schedule me at a time that worked for me with Karina. I came in a few minutes early and both Karina and Gabby were there. Karina quickly introduced herself to me once she knew i was her client. She was really nice and sweet and I trusted her knowledge on hair because I was definitely hesitant on if I wanted bangs. I told her I wanted to trim my hair, but to keep my length. I mentioned to her that I did want bangs, but I was not sure. I asked for her opinion on if I could pull it off and she explained how it would work for me since I had enough space on my forehead lol she said it really nicely so I was not offended haha Karina suggested that she could put my layers in and along the way so I could decide if I want the bangs or not, which was a great idea. She did wash my hair first before she cut it. Once she was done cutting my hair she asked if I wanted the bangs still and I told her to go for it since I was in need of something new... and if I hated them then HEY they would grow out anyways. I was definitely scared of how it would look, but in the end I LOVED it and I still do. I thought I would keep the bangs until they would grow out into sideswept bangs, but I think I will keep trimming them. Karina was great! She kept my hair long while adding in the layers and I love playing around with my bangs and various hairstyles now. Gaby is amazing ! i've only gone to her twice but between cuts was months and she still remebered me ! that's crazy ! she works super fast is totally friendly and adorable ! She never yells at you for dying your own hair and even if she's disguisted by the horrible condition your hair is in (like she most def should have been with mine) she takes it very professionally and doesn't put up a tiff about how you really should get it cut more often and what not. my hair has come out cute both times and yes i am trying to keep up on it !! best $25 ever spent ! read more

My friend Jean recommended this place to me for a haircut last month. I noticed how fantastic her haircut looked one night at dinner, so I asked her where she got it done. Modern Salon. The next day I scheduled my appointment. After leaving my former hairdresser of 4 years when I moved from San Diego, I'll admit I was a little bit anxious about coming here. If I hadn't been told about this place, I'm sure I would have overlooked it. It's in Pacifica, for one. And it's tucked away in the corner of a really small plaza. As I recall, I drove right past it. I walked in, and a girl who looked about my age greeted me. As it turns out, I also had my appointment with her. Her name was Gaby. She cut my hair exactly how I wanted, and I was also impressed with the way she blow dried and styled my hair. (I hate when people style your hair with too much product and leave you with that pouf and too much volume!) The whole process took about 30 minutes. Half the time I usually spend in a salon, and at half the price! The whole thing - shampoo, cut, style - cost me $30 including tip. I'll definitely be back. read more

Why get $40 haircuts when you can come here? I got my hair cut by Karina in January. Blunt bangs are a style that's really hard to cut, but she did it wonderfully (I brought in a picture of Zooey Deschanel :)) without making me look like a 5 year old or strange. She also styled by hair afterward making it looking more lively and voluminous than my flat, dry hair. She didn't use any products, just a blow dryer and a brush! (Well she sprayed heat protection before straightening my bangs a bit.) The cut lasted a while and grew out very nicely. You have to call by appointment though because its only run by three people and they're always busy. If you don't know what you want exactly, I would suggest bringing a photograph. read more

I was postponing my haircuts to every 2 years because of this but since I started coming here, I've actually looked forward to my hair appointments. I have complete trust in Karina when it comes to my hair. She always listens to what you want and is very good with her technique and care advice. Some members of a group I belong to recommended Modern Salon and then I read the reviews on Yelp. I made an appointment with Gaby. She was super-nice and I LOVE my new hair cut!! I will definitely be going back to her again. My only complaint was the cost. It was $115 to color my hair, which I think was way too much. The cut itself was only $25--nice! read more
