This is what I get for cheating on my nail tech. The salon itself is a nice, clean atmosphere however the individual who did my nails obviously did not know what they were doing. I needed long coffin acrylic nails with no polish. The young man with curly highlighted hair was my tech. He had black & white designed nails on his left hand which I completed on, so I figured he knew what he was doing...boy, was I wrong. While fitting the tips on my nails he could not find any to fit my thumbs. He cut the thumb tips in the middle in order to fit properly. I have NEVER needed this method done in the past at ANY other salon I've ever gone to over the years. He took a long time filing, and shaping. He barely buffed the nails so they were difficult to polish or style the design I wanted a friend to do. I had to purchase a buffer in order to get a smoother surface. I used a nude polish after, however in doing so it seems to make all the problems stand out more. The nails on each hand DO NOT MATCH, which irritates me mostly. My original nails are the same size, so this issue falls on either the nail techs inexperience or simply a rush job. On top of everything, a THICK acrylic drip is on one of the thumbs that I have to carefully file because if I clip it the whole nail will crack. I did not have time to address these issues. I would've needed a whole new set to fix everything. To add insult to injury I unfortunately paid $65...a waste! Whelp, it is what it is. Had an alright experience. My pedicure went well and relaxing. She even gave me a massage on my legs while doing that. The service was great, however; when I got home I notice that none of my nails had been covered from the side which was disappointing. I did a gel pedicure and I expected better than this. Once I actually got close up I could see not even the gel was applied right (as you can see in the pictures). Overall, great service but poor quality on my nails. My mistake: I ignored the bad reviews and decided to give them a try because they are located near my home. Even though I had called earlier in the day and made an appointment, I was kept waiting for more than 10 min before being taken to a station. Once there, the tech wrapped my finger tips with cotton soaked in nail polish remover, and then wrapped my fingers, (together, not individually,) in foil like mittens. I've been getting gel manicures for over a year and have never been to a salon where they don't just soak and wrap each fingertip individually to remove polish. So, there I sat, with not only my nails soaking in polish remover but my entire fingers. The tech then left me sitting for 15 min while he finished with another customer. Once he finally came back to my station, he apologized about making me wait, stating the the previous customer had wanted very difficult artwork. He did an adequate manicure but the polish job was bumpy and one nail ended up with a large area that was dull due to being touched with polish remover. Within two days, the polish began to wear off at the tips of my nails. I also had my eyebrows waxed by the owner of the salon once my nails were done. The shaping was lovely but the scab that I ended up with from having a layer of eyelid skin removed made me look a bit like I had been in some kind of accident. There are a lot of salons relatively close by. Please, save yourself some frustration, and possibly an injury, and try one of those. This salon should be avoided. read more

If I could put zero stars I would. I asked to get dip. They did a horrible job. First off they left me soaking in acetone for at least 30 minutes. They kept switching people and going back and forth between people. The table was dusty from other nails I'm guessing the floor under the table was filthy with clipped nails from other clients. The owner was very rude to me after I asked her if she was done with me, when she said she was done I was in shock. I have been getting dip for a long time and never had such a sloppy job. read more

Today I had a pedicure and eye brow wax. Aside from the owner doing the wax, which is not normal, she did it right out front of everyone, at the front of the store and not in the back room, as has been done in the past. To make matters worse, she clearly is not licensed or experienced in doing waxing since she bruised my eye because she waxed the lid!! I've had my eyebrows done there before, never from her mind you, as well as other salons and spas over two decades and I've never had this happen. I will NEVER come back again!!! read more

I have been going to Modern Nails for the last 8 years and absolutely love this place! Nina is the best nail technician and does great solar nails for me every time I come in. Although they welcome walk ins with open arms, I recommend calling beforehand to make sure that Nina is available as she is a talented woman in high demand! I've also gotten my fair share of pedicures here by the other employees and have never been dissatisfied with the service, there are also a lot of colors to choose from which I really love since I'm all about changing it up each time. I really don't understand where all these poor reviews are coming from, I've never been disappointed with this place. If this place has bad reviews because they were busy or things took a while, then CALL THEM AND SET UP AN APPOINTMENT!!! It's really not that hard to do that people. The employees here really want you to enjoy your experience and are very kind, but if they're busy when you try to walk in then try planning in advance next time. read more

THIS WAS THE WORST NAIL PLACE I'VE EVER BEEN TOO IN MY LIFE! First, the guy cut my toe with the calluses remover TWICE. Second, the lady at the desk was coughing so much, AND I saw a big black spider on the floor. Third, he messed up on my nail and almost didn't give me another coat so I had to ask him twice for another one. This was my first time at this salon and my experience was not great. To start, I noticed the cuticle cutter was not clean and still had someone else's cuticle on them, so I had to request they use a new, clean one. Second, the manicure wasn't great. Lastly, they didn't let me know ahead of time that they were only taking cash, which I didn't have on me - so I had to go find an ATM to get cash to pay. That is an inconvenience and forces people to pay ATM fees unplanned. The only reason they get a second star is because the guy who did the manicure was kind and you could tell he was trying to do a good job. read more

This place is anything but modern. Couldn't do simple French, when asked for something else - took forever while complaining and doing an extremely poor job. If you want your nails to be done badly and have them flawed after you leave the salon due to horrible top coat - this place is for you. It's also dirty and everything is old. Stay away. read more

I went to modern nails to get a pedicure and gel nails I told him when I walked in the door that I did not want dip anymore I wanted to go back to gel. They did dip and told me that I told them that. I did not ,I told him many times I want to get gel nails. Nina was so argumentative and rude about everything. I will never go back there and I would not recommend it to anybody. And I don't like that they keep talking in their language and you have no idea what they're saying. I can't help but feel that they're talking about me and that's very uncomfortable. 3 stars because I am torn. Ann is great at acrylics for those of us not able to grow our own pretty nails. Thin, natural looking, and no lifting or cracking. Ann's mom is fabulous at Pedis! Love her!! But... When Ann isn't there and you stop by or call Nina answers. Nina then tells you all about how she "better than Ann", "taught Ann everything", etc. It's uncomfortable to have someone bashing their own Niece constantly when she isn't there. And Nina does not do a good job. Thick, chunky looking, uneven, and they lift within a few days each time. I had to move on as much as I like Ann because it was just too much to deal with Nina if Ann wasn't there. :( read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. They were rude. My nails look like crap and have yucky and unsightly lumps and "boogers" in them. They rushed my full set so much that all manicure givens were not done. Asking desired length, soaking and pushing back cuticles, polishing them smooth, and decent application of finish gloss. When I asked her to remove a nasty lump she hastily filed it off and a day later my nail cracked in that exact spot. I asked for my money back a week later and they refused and told to come in for a repair but I truly do not want them to touch my nails after being rudely treated for asking a simple "booger" to be removed the first time. I've had some really great experiences here and I've had some terrible experiences here. They key is - in my opinion - to make an appointment with either Karen or Anne. Every time I've gone in to have something done (acrylic nails, gel polish, pedicure, etc) by someone other than Karen or Anne, I've been sorely disappointed. Shellac always peels off after a few days. This is the fourth time I have had my shellac peel at this location. I have always used the same shellac colour at this location and at yaletown nails. It's very interesting that my nails NEVER peel when I get it done at yaletown nails. I also find the staff very rude and dismissive when I come back to show them the peeling. They always make up some excuse so that they do not need to fix it. read more

Modern Nails is great. The ladies are sweet and they do a good job. I get gel manicures and they last a full two weeks. If I'm in a rush and don't have time after work I go to a place on my lunch hour. If I'm lucky it lasts 1.5 weeks. Modern definitely takes more time and does a better job. read more

after paying 35 dollars with a 10 dollar tip I had acrylic polish painted on my toes. My one big toe does not have a toenail so she just painted the skin and it looked great.After about 6 days the polish fell of the toenail but the rest of the nails still looked good. As i was going to an event that weekend i stopped in to see if they could re polish that nail.(I was willing to pay) OMG you would of thought I was asking for brain surgery. All the women gathered around and started speaking in very excited tones. I pointed to the lady that preformed the pedicure and she just shrugged her shoulders. They did not want to help me. Long story short. I have been coming her for years and watched the place go down hill the last couple visits. Not only was my last visit unpleasant ,I was traumatized and will never go back. It was packed ,ok fine. But my tech was rushing me so much that she cut my big toe so badly ,it would not stop bleeding with applied pressure or the spay stuff they use. She then took her SUPER GLUE out of her desk and stuck it into my cut (blood and all) and glued my toe back together. Then returned the blood contaminated glue stick to her desk where she does nails. During this there is a 2 year old that runs amuck in the salon that belongs to one of the tech's. He has been there the last 3 times I have gone. I love kids ,but this is supposed to be relaxing and stress free and it appeared his grandmother who helps was attempting to watch him and was unsuccessful in doing so. Slapping his hands yelling at him. Extremely un enjoyable experience . I was rushed and paid $50 to be traumatized and cut . My toe is bruised and GLUED together . I will NEVER go back to this place or refer anyone for that matter. Get your act together and pay attention to the client your are working on. Maybe then I would not of been cut and had such an awful experience . ZERO stars .. and get your ac working and clean up. It looks dirty and unprofessional inside there . read more

Stopped by this salon yesterday, never again will I go to Modern Nails. I used to go there and would get some of the younger ladies in the salon who were always nice and did a great job. Until I went in and started getting some of the older ladies in the salon. When I first walked in, it took several minutes before someone looked up to greet me - or ask what I was in for. I wanted polish, but they continuously argued with me about getting shellac, which I said several times I didn't want. When giving my nails a fill she then continued to argue with me about solar versus acrylic and how I "have to" get solar. I just had to stop responding to her because she wouldn't let the issue go. She never listened to me and kept arguing with me, which is no way to treat a PAYING customer. She then whispered under her breath about how she should have made me pay before painting my nails because polish takes so long for them to dry. She took minimal time and gave no attention to detail for my nails, it took her at most 10 min to fill them, she was just trying to funnel me in and out of the store as fast as she could. To top it off, she didn't let any of the customers know before hand that their card machine was "broken". Forcing everyone to pay in cash, which I luckily just happened to have some on hand. I agree with most reviewers here that if I could give this place zero stars, I absolutely would. read more

I just had one of the best facials I've ever had! I've had many facials in my 46 years of life in many parts of the US. For the most part, they've been ok but pretty much the same brief or slight message. I've finally found what I was looking for.
