Summary: good old fashioned diner, hard working employees, great food, nice place to eat if you're not entitled, sensitive or fussy :) Poor first Impression, one booth open, asked burley waitress if we could sit there and She looked at me like I was wearing an NRA cap at the Democratic National Convention but she okayed us to sit there. A different waitress came with the menu and took our drink orders; reasonably friendly. A group of farmer looking folks walked in (classic overalls, fishing caps etc) and looked at us like we just stole their spot or something- guy even pointed at us when talking to the person behind the counter then the waitress returns to take our orders and I asked her why they were looking at us that way and she said she really didn't know but they stopped after we ordered *shrug* My son said his burger was exceptionally delicious and my Philly Steak sandwich was very good, French fries were exceptional for a diner. Clean and reasonably comfortable; they only had a single bathroom so I guess you can call it gender neutral. Place is retro; modern by mid-twentyish century standards. Food was not good. Atmosphere was nice. Got a bacon burger and the meat was unseasoned and overcooked. Also came with no lettuce or tomato.

BEST burger I've EVER had! and that's every time I order one. they also make a scrumptious sausage gravy over biscuits I live only 2 blocks away but I honestly think it's even worth a bit of a drive. read more

This is a no frills, old time diner that only accepts cash. Staff was friendly and attentive. The place could use a few updates, but the food was good. It's a nice diner. Definitely reminds us of days gone past. The wait staff was very pleasant and had that down home friendly feel. The food wasn't anything to rave over but wasn't bad. It was what you expect from a diner. Like most diners you can get whatever is on the menu eat anytime of the day. My daughter doesn't like breakfast food for breakfast so it's nice to be able to get a burger first thing in the morning. read more

The Modern Diner has been a Wellsville main street main stay for decades. A classic diner with daily specials such as today's special "goulash with a roll". I had a hamburger with Pat's fresh cut fries and my husband had 2 eggs over medium with home fries, sausage patties & wheat toast. First, the hamburger & fries... the burger was hand smashed & cooked through and served on a toasted bun with fresh lettuce & sliced tomato. Yum! Now, the fries were just like fresh cut shoe string fries, a little on the brown side, but not burnt tasting and a little soft. My husband said the breakfast was delicious. His over medium eggs were done just right and he could tell that the eggs and sausage were local and fresh. The home fries were home made. He wished that he had read the menu closer and ordered toast made out of salt rising bread, instead of wheat, a local favorite! The service was super fast and friendly! We were in and out of there within 45 minutes even though all of the tables were filled! The meal was also a great value with soft drinks for under $20.00! We will definitely dine at the Modern Diner the next time we're in Wellsville! read more

Having never been to Wellsville, NY before and looking for a good place for breakfast, we checked the reviews on this site and decided to check out the Modern Diner. It was a good decision! Arriving just before 10 AM on a Saturday, we got one of the last two available booths. The waitress came over promptly and offered coffee and water. We accepted. Bad coffee at breakfast can ruin not just the meal, but the day. Fortunately, the coffee was hot, flavorful and frequently refilled. My three egg white veggie omelette was big and tasty. The wheat toast was buttered just right. My wife's pancakes were large and light. Our friend's French toast was thick, substantial and paired with a large amount of bacon (with a second piece provided). All of us have been to many diners and we rate this one as far above average. Based on our meals, we would be comfortable trying the Modern Diner for breakfast, lunch or dinner. read more

My aunt, who is now 91, worked here before leaving to join the WAVES in WW II. It's fun to take her back here to relive old memories and hear the stories of how little the Modern Diner has changed over the years. I've always been satisfied with the food here, and the service is always friendly and efficient. I'm a fan of the fish fry, and their pies are great and the servings are huge. I give this place a D. I got a mushroom and Swiss burger with the fresh cut fries and my husband got the bacon cheese burger and the fresh cut fries. Both of us got a side of onion rings. My burger was burnt and falling apart and the mushrooms were way under cooked. My husband's burger was burnt also and both of our fries were burnt and very greasy. My husband's chocolate milkshake didn't taste like chocolate at all. The wait stage was rushed and made us both feel like we were wasting her time. The whole place is cramped.
