Moving my son back to school and finally had a chance to try here. First inkling was that it must be good, because it was crowded. We were told to sit wherever we wanted. We chose the patio on a beautiful day. Unfortunately the only table out there was for 6, we were a party of 3 and nothing available inside and I asked one of the servers if that was okay. She said it wasn't a problem. Phew!!! We sat down, our order was taken in a timely manner. The menu is big. Lots to choose from. When our food came out, it was fresh and good. What we didn't finish, we packed up for our son to take back to his dorm. We will definitely go back when we visit again. Prices were definitely fair for what you get. Horrible experience, we walked in and yea it was busy but we sat at the bar for over 15 minutes and we didn't even got acknowledged. Nothing, no "hello, we'll be right with you", nothing! We got looked at like we were bothering them, like we were an inconvenience or something. But no one spoke to us. So after over 15 minutes we just left. Plus I was watching the guy cook, and he put no effort in making the food in a clean and neat way either. Just smoosh stuff together, no love for what he was doing. None of the people who used to work here were there. So maybe the place got taken over by new people or something...but it's gone drastically downhill. Ate here today while in the area for alfreds game. We ordered the mcjet and some scrambled eggs, bacon, rye toast, and corned beef hash. Everything came out quick, our waitress was nice and attentive. Everything was cooked perfect. The mcjet was hot, melty cheese, and fresh English muffin. The eggs were fluffy and good. Needed salt and pepper though. The bacon was yummy and salty. The corned beef hash was cooked great. The rye toast was buttered and warm. Prices aren't bad. Seating indoors and outdoors. I have visited Alfred a couple times. I drove around a few minutes each visit to take in the scenery. Nature abounds with rolling hills, streams and greenery. Visually appealing in every respect. But, I still have no clue what students do off campus. There is a small sub shop, maybe a pizza place (I can't confirm) and the Collegiate. That's it. The Collegiate is the areas "upscale" eatery. In the south, it's kinda what we call a "meat and three" with a few added offerings. The prices are moderate. Service was good on my visit. I like the Greek walls and the University memorabilia. The restaurant reflects the look of times gone by. You won't be blown away by the food or the service. It gets the job done. And the bottom line, it's the only game in town. read more

As a new comer to the area I was a little confused about Collegiate - but quickly learned most folks call it the Jet. My first experience was my husband bringing home a left over quesadilla. It was so good even when cold! Then I went on the first day of my new job with my coworkers and had a delicious taco salad. Most recently we went for breakfast and loved everything. My husband got eggs Benedict and the yolk was runny with great hollandaise sauce. Certainly checks all the boxes he looks for. I got the breakfast sandwich with bacon on a bagel and it was one of the best I've had. I will absolutely be back for that! We also (strangely but on my husbands request) got the cheese curds and they were so good - as was the marinara. Sit inside or on the patio - great service and great food! read more

It's a tiny town and a twenty minute drive to chain franchise restaurants so thank God for "The Jet", where it's a little like Cheers on Fish Fry Friday or Taco Tuesday. The Jet is homey and has all your comfort food favorites. They have vegetarian options as well , like the Portabella Mushroom Burger and giant salads full of raw veggies. We are fond of the pie. Also, they do take out. The patio is always perfect in the summer and they light up Main St all winter. We are big fans. read more

The Collegiate Diner saved my summer experience at Alfred University. Needless to say campus food is not much to be desired for. I stumbled on this diner earlier in the week and have been eating here ever since, lunch and dinner. The atmosphere is laid back, the food is fresh, home cooked, and delicious. What makes it even better, the prices are right! For a meal you will spend between $10-$13 per person with tax and tip (depending on add ons or what you may drink). The staff is friendly and welcoming. The owner is even floating around and greeting patrons. They have both indoor and outdoor seating! I highly suggest eating here especially when college cafeteria food it your only other option! read more

Had a great first visit here on a Saturday evening at dinner time. We were just passing through but I graduated from AU decades ago so I was familiar with the former Jet. We thought we'd try the updated site. Nice place inside with outdoor seating too. Lots of college kids in this back-to-school week. Everyone was well behaved. Good Evening Yelpers! College town 2.0 is this place. I ordered the ground round beef with gravy- stay FAR FAR FAR AWAY From it legit tastes like freezer burn. The meatloaf is on the same level. Do not ask for the side of vegetables because it's either from a bag or can and comes with water in it. If it wasn't for the fried pickles (the only edible item) I would've been starving. I went with a few friends for a nice lunch and I was honestly dissapointed by the service. Our server was very rude, and innatentive to any of our needs. I would say her name but she never told us. My girlfriend ordered a waffle with whip cream; she got no whip cream. The server didn't notice anything. Along with the whipped cream, my friend ordered tater tots which we also never got. The server never even mentioned the missing food until pointed out .She told us that they would give them something else because all the tator tots were out...THEY NEVER CAME!!!!!!! This whole ordeal of a lunch took several hours. in which we watched entire tables come, receive food and leave? Where was our server? This free time sadly allowed us the pleasure of seeing how filthy the cream cup for our coffee was (which had also been spilled by the server onto our table). The spill wasn't the only accident. When we finally were getting our food, some toast was dropped. The server went to get us replacement toast... Which was totally NOT toasted and very much soggy.To add insult to injury, we're pretty sure cross contamination with meat caused one of my friends to be sick. The Collegiate (a k a The Jet) is an Alfred institution. You can always find it packed with students and locals enjoying their generously portioned and very reasonably priced diner fare. The menu offers many classic diner items (burgers, lots of great breakfast options, salads, sandwiches, etc.) and there is a great variety to choose from. I highly recommend all of their breakfast items which are served all day. The atmosphere is very distinct and unique to Alfred. The walls are decorated with lots of Greek paddles (from fraternities and sororities, past and present, in Alfred) which lend a funky and very college town feel to the old-fashioned diner. There is a counter where one can sit and eat, and lots of booths to sit in as well. This place always provides a great off-campus dining option for students and also for locals and visiting families. The wait staff is friendly and attentive (usually made up of at least a few students from Alfred's colleges) and as I said, the prices are excellent. Really worth a visit. read more

There are only a couple places to eat in Alfred, the Jet is one. The people are nice, the place is easy to walk to and the food is not expensive (tho I have to laugh at how many times they charge an extra 25 or 30 cents for things like onions or mayo). Do not expect home cooking. Do not expect to really like the food. Breakfast is best. Sadly, this is an example of too little business in a town. Maybe if there was another place to go they would think less about serving the standard cisco fare and make more healthy interesting food. Wow what a horrible experience! Would even give it one star!!!!!! Waited 15 mins to get noticed at the table. 1 hour and 20 for some of our food. Have to serve my self my own syrup, sugar and ketchup. Got a cup with sticky hair on it. When ask to speak to the manager because my daughter still hadn't got my waffle they refused to come. People around were getting one plate here one plate there. Other tables came after us ate and left. Should've listened to the guy who told us it's really bad when we were walking in. I was in the area to pick up my friends son from Alfred state college and I stopped in here briefly to grab something quick since I didnt see any other fast food spots in the area. Its a popular diner in this quaint college town. Prices are affordable and the set up is your typical diner experience. I ordered a cheeseburger and fries which were just okay. Not all greasy spoons are created equal. Since The kid & my niece are both at AU & ASU, we're often here. The Jet is a MUST dine! We normally have breakfast, which is better than dinner BUT overall, a decent, clean & filling bite to eat. Bagels are fresh & chewy, eggs are always cooked to order, pancakes are light & fluffy & the kids seem to really enjoy the burgers. The Steak, Onion & Cheese sandwich the hubs had was delicious, although a bit greasy. The restrooms are kept very clean. It's the most well-rounded dining establishment in the area, a lil bit of something for everyone, so it STAYS busy. read more

I love salads, and the salads here are pretty awesome. I like the greek salad with chicken, the cajun chicken salad, and the turkey julienne. I used to get the hot roast beef every time I went in, but I've been eating lighter meals lately. I also love the fact they do breakfast all day long. The "Jet" is an institution at Alfred and is beloved by many. When it was damaged by fire a couple years back, they rebuilt a new structure down the street. Luckily they were able to save most of the Greek paddles that lined the walls of the old place. And the feel of the place is surprisingly similar (although a LOT roomier! lol). The standouts for me at the Jet are breakfast (esp the omelets & the cinnamon bread/toast - yum!) and the salads. I've always had great service and super clean tables, and I'm picky about that kind of stuff. A star off because a lot of the other food seems to fairly generic stuff. But whenever I'm in Alfred, it's a given at least one breakfast will be at the Jet! read more

Id give zero if it weren't for the coffee and convenience. Breakfast is marginal but pallitable. All the rest of the food is cafeteria food. Sub par cafeteria food. To make matters worse they nickle and dime patrons, for things that are standard faire at other restuarants. The prices are very inexpensive and the location is in the center of town which is the only reason why its getting two stars. I cannot name one thing off of the menu which i have ever been happy eating. With no competition in town I suppose they have no reason to be any better then they are now. I have often had not the friendliest service and have walked into the restaurant to see many tables with dirty plates! This is a nice little college spot, nothing to fancy but that is part of it's charm. The food is on point with other diners but this really is a locals only type place, since the town is so small the staff knows most of the diners on a first name basis, because of this if you are not a regular you can get lost in the shuffle.
