My thoughts: Very good meal/ pizza. Lg Tossed salad w/ mozz was good, but a little weak- iceberg lettuce, 3 cherry tomatoes, 3 black olives and a qtr onion diced. They have more veggies for the pizza toppings, use them. Pizza was very good. But the reason why I only like 1-2 topping is b/c when you have more the pizza gets a little soggy.. My family made the trek to New Haven specifically for pizza. We were in town for 2 days and visited 3 pizza places. We stayed right on Wooster street and visited Modern after walking around the Yale campus (which was a 5 minute drive). There was a parking lot adjacent to the building with several open spots along with street parking. Modern was the only restaurant that took our name onto a list. All others you wait in line. We waited less than 15 minutes for a table of 3 even though we were about 10 tables deep to start. The interior has the same classic feel of their competitors but is much larger than Sally's. They have two coal fired ovens running orders but I never got any information on their size. Service here was amazing with the hostess and server being extremely friendly and chatty. From what I've read they are the only family owned business remaining among their competitors. This was our last day in town. We were honestly over pizza by this point but couldn't pass up this historic stop. We ordered a medium italian bomb and pepperoni. Both were delicious and were similar to Frank Pepe's with that classic coal crunch (but not overly crispy). The meats, dough and sauce all had a great fresh flavor. With only two nights in New Haven, I had to plan my pizza eating strategically. I came to Modern at lunch with a couple of professors from the Yale School of Management and three of their TAs. It's been a few years since we've been to Modern Apizza,yesterday was amazing as always,we had four small pies,each one outstanding clam casino,anchovy garlic,meatball olive and American cheese! Hands down the best service plus I could see the crew making pies in the kitchen with all their expertise it's always entertaining to watch,no line at 12:30 but there was one when we left. I have had New Haven style pizza in South Florida, but this was my first time consuming it in New Haven. There are several famous (and not so famous) pizza joints in New Haven and Modern is usually one of the top. With so many pizza places I am not sure why there are usually still lines! We were able to park in the Modern lot right next door and were told it would be a half hour to 45 minute wait. We were seated in 20 minutes. I can see why the lines move quickly. We arrived to see a crowd of people waiting outside the door to sit and eat there. On the side of the building was the takeout area, also filled with people. We tried calling to place an order, and no one answered. So we arrived and placed a take out order. Even with the crowds, the take out pizza took arpund/less than 20 minutes to get. The system of finding out your pizza ready isn't the greatest. You just have to wait to hear them call your name. I think that is an area of the takeout process that could be improved upon. Despite the line of people waiting to get in, the pizza didn't live up to the hype. We put our name on the list, gave it 30 minutes, and when we didn't make much progress on the waiting list, then we ordered takeout. The takeout order took 20 minutes and we came prepared for this scenario to eat in our car. We ordered a clam pie and the Italian bomb pizza. The crust on both pizzas was disappointing. No crisp. No char or blisters. The clam pie at Modern was no where near as good as Pepe's clam pie. The toppings on the Italian bomb (Bacon, Sausage, Pepperoni, Mushroom, Onion, Pepper, Garlic) were good, but once again the crust was disappointing. The pizza was just average. I wouldn't even put Modern in the same class as Pepe's and Sally's. Modern must have made a special pizza for Dave Portnoy to get an 8.8 rating from him. For my tastes, Pepe's is the winner - it's no contest. And to get Pepe's, I would go to the Pepe's in Fairfield where there's less of a line and easier parking. read more

My brother and I split a large cheese pizza made half with mozzarella and American cheese. We were fans of the thin crust with the very familiar mozzarella cheese. The American cheese half taste good the first few bites but shortly after, it cooled down and became harder and harder to eat given the texture. If you're a huge fan of traditional American cheese then by all means it was fun to try! Overall, we had a good experience. It was pretty full on a Friday at noon. I have stated as much on some other reviews here for New Haven, but the pizza has been (for me) greatly exaggerated. I was told Modern was the new standard in the place and I decided to begin here. Wanted to get the clam pie and decided on the clams casino. Probably not the best choice as I tasted approximately zero clam, only peppers and bacon. It was basically a pepper and bacon pizza. The crust below the toppings, as well, was sort of gummy and not at all crisp. The crust at the end of the pie was blackened which I know is sort of the thing here but with the gummy dough it wasn't a great combo. All of this said, I found this pizza to be "ok." I wouldn't pay the premium to get it again, though I might try something very simple next time and see if perhaps I just caught them on a bad day. Or if their red sauce is the place to be. I dunno. It just wasn't worth the time, effort, and money. I say go to onesixthree and get a pie. It's better. read more

Now this was good pizza, at least just how I like! Crispy and not crazy doughy or greasy. For a plain slice, this is where it's at. This is more of a restaurant than a traditional pizzeria. It's nice and cozy, tables are clean and the wait staff was very nice. We also got soda by the bottle which is some off brand soda in great flavors and they were delicious too! Based on Yelp reviews we drove out here to try Hartfords famous pizza. We did enjoy the charred thin crust, but other than that it wasn't too impressive. You couldn't pick out the distinctive flavors of each pizza and they didn't taste like anything. I can get the same or better pizza here in Wilton - so it didn't have the "wow" factor I was anticipating. On top of that it was overpriced. Each personal pizza was around $25 so it ended up being $100+ for 4 of us. I could have spent under $40 at my local pizzeria for a fantastic pizza for 4. Boyfriend was keen to try this pizza place from all the rave reviews and Youtube videos made about it. And so we had a long weekend and decided to take a little trip to New Haven (we're from Brooklyn, NY) to try out this infamous pizza. We arrived in the area around 5pm on a Saturday and there was already a bit of a group forming outside of the restaurant. We headed inside and put our names down with a staff member who refused to give us, or anyone after us an actual time estimate of how long it would take to expect a table to open up. Just kept repeating "It won't be long." Like, that's subjective, so I didn't really like that he wouldn't tell anyone if it would be 10 or 30 minutes long because everyone asked how long did he think it would be. Also, they're old school and verbally call out your name and size party. No text or call that a table is ready for you. So just be warned, don't wander too far away if you choose to wait out on the sidewalk. There are no seats or benches outside either so you'll be standing around if there's a wait. Once your party is called, you get your booth and I must say it's kept pretty clean. I'm so used to expecting booths to be filthy, but the table was clean, not sticky, and the booth chairs were not old and falling apart. Our waitress was super nice, spoke clearly, and had great vibes and energy. I'm sorry to say I can't remember her name. Anyway she was great and got our orders in quickly. They give you physical menus, and their menu is simple and easy to navigate, albeit a bit dark with small font so break out those reading glasses. Onto the food, the pizza's were phenomenal. We can see why it's super popular and famous. If we lived any closer, we'd be regulars without a doubt. We also ordered a Caesar salad, which was very well tossed, and every piece of lettuce was coated with dressing so that was a nice starter to begin with. We ordered a half mozzarella and half onion large pie. Then we ordered another 2 small pies to take back to NY with us. They serve Pepsi as their Cola, so all Coca-Cola lovers beware. The drinks glasses are also small, my Ikea drink ware is bigger. They give you plenty of napkins which you're going to need, but water is not automatically offered to you. Not necessarily bad, just something to note. They do accept credit card for payment if you're like me and don't carry a single dollar bill. Overall, I highly recommend this place. I enjoyed my visit to New Haven and the star of the show-- the pizza, did not disappoint. I'll start off with the obvious hype surrounding New Haven pizza.... Well it certainly lives up to some sort of Hype as it was a good pizza and experience... But this is where you question the hype, does it heighten your experience or ruin it because your expectations are infinitely higher? For me, didn't ruin it however was a tad disappointed. Being from Ny my whole life, traveling all over to amazing pizza places around the country/world, it definitely sets the bar higher. Thankfully got lucky and didn't have to wait for a table, 10 minutes after we got there whole line to get in for a table, late afternoon on a Wednesday. The pies came out piping hot and fast... where do I start, flop? I was expecting it to have an amazing crisp thru and thru, well it didn't... both pies were a bit soft towards the center The meatball pie was way too salty, when you took a bite with meatball the salt overwhelmed the senses... first time I've ever had that on a pie or meatball pie, ever. The clam pie was excellent, definitely the best I've had overall however I haven't gotten a chance to try the others in New Haven yet!!! Overall great flavor from the crust, clam and lemon...
