Stopped in to check this place out while meeting up with a friend. Located in a small town. Parking can be found on nearby streets. Walking in you noticed there's giant chalk signs of the menu. They have a large number of various offerings. From drinks to food. Along with some merch from local artists. The place had a home like vibe to it. There are two levels of the coffee house. So another fiver for MM a refreshing surprise in downtown Waconia. I was expecting something cool as I recently saw a TV story on innovative small businesses and this place was highlighted. In a well preserved old green house there is counter seating with a window view and a few tables, but there is more seating up the wooden stair case. Check the huge wall menu which is all but a mural. A large pastry case and made to order items. It was warm, (both temperature and genial) and they own a drive through in Waconia and another shop in St. Bonifacius. I'm glad we checked this place out. We were staying at a Waconia hotel and wanted to find a "local" coffee shop for drinks and a light breakfast. The other online reviews and photos of Mocha Monkey helped us find this. First of all it's in the quaint downtown area of Waconia, with plenty of street parking. I guess quaint is also a good word to describe the building. The building style and decor give this place a real original feel. We sat upstairs and it was not only surprisingly well (naturally) lit with all the windows but the wall paint, furniture and decor/art were funky. Just a good overall vibe in this place. I can thoroughly and honestly say I have spent more hours in Mocha Monkey then in any other coffee shop through my recent high school years. Though the service quality may be changing, the coffee remains delicious, as well as the paninis and muffins! DEFINITELY make a stop in if you have time and have not yet (or do anyways!). The upstairs is an amazing place to catch up with friends or on work. As well as a place to admire and appreciate local artwork. Always a good choice to support local rather than the increasing chains coming to Waconia. I find their espresso tastes better than Starbucks anyways. My personal go-to is the Lucky Monkey. Really unique and quirky, fun spaces up and down, local art on display all over, great coffee and food and very nice staff. I had a latte earlier today, and came back for a glass of wine and a bowl of chicken wild rice with bacon soup. All were very good. Also, this place has a wonderful small town business ethic. They took my order and after had to tell me that part of what I ordered was actually not available. They replaced it with something almost twice as expensive and the difference was on the house. I've been here half a dozen times and I want to like it but just can't. The coffee shop is housed in a beautiful old building but when you sit for a few minutes and look around, it is in desperate need of work and cleaning. Floors are in major need of refinishing, walls are cracked, paint falling off trim - I realize this is part of it's charm...but it's rough. The service just confuses me. Every time I go in there are 3 - 4 employees who can't seem to keep the line moving, they just seem very scattered. Too many menu items! Have you ever looked at the one of (4,5,6?) different menu boards and tried to decipher what's what? Lastly, this seems to be the high school hangout spot. Not that it's a bad thing, just beware... Some suggestions: 1. Simplify the menu, or condense it, or....? 2. Clean up the building - it's a great space, bring that out 3. Why is there no dirty dish tub? 4. The entrance is very crowded - maybe remove a high-top table? read more

My partner and I ordered outside food to take to our jobs after having had coffee and catching up on work at this location. Unbeknownst to us over their food policy, the manager came upstairs along with the delivery service person and began to scold and lecture us over their outside food policy in front of several other costumers and totally disrupted both our work and everyone else around us. Don't really know if she was purposely trying to publicly shame us or if she is truly that bad and unprofessional at her job. The situation could have been handled alot more discreet and politely than to blatantly try and embarrass us. Horrible customer service and interpersonal skills. As a designer who telecommutes, I sometimes like to set up shop in a coffee house or something for a change of venue. As a designer with kids who are occasionally at home during the day, I sometimes NEED to get out of the house. Mocha Monkey is perfect for that. It's built into an old house right in downtown Waconia. One reviewer noted "the kids working the counter," which is true later in the day, but from morning until 3 or 4pm the counter is staffed by three or four wonderful ladies. They're friendly, funny, and really know their stuff when it comes to food and drink. I usually go for the "bottomless mug" option, as I'm typically there for several hours. They also have fancy drinks, beer and wine after 5, pastries and cookies, sandwiches (including really good baked pretzels with cream-cheesy filling inside...trust me, the taste better than I make them sound), and gelato. Yes, I said gelato. They've got several flavours, and they're all good. If you've never had gelato...well...you just haven't lived yet. There is seating on the main level, including some nice, comfy chairs by a fireplace. Upstairs has a couple of nice couches, plus tables and chairs spread through four rooms. There are plenty of books to read if you're just hanging out, and free Wi-Fi as well. The only downside is that there aren't really any quiet nooks or crannies where you can go if you need them. Sometimes I need to participate in conference calls, and it's always a crap-shoot as to whether you'll have the room to yourself or if you'll be forced to share it with a couple of moms with loud, whiny toddlers who stomp around and drop their toys (as was the case today). Stop by if you're in the area. Chances are you'll like it. read more

The baristas were pleasant and the ambiance of the shop was relaxed and like home. I "worked" from a nice leather couch for an afternoon this week, as I was meeting people at Lola's on the Lake (check out that review too) later on that night. My afternoon on the couch could not have gone better. I never once got kicked off of the Internet. The grilled cheese that I had was unlike anything I've ever had. It was on what appeared to be, a sandwich bun....but hey, that's ok, because it had grill marks and it was nice and cheesy! And hot! I am a self-professed coffee addict, and love nothing more than a good afternoon in a coffee shop just about anywhere... But I haven't found anything I like as much as Mocha Monkey. Should I ever open a coffee shop, it would be based on the likes of Mocha Monkey. The ambience is perfect-- chill and incredibly cozy with a distinctly artsy vibe. That said, their food offerings are delicious and their WiFi actually works. I stop in every chance I get, which literally means I'm here once or twice a day every time I'm in town. This cafe is a must do for any coffee shop fan (or non; they have wine!) that happens through Waconia. read more
