How bad is it that The Golden Donut is a regular stop on the final leg of a 4 mile walk? How bad could it be that the stop usually coincides with when the donuts are coming out fresh from the fryer? How much worse is it that its such a regular stop, we are recognized by one of the ladies who will tell us to wait as she runs to the back to get the super fresh warm ones for us? She even fresh glazed them for us once! That glaze was piping hot and fabulous! If this is really bad, I don't want it to be good. read more

I usually come here if I'm in a rush and need coffee and food fast. Their coffee is always fresh and good in the morning. I always get the egg and cheese bagel. Wish they had more bagel and breakfast options. The one thing I don't like is that they only take cash. I could see if they only take cash if it's under a certain amount ... but it's almost 2019 and a lot of people don't carry cash with them. I really like to support my neighborhood's small businesses and I definitely would come here more often if they took ATM/credit cards. read more

Golden Donut looks like a typical all star franchise except it isn't. pastries are not golden nor are they all star.. donuts: .95+ eats: danish type with vanilla creme filling(2) -taste bland with spots of bitterness -creme had bitter spots also -stale? 2 stars pour: french vanilla, peerless coffee, 1,80 -smooth mellow brew, no acidity 4 stars crumbs: -fast, smiling service. read more

Does it deserve the moniker of "golden" donut? I dunno about all that. Some of there were golden brown, if that's what they mean. Otherwise, let's just say that it's a terrific neighborhood bakery with donuts, coffee, and all the things you'd like to see at a donut shop from the sprinkles down to the cinnamon. This tidy spot is right on Geary, and as I spend a decent amount of time in this neighborhood these days, I've got to say that it's comforting knowing that it's there. That anytime I get a hankering for a donut I can make my way over to pick up a crueller, or an old fashioned (one of my faves) or perhaps a chocolate raised (middle of the road). I love knowing that I'm just a matter of blocks away from something so delicious, and warm, and wonderful, like a donut, and I can grab a few to share with family for breakfast in the morning. Though family did protest, they did gobble them up in the morning, and not slowly. read more

Standard doughnut place on Geary. I only grabbed a single glazed doughout which was good but nothing amazing. The lady behind the counter was super sweet and they did have seemingly a large selection. I'm a cat who has cravings, and donuts definitely fall into those cravings from time to time. When I do crave donuts, I always go to golden donut! Golden donut has really found the magic in terms of making donuts. They are always crisp and sweet in a way not many donut shops can do. Highly highly recommend their glazed old fashion donut! Filthy donut shop. There were a million and one flies and the shop appears to be under construction or repair. The limited donut selection was not enclosed in the display cabinet, which made them look extremely dry and unhealthy. read more

I usually get a chocolate glazed yeast raised donut, everywhere i go. It looks so simple, but it's not really easy to make. This one looked really big and fluffy, as did their other donuts. I was excited to take a bite. But when I did, I was disappointed. The taste wasn't there. The chocolate was a lighter color than usual and it didn't have that chocolate-glazed taste that i'm used to. I'm from Oakland and I'm used to the 24 hour donut shop that we hit at all hours of the night. So when I moved to San Francisco I was highly disappointed that I couldnt find any 24 hour donut shops near my area. Now Golden Donut isnt open 24 hours, but it has some damn good donuts. I stumbled into the shop during a ritalin induced study session needing to raise my taste buds from dead and I bought several donuts hoping they would be at least... not stale. To my surprise they were not only fresh but delicious. I like to wonder in mid day and buy several, and it's also cool that they leave the donuts that need filling unfilled until you tell them you want one. They will give you the custard or jelly option. I of course always take the jelly. My only suggestions to them would be to put more jelly in those donuts, you can never have too much raspberry jelly. read more

Bought a cheese danish and 5 donuts for a little over $8. I think they threw in another donut just to make it an even half dozen. I've only had some of the custard filled maple bar and that was okay. I mean It was good, but not the most delicious donut I've ever had. I really wish they had more of a selection, but if I'm craving a donut and I'm too lazy to go far, I stop by here again. read more

This is hands down the BEST DONUT SPOT IN SF (sorry, Bob's Donuts is officially overrated). The Golden Donut is a glaze- and sugar-donut lover's heaven! You should go when they are hot & fresh. I don't like my donuts too sweet, and this place nails it with the perfect amount of sugar. The dough is so light, fluffy, and eggy...it seriously just melts in your mouth (especially with the hot glaze)! And I must comment on the donuts even when they are not fresh -- they're still amazing! They don't get hard and soggy like most day-old donuts from other shops. I don't know how these things are made -- but it is life changing. I swear, little Asian hole-in-the-wall spots are always the best. :P The two ladies who run the shop are also super sweet and quick to get orders! They must know that I'm that girl who always comes in asking for the hot donuts...Lol. I hope I never move out of SF for fear of missing this place! read more

Great doughnuts that I've always loved, prices going up but I'm still a customer when I need a donut fix.. but don't come here looking for a croissant.. Purchased one only to find out their "chocolate croissant" is nothing but a piece of bread with a strip of brushed chocolate on the inside and drizzle of the outside not to mention the price they charge for isn't even worth it. read more

A neighborhood classic. I've been stopping by here, once in a while, since high school. (GWHS c/o '04!!!) I generally go for a dozen donut holes and one or two donuts. Very friendly, non-pretentious shop usually with only local visitors. read more

10/31/2007 UPDATE: This is upgraded to 3.5 stars actually. If you buy 6 round donuts (plain, no filling, no bars), you can get it for the special price of $3+. That's a pretty good deal. Donuts are pretty fresh. ******************* Hmm... when I went here, the woman behind the counter was Vietnamese. Anyhoo, I picked up some chocolate bars for my nephew and niece. The chocolate on the donut is runny ala Safeway's. Donuts were meh. They were sorta like Safeway donuts but at higher prices. read more

MMMmmmm donuts! The hunny and I like to grab a few fritters, glazed, holes, and old fasioned cake donuts before we head off on our roadtrips. Their coffee isn't the best, but they do one thing and they do it well. I think this place is great and almost as sweet as my man is. Yummo! read more

This is a GREAT donut shop. Looks like a little hole in the wall....but boy do they put out some delicious donuts! I have never seen such FLUFFY donuts in my life. And that's not air....but dough. Stopped in on a Sunday morning to grab some donuts for my co-workers. The donuts were okay, nothing to write home about. The donut holes (which I LIVE for), were just okay...not melt-in-your-mouth that I am accustomed to. Anyway, wasn't busy, so it was easy to get in and out. My co-workers appreciated the donuts. My favorite doughnut spot across from my favorite bar. It's every drunkies favorite combo! Open until the wee hours of the morning. The lady working here is always so sweet and always gives extra doughnut holes on top of the doughnut order. Doughnuts are fluffy and just disintegrate on your mouth. Their apple fritter though..... Oh lord. It literally melts in your mouth. 2.25 for one and it always gets me full. read more

This place is good, and the employees are super nice. Unlike most people, the only time I have been here is after dinner, for dessert. They have a pretty good selection still, and the prices are good. They don't always taste the freshest, but I wouldn't expect anything more so late at night! The sugar one and crumb one are my fav! I used to come here all the time when I was younger w my grandpa. As I left dinner on a Saturday night and saw this establishment still standing after so many years I convinced my husband to make a pit stop for some donuts on the way home. I got my childhood fav white donut w sprinkles and hubby got an apple fritter. Both were surprisingly good given we were there at around 10:30p. Sprinkled donut was soft and not too sweet, apple fritter was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. 4 stars for the donuts and an extra star for the sentimental value this place has for me. Came here Christmas night looking to get a quick sweet tooth fix. The donuts were tasty but the service was even better. Sadly we were distracted by an incident with a disgruntled SFPD officer and did not notice the employee had given us about a dozen complementary donut holes. I felt like such a jerk when we got home and saw them because I absolutely would've tipped her had I known!! Thank you to the sweet employee, we will be back for sure. read more

The egg and cheese breakfast bagel, specifically on everything bagel toasted is undefeated. It is so delicious so filling. There is no seating from what I remember so if you grab it you can always bring it to Golden Gate Park and enjoy it there. The bagels are quite dense. They have a great egg to cheese ratio. And the service is very quick!

Now it's back to farmers markets and then, if all else fails, their bakery headquarters on Illinois Street in the Dogpatch neighborhood. Beware It's not a traditional store front or entrance. A little like connecting with a secret underground club or speakeasy! Lol!!! At the brick and mortar shop and the farmers market the staff is always nice and helpful with picking out bagels if undecided. If going to the Dogpatch location at least by now you'll know what you want. Place your order and pick it up. All their bagels are good fresh or toasted - plain, sesame, onion, poppy seed, Everything, etc. - plus their shmears and chocolate chip cookies!!!! I'll always do a dozen plus a scallion or plain shmear. Still wish for a brick and mortar location but in the meanwhile. I'll happily find them wherever they are!

Update to a Formerly Glowing Review…read more This is an update to what was once a glowing review of my beloved Pizzahacker. I've been going for many, many years (close to 10--or more?), so it pains me to say that some changes under new management have shifted the experience for me. Jeff Krupman, the founder and chef (who ended up being a friend!) sold the business to one of his longtime employees a year ago or more ago. (He still owns the Mill Valley location). While they tried to keep a lot of things the same h feel noticeably different. It's interesting that it still shows his name as manager. Here's what I've noticed--not in a good way: The menu now feels overwhelmingly meat-forward, with a dearth of thoughtfully designed vegetarian pizzas. I have mentioned this to Jesse (longtime staff) and a female server, asking them to pass this along. Each pizza also seems to have several more ounces of (still very delicious sourdough) dough. The crust is significantly thicker, and there's simply more of it. What once felt light and beautifully balanced now feels heavier. Vegetarian options are largely reduced to subtraction of meat . I've spoken with longtime waitstaff (including Jesse) and asked that this feedback be shared with Juan, the new owner. One server suggested I could just order a pizza without the meat. But a thoughtfully composed vegetarian pizza is very different from a meat pizza with ingredients removed--and at $24, paying full price for a pizza minus its main topping feels unfair. Perhaps there could be a cheaper option availabile for meaty pizzas without the meat. Please consider making The Summer Fave year round, bringing back the Inside Out, and/or creating more pizzas that don't center around multiple meats. Also, I know that the new management has changed some of the ingredients that made their pizzas so special and delicious. In particular, the sausage on the Yo Vinny, which used to be house made is now closer to the generic sausage you'd find at Pizza Hut. Loses so much of the experience to change to these cheaper ingredients. (I lean vegetarian as much as possible but make occasional exceptions, so I know this!) I used to go to Pizzahacker weekly and look forward to it with genuine excitement. Now, while I still enjoy the occasional pizza, that sense of anticipation is gone. I do want to say I'm grateful that my beloved Intermezzo salad remains unchanged--and I still care deeply about this place. I love PH--please consider the earnest pleas of a longtime customer who has eaten there many dozens of times.

Small business owned by the baker himself, many different flavored bagels and spreads to choose from. They also offer bagel dogs which I have yet to try. If you're lucky enough to snag a pesto bagel before he sells out, it will change your life. My go to: pesto bagel with sun-dried tomato spread and sprouts. I have tried many bagel locations, even prefer this spot over boichik in the city. The owner is so kind and well worth supporting! Parking can be difficult around this area, but it's worth the 5 - 10 minute walk.
