Maple latte & strawberry rose matcha latte
    Nidhi G.

I love the blueberry lime cake doughnut & strawberry glaze! They have fun latte flavors that use in house donut glazes. They recently added a strawberry rose matcha latte - I love the rose flavor but the matcha to milk ratio is a bit milk heavy. I love stopping here for a sweet treat after my morning walks on the weekend!

Has a fun retro interior. Donuts are a bit pricy on first looks, but they're huge! The croissant / donut hybrids are definitely oily, but we liked them best. The oiliness made them moist! The old fashioned donuts were very good too, like a moist cake. Would stop by again to get my donut fix!

The worst donut I've ever had. It's like chewing on a week old baguette with no flavor maple bar.

They are getting four stars because one of the donuts I had is a 12 out of 10. just wow it is amazing. It is some type of chocolate old-fashioned with sea salt on top and it is crack like I could eat one of these every day and weigh 500 pounds. However, I also bought a maple bar and that gets a -0 out of 10 light and fluffy my aunt Fanny. This thing could be used as a weapon. There is nothing fluffy about this dense brick of flavorless donuts. it's difficult to imagine how they can hit it out of the park with their old fashion and produce such a horrible product So I can recommend the cake donuts, but stay away from the raised. If there anything like my maple bar, you might break a tooth.

I had bookmarked Johnny Doughnuts after a friend said she had a delicious light and fluffy raised donut here. Unfortunately, my experience did not match expectations. THE FOOD // - LIME POPPYSEED RAISED DOUGHNUT (1/5): the signs on the wall mention that their raised doughnuts' dough "includes fresh potato to give the final product an extra bite". While I do like raised donuts with a bit of chew to them (not like Krispy Kreme), I found this donut to be much too dense for my liking - definitely not light or fluffy. The lime poppyseed glaze sounded good on paper, but it turned out to be rather one-dimensional - like a generic sweet and sour, a bit too sweet, and didn't have much lime aroma. Adding some lime peel could've helped elevate this. - BROWN BUTTER PUMPKIN CAKE DOUGHNUT (3/5): this was the best donut out of the ones we tried. The outer edges had some decent crispy bits. The donut was rather misshapen, which two sides being a lot thicker; I liked the thinner sides as they had a better ratio of crispy exterior bits to the super-moist, slightly sticky interior. Flavor was decent. Also very sweet; I recommend having this with some coffee or tea. - CHOCOLATE CHIP CRODOUGH (2/5): croissant x donut hybrid. Each bite oozed with an abundance of cold oil, which was off-putting. The chocolate glaze on top tasted pretty standard, not noteworthy. I haven't had many crodoughs/cronuts before, so maybe this combo is just not for me. PRICING // The three doughnuts came out to be over $15, not including tip, which felt especially disappointing given that we didn't particularly enjoy them. I've had much better donuts elsewhere for the same or less cost. SERVICE & AMBIANCE // Service was good. The shop looks pretty clean. There were four seats inside along the window counter, and two small tables outside. Note, if you sit inside, your clothes may absorb the smell of donut oil.

I got the brown butter latte and a chocolate sea salt old fashioned donut. The latte was 3.5/5 i just wished it was a little stronger. The donut was good 4 /5 but not life changing. the staff was really nice.

Blueberry lime cake old fashioned donut- (3/5) The flavor combo was enticing, but the donut was very dense and tasted more like an actual cake instead of being crunchy on the outside. Chocolate Cronut- (3/5) Loved the texture of this donut. So many fluffy layers! It was extremely sweet. Each bite had a ton of powdered sugar. I couldn't finish more than a couple of bites. The interior was very aesthetic and instagrammable, and the staff was friendly and welcoming.

Cute interior style of the shop, counter space and small seating outside. There is selection of coffee/tea available! There's a nice variety of donuts - i got the chocolate salted caramel old fashioned. It was a hefty large donut but fluffy and moist! It had a slight remnant oil aftertaste

Omgosh the box of pastries we got fr here was so good. Staff helped us to choose. Will def be back. Everything was a hit, no misses. Prices are fair.

Crodough was pretty good. Sugar on the outside and cream filling. Tiny bit dry and a little stiffer than I would like, but I imagine you need the stiffness to get the boxy aesthetic. Enjoyable, but wouldn't go out of your way for it

Johnny Doughnuts caught my attention while eating across the street at Bubu. The storefront looks very polished and serves a wide variety of donuts, from the classic raised and apple fritters to more unique assortments like sweet potato and lemon donuts. While the donuts looked really good, I'm a bit torn about this place. I tried the lemon poppyseed donut. The dough was too dense for my liking and strayed away from the soft, fluffy dough that I was used to. Texture-wise, it's not my favorite. However, I really liked the lemon poppy seed glaze. It's sweet, tangy, and not too thick. For $4.75, this donut wasn't worth it to me, but I do want to give it another shot. It's great that they're serving food made from quality, local ingredients!

When I've eaten the whole damn thing before taking a photo, you know it's good! I got the blueberry fritter. You know most fritters are super sweet with that sugar crust? This one is not crazy sweet, which I like! It has a dense bouncy texture, perfect sweetness. #Salivatesf approved!

Love the Johnny Donuts location on California. I was disappointed when the Hayes Valleys spot closed a few years back, but this location is perhaps even easier for me when I'm in the area to visit Jtown. I also like the vibe of it--it has more of a scandinavian feel to it. And importantly, they have vegan donuts! Of course, I always wish there were more (and I don't always get there early enough to get the best selection) but I think there's upwards of 3 or so varieties. They're all very good, with a sweet potato base. I will also note that all the staff I've interacted with here are very friendly and have gone out of their way to provide helpful tips. Definitely recommend if you're shopping on Fillmore--delicious donuts are just steps away!

I could see the balloon that held all of the anticipated excitement my husband had of showing me a "new" spot (it was new to me) all but heartbreakingly deflate. Sigh. Not wanting that crestfallen look to prevail, I told him we'd try again. A hole in the wall that is takeout only, the customarily drab sunset weather doesn't do the vibe any favors out here. When it's overcast & cold outside, does anyone want cold pineapple buns to go with it? That was my first experience, so I was curious about how the do over was going to go. Night & day... Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! I suggest you go for the gold, kerrygold Irish butter. Matcha. I love matcha so it's an automatic order but it's a definite winner. Not too sweet, because matcha isn't naturally sweet. Custard. Hubby's favorite. He's a vanilla head, so... Salted egg yolk. Hubby's other favorite. I like, he loves. Ube. WOW. Better than the matcha which is weird coming from me. The Ube filling BAKES INTO the interior & it is amazing! I wished I'd gotten 6 of these. The puffs. How friggin adorable. Just throw in 6 puffs. Or 18. Then dip them in the side of custard that comes with. If you get extra to take home (& you should), all you have to do is be sure to reheat them as per the directions on the box. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with foil, or an oven rack (I've done both, both work), at 325 for around 10 minutes. I think 12-15 minutes is actually ideal. I couldn't believe how soft they were after this. Like new! The next day, after being refrigerated all night! I know weird, but fact! A couple of days later I requested that we go again next Saturday. Like when you were a kid & you couldn't wait for Friday because Friday's were pizza night. That crestfallen look my husband had was replaced with delighted satisfaction. Glee even. We went again the following Saturday. 5 stars

They're tiny details like the cute, hand drawn 'Dog Parking' sign, the banners and drawings from other kids, and all of the carefully arranged baked goods. When my wife and I started planning our leisurely drive to San Francisco, we intended to visit two…read morebakeries, Tartine and Arizmendi, with the goal of purchasing scones and other pastries/desserts. Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.
