THE FOOD // - LIME POPPYSEED RAISED DOUGHNUT (1/5): the signs on the wall mention that their raised doughnuts' dough "includes fresh potato to give the final product an extra bite". While I do like raised donuts with a bit of chew to them (not like Krispy Kreme), I found this donut to be much too dense for my liking - definitely not light or fluffy. The lime poppyseed glaze sounded good on paper, but it turned out to be rather one-dimensional - like a generic sweet and sour, a bit too sweet, and didn't have much lime aroma. Adding some lime peel could've helped elevate this. - BROWN BUTTER PUMPKIN CAKE DOUGHNUT (3/5): this was the best donut out of the ones we tried. The outer edges had some decent crispy bits. It is some type of chocolate old-fashioned with sea salt on top and it is crack like I could eat one of these every day and weigh 500 pounds. 3.5, rounding down to 3 but I'm torn. Some of the donuts we got were sooo good (crodough, birthday cake), but others were downright inedible (maple old fashioned, cinnamon sugar twist). If I'd just gotten those two great donuts, I'd probably have given 4 or 5 stars. The Crodough was a really standout version of a cronut- I didn't know it had pastry cream in it, and I don't normally love filled donuts, but it was so delicious. Moist but crispy exterior, perfect texture and great balance of flavors and sweetness. I know the cronut trend is a little old but this one is a must try. The birthday cake flavor (not sure if it was an old fashioned because it wasn't labeled as such, definitely some kind of cake donut) was also good- crispy exterior, very moist with yummy sprinkles and vanilla glaze. Idk if it really screams "birthday cake" flavor but still a really tasty sprinkle donut. However- the donuts all looked so good, so of course we had to get more than just those two. That's where the bad begins. The dark color of the cinnamon twist should've been a warning for me not to get it, but I did anyways. Very dry and bready, perhaps overdone as well. I didn't try the maple old fashioned but my partner said it was super dry and crumbly. We got two classic raised- one glazed, and one chocolate striped (aka Vanilla Roaming Zebra). The glazed was fine but tasted kind of squishy/too moist, like it wasn't super fresh. Maybe my fault for getting it at 5pm when it was probably made that morning. Normally I love a classic plain glazed though so I was disappointed it didn't hit the spot. Was very disappointed by the Zebra- the chocolate tasted off, and maybe had coffee in it? I know that's some folks cup of tea, but not mine, and wish it had been labeled as such. The person working the counter didn't ask if we had any questions and the signage on individual flavors could've used better descriptions. Minimal seating inside but nice light. Anyways- bit of a letdown overall for the price ($31 for 6 doughnuts). I never knew about this place until recently when I was walking past on the way to my destination. I came in on my way back and could barely lift my walker into the shop. The person who helped me was very friendly and patient. He explained what the day's choices were and what his favorites were. I bought two donuts and was shocked at how expensive they were! I would recommend eating it all on the same day because they lose their integrity the next day. I also tried the crodough the next day and wished I had tried it the first day. I walked the block or two up to Salt and Straw and ordered a scoop of vanilla there. I split the cronut with my boyfriend (the staff at Johnny provided a knife to cut!) and enjoyed it with the ice cream. The cronut has a nice texture and came with a cream inside. It's veryyy dusted with sugar, so expect a bit of a mess while eating. The ice cream paired well and I can't imagine myself eating the cronut by itself. It's a big cronut, and super sweet--prepare to save some for later if you don't have anyone to split it with. The shop also has coffee which may also pair nicely with a donut here.
