Delicious donuts, especially the Wheat Free Frittah Thang. Thank you, Johnny Doughnuts, for thinking about the gluten-free crowd. (Would you consider including more fruit in them? Sometimes I notice only a few berries.) The Pac Heights location needs more ventilation. I sat down to enjoy my donut and a coffee, and the grease particles in the air clung to me like the calories clung to my waistline. I worry about the health of the workers. read more

Love their name! (Like the scene out of "The Godfather: "Leave the gun, take the cannoli") Nothing like that, Johnny Doughnuts are wholesome and classic, nothing intimidating unless you indulge daily then dread stepping on the scale! These are classic, pillowy doughnuts with a nice, soft bite and sprinkles that stick to your lips and rain down on your shirt. The kind of doughnuts that bring a childlike smile to your face. We picked up a "Too Good to Go" bag with four big doughnuts. My son made a beeline for the brown sugar cinnamon twist and I had the cream filled chocolate covered doughnut with sprinkles. Johnny Doughnuts has a growing number of brick & mortar stores in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Marin, East Bay and north into Napa and Santa Rosa plus a food truck that caters to businesses and parties. Nothing crazy like bacon or candy corn decorating them: These are classic cake, glazed, jelly, apple fritter and maybe flavoring one step beyond (lime mascarpone cream filled!) Johnny Doughnuts is a new favorite business. We'll return to hand pick our favorites! read more

This great place is great cool fine they have Kroeun nuts which are mixed of croissants and donuts. The young ladies at work here are very nice and helpful. We have lots of vegan options as well. For such a small shop, they have a wide variety and I definitely would come back. Also great variety of teas and coffees and matcha read more

Old fashioneds are my go to if having a donut. Decided to go with the Chocolate Salted Caramel ($4.50) when told these were a popular one. Flavors of the cinnamon and nutmeg came through. The glaze wasn't overly sweet. The cake was moist, although I would've liked the outside crispier. Glad to have given them a try. read more

Good doughnuts! Absolutely loved their raspberry jam bismark filled doughnut. The raspberry was real fruit and there was a lot of filling. Great flavor that was a a little tart, which paired nicely with the sugar glaze on the outside. The doughnut was fluffy and soft, no complaints. So good! Wow. And huge. The coffee cake doughnut was crumbly and soft, with nice notes of cinnamon. Their coffee was okay. The store seemed understaffed, one person had to do everything. They were friendly and doing it all/doing their best. read more

Craving for a doughnut around the neighborhood and decided to pop in. I was honestly surprised by the texture! I was expecting a light, airy doughnut, but Johnny Doughnuts has a much more dense and chewy texture. It's definitely more substantial than your typical fluffy doughnut, which makes it stand out from other spots. They also have some fun and creative flavors that are worth trying. If you prefer a doughnut with more of a hearty bite rather than light and airy, this is a place to check out! read more

I've been a fan of Johnny Doughnuts since their original outpost in San Rafael. Today I popped in after a PT appointment at nearby CPMC Pacific campus. Donuts - * the blueberry lemon - excellent * the coffee cake - excellent * the cinnamon sugar twist - not good. Very dry and small in size. Definitely needs a good dunk. It was a take away order. Got home and plated all three. The donuts are made with potato flour. They're dense like old fashioned donuts. Make sure you've got a strong cup of coffee to go with them. read more

I'm a big fan of this donut spot. I've been going in since it was in Hayes Valley. I like the clean aesthetic and you can always see behind the scene. The hard part is always just ordering 1 donut. The staff is always professional and prompt. I will continue traveling to Pac Heights for these lovely donuts. read more

Has a fun retro interior. Donuts are a bit pricy on first looks, but they're huge! The croissant / donut hybrids are definitely oily, but we liked them best. The oiliness made them moist! The old fashioned donuts were very good too, like a moist cake. Would stop by again to get my donut fix! read more

I had bookmarked Johnny Doughnuts after a friend said she had a delicious light and fluffy raised donut here. Unfortunately, my experience did not match expectations. THE FOOD // - LIME POPPYSEED RAISED DOUGHNUT (1/5): the signs on the wall mention that their raised doughnuts' dough "includes fresh potato to give the final product an extra bite". While I do like raised donuts with a bit of chew to them (not like Krispy Kreme), I found this donut to be much too dense for my liking - definitely not light or fluffy. The lime poppyseed glaze sounded good on paper, but it turned out to be rather one-dimensional - like a generic sweet and sour, a bit too sweet, and didn't have much lime aroma. Adding some lime peel could've helped elevate this. - BROWN BUTTER PUMPKIN CAKE DOUGHNUT (3/5): this was the best donut out of the ones we tried. The outer edges had some decent crispy bits. The donut was rather misshapen, which two sides being a lot thicker; I liked the thinner sides as they had a better ratio of crispy exterior bits to the super-moist, slightly sticky interior. Flavor was decent. Also very sweet; I recommend having this with some coffee or tea. - CHOCOLATE CHIP CRODOUGH (2/5): croissant x donut hybrid. Each bite oozed with an abundance of cold oil, which was off-putting. The chocolate glaze on top tasted pretty standard, not noteworthy. I haven't had many crodoughs/cronuts before, so maybe this combo is just not for me. PRICING // The three doughnuts came out to be over $15, not including tip, which felt especially disappointing given that we didn't particularly enjoy them. I've had much better donuts elsewhere for the same or less cost. SERVICE & AMBIANCE // Service was good. The shop looks pretty clean. There were four seats inside along the window counter, and two small tables outside. Note, if you sit inside, your clothes may absorb the smell of donut oil. read more

They are getting four stars because one of the donuts I had is a 12 out of 10. just wow it is amazing. It is some type of chocolate old-fashioned with sea salt on top and it is crack like I could eat one of these every day and weigh 500 pounds. However, I also bought a maple bar and that gets a -0 out of 10 light and fluffy my aunt Fanny. This thing could be used as a weapon. There is nothing fluffy about this dense brick of flavorless donuts. it's difficult to imagine how they can hit it out of the park with their old fashion and produce such a horrible product So I can recommend the cake donuts, but stay away from the raised. If there anything like my maple bar, you might break a tooth. read more

I was in the area so stopped by and got three doughnuts. First off they are expensive as hell but they are big and I wanted them for after dinner. First I had a doughnut with cream filling(in pic). It wasn't a good doughnut. Stale and almost too chewy! Now the cream filling. It wasn't cream because it crystallized. Very bland flavor with just a hint of vanilla. I had the other two doughnuts later. Same problem. Bland and tough. I won't be back! read more

I am on a diet but this is the one place that throws me off it. I walked by after getting a haircut. The allure and scent made...buy a Bismark! 500 calories. Meh. I skip dinner. If you were suckered in by promises of vegan donuts, forget about it. This was one of the restaurants we were most excited about in our trip to San Francisco, and we tried two mornings in a row, both times to be told they hadn't made any yet and didn't know when they'd get around to making some. The second time, the person was totally dismissive about it. We are so disappointed. read more

Blueberry lime cake old fashioned donut- (3/5) The flavor combo was enticing, but the donut was very dense and tasted more like an actual cake instead of being crunchy on the outside. Chocolate Cronut- (3/5) Loved the texture of this donut. So many fluffy layers! It was extremely sweet. Each bite had a ton of powdered sugar. I couldn't finish more than a couple of bites. The interior was very aesthetic and instagrammable, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. read more

I love the blueberry lime cake doughnut & strawberry glaze! They have fun latte flavors that use in house donut glazes. Super cute interior and nice looking doughnuts, but lacking in good texture and flavor. We got a pretty big selection- 6 flavors including plain glaze, chocolate drizzle glaze (Vanilla Roaming Zebra), birthday cake sprinkle, maple old fashioned, filled crodough, and cinnamon twist bar. The service was not particularly friendly and they didnt really ask if we had questions or anything. The crodough was pretty tasty with a unique layered texture and yummy filling. Both of us enjoyed it. 5/5 The cinnamon twist bar and the maple old fashioned were both extremely dry/chalky. One bite was too muc for both. The twist bar was highly bready, more like a morning bun - should not be advertised as a donut. The old fashioned was gluten free so maybe that was the issue. 2/5 for both The birthday cake had a good flavor and better texture than the others. 4/5 The glaze classics were fine but any old hole in the wall donut shop with make a better one for cheaper. 3/5 Altogether inconsistent and not worth the price :( read more

Johnny Doughnuts caught my attention while eating across the street at Bubu. The storefront looks very polished and serves a wide variety of donuts, from the classic raised and apple fritters to more unique assortments like sweet potato and lemon donuts. While the donuts looked really good, I'm a bit torn about this place. I tried the lemon poppyseed donut. The dough was too dense for my liking and strayed away from the soft, fluffy dough that I was used to. Texture-wise, it's not my favorite. However, I really liked the lemon poppy seed glaze. It's sweet, tangy, and not too thick. For $4.75, this donut wasn't worth it to me, but I do want to give it another shot. It's great that they're serving food made from quality, local ingredients! read more

3 1/2 stars but I will round up to 4 based on service. Went to this place while trying to burn time before lunch. Super cute vibe the staff was very friendly. I recommend the caramel donut with chocolate and flaky salt. Think of it as a cake...a really great mini cake. Love the Johnny Donuts location on California. I was disappointed when the Hayes Valleys spot closed a few years back, but this location is perhaps even easier for me when I'm in the area to visit Jtown. I also like the vibe of it--it has more of a scandinavian feel to it. And importantly, they have vegan donuts! Of course, I always wish there were more (and I don't always get there early enough to get the best selection) but I think there's upwards of 3 or so varieties. They're all very good, with a sweet potato base. I will also note that all the staff I've interacted with here are very friendly and have gone out of their way to provide helpful tips. Definitely recommend if you're shopping on Fillmore--delicious donuts are just steps away! read more

I like a simple raised with chocolate icing and it was solid, not the best of all time but not a disappointment either, will eat again. The cronut was really good, I was surprised at how much I liked it actually. walked past this place after an appointment and it smelled good so i stopped inside haha. the lady working at the front was really nice and told me about some of the donuts. the lady recommended the cronut that has a vanilla cream in it. she said its their most popular and what they're always selling out of. i get it now-- it was SO GOOD (and that's coming from someone who really has to be in a mood for a donut). the cinnamon sugar on the outside with the flakiness like a croissant would be was the perfect textural feel. i would check this place out if you're in the mood for a sweet treat! the overall vibe and ambiance is weirdly nostalgic and i love it. kind of giving east coast, costal vibes read more

Why is there 1 person working on a Saturday? ‍ The doughnuts are good but cold, so cold they are hard

3.5, rounding down to 3 but I'm torn. Some of the donuts we got were sooo good (crodough, birthday cake), but others were downright inedible (maple old fashioned, cinnamon sugar twist). If I'd just gotten those two great donuts, I'd probably have given 4 or 5 stars. The Crodough was a really standout version of a cronut- I didn't know it had pastry cream in it, and I don't normally love filled donuts, but it was so delicious. Moist but crispy exterior, perfect texture and great balance of flavors and sweetness. I know the cronut trend is a little old but this one is a must try. The birthday cake flavor (not sure if it was an old fashioned because it wasn't labeled as such, definitely some kind of cake donut) was also good- crispy exterior, very moist with yummy sprinkles and vanilla glaze. Idk if it really screams "birthday cake" flavor but still a really tasty sprinkle donut. However- the donuts all looked so good, so of course we had to get more than just those two. That's where the bad begins. The dark color of the cinnamon twist should've been a warning for me not to get it, but I did anyways. Very dry and bready, perhaps overdone as well. I didn't try the maple old fashioned but my partner said it was super dry and crumbly. We got two classic raised- one glazed, and one chocolate striped (aka Vanilla Roaming Zebra). The glazed was fine but tasted kind of squishy/too moist, like it wasn't super fresh. Maybe my fault for getting it at 5pm when it was probably made that morning. Normally I love a classic plain glazed though so I was disappointed it didn't hit the spot. Was very disappointed by the Zebra- the chocolate tasted off, and maybe had coffee in it? I know that's some folks cup of tea, but not mine, and wish it had been labeled as such. The person working the counter didn't ask if we had any questions and the signage on individual flavors could've used better descriptions. Minimal seating inside but nice light. Anyways- bit of a letdown overall for the price ($31 for 6 doughnuts). If everything had been consistently good this would be 5 stars and I'm honestly confused why they have such a huge selection if they aren't gonna nail every single thing they put out. read more
