One can order a salad with all of the toppings you could dream of, while the toppings were great the salad lacked substance. I thought about the little lady in the Wendy's commercial, "Where's the Beef?" Where was the substance? It was an all lettuce salad, I was cheated on the chicken, the other veggies and it was not just my salad. Even the prepared salads are mostly lettuce. I WAS CHEATED! I'm on the fence about Mixt Greens. On one hand, the salads are really yummy, and they have combinations that you can't find other places. I love the Maui with ahi tuna, mango and macadamia nuts. But... every salad I get has huge chunks of lettuce that are too tough to eat. Its like they throw the entire head of lettuce through a mild chop chop, and that's it. I end up throwing away about 1/4 of the lettuce. Its also pretty pricey, $12 for a salad is a little ridiculous. But, the people are extremely nice, the ingredients seem fresh, and they have great sparkling lemonade. When I say "light on the dressing, please," they go light on the dressing. When I want "just a tad bit more cucumbers, thank you," they give me just a tad bit more. The folks here really listen to me, and that's a plus. Especially when the line can get pretty long and busy during the work week. The dressings are sooooooo tasty and everything is unbelievably fresh. I crave them on a daily basis. There's always a line a mile long every day, so I know I'm not the only one obsessed with this place. One of my favorite staple places to go when I worked up near the Transamerica Building and Chinatown was Mixt Greens. Mixt Greens is a California style restaurant with a heavy emphasis on organic, local food and healthy preparation. My favorite sandwich is the Disco which has turkey, mixed green lettuce, tomato, and smoky bacon on a sourdough roll. It's really damn good and comes with a nice little side salad with a balsamic dressing. This particular location is in the shadow of the Transamerica building in a little alley. There's limited seating inside, but a lot of tables outside. Just be aware that it gets really busy around lunch, they run out of ingredients towards the end of the day, and there are hyper aggressive pigeons outside who will seriously try and steal your food! The place is really clean and well taken care of and the staff behind the counter are all super nice and pay attention to your order! read more

Mixt Greens has excellent salads -- I always opt for creating my own, because there are tons of delicious, fresh ingredient options. I love the combination of corn off the cob (when it's in season), carrots, cucumber, dried cranberries and spicy peanuts with grilled chicken. I really appreciate that the chicken is warm, too (I don't know why, but cold chicken in a salad always seems odd to me). The fat-free balsamic dressing is tart and tasty, and the regular balsamic is good, too. The line is usually very long (a testament to how good Mixt Greens is!), but I really avoid coming here before 2:00, because otherwise, the wait is at least 15-20 minutes and not worthwhile on a one hour break. As others have mentioned, it's on the expensive side for lunch; salads cost $12 alone, and with a drink, lunch comes to around $15. read more

It's taken me a while to visit Mixt Greens, since there's nothing I like better than a nice mixed salad, but I'm always appalled by the winding line leading out of the storefront that I just finally brought myself to visit yesterday when the line was relatively reasonable. I ended up making my own salad (baby spinach, bacon, egg, red onion, chickpeas, strawberries, & garlic croutons with fat free balsamic) & adding some hanger steak. I was a little shocked at how ginormous the salad was, but apparently, my tummy was quite happy to consume the vast quantities without a problem, & I wasn't starving within 2 hours either, which was pleasantly surprising. My only issue is the cost of the salad (the hanger steak was $3.50 for 5 pieces). If I had just ordered my salad minus the meat, it would have only been $6.95, which would be reasonable. I'm all about the make your own salad life and this place has SO many options of various toppings and stuff to add in order to make your tummy delicious perfect salad. But beware, there is a limit and once you go over it'll cost you let extra topping so plan accordingly. The salad is always super fresh and the servings are MASSIVE but I still find it hard to pay $11 or so dollars for a salad. Regardless definitely a good alternative if you don't mind the splurge. Tips: -lines are super long but go super fast! Plus leaves you time to choose which of the gazillion toppings you want -a lot of the premade salads are just as good plus you get to skip the line -stay within the 6 topping requirement unless you want to pay $1+ per topping! read more

It's not easy to find vegetarian lunch options in the financial district that don't get boring after a couple of weeks. I like salad bars as much as the next person but really, how many days a week can you eat that? (They're also deceptive--you *think* you're not getting too much food but that scale still says $8 when you get to the register.) That said, Mixt Greens makes me want to eat salads every day. I love vegetables, and the ingredients are fresh and inventive (yellow beets). The roasted potatoes are ace. I look at it like this: if I know I'm going to spend $8 for lunch, I want to know that it's good food that I actually want. And I always want to design my own salad (with butter lettuce!). There is almost always a line so bring yer iPod, something to read, or a friend to chat with. Sitting in this place is fun because it's bright after being cooped up in a windowless cube office all morning, but it's freaking loud. I'd still rather stand in line or sit in here drinking the free cucumber water than sit in my windowless cube anytime. Two drawbacks: since they opened the second location further up Sansome the best salad chef is gone (he was an artist with the blue cheese) and a couple of the new people are on the stingy side (let's have some more of those yellow beets, eh?). Mixt greens has amazing salads, they also have amazing lines, and big pricetags. If I'm serious about eating salad, this is where I'll go, but thats very rare, waiting 30 minutes for a salad is not a great use of my time. read more

My only problem with this place is that the salads are a little pricey, even if you don't add everything. I guess it benefits you more to just add more things, as it would be a better deal. Today is a sad day. I must say goodbye to what had (briefly) become my new favorite lunch spot. The relationship was dreamy at first. Delicious, fresh, organic salads all my very own - I could order off the menu or make my own. I confess there were a few initial bumps - longer than expected lines on my return trips (even at 10:45 a.m.!), and a bit of questioning about the cost of what at the end of the day was a whole lot of lettuce. However, I brought some whole wheat bread with me to work to pop in the toaster to beef up my salads and discovered you could purchase pre-made salads from the frig near the register to avoid the lines. I was back on track. And then tragedy struck. I made the mistake of deviating from my routine. I had ordered salads probably 5-6 times, but got a wild hair and decided to try their Disco Turkey sandwich one day. ALL-H*LL-BROKE-LOOSE. I don't know if it was the turkey or the aioli that did me in, but before finishing the first half of my sandwich I started to feel weird. Within an hour I was downright ill. As I watched a 75 year old woman outpace me on my way to BART while dragging myself home early from work, I cursed the day I ever heard the name Mixt Greens. To make matters worse Mixt Greens handled the situation poorly. I waited a few days until I was a bit better and phoned the store to inquire about other people complaining about getting sick. (I was appropriately polite as my initial urges to scream about justice and demand the rolling of heads seemed a little overkill now that I was no longer writhing in pain and seemingly would make it to my next birthday.) The guy who answered phone definitely made every effort to give me his "we're so sorry" voice, took my info and said someone would be contacting me (his general manager, I think). That was a month ago, and nothing. Nada, zip, zero, zilch. Needless to say, if you decide to try Mixt Greens, I certainly hope you have better luck.
