I appreciated that they covered the bowl in foil, then the plastic lid, so by the time I ate it (probably an hour after it had left the restaurant), it still retained some warmth. Let's face it: Proper Food is improperly priced for the FiDi working drone unless you're the C-suite type which means your admin is getting the food anyway, so what are you whining about? This is their second location, and I was somewhat underwhelmed by my experience at their other spot at the 100 1st Street. There was a lot of empty space on those shelves and even more apathy when I came in to buy a late lunch at half past one. So when I heard they opened on Montgomery in a sea of self-absorbed suits and geeks, I was initially hesitant. But I sharpened up this time and decided I'd go before the lunch rush at a little past 11AM. What a difference a couple of hours made as the shelves were fully stocked and the staff was perky and attentive. Choice was actually hard this time, but I decided to get the $13.95 Kale Salad with Achiote-Poached Prawns. What the hell is achiote? I didn't know, but I've been in a kale mood lately, so why not. Besides, I got seven of those suckers, somewhat congealed though the salad had a nice crunch thanks to the radish, jicama and toasted almonds. Too much is not always a good thing. Browsing through Proper Food's menu online, I had a hard time picking a dish. I didn't want any farro, quinoa, noodles, almonds... basically any carb or nut. And I don't like savory and sweet mixed together. It proved to be a difficult feat when picking what I wanted for our office lunch last Friday, November 13th. *Fall salad with salmon: roasted fresh salmon, red leaf lettuce, romaine, pickled carrots, pecorino cheese, mint, bulls blood (microgreen), house-made white balsamic vinaigrette, no poached pears, golden apples, zesty almonds ($11.95) With all my modifications, I got the simpler salad that I wanted. The ingredients tasted fresh and I liked the lightness of the white balsamic. The salmon looked like a small serving, but it was actually a larger piece than I thought. Maybe because the salad was so big. Unfortunately, the salmon was a bit overcooked, so it was rather dry. Proper Foods is a good option if you like fancy salads with a lot of ingredients. It comes with a side of sour cream and lettuce. Very tasty and filling! 2. Sweet potato enchiladas - Here's another great option if you're looking for an alternative to the chicken enchiladas. As you can see by my photo it had MAYBE 3/4 of a tablespoon of goat cheese, and that's being generous. Came with some pine nuts. Had about 12 cranberries in there somewhere. I enjoy going to Proper Food (116 Montgomery Street) for my takeout runs which occur at least every other week on Wednesday mornings. The food is delicious even though the menu changes a lot during the seasons of the year. The service is awesome, and I managed to take this opportunity to my parents' advice by choosing 3 items to go. The ambiance isn't too loud for me and I'm able to concentrate on picking up the items that I chose for lunch and dinner and possibly as a beverage to keep me hydrated. It's such a disappointment that they removed the Carnitas Burrito from the menu that appears as a PDF document on Proper Food's website. My mom and I enjoyed consuming it for dinner together and it wasn't bad at all. The best part is, it's located across the street from my office, and I don't have any problems walking there after I exit the courtyard that's located on Bush Street. I recommend it to everyone who works hard in order to make money at their job sites. read more

Ok, second shot - same rating. This time I got a "salad" of calamari a la plancha with black quinoa, asparagus, feta and beans. (I don't know why they even mention the beans, because there were probably five in there total?) Unfortunately the calamari was a little fishy tasting - either not fresh or not cooked quite right. (Still edible, but I wouldn't get it again.) The quinoa and asparagus were fresh and well cooked. The feta was barely detectable, maybe a tablespoon or less. Unfortunately I didn't love the dressing, either. It tasted like tangy buttermilk and not citrus/coriander as described. Personally, I would love to see more vegetables and greens in the salads here. It seems those are actually the least represented ingredients (meanwhile, there's a ton of quinoa), but since they're the healthiest I would prefer a flipped ratio. I probably sound like a whiny, picky eater. But don't I have the right to be, when I am paying $14 for a pre-made, take-away salad? I hate that I like Proper Food so much. I feel like such a lazy yet bougie millennial. It's refrigerated, pre-made food that's definitely more expensive and smaller portions than plenty of other lunch options downtown. Or even down the street. And yet...I would be lying if I gave Proper Food any less than a 4. A few points: 1) If you work anywhere around FiDi/downtown SF, it's pretty impossible to beat the convenience, since there's probably a location a 5 minute walk away. Then you pick what you want, bring it to the register, pay for it, and you're good to go. Some visits may have a few extra minutes of waiting from your food being warmed up (depending on what you get), but all in all everything is super quick. 2) It makes you feel like you're being healthy. Whether their food is ACTUALLY healthy is yet to be seen, since they don't offer nutrition facts, unfortunately. But you won't find anything like a burger & fries, and you don't feel greasy or bloated after eating any of their food, so that's something. 3) Most importantly, the food tastes good. I'd recommend their sweet potato egg muffin nest for a small bite to eat for breakfast, or one of their breakfast burritos if you need a bigger meal. For lunch, my favorites have been the coconut prawns & kale salad, and the citrus octopus & farro salad, though on occasion I've picked up a breakfast burrito for lunch too. It's a little pricey, but I always enjoy what I eat. I'm still kind of bitter at myself for being one of the plenty that give this place a high rating but...that's honesty for you. read more

When I need healthy food on the go, this is my go-to spot. Conveniently located near my office and lots of choices for interesting healthy food that changes with the seasons. It is a great and sustainable concept. I've had the Seared Lemon Pepper Tuna Salad, Fall Salad, Summer Salad, another Ahi Tuna salad with won-ton strips and the Tofu Burrito. I hate boring salads so I was pleasantly surprised to be excited by the interesting ingredients used. I personally didn't need even need to add the accompanied dressing. I thought the salads were tasty, fresh and really filling. Today, I wanted a change and got the tofu burrito. It is a little on the bland side but it is pretty filling as well. I'll probably revert back to their salads from now on. The first time I came here, I had serious sticker shock but after trying the food, I feel that you get a good portion of healthy food for what you're paying for. Still pricey though. read more

They don't mention this nor is there a sign, they just sneak it into your total. Seems like a unethical way to squeeze more money out of customers, their stuff is over priced as it is. I'm not sure how this place has such a high Yelp reviews, but the food is that good. I will say that they are fast, friendly and the place is clean. However, that doesn't make up for their sucky food. Now to be clear, the food isn't TERRIBLE but I wouldn't go out of my to go there. I've had a couple things there. You walk in and there is an open fridge with many shelves with their food to choose from. On any given day you can find breakfast burritos, salads, sandwiches, plate lunches, etc. All made the day of and packaged for a quick grab and go. Some of the items are meant to be warmed up as well which Proper takes care of as you pay. I've never had a bad item. Most items seem tasty and then I try them and they end up being very good. It's averagely priced for the financial district but I'd rather pay the same amount for fresher and highly quality lunch items than a sandwich from Subway.
