Mixed Grounds Coffee isn't just another coffee shop, it's much more! It's a popular, locally-owned roastery and cafe located in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. Known for its Hip-Hop music theme, cool merch, and specialty drinks like Vietnamese Iced Coffee, Aztec Mocha Iced Latte 10/10, Horchata Iced Latte, and the house-made MG Signature Drink (pandan syrup and coconut cream). I was surprised to see they also serve craft beer, wine, soju cocktails and seasonal drinks on the menu. When we arrived, the atmosphere was lively with music pulsing through the coffee shop. They also had foosball tables, checkers, and a deck of cards for patrons to enjoy. I ordered the Aztec Mocha Iced Latte- it blended bold espresso and rich chocolate with warm cinnamon and a spicy pinch of cayenne pepper for that warm kick at the end! My wife ordered the Horchata Iced Latte- it was sweet and creamy with a nutty taste! Lowkey, it reminded of an arroz con leche pudding 10/10! We also ordered the Cinnamon Roll- it was nice and warm (just the way we like it). Overall, we had an awesome time with friends!
This is one of my favorite coffee shops! I'd argue this is THE spot for locals as it's such a great community spot. They host various community events, many of which revolve around live entertainment, but I'm usually here during the day when I need a change in scenery or want to grab a good latte. They have a great selection of drinks with unique options that aren't seen elsewhere. My go-to drink is their Buko Pandan Special, which contains their homemade Pandan syrup and is topped with 3 cubes of coco jelly and coconut cream! Such a unique and fun twist of flavor with the added textural contrast from the jelly! My only gripe is this drink is only served in one size. I love the open concept of the shop and how inviting it is. This is one of the few coffee shops that I feel comfortable working at for hours without pressure to leave as the space itself is huge and you're in the company of many other remote workers who are working in peace. Great atmosphere all around to relax in or get some work done. There are also 2 gender neutral restrooms that are always clean with a shared central sink area. I will say that parking is challenging. If you're lucky enough, you can score a spot out front, but you usually have to street park.
This chai is perfection. Will be my new fave drink. The baristas are helpful and dress so aesthetic. Love this place. Will be back for chai.
My favorite neighborhood coffee shop! Moved here 4 months ago and I come almost every week to order my favorite coffee, the ca phe muoi!! The space: large & open space, great spot to do some wfh or studying! They host lots of community events throughout the month. The drink: the ca phe muoi stays in the back of my mind all day. It's so good I cannot get enough. Coming from someone who is Vietnamese, Vietnamese coffee is too overwhelming to drink regularly even though it's delicious. The ca phe muoi still has the strong flavor of Vietnamese coffee but with a lighter punch and the contrast of the salt is divine. The staff: so friendly and so nice!
Super fun coffee shop! Food: 2/5 The cream on my Peach Cobbler Matcha is incredibly dairy tasting, like evaporated heavy cream. I don't think this would be that big of an issue if I ordered my $8 matcha was cow milk, but with the $0.50 oat milk, the cream was very strong. Service: 3/5 Nothing to comment; no news is good news. Atmosphere: 4/5 Honestly, this is one of the most fun coffee shops I've ever been to. There are lots of open spaces and even games to play! I can also only imagine what their community concerts look like here. I would recommend this place to someone looking for a place to do work or to friends wanting to hang out in a fun third space. I love many things about this coffee shop. The musical theme sits well with me. They have art displayed of well known musicians, instruments on the walls and they have a monthly calendar of live music from DJ's to concerts. A DJ played cool tunes while visiting. The seating options are diverse and plentiful with patio seating, high chairs along a counter with indoor/outdoor space and lounge type seating inside. The spaces are also dog friendly, which is an added bonus. The staff is friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We had a tasting of a specialty beverage "Ca Phe Muoi" from their menu, along with some assorted creams puffs from a the local Korean Bakery Mon Chourie...I am in love with both! They also have vendors who have additional food offerings on the patio, this day it happened to be tacos and nachos. There was a large group scrapbooking, so they do support community activities. The hype about this spot had me curious -- drinks, live music, dance classes... I dig it. Here was my experience. AMBIANCE Parking: Street parking. It can get busy, so come early and give yourself time to find a spot. Seating: Indoor seating plus some outdoor patio space. Pretty spacious overall -- probably room for around 50 people. Vibes: Feels like the warm-up to North Park -- a mix of bars and eateries nearby. The café itself shares space within the apartment complex, which makes it feel dynamic and alive. There are often events happening: live DJs, open mic nights, dance classes -- you name it. The aesthetics are eclectic: sofas, lounge chairs, photos of iconic musicians, and even glimpses of office or gym space nearby. It's an interesting blend, but it works. Great place to socialize, chill, or get some work done while still feeling part of something. FOOD / DRINKS Guava Matcha Latte (Modified) - Recommend Usually this drink is coffee-based, but I was happy they offered a matcha variation. Visually, the layered green and pink tones were pleasing. Flavor-wise, the guava softened the earthy matcha and added a subtle sweetness that made it more approachable without overpowering it. Smooth, balanced, and fun. SERVICE I believe her name was Mel -- friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Great energy. TL;DR OVERALL 5 Stars. Wonderful spot. Good flavors, reasonable prices, and consistently great vibes. I appreciate that there's always something happening here. If you're someone who likes to be productive but still enjoy an active, creative environment, this place hits. Mixed Grounds is the kind of café that feels intentionally built for community. It's street parking, so you might need to drive around a couple times when it gets busy. But the space itself is huge, with both indoor and outdoor seating. It's a great spot to work/study in the morning. There's lots of room to spread out and settle in for a few hours. They also host live events and pop-ups. It definitely makes the space feel active and community-focused rather than just another coffee shop. Last time I went they had banh mi and Vietnamese flavor inspired cookies! Drink-wise, the buko pandan coffee was the standout. It's creamy with a nice coffee flavor and not overly sweet. The jelly at the bottom is such a fun touch and makes the last sip/bite extra enjoyable. Even my very picky dad liked it, which says a lot. I also tried the matchata (matcha + horchata). It wasn't anything mind-blowing, but you can definitely taste both flavors and the matcha quality seems solid. The chai, unfortunately, was pretty watered down. I wouldn't recommend it. Customer service was genuinely great though. Alexis helped me right away and made sure I was happy with my order, which I really appreciated. She made adjustments to the chai, and when that didn't work she had no problem replacing it with a different drink. Food-wise, the rosemary sea salt bagel was really solid. They also had other baked treats that looked great, but I didn't get to try them this time. Overall, Mixed Grounds is less about just grabbing coffee and more about the vibe. It's spacious, welcoming, and clearly designed as a place for people to gather, work, and hang out. Definitely a spot I'd come back to.
Quite a cool and funky coffee shop with very interesting seating. Has a lot of space and is very spread out. Good place to post up if you're trying to work for a while on a laptop. They've got some unique drinks that you won't really see anywhere else, so I definitely give them props for standing out! I went with the Pandan latte which is one of my favorite flavors lately. The taste was pretty good, but it was very very sweet, and really lost the coffee taste. Would like to go back and try out a more neutral espresso drink and see how the flavor of the espresso itself is. Also got a cardamom bun which has been one of my favorite Scandinavian treats. But honestly, it really didn't taste much of cardamom at all, and it has a maple glaze on top which really drowns out any other flavor. It's a bit on the dry side too. It's kinda like an ikea cinnamon roll, nothing too exciting. I think the atmosphere + cool selection of drinks definitely makes up for it though, enough for me to definitely be interested in coming back!
Peach cobbler matcha was delicious! I also got a rosemary and sea salt bagel and loved that they gave 2 cream cheese packets because I didn't have to ration it on my bagel. Definitely coming back to try the buko pandan latte!
So I remember when Mixeds Grounds coffee was on Imperial Ave. Decided to stop by and try it again after a few years. I got the iced Ca Phe Muoi. I was the only one there, no order ahead of me and I felt like it took a couple minute too long to get my drink. Anyways, the drink itself was pretty good. The salt was a bit odd but not bad. The barista was chill and friendly. The place was nice and of course part of a large apartment complex. Plenty of space or hanging out or working.
Went to Mixed Grounds Coffee today and honestly loved it. I got the horchata latte and my boyfriend ordered the Ca Phe Muoi. My horchata latte was a little sweet, but not nearly as sweet as his. I'm not usually into super sweet coffee drinks, but mine was still really delicious. He absolutely loved his and would 100% order it again. A fun bonus is that dogs are allowed inside which isn't normally the case. We split the bacon and egg empanada and it was fantastic. Super flavorful and perfectly cooked. The people working there were incredibly friendly and kind, which always makes the experience better. The space itself is even cooler in person. It feels like a spot you actually want to hang out in, not just grab coffee and leave. They're open until 10pm most nights, and Friday through Sunday they have live music. They also serve beer and wine and host food pop ups, which is such a fun bonus. We'll definitely be back, especially for a music night.
Mixed Grounds Coffee is such a great spot to go to if you're looking for fun vibes and reasonable priced coffee! I came on a Saturday which was very fun because they had a live dj set that added to the ambiance. The interior is also very cozy with ample seating areas and lots of games the patrons can use. Ordering here was super fast and easy and the staff is all so nice. I ordered the Ca Phe Muoi and I loved it so much. The quality espresso pairs well with the cream and sea salt. Everything was perfectly balanced and delicious! I also tried the Buko Pandan special, and that was also very tasty! The buko and pandan flavors were very balanced and complimented each other well. Reminds me of an elevated halo halo, in regards to the flavor profiles! I would recommend coming here if you're in town!

Decent drinks, great entertainment, and brownie points for supporting other local artists and small businesses! They occasionally offer live music, but they oftentimes host other businesses for food. The ambiance is great, interior has plenty of seating, and their service is decent as well. I love their variety in drinks, and they offer both unique coffeehouse staples and cocktails! Their pandan matcha was not too milky or sweet, but still super delicious. Their lychee cocktail is sweet, but you can barely taste the alcohol. I do not recommend the hot chocolate, it was too milky and barely had any chocolate. Unfortunately, parking is hard, and the only available option is street parking nearby. read more

Walked by this area on a Sunday and had to check it out! The place is super spacious with tall ceilings and has plenty of comfy seating for work or to hang out. We had no problem finding space to sit on Sunday morning. There's also a chess set in the corner! They have live music on the weekends and a little stage area set up for a band. Service was friendly and helpful. In terms of drinks, I got: Chai latte - syrup is made in-house and not too sweet. The spices are super flavorful and a unique mix (not your standard chai, and the unique balance of spices is really tasty!) They have whole milk, almond, and oat milk as options for the drink. Chaggaccino - a great immune boosting drink and tastes just like a mocha! They have several unique menu items as well that I'm looking forward to try next time! read more
Went to visit the place with the girls. The place looks so hip, trendy, as well as relaxing. Very spacious but inviting. We went on a Saturday. There was a taco vendor setting just right before the entrance for the cafe. Staff were very nice, greeted us with a warm smile. Shout out to Kwa, owner, funny and friendly. Love it! Came here around 9am and got myself their iced buko pandan special and their bacon/egg/cheese empanada. Right when I walked in, I was immediately greeted and acknowledged, which I did appreciate (the lil things haha). They also made sure to check-in with me for any adjustments needed after I got my drink. As for the items I ordered, I enjoyed everything about their iced buko pandan drink--it had the perfect amount of sweetness to it--and their empanada! Empanada had the perfect amount of flavor and crunch, I'm definitely going to go back another time to try their chorizo (or soyrizo?) option. I was at Mixed Grounds for about an hour and I did notice that the space does get busy quick after 9:30am. It eventually got somewhat loud inside with the music playing, but I didn't mind cause I had my AirPods in and I wasn't able to hear much unless if I took it out. Overall, a solid place to relax, meet up with a friend (also very dog-friendly), and unwind in North Park. The only thing that will require some more patience is the parking situation (since it's obviously in the busier side of town), but I had no issues parking a block away. What a fun gem to stumble upon! I was walking around the neighborhood to pass time before my haircut and popped into Mixed Grounds for a cuppa. This space is GORGEOUS! The seating area is spacious, the natural daylight is chef's kiss, the aesthetic is sleek, modern, and warm, and I really appreciated the openness comfort of the space. The menu is extensive and features quite a few specialty options. After taking a few moments to decide, I opted for the pandan latte, which happens to be the most popular drink ordered here. I could see and taste why! Visually, the drink is beautifully composed with a layer of pandan syrup, coconut cream, milk and coffee, and a garnish of pandan jelly. And the flavor?! OUTSTANDING. I really enjoyed how this was a moderatly sweet and well-balanced drink. The alchemy of the flavors tasted poetic! I could tell by this one drink that everything is made with intention and with the customer's experience in mind. PHENOMENAL. I can't wait to come back and visit this spot again. Hopefully next time, I'll be able to catch some live music and performances and to try more menu options. I tried the seasonal guava latte and was so excited for it but the guava syrup tasted like cinnamon and not like the fruit at all. I also am not a fan of warm spices so that was disappointing. My friend tried the cold brew tonic and also didn't like that it was more ok the bitter side and you couldn't really taste the cherry flavor. The inside of the place was huge and had tons of seating with a dj playing live music. It was a great event and a fun vibe I would go back to try the Vietnamese coffee. read more

I love this place! The vibes are great, they have Dj's that play good music and it's a great place to hangout. They allows pets (I always bring my dogs) and have dog snacks. They also have a table where you could paint and color. Great place I highly recommend this place! Me and my friends come study here. read more

LEVELED UP THE COFFEE SHOP VIBES (5 Stars) - DRINKS, good - PRICE, average - SERVICE, ok - AMBIANce, loud and different This was a different take on a coffee shop that we all may be use to. Coffee shop mixed with new modern apartment complex lobby. DJ spinning loud music in the corner - don't come here trying to come for an intimate conversation because most people are projecting their decibels for their conversation to be heard. So you have music going on, really loud conversations by alot of people, apartment residence foot traffic, and baristas calling out orders you can't hear and just hover near the coffee bar hoping your drink pulls up. They do have WiFi. But the username and password is on this tiny tap at the edge of the register A you won't know it's there unless an employee points it out. BUKU PANDAN SPECIAL ($6.75) - didn't expect to see Filipino influenced drinks but was very proud when I saw it. I immediately had to try this and it did not disappoint. It is on the sweeter side and I got my drink decaf. Couldn't taste the bean profile because of the flavors but the drink itself went down easy. Had a good 50/59 taste of coconut and pandan. My coworker told me about this place when I asked if she had any recommendations for a coffee shop near our office when I was visiting. She highly recommended this place so I had to check it out. First - I loved the inside/outside feel of the coffee shop. So much seating and very cool vibe. I had not eaten at all in the morning so was hungry. The people in the counter were so helpful and I even got to sample a new flavor they were working on! I ended up getting the Horchata Iced Latte and chicken empanada. I really liked the horchata iced latte. It actually had the horchata taste and was delicious. The chicken empanada was so flavorful. It looked more like a calzone but it was still so good and flaky. The place is spectacular! Space has monthly events and has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Comfy seating. The staff were really helpful and nice. Coffee was nothing special it was a standard coffee. I love the vibe so I'd come back. I lucked out with parking right in front but fyi to those who aren't as lucky.. it can be tricky. Ah, I went here yesterday (Tuesday, July 1st) to show a friend the spot. I decided to get the $6.50, 16 oz, Ca Phe Muoi, it's salted coffee. The description says it's made with espresso shots so I thought that was a bit odd since it's "ca phe" so my initial thought was they were going to make Vietnamese drip. Anyways, the drink turned out pretty foamy, light colored, and milky-- I think I was mainly drinking condensed milk and cream. Which was a bummer because I am a lover of salted (they use sea salt) coffee! Worker was kind, but maybe needs to work on his drink making? It was just a miss on the drinks, but at least there was ice and that kept us cool. Next time I'll just go back to getting the pandan special. My mom and her friend ordered the $5, OG Lemonade, add lychee syrup. Because we saw they had Lychee Lemonade Matcha, but none of us like matcha so we basically asked for it to be removed. The guy accommodated-- but in the end the lychee flavor was really light. Having some lychee fruit inside the drink would also be delicious (just a thought). The drink itself was not too sweet, a bit tart, and refreshing. Interior is clean and lots of seating (indoor and outdoor). Will be back, to try something else off the menu. Also, don't read my review and think that the Ca Phe Muoi is bad-- my coffee friend recommended this drink, it just depends on who makes it! The menu is nice and diverse, come and try. What I might not enjoy, may turn out to be something that you really like. I've actually been here 3 other times (once to celebrate my bday!) and had amazing experiences! I thought I wrote reviews for them, but perhaps I only did it for Instagram. Those other times, I'd give Mixed Grounds Coffee-- 5 stars for sure. I enjoyed a nice cortado and cheddar and chive scone from this Mix Grounds Location. Although the cortado was not serve in its proper gibralta, the cortado was very well made and delicious. The scone was quite good too. It tasted great and came with a good amount of cheddar in it. They warm it up for you, so it is nice and warm when you get it. They also offer various empanadas, muffins, bagels, and cookies. The staff members were friendly. They offer a very good amount of inside at outside seating. read more
Mixed Ground Coffee was among the latest to open in the area last month. I actually tried to visit but drove relentlessly around a few blocks and because I couldn't find parking, I just drive off. Last week, while in the area, I was able to take a parking spot right out front of the cafe and stopped in. The coffee shop occupies a small space of the ground level of a newly built apartment complex in North Park and parking is a major challenge. I had already previewed the menu and was ready to order. I stood at the counter for a longer than a reasonable expectation without being acknowledged by the two staffers...NOT GOOD. Nobody, especially a customer should be ignored. I had to shout out and say, 'Hey, can I order?!!' As usual, the female staffer acted catty and still continued her unprofessional behavior. The male staffer was literally across from me and finally takes my order. Annoyed, I hesitatingly ordered one of the signature drinks: BUKO Pandan special, an espresso drink with homemade Pandan syrup, which is Pandanus amaryllifolius, is a tropical plant with fragrant leaves commonly used in Southeast Asian cuisine for flavoring and aroma, often compared to vanilla. This drink was really good. Unfortunately, because of the unprofessional demeanor from the staffers, it diminished the enjoyment potential for me. And as it turns out, the owner of the shop just happen to be seated closeby for me to express my displeasure of the lack of acknowledgment, as lack of service. The owner: Kwa was apologetic but the damage was done, because the staffers are clueless of their subpar service or even common sense. Despite, how cool the place is or how good the coffee drink was, would I want to repeat a negative experience, NO!
