Fine dining overlooking Bromley Brook. Exceptional food, ambiance and service, consistent for decades. We love this place

First visit. A Sunday night early reservation. We were seated immediately. I ordered the French onion soup (perfect size and quite tasty) and the black tailed shrimp with parmesan risotto with a sauce (also very tasty and also very rich). My partner had the Lobster Corn Soup which she enjoyed, but as the daughter of an Iowa farm boy would have enjoyed even more corn. Entree was Lobster Stuffed Salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Again very tasty but with the sauce also very rich. Portion sizes for everything were quite appropriate- not too much and we skipped dessert because we were full. I has a glass of a very nice Sancerre with my meal. Service was attentive and personable. I am guessing that we had the fall menu and that the summer menu is likely a bit lighter but I do not know that for a fact. I would definitely return and would classify this in the infrequent "special occasion" category. Only one small grumble --. The rolls and butter served before appetizers were phenomenally ordinary. Beautiful and intimate French restaurant with excellent food and service. My husband is from France and was very excited to try this restaurant and it did not disappoint! Everything was delicious from the complimentary bread to all of our apps and entrees. Everything was plated beautifully and was very reminiscent of our time in France. Unfortunately they ran out of crème brûlée which is his favorite so I guess we will just have to come back! However, we shared the chocolate cake for dessert and it was perfect! DELICIOUS! One of my favorite meals ever. I have a gluten and dairy allergy and it was no problem. I got the veal with asparagus, potatoes, and spinach and they made it in an olive oil based sauce. They brought me warm gluten free bread with olive oil to start. And the sorbet for dessert was 10/10. Highly recommend!!! read more

The food was good. I had the filet followed up with Crème Brûlée & HH had the lobster stuffed salmon with chocolate cake for dessert. This was our fourth time eating here over the past 30+ years and we do love it. But I agree with the reviewer who described the ambience as grandmotherly. One of the strange (to me) things was that we were seated without menus including wine & cocktail menus. When our server approached the table and asked "What would we like to drink?" We didn't know the options. She did this with every table, we noticed. What's great about having a drink menu before being asked is that there might be signature cocktails. Do they serve craft beer? Do they offer unique martinis? Just a thought. As always the view of the flowing but frozen stream along the dining room windows is lovely. read more

Why does anyone go here? We feel like if we are not in the right group you get seated way out in the generally empty larger room. If you go, ask for the room along the brook. That offers nice views and cozier atmosphere. The food was only so so and I ordered a gin & tonic which had no gin in it- I'm sure. And the waitperson was not happy with my comment. . Disappointed not only in the food and service but that I neglected to check out the reviews ahead of time. I recognize that we are not in normal times. Nonetheless, it's getting tiresome that restaurants seem to feel justified in charging exorbitant prices for anything they serve. Let me start with the food, $45 for a steak that is over cooked (medium well and I asked for medium rare). The wine was brought to the table but no wine glasses, even after our appetizer was delivered and consumed. There still was no wine glasses. Joseph the server was pleasant enough but lacked training and seemed overwhelmed with the 4 tables assigned to him. I had to flag down the bartender and ask for some wine glasses (this would be actually funny, if I were not spending way north of $200 for dinner) It may be helpful to also note that the decor could use some uplifting. In case, you are thinking of a romantic dinner with that special someone, you may also want to consider the 80's music and tired furniture. read more

My husband wanted to surprise me with a new place for my birthday. We had heard good reviews of this place. The positive - the waterfalls out the back were lovely and our waiter was super sweet and attentive. The cons - Hostess was beyond rude and dismissive. When my husband mentioned he has requested a window she went off about how she writes a w next to a res and it wasn't her. She kept on with muttering throughout the evening and is clearly in the wrong job. The food was meh. My husbands food was not cooked, and they did take that off the menu, which was nice. I was excited they had chicken paillard but sadly it was nothing like it should be. For the amount of money we spent, it does not warrant being treated horribly. (Or having mediocre food.) That was the worst part. Chefs may have on or off days, but front of house is key. There are better restaurants in Manchester and I suggest going to them instead. read more

We had a lovely dinner at Mistral's last evening. The staff was friendly, helpful and very welcoming. The food was very good from the appetizer, soup, salad ,the duck entree and dessert. Wine list was well balanced and we enjoyed the wine with dinner. The ambiance is wonderful with views of a fast flowing mountain stream and a quiet, peaceful separation of the tables. The background music was not to our taste but it was soft enough not to be disturbing. We're looking forward to returning soon! read more

I go with a group of friends during out annual get together and have never been disappointed. Exquisite view, impeccable service and flawless dishes! The past two years I have had the Chateaubriand and just wow! Perfectly cooked, with tasty vegetables. I have never been able to finish my portion so am thrilled to get to enjoy at lunch the following day :) The wine selection is also surprisingly vast! The waiter has never lets us down, finding the perfect bottle for our meal and mood. This could be a bad thing, so always choose designated driver at start of meal (lol). I have tasted many desserts and the chocolate is devine ! All are good but chocolate is usually my fav!! Make this a stop if you get a chance. Just hosted a dinner for 18. Couldn't be happier. All our guests raved about the food especially the lamb chops. The Mediterranean salad was excellent- the right balances of ingredients. Cheryl helped with a special menu and was responsive as we worked from a distance. The location along side running water and the interior so warmly appointed was perfect for our guests who came from all over the US. Highly recommend. Oh yes. The desserts. This restaurant is great! Chef Dana was super accommodating with my raw foods request. He made me a giant beautiful salad that satisfied. Delicious. Good looking wine list and a nice dining room atmosphere with a beautiful view out the back windows onto a running stream over bedrock. It's great. We have been coming to mistrals for several years. The food and service seem to be going downhill. It took us an hour to get our salad. The swordfish was dried out. Mistral's is definitely the best restaurant in the area in terms of quality food and what you're paying for. Staff was friendly and courteous as well. We ate here the night after Christmas, we were prepared to be wowed based on reviews I read here on Yelp, and we just weren't. We ordered the two appetizer specials of the evening, one was seared diver sea scallops, which were delicious, but there were only two on the plate. We are used to smaller portions at finer restaurants, but this really strained the concept. We also had a chilled pate spread with toasted baguette slices and some kind of fruit compote on the side, it was pretty good, but we have had better. For entree, we ordered the chateaubriand for two. The table-side presentation and service was lovely, but the food itself was just... meh. Again, we've had better. The dessert menu was spectacularly unremarkable, so much so that nothing jumped out at us, even though we typically always order a dessert to share when we dine out. In fact, the entire menu was pretty sparse, nothing very imaginative or inventive, and not very many choices in general. Bottom line: it was an okay meal. It was not a $200 meal. We may try it again, simply because there aren't many great dining options in the Manchester/Stratton area, and since this one has been rated so highly, we'd be willing to give it another shot. Maybe. On a side note, we were seated next to a large group that included 2 small children, one of whom was about 2 years old, and very cranky, undoubtedly due to the late hour. I love children, I have 5 myself, and I also have a 2 year old. My husband & I go out to dinner to have some quiet time away from our children. Parents, PLEASE--you may think your children are just delightful, and undoubtedly they are, but they just don't belong at a high-end restaurant at 8pm. Mistrals is our favorite special occasion restaurant in Manchester. The view of the flume at night is entirely romantic, and is matched by perfectly prepared cuisine. Chef Owner Dana really knows his stuff. Unlike so many restaurants these days, where everything is "A La Carte-to-death, your plate will have at least 4 types of veggies/starch beautifully presented. One of the best meals I've had in Manchester. The view out the window is fantastic and the ambiance is wonderful. If you are looking for a nice romantic dinner, this is the place. On first glance the menu seems small and limited, but there is sure to be something to please just about anyone. I would suggest either an appetizer or dessert if you are used to stuffing yourself. Others, meh, if you happen to be going by. This is a 40 minute one for me. Located at the site of the last Toll Gate in Vermont, Mistral's offers French cuisine in an intimate riverside setting. Wine Spectator "Award of Excellence" since 1994. Chef-owned, Dinner from 6 pm. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Yada, yada, yada. A decent wine selection. We had a fabulous bottle of red and an okay bottle of white. Appetizers of pate (it was moose so a bit on the dry side and remined one patron of sliced canned dog food- yuck). I had the warm beet salad with spinach, glazed walnuts and feta cheese topped with a delicate champagne vinagrette. That was wonderful. Another was the special of the cold soup that looked good and while I did not try it, she said it was terrific. I trust her. I had the tuna tartare and it was very good. I have knocked one star off the review for this place because they served my steak over cooked. I asked for a warm pink center. The server said that's medium. I said I think I probably want it medium to medium rare. It arrived predominately gray. A $40 steak should come exactly the way you requested it. They offered to make it again but who wants to wait when everyone else is having dinner... The appetizer of frog's legs was delicious, per my French dining companion :-) My lobster soup was OK. We love Mistral's! My wife & I go there with friends every time we get back to Manchester. The food is superb and creative. The service is attentive & polite. The ambiance is spectacular. I remember the previous establishment, the Tollgate Inn, from way back when. Mistral's has kept some of that old world charm to the place while creating a menu of fusion between the old & the new. My boyfriend Josh and I dined here at the recommendation of our concierge when we found out our original restaurant of choice was closed for the weekend. And we couldn't have had a more enjoyable time. The ambience was perfect for a romantic dinner. The service was impeccable. We shared the cream of spinach soup to start, which was not only delicious, but also quite beautiful in presentation. The salads that come with each entree were not over-the-top, but perfect for what we wanted. Josh had the lobster-stuffed salmon, which he said was amazing. I had the shrimp with garlic risotto, which tasted like heaven on a plate. At the end of the evening we split a Coupe Mistral, coffee ice cream mixed with hazelnuts, drizzled in chocolate syrup and Grand Marnier, and topped with whipped cream. Disappointment!!!! I never even got to eat the food here because they decided to close their doors early due to having an early party and not enough evening reservations. They did this without even the courtesy of a phone call. I had planned my birthday dinner celebration here, and made a reservation weeks in advance. Really sad to write this review. One star is for the fact that the food was overall very good, though nothing special for the prices. The carrot cake was blah.. icing was weird and the profiteroles were stale and the sauces were below average. Our server was very scattered, did not seem to have fine dining training.. asked if we wanted our wine bottle re-corked just after he opened it ???? He was lax in filling water glasses, getting us clean silverware, clearing dishes, returning to the table to ask if we were enjoying our meals. He delivered our desserts and we asked for the check which it took him far too long to bring to us. In the mean time , a woman patron who had been sitting in the other room was having a loud face time call with her mother in the bar area- it was annoying us and the table next to us. Neither the bartender nor the hostess asked her to get off the phone so I politely asked her if she would please get off the call and after I sat down she gave me The middle finger which my children had to witness. We spent $342.00 on a celebration dinner for my husband and I really wish we'd stayed home. Saddest of all- we are locals and like to have a really nice night out with our family once In a while. After a previous experience dining at Mistral's which was great- we were really looking forward to this evening out and it was terrible. We won't take another chance. read more
