Cheshire Cat (left), Caught in the Rain (right). Both Zero Proof...non-alcoholic.

Valet parking entrance on 4th street. So far so good. Got here at 4pm to enjoy outdoor "Happy Hour" before our 5pm dinner. Thursday is Sips & Dips for $5 each. Had the Cheshire Cat and Caught in the Rain. Service was great. Lots of smiles and patient explaining of drinks and appetizers. Showed us a sampling of Sips & Dips. Will provide a separate review for dinner.

Mr. A's has always been a top choice for me when out of town guests are visiting. The views are pretty great and it's a nicer upscale restaurants with true San Diego classy charm. This was my first time back since their remodel a couple years ago and found it to have the same ambiance. I went for dinner to celebrate a birthday and had a great table right at the window. They had just celebrated their 60th anniversary and had some nice stemware announcing that. The wait staff were all very cordial but feel that since my last visit, the service wasn't quite up to par especially for a fine dining restaurant. The extensive wine list is impressive and the food choices are made to fit every preference. As for me, I ordered the Alaskan Black cod that melted in your mouth and had the most perfectly crisp skin Accompanying the fish were two small shrimp, fennel, and potatoes. While I enjoyed it, maybe a few more shrimp would've been nice. For dessert, the mint ice cream baked Alaska can only be described as decadent. As a huge fan of mint chocolate and brownies this was a perfect dessert for me. Presentation was spot on too. A last comment would be that while they acknowledged the birthday at the beginning there was nothing special done. Perhaps a birthday candle in our dessert at the least would've been nice. In all, another good dining experience with lovely views at Mr. A's that impressed my out of town guests.

Arrived walk-in at 6.15pm on a Friday to make it just in time for the special 3-course prix fix menu for $67.50. Everything exceeded our expectation for that price - from presentation of the plate, to portion (I have a healthy appetite), to quality, and service. The view over downtown SD with airplane landing served as a great backdrop for the evening. Thought it's an adult-only restaurant so waited till a kid-free evening to finally come here but was happy to know that kids are also allowed in the restaurant, just not at the bar. I will hope to come back soon!!

Came here for a Valentine's Day brunch with my husband. It was great fine dining experience. Our waitress was helpful and service was attentive. She gave me a great wine suggestion. The views are beautiful! It's on 5th near balboa park a top floor with a rooftop patio. The interior design felt luxury and set a nice ambiance. I enjoyed how it didn't get too loud in there, even on a busy day. Food was amazing! It was a 3 course meal with complimentary pastries to start. I had the French onion soup as a starter and my husband had French toast. For the main course I had a chicken roulade with butternut squash risotto. It was so delicious, I need to learn to make it at home! My husband had steak, cooked perfectly at medium. To finish off the meal we had a chocolate fondue with an array of sweets. After checking out they gave us a couple truffle chocolates to take home. I will definitely consider coming here again!

The service and ambiance here is above all others in San Diego. Watching the planes take off and ships pull in and out of the harbor is worth every penny. The food is okay (pretty pricey in my opinion for the taste) but that's not why we go - you are paying for the experience. We still always go back and try new things. Tried the lamb dish one time and that was my favorite out of all of them.

The food here is definitely top grade. It was our first time getting the lobster roll with chips. The service is always good at the bar. The ambience is very Christmasy and New Year's like. Happy new year San Diego

Great experience and excellent food at Mister A's! My boyfriend and I came in for our anniversary and had a great meal with a great view! Our server was excellent and attentive. We shared a citrus salad to start which was fresh and delicious. The short ribs were excellent and the salmon Wellington was perfect! The Brussels sprouts were a great side. The turtle cheesecake was so good! What a great place to go for a special occasion, we loved watching the planes land and were able to catch a great sunset. 6:15pm reservation was a perfect time. Can't wait to go back!

Went with a friend right after Christmas. Everything we ordered was done well. Service was fantastic. Even on a rainy night we had a nice view of the city. Good spot for a special occasion.

Amazing service, delicious drinks. Didn't get food but most definitely want to go back to try. The views were incredible, fancy and formal vibe. Lovely spot!

Stunning views on the south side!

This is one of the most stunning - if not the most stunning views you can get in SD. On top of a Bankers Hill financial building, you get an awesome 360 view of downtown, Balboa park, Hillcrest etc. Usually places with a view like this, the food does not match but Mister A's definitely has the food to match. We got the salad with citrus, fries, brussels, and scallops. Everything was so so good and fresh; the brussels definitely stood out. We noticed the servers trying to upsell us at every turn but that's kind of what you expect with this kind of place. It was nice that they also brought out a chocolate dessert for birthdays!

We loved watching the planes flying in!

Service and ambience are amazing here -- it was a lovely spring atmosphere and golden hour was beautiful. We also enjoyed watching the planes fly by. That is what you're paying for when you come here, because unfortunately, the food was subpar. The bread appetizer was so good and fresh, but other than that, we didn't rate anything above a 7.5. The truffle fries were also pretty good. We were here for an anniversary and they did bring out a dessert at the end which was very nice.

Mister A's was an amazing experience! We came here for our anniversary, and our view was beautiful. Benjamin was fantastic, He had great recommendations and even better service. Now food wise, I would genuinely go back and reorder every single thing we got. For our appetizers, we got a caesar salad and the focaccia bread which was the perfect start to our meal. We ended off with the red top pork belly and the braised short rib. The flavor in both of these dishes was absolutely amazing, I was speechless. Our drinks were refreshing and delicious as well! Highly recommend :)

Corkage fee? What is fee if our bottle is on the menu?

There is a corkage fee. If you're worried about the price to decant your wine, you're not the clientele that they cater to.

Is Mister A's good for plane watching?

We got some good airplane shots from Mister A's. Checkout our review video to see what we captured

I want to take my mom and the rest of the fam here for her bday but anyone knows if it's ok to take my 3 yr old son here?

You can take children

Are babies and young children allowed or is there an age requirement?

There is no age requirment or minimum. That would be illegal. That being said, babies are far and few between at the restaurant because the environment is quiet. A baby and his or her family would be more comfortable at a busy and loud restaurant.

Do they have a time limit? Want to go for our 1 year anniversary and catch the sunset but not sure what time to book reservation, some say it took 30 mins to be seated some say 10mins. Want to catch the sunset @7pm.?

Yes, they have a two hour limit. They are very prompt about reservations and I've never had to wait. I would recommend 7 PM.

Has anyone tried the tasting menu lately, i.e. in 2023?

I have been there a few times this year already and nobody's mentioned that. So no I haven't tried it. Let us know how it is.

Do they have underground self parking? Or is it only Valet?

I saw parking available all around the area, but we Ubered

Is there a happy hour?

Absolutely not! Drinks start, as I recall at about $15 for wine If you have just a meal and two drinks, it's gonna cost you about $100. Just a heads up.

Do they take walk ins?

Yes. But there is no guarantee that they can seat you. Only if there is availability. Potentially you may also have to wait.

Reservations for bar needed?

No.

What is the corkage fee?

We had dinner at Mister A's tonight, 2/10/2023. The corkage fee was $40. In earlier reviews, I saw it had been $30. I personally feel that $25-$30 is the most that should be charged. Great dinner and experience - just felt the corkage was too high.

Are small dogs allowed on the patio?

Only service and support animals are allowed on the patio.

Is it possible to get up to the restaurant using stairs instead of elevator?

Yes there is ((:

I heard they have a patio where you can get a drink and catch the view without a reservation. Is this still a thing?

Are personal bottles of wine accepted to bring, if so what's the corking fee?

The corkage is $30 per bottle (2 bottle maximum). If the wine brought in is found on their wine list, the price would be half off the wine list price.

Is it too cold to have dinner outside at 8:15pm? Also what is better inside or outside?

They have heaters at each table. Outside is best.

I'll be dining this Saturday with my BF, how strict is the dress code, I wanted to go casual. Casual for me is nice pair of jeans nice blouse and a blazer will that work?

I dont think they'll turn you away but when I went, every body dressed nicely. A lot of the men at least wore a nice shirt with tie and dress pants.

My husband and I are celebrating this weekend, this looks like the perfect place for us and our two daughters. Is the food okay for kids? Mine are not picky by any means just no dairy.

Hi Olivia!... We have a separate kids' menu with options like sliders, chicken breast with veggies, chicken tenders, pastas and more. Feel free to bring them and just let know of any and all dietary restrictions.… Read more

How much for a party of 2 tryin to take my girl here(no drinking)?

Do they have a bar where you can sit and have drink and eat?

I knew it was a speakeasy but he did not. I was trying to double-check on my phone that Craft & Commerce was the right restaurant its housed in (yes) when he tried to jet set off down the block "to keep looking" rather than listen to me. I yelled, "MOTHER!" by accident and then he did truly leave me hahaha. He resurfaced a few minutes later, and then we walked in. It was 5:15 at the time, so 15 minutes after opening. I had NO IDEA how popular this spot was, nor anything about its nation-wide reputation. I actually didn't know that until two days ago when a Yelp-friend at home here in Richmond, Virginia, exclaimed excitedly when I told her we stopped in. The host who greeted us was kind, informed us there had been a line to get in that day, but that they had one barrel left; we jumped on it of course. It was happy hour, so the first cocktail I ordered was dirt cheap at $9. It was the Imperial Hawaiian with gin, rum, lemon, pineapple, and orgeat. I really shouldn't have ordered a second drink after that one, but I did have the classic Saturn later on in the night and it was absurdly good! Definitely my favorite of the two. The moody tiki vibe was so cool and fun. They even had frogs you could play on the tables. We had some fun neighbors too, which livened up the experience even more. We had a great time and both walked out heavily buzzed. We were asleep by 8 that night, but it was worth it!

The menu is mostly rum drinks since this is a rum bar however since I'm not the biggest fan I ordered the only thing with tequila on the menu. My drink was actually really good, it was refreshing, not too sweet or strong at all. I just wish there would be more variety.

(5/5) Our waitress: Kelly, was a sweetheart, informative, mindful on consistent check-in's for refills, drinks, going over steps of the menu (e.g. - small bites, entrees, dessert, didn't feel rushed or too pushy, and considerate on time, and promptness). The waiter that came by mid-video to do the torch component of the butters we added on to our meats was great, I love that it's table side because it enhances the experience to the ambiance and you can squeeze a little video in. If you do go for your birthday, as I did, they provide you with a dessert outside of their choices, however, we did overindulge a bit. Overall, I had a phenomenal experience for my birthday dinner, the music/ambiance was great, service was great, and the food quality for both the meat choices we got, sides (caesar salad, broccoli, and macaroni) we're all SO yummy!
