This was such a wonderful experience. We went to celebrate my birthday this past Saturday for an early dinner so we could catch the sunset. I hadn't considered how sunny it would be, so I started to turn my chair a little to shade my eyes, and our server came over and asked if I wanted sunglasses. That was such a nice touch! Then a little bit later she came over with a purse hook for me (again unprompted). Those little touches made this such a wonderful experience! They have creative cocktails, an extensive wine list, and a twenty-year tawny (my fav)! The bread was crusty on the outside and warm on the inside; the escargot was garlicky, buttery, and incredible. The tomato salad was perfect for a hot day; light, refreshing, and tangy. After much debate between the salmon and the duck, I ended up getting the Salmon Wellington, and it was simply perfect. My husband got the scallops and was equally as impressed with his. We went all out on desserts, as I didn't expect the restaurant to send out a dessert, so when both my husband and I ordered one, we ended up with 3! lol. They were all so good, though; I do not regret it. I got the honey cake- which was delightful. He got the peach dessert, and the restaurant gave me a chocolate mousse. All were phenomenal. Then, as we were leaving, I wanted to snap a picture in front of the sunset/view, and one of the servers stopped and took our picture for us. Just seriously, all around great service! My wife and I made Mister A's as our once or twice a year spot for special occasions. The risotto is our favorite, we ordered it every time when we come here. Usually restaurants which have view are not quite specialized on their food, but here they have it all. Went on a Wednesday evening and it was great. Reservations are easy online. We did find it humorous all the signs about dress code, it really isn't that strict but they keep mentioning it. The view is fantastic and probably the main selling point. The salmon Wellington was an unexpected treat, it seemed so simple but perfectly done. I'm not sure why everyone loved the whipped butter and baguette though, it was nothing special. The tuna crudo and pork belly were delicious, I just wish there was more. Dessert was a bit rich, we got the mousse. The waiter was great, very low key and balanced being helpful with staying out of the way marvelously. Lots of drink options and they came out very fast. Was it worth the $300 for 2 people? Probably not, but it wasn't as far off as I went into it expecting. Besides the bread everything was spot on. Would I go back? DINING AMONGST THE UNWASHED MASSES Even though I have an entourage of assistants who can bring food from the restaurant of my choice at any time, and the option of having my personal chef recreate any dish from any menu, and have the financial wherewithal to buy 10 Manchester Buildings and line them up in my backyard... And even though I generally avoid the gawking-for-celebs energy of a snarky crowd armed with iphones, I do have the singular ability to shut down any restaurant at any time so I can eat there with my gaggle of hangers-on... unbothered by normies. With or without a reservation. Slipping the maître d a few Benjamins helps. So why do I come here? Well, sometimes I just want to be regular and enjoy dinner with the girls. I go out to dinner to participate in idle gossip, be irritated by the rudeness of strangers, and talk about quantum mechanics. Just kidding, talk about skincare, shopping spirals and social media. Duh. On the downside, the group thought they were merely joining a few rich out-of-state tourists sipping cosmos in $900 Christian Louboutin heels. But they found themselves broiling inside the white-hot center of the zeitgeist. This is due to the fact that... I can't leave home without my array of bodyguards, who perch at each corner of the room. In addition to threatening phone-wielding stalkers and walking me to and from the restroom, my security team serves a third purpose: discretely paying the bill with my $5K annual fee Black Card. We ordered the prix-fixe menu and two drinks each. The bill was $4,500, or 5 pair of shoes. The tip was, well I never like to talk about money. The "tea" was free. And the best part was nobody asked for a selfie or an autograph. I guess the memory of seeing me was enough. Pro tip: fine dining with wrap-around patio seating. Unbeatable top-floor views of downtown, San Diego Airport and Balboa Park. Classic 60's charm but modernized. We were there for a retro pre-fixe dinner which included Waldorf salad or lobster bisque, Beef Wellington or Steak Diane, and Cherries Jubilee or Baked Alaska. I've been here twice, and both times the food was good. I do have to give a special shout out to one of the servers: Matthew. Me and my dad came here for the Fourth of July dinner. First off, I'm so thankful they had room so last minute. That's not why I'm writing this review though. Matthew is the best server I have ever had. My dad is picky and always has something to say about servers but he was thoroughly impressed with Matthew. In his words "This guy has mastered the art of serving". Matthew was very thoughtful. Every single thing from where he stood, what he said, what he did.. it was all mindfully executed. He even asked me how I was doing/if I was okay because at one point i guess my energy kind of dropped. Very observant and definitely made it a memorable experience. I'm writing this review almost a month later so that should tell you what you need to know... I still think of this experience. Expensive place. Very. They add fees that make your check go from a couple hundred to a couple hundred more. Make sure you're prepared for that. Tip is included but you can also add extra. Locating the restaurant can be a tad confusing if you don't do valet. Valet is like $25 or something like that so just for the sake of the experience of having someone walk you up the elevator to the restaurant, I would do valet. The view is nice. I have sat inside and outside. The view is like a city view. What you would expect to see in New York. You do see some ocean from a distance, but it's not an "ocean view". I personally don't mind that, I think it's still very nice. read more

Service was impeccable. Cleaned off table, folded napkins when we left table. Cocktails were great! We had Burnt Orange Old Fashioned with a custom ice cub with an A on it! Wife had Holy Spritz I think. Also nice. Appetizer we have Wagyu Tatare and Octopus Escargot style. Great tasting. One complaint; too many chips for Wagyu and not even bread for Octopus. But still great. Dinner. Ordered the Duck and Lamb Loin. Also great. Dessert we received a special chocolate mousse for the occasion. I had espresso and Berries Pavlova. This is such a gorgeous spot. I came here with my partner just to have a nice weekend getaway without kids. This restaurant has been around since the 60s but they've managed to keep the ambiance up to date and very beautiful. Our server was so fantastic, always on top of the table and ready to jump in to make every request possible. The food was really good too. We came here for brunch and I went with our server's recommendation of the classic omlette. It was tasty and just a standard omlette, but somehow tasted so much better. My partner ended up going with the Croque Madame at the server's recommendation. This dish was fabulous. I could have eaten the entire dish! It was filling but worth the carbs. Mr. A's has always been a top choice for me when out of town guests are visiting. The views are pretty great and it's a nicer upscale restaurants with true San Diego classy charm. This was my first time back since their remodel a couple years ago and found it to have the same ambiance. I went for dinner to celebrate a birthday and had a great table right at the window. They had just celebrated their 60th anniversary and had some nice stemware announcing that. The wait staff were all very cordial but feel that since my last visit, the service wasn't quite up to par especially for a fine dining restaurant. The extensive wine list is impressive and the food choices are made to fit every preference. As for me, I ordered the Alaskan Black cod that melted in your mouth and had the most perfectly crisp skin Accompanying the fish were two small shrimp, fennel, and potatoes. While I enjoyed it, maybe a few more shrimp would've been nice. For dessert, the mint ice cream baked Alaska can only be described as decadent. As a huge fan of mint chocolate and brownies this was a perfect dessert for me. Presentation was spot on too. A last comment would be that while they acknowledged the birthday at the beginning there was nothing special done. Perhaps a birthday candle in our dessert at the least would've been nice. A dear friend indulged us with a birthday treat at this premiere San Diego restaurant. We arrived early for our Brunch reservation. That enabled us to explore the interior and exterior of Mr A's at our leisure. Staff was very accommodating as we took photos, etc. The jazz band had already set up and were entertaining . The music was sultry and smooth - loud enough to tickle the senses but low enough for pleasant conversations with our friends. Wonderful staff. Loved the attentiveness, willingness to point out menu items that were popular among guests as well as themselves. We made most of our selection based on our server's enthusiastic endorsements of particular items. We made great selections based on their recommendations. I'm pretty sure it was the manager who also checked in on us, kept up with the status of our orders and, along with our server, insured that each item met our specific dietary requests. Beautiful service. Beautiful views of San Diego from every vantage point. High end dining at its finest. Those pastries were exquisite, buttery, melt in your mouth heaven. One of specials of the day was dirty rice with kale, duck, etc. After the wonderfully vivid description of this menu item, I had to try it - my way. The views are beautiful! It's on 5th near balboa park a top floor with a rooftop patio. The interior design felt luxury and set a nice ambiance. Ambiance: Classy, elegant, formal. 10/10 views of the San Diego skyline and the airport - you can even see the runway! People love to sit on the patio and watch planes. They have a dress code but they emphasize it multiple times on their website and if you make a reservation, so it's hard to miss. Great if you're looking for a romantic, dimly lit, elevated atmosphere. If you're the kind of person who loves your flip-flops and is turned off by formal restaurants with stuffy pretentious atmospheres though, this place is not for you. Food: This is definitely the kind of place where you're paying for the ambiance/views as opposed to the food itself. Pretty standard fancy restaurant kind of menu and prices. Of everything we ordered, the tuna crudo was probably my favorite - nice unique bite-sized burst of flavor and super fresh. We weren't the biggest fans of the duck breast entree and would rather have our good ol' Peking duck instead. Salmon wellington was solid but not super memorable. They have rotating flavors for the baked Alaska by season, we got the apple pie but I thought it was a bit too sweet! Overall still worth it to come here overall for the lovely ambiance and views. Food: 12oz Ribeye was honestly the best steak I've had in a long time. I'm not the type to exaggerate, but it was textbook medium-rare, seasoned humbly so as to let the meat do the heavy lifting on the taste (as it should be), and very filling. The Carbonara Mac & Cheese was amazing, to the point that it fill you up very quickly. The Crispy Brussel Sprouts were my favorite side; excellent crunch but not too dry either. Both sides are pretty big, so plan to share sides (there were 3 of us sharing the 2, and we still couldn't finish them). The Old-Fashioned and Espresso Mask were both solid choices. Service: Kristin was outstanding and very professional. She juggled a busy night, but kept her poise the entire time, checking on us regularly but not too often either. She gave us very helpful and honest advice (especially about portion sizes regarding the sides). My table's unanimous compliments to Kristin! Dress Code/Conduct: Business Casual is enforced. People have gotten denied entry, even with a reservation, so definitely don't show up in flip-flops/tanktops/other casual wear. They will email you a reminder about this. Don't be the table that's too loud or belligerent. Stay classy, or you will get kicked out (we watched a lady that had one too many get asked to leave politely (rightfully so)). Vibe: Views are absolutely incredible, especially at night. Christmas decor really set the holiday mood despite an odd 80 degrees in December. Definitely coming back here. People like to complain about the cost of going here, but don't understand you're paying a premium for the experience, which in my opinion is well worth it. Booked a dinner on the patio 30 minutes before sunset and the view was amazing. Even better was our server, Ty, who I'd highly recommend people request as he made our dining experience 10x better. Really personable guy, gave great food recommendations, and went above and beyond to make our first experience worth it. The food itself was solid. Again, it's pricey, but tbh with how much other more upscale places that have been recently opening up in SD have been charging, I actually don't think the prices are that absurd. The food itself was solid. We ordered the octopus "escargot style" and pork belly appetizers, the short rib and duck breast entrees, the mac and cheese side, and the honey cake and strawberry shortcake baked alaska for dessert. Of what we ordered, I'd order the octopus, honey cake and mac and cheese again. The mac and cheese especially was insane, I'd highly recommend it. Lastly, parking was easy to find on a Saturday evening. We parked in one of the many paid parking/metered spots in the area. They also offer valet parking for $20. The entrance for this place was a bit tough for us to find at first. The easiest way (imo) would be to follow the signs for the valet parking garage (entrance on fourth ave) and take the elevator from there up to the 12th floor. read more

I ordered the Holy Spritz as my drink it was bright and delicious I would order it again. The dark chocolate mouse with raspberry stole the show! I will go back for that easily. Another lovely experience at Mister A's on the seat-yourself portion of the patio! There's a few couches to lounge on and have cocktails with a short list of snacks to eat out there. Big recommendation for reservations: Patio reservations are usually BOOKED out far in advance (makes sense, it's gorgeous out there any time of day), so even if you write in the notes to request the patio, you will be seated inside. Ensure that it is an option on the list when you book! I had dinner with a friend last weekend. We ordered the caviar tator tots and braised octopus carpaccio appetizers to share. He ordered the braised short ribs and I had the halibut. We also ordered a bread basket. The caviar tater tots were good, as expected. You can't really go wrong with tater tots and caviar... We were both really impressed with the braised octopus carpaccio. We've both had octopus prepared many different ways, but this was the first time that either of us had it served like this. It was a really amazing dish. I had a bite of his short ribs and thought it was just OK. It tasted very heavy to me. My halibut entrée was very rich as well. I don't know if it was cooked with butter, but I tasted butter. It was missing a grilled lemon wedge or some kind of citrus to lighten/brighten the dish. For dessert, we shared the Yuzu opera cake. We both agreed the dinner was decent, but the dessert fell short. It was overly sweet and there was barely any matcha, yuzu, or black sesame flavor. All I tasted was sugar and the thick sweet icing. For a high end restaurant, I was rather disappointed that my water glass was not refilled. Our wine glasses were refilled but the water glasses were not. Overall, I had higher expectations and was somewhat disappointed. I had met the manager at the Best of San Diego Magazine Party at Liberty Station a few days prior. He took down my name and reservation information, and said to expect a fabulous experience. My experience wasn't fabulous and nothing stood out, except for the octopus appetizer.
