The worst dinner I've had in San Diego. Actually, the only time I've ever been disappointed in a nicer restaurant we've gone to in the city. So much so that when asked where I recommend or where we've eaten lately that I liked, I will probably always add the caveat to avoid Cowboy Star. Old Fashioned- on the disappointing side of standard. Steak tartare- edible, but as someone who typically orders it every time I see it, this was the worst I've had. French Onion Soup- we each took four bites and were done (it's one of our favorite soups, and neither one of us wanted more). Bread Service- the butter was great, the rolls were cafeteria style, but for the butter alone, I would reorder this. Scallops and Risotto- worst item of the night, I took two bites and couldn't stomach more than that. The risotto was over salted and crunchy, the scallops were tough. Ribeye- Insane, so good! The only saving grace of the meal. Bone Marrow-gross Mac and Cheese- fine All in all, pretty disappointing meal. I will say the service was excellent. I normally would chalk it up to a bad night, but after one Reddit search, I found so many reviews like mine. I'm not sure if it's gone downhill or if bad reviews are getting wiped somehow? But the consensus on Reddit seems to be that Cowboy Star was a huge disappointment, despite the glowing Yelp reviews. On this visit, I was excited to come back to Cowboy Star as its been years since my last visit. They definitely made some really good changes with increased seating a more intimate dining area. The night started of course with bread - buttery, soft and so fresh its melts in your mouth. Second on deck was the wedge salad which had one of the fattest piece of pork belly and it was so good that I could eat a whole portion. With my main I went with the 18oz Dry-Aged T-Bone cooked medium rare from Snake River Farms. I didn't know much about Snake River Farms but from what I am told that their beef is top notch and sure enough, it was one of the best steaks I've had as it texture and taste was outstanding. For sides - always have to get the creamed spinach which was great and always a nice side to compliment the meat. We ordered the Mac and Cheese as well and that was excellent as well. One of the great things that sets Cowboy Star apart from the rest is the complete dining experience. A friendly staff from the front of the house to the back of the house, service was excellent. So much cow! We ordered the 40oz porterhouse for two, and I think it should really be advertised for four. We stuffed ourselves and still ended up taking the bone and one piece home. Everything we ordered was flavorful and well prepared. My dry aged ribeye was cooked perfectly, but it lacked a bit of flavor, and the chimichurri could have used a touch more salt. One thing worth mentioning is that you have to pay for the bread, but once you taste it, you understand why. It's seriously delicious and absolutely worth it. The only real disappointment was that we were celebrating a birthday, and unlike most high end restaurants, there was no complimentary dessert. We were charged for it instead for the Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding which was delicious. It's not a dealbreaker, but a small gesture like that goes a long way. The ambiance was lovely, a modern rustic decor with mood lighting on the restaurant side. The booths were nice and tall so they actually buffered the noise in the room well. Jodi was our server and she did everything we'd hope for, including keeping our wine bottle poured. I was a bit confused though as to the flow of the menu, the Cold Summer Corn Soup seems out of place when the Amuse Bouche and other menu items are Fall-inspired. We would have preferred a classic French Onion Soup to pair with our Porterhouse. Also, they took the bleu cheese crumble off the menu. Otherwise, we shared a Wedge salad, a tasting of the Ohmi Wagyu, and a Porterhouse steak. A tomahawk would also be a nice addition to the menu. No complaints whatsoever on the main dishes. However, they claimed the Wagyu was a 12 on the BMS (the highest and most marbled), we would say it was maybe an 8. - The higher the number the more buttery it is going to taste back the fats will sear the meat by itself without the help of additional butter in the pan. Which they said they normally add butter, salt and pepper... we declined the butter and pepper because it should not be needed. Also, a 12 wouldn't have the thicker fat vein running through it (see photo). We would not get the Wagyu here again. read more

Service was also on the slower side--it took quite a while for our entrées to arrive, which was a bit disappointing. On the food side, the steak was very good--cooked well and full of flavor. The mashed potatoes that came with it, however, fell short; they tasted a bit like they were from a box, which was surprising for a place of this caliber. The rolls were actually quite good, but the drinks were just okay and didn't really stand out. Glazed carrots provided a sweet balance to the salt/savory Brussels. Both were great. Mom ordered the poached halibut which came with a risotto, charred snap peas, and a champagne foam. Great presentation. She said she enjoyed it. My brother and I ordered the 21 day aged 14 oz ribeye cooked medium. Both came out at the correct doneness. Do I want to say it is the best steak I have ever had? No. Not the worst for sure but it didn't make me want to say I will forever forsake the competition either. The steak was cooked perfectly and the portion was more than enough for two of us. The mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious and the broccolini was good too. We also ordered the bone marrow for a side. It was pretty good but looking back on our meal, we would have been okay without it. For dessert we got the chocolate chip bread pudding. It was decadent but not too sweet, I would definitely recommend it. They also brought it out with a candle and birthday message, which was nice. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Stopped in last night as a party of four on a rainy December 27 evening and I am happy to report that we all had a wonderful meal. Half of us have been here quite a few times and the other half it was their first time. Cowboy Star is unique to San Diego in that it is an elevated country themed steakhouse. Imagine something you would see in Austin Texas or somewhere along those lines and almost has a saloon feel to it. Inside is very dark and romantic, and not very large which really adds to the coziness of it. They don't have any dedicated parking or valet so it will be a pay lot or street parking, we were able to find a street spot a block away, so it wasn't too bad, luckily we had umbrellas. In the front of the restaurant is a large full bar with tons of wine and cocktail options. It's a great place to stop in just for a drink or if you're in the mood for dinner, the second half of the restaurant is filled with booths, tables, counter seating at the kitchen, and a large private room in the back. I love how dark and styled it is inside and it's really a sort of place that you want to spend many hours. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out pretty fast. They have a fairly large menu so there are a lot of great options on it, but their specialty is steak and cocktails. I started off with the Steak Tartare and really enjoyed it. It had some very hearty flavors and the portion size was nice, it was not too large or too small. We also ordered the Bone Marrow, which wasn't as good as I usually get. This version was a bit too buttery, but it still had some nice flavors, I would just go easy on the butter in the future. For my entrée, I chose the 8oz Filet Mignon with a side of Peppercorn Sauce and honestly really liked it. The steak was cooked perfectly, seasoned well, and I really appreciated the side of broccolini and mashed potatoes. After all this, we were too full for dessert, but they had a lot of great options on the menu, if I had some more room in my stomach, I would've got the Bread Pudding. Overall, I would say this is in one of the top 3 best steakhouses in San Diego. Steak 48 is still king, but this is a wonderful option and would be fabulous for a date, dinner with friends, or a work function. They even split the mashed potatoes and broccolini into separate plates for us which was nice. The table ordered every side except two. Their Mac and cheese was delicious, as were the carrots and mushrooms. We also ordered four desserts and every single one was good. The banana pudding was a favorite. Hey, this place is pretty good! We were able to score seats at the bar which was pretty busy on a random Wednesday. I had the scallops and clams, while the hubby had ribeye. Both were delicious! We were told we had to get the mac and cheese which ended up being super yummy! And for dessert we opted for the chocolate chip bread pudding which was an excellent choice! The ambiance was chill, not over the top cowboy themed. Good find for sure! All in all a lovely dinner! read more

Last Friday night I had the opportunity to eat at Cowboy Star. Everything from the food to the service was nothing short of amazing! If you eat at Cowboy Star, do not skip the bread! It was extremely soft, fluffy and flavorful! The whipped butter went perfectly with the bread as well! We ordered two new york steaks which were cooked and seasoned perfectly. They serve 21 day dry aged steaks and were extremely tender, without the funky flavor of over dry aged steaks. One thing that was refreshing is the steaks came with mashed potatoes and broccoli, instead of being required to purchase the sides separately. We did however order the mac and cheese side which might be the best mac and cheese i've ever had! I will absolutely return to Cowboy Star the next time I am in San Diego! read more
