This time around I got the pork cutlet curry bowl. You got a bed of soft rice, some well fried pork, a layer of Japanese curry, and a little bit of their pickled radishes. The pork was juicy and crispy even though it was soaked in that Japanese curry! The dish came with quite a bit of rice, but it was a little too easy to finish with their curry. A local go-to lunch spot in the ever busy Mitsuwa food court. Originally came for ramen but forgot I never carry cash. Good thing Misasa accepts cards! Inside: It's your standard Mitsuwa supermarket. You can either go through the main entrance in the plaza passing by different aisles and little stores or through the back that connects directly to the food court. It's obviously not an embellished location - essentially a cafeteria. But if you've been to Japan, it's a bit endearing and homey in my opinion. Misasa is the last station, in the far corner, with a large sign above. Next to the register is a glass case with fake food as a visual menu for everyone. To the right is a water station and sides/condiments. Food: I've had their currys, bento boxes, and bowls. But since it's been awhile I'll comment on what I ate for this review - their Pork Cutlet Bowl and Small Udon (around $11). Twas a cold day so the udon warmed me up pretty well. The noodles were a bit too soggy, may have been in the soup for awhile, but good nonetheless. For the PCB, the rice was cooked and flavored just right - firm, with the right amount of water. The pork cutlet was tender and moist, with a decent flake. The food overall was filling but not heavy. Overall: If you're expecting fancy restaurant quality cuisine, you've come to the wrong place. This is a Japanese based food court (and honestly better than most, if not all American food courts) and it's not here to thrill you, but to feed you and allow you to be on your way. Even before the Irvine Mitsuwa locatin opened we would go to Costa Mesa. For less than $9 you get a chicken or pork cutlet, a decent serving of rice and curry and a small side salad. PRICE: $6-$10 per entree. They may be a little cheaper than other curry houses like Coco Ichibanya. SERVICE: You basically order, wait for them to call your number, and find a seat to enjoy your meal. After you're done, return your empty bowls and tray to the designated area. As you can see from the picture, it was good quality lean white meat with a very thin breading. The curry was a Japanese style curry which was mild and sweet. The may not suit everybody's taste. If you are looking for a spicy Indian or Thai style curry, then this is not for you. I can't eat foods that are too hot or too spicy so this is my perfect cup of tea. My only slight complaint is that the picture showed a lot of potatoes in the curry (which I love!) but the dish did not have even one bite of potatoes in it. The rice was authentic Japanese which was slightly sticky and moist. It was good! Portion was also very generous. I was having a late lunch and was starving, and this dish filled me up. In fact, I could barely finish all the rice. Price tag? $6.75. This is super value for a meal that was so delicious and the portion was so big. I've had tonkatsu dishes from many full service Japanese restaurants that cost $10+ that were not nearly half as good. It was amazing how good the pork cutlet was.
