We had seen this place earlier and were not impressed by their cookie-cutter set of specialty cocktails (which we have seen around town already), but after reading the reviews decided to give it a shot. What a disaster.
First, while I applaud the use of face masks to keep germs to yourself, if my bartender is not feeling well he shouldn't be behind the bar! That said, he should at least know how to bartend!
All we were looking for was a couple of simple martinis. They have "dry martini" on the bleeding menu! After specifying one vodka and one gin, the guy had to get out his folder to consult and then, with coaching from what I assume was the manager, put two martini glasses in the fridge. For god's sake, they had wine glasses in there (unnecessary) and five minutes in the fridge is not going to chill the glass! The martinis were about 3:1 (maybe 2:1) vodka/gin:vermouth. this would have been OK if they were using really good vermouth, but it was not a good brand and maybe it had been sitting out oxidizing for too long. They did have some tiny olives and put one in each glass. Stirred, not shaken (which is OK with me). They were awful. We did not finish them and moved on. I should point out that they were going to use well spirits, something not recognized. A martini is almost pure spirits. The quality of the spirits is absolutely essential. Fortunately we were sitting at the bar and were able to stop him and get him to use a reasonable brand.
As the other reviews indicate, they put out a cup of small roasted peanuts in the shell. One of us is allergic to peanuts so we did not touch them. When the bill came it was pretty funny, showing that they were going to charge us for both "Men's nuts" and "Woman's nuts" - 10HKD each. Seriously? Without even mentioning it up front. Sleazy, but the bill showed that the 20HKD were also deducted from the total. No harm done but not impressive.
I can also point out that the Nest Bar in the Prudential Hotel around the corner, while not dark and cozy, is very nice and they do know how to make a martini! And their cup of nuts or chips is free.
I'd love to love this place. It has potential. But I'd rather drink in my room. read more
