All they mentioned was French inspired or French fusion, and knowing I haven't been to many of those my wife and I went here without looking at the menu. Looking at the menu, I'll tell you that it was not what I expected so much so that I forgot to take pictures of it because I spent all my time trying to decide what I wanted. I think not looking anything up was probably the best decision I could've made because that led to us choosing some dishes that I think we normally wouldn't have ordered. We tried to steam cheeseburgers, the steak, tartar, garlic, fries, foie gras dumplings, and gnocchi. Also got some specialty drinks. Service was amazing, if I was really nice, did not take too much time at all to get food, and the food itself was special. (Specials is the best word I can use to describe discovering new flavors, my age ) Two thumbs up, will be coming back again, and excited to try everything on the menu! Also, note that they do have some parking in the front of the building so if you're going for lunch, try there first instead of worrying about parking blocks away.

The food is excellent and the drinks are unique (in a good way). And the 'feel' is uniquely excellent. Our second time there, but it's clearly a 'go to' spot for us.

If you only hit one craft cocktail bar on your visit to Portland, make it this one…read more Wax Social is a speakeasy and vinyl listening lounge tucked inside a Best Western in the West Hills.. and I mean that in the best way possible. Super moody lighting, hundreds of framed musician photos covering every wall, warm comfortable seating, and a custom hi-fi sound system that will rearrange your expectations for what a speakeasy bar and listening lounge can be. It's a hidden gem in the most literal sense: no signage on the outside and nothing to tip you off as you enter the building. To find Wax Social you walk through the hotel lobby at 9900 SW Canyon Rd, up a staircase left of the registration desk, and look around until you find a frosted glass door marked "Listening Lounge." Open it. You'll be glad you did. Start with the cocktails. The menu is split between elevated timeless classics and original house creations, and both sections of this cocktail menu can bang. The King of Pain is rum-forward and finished with an orange coconut foam that looks as good as it tastes. The Watermelon Man showcases Japanese gin and elderflower in a refreshing and complex profile that's hard not to love. The Sweetest Taboo is a mezcal drink built around blue maize, red bell pepper, pineapple, and lime that hits that rare combination of bold and perfectly balanced. Light My Fire brings blanco tequila and Ancho Reyes together with habanero bitters for real depth. If you want to wander off-menu, they can handle that flawlessly too. Over several visits I've enjoyed a Paper Plane, Tommy's Margarita, Gimlet, Last Word, Too Soon, and others, all executed perfectly. On one visit, the guy next to me at the bar was visiting Portland from Sweden and ordered a Flip. I've been to a lot of craft cocktail bars and never heard someone order one. Clayton, one of the bartenders, didn't blink. Went right to work making a luxurious Flip from memory that the customer couldn't stop raving about. I was impressed. Clayton is also working on several rum-forward cocktails coming to the menu later this summer - I love rum drinks enough to say that sitting at the bar talking shop and the concepts he's tinkering with is worth a visit on its own. Full mocktail lineup, plus wine, bubbles, and craft beers. Now about the sound system. DJs spin all-vinyl sets of funk, soul, R&B, and deep cuts across decades on a custom hi-fi setup that sounds absolutely incredible. Even when the DJ is in full flow and the music is turned up, you can still hold an easy conversation with a group of six or eight people. I've been there with a large group in the back corner on couches and comfortable chairs and everyone kept commenting on it. The music is present and powerful and somehow never swallows the laughter and conversation happening around you. They clearly built this bar around the music. The food is a genuine surprise for a craft cocktail lounge. Think small plates/tapas in terms of dining style: you come for the drinks and next thing you know you've ordered half the menu, made a dinner of it, and somehow backed into a beautiful evening of food, drink, and music. Must-orders: ahi poke nachos, deviled eggs, braised pork gnocchi. Don't overlook the shaved asparagus and white bean salad with sherry vinaigrette, Manchego, and crispy shallots. Simple and elegant and every bit as good as the more indulgent plates. Steak bites and shrimp are worth ordering too. Bring friends so you can order more and share. Owners Sean and Travis are present most nights, greeting you at the door and checking in at your table. That care shows in everything here, including a staff that knows how to read the room. A few things worth knowing: parking is easy, the location is simple to reach from Portland or Beaverton, and the bathrooms are spotless. Open late on weekends. Whether you're planning a romantic date night in Portland, a special occasion, a group night out, or just a solo evening at the bar with someone who really knows cocktails, this is your spot. Among the best craft cocktail and listening lounge experiences in the greater Portland metro area. You've gotta check it out.

I had been wanting to try Mingo's for some time as several prominent reviewers had suggested the restaurant was held in high regard. I was little surprised when I saw the 3.6 rating on Yelp, but that is probably fair. The review history shows mixed results going back 10+ years. My experience is not going to help their ratings. Let's start with the big positives. I opted for takeout and provided a future time for pickup. I arrived slightly early and they were just packing things up. That is as good as one can ask for. Few restaurants can do that. Whoever cooked the calamari knew what they were doing. Every piece was soft, and fry was executed flawlessly. There was plenty of calamari, so the $18 price seemed reasonable. Unfortunately, the person that packed the calamari did not know to provide some ventilation to prevent the outer coating from steaming. The sauce was decent, but not remarkable. When you use a term like Calabrese to describe a sauce, it sets the expectation that the sauce is spicy and robust. Not the case here. It lacked bold flavor. The $16 Mingo Insalata was a bit of a joke - on me. It was exactly what it said it was on the menu, but there is just no way this should have been $16. The ingredients simply do not justify it. The salad consists of some romaine hearts - something on the order of one head of a multi-pack of prepackaged and prewashed lettuce heads you might find at Costco. For you and me, that is about $1. Restaurants pay less than retail. There were maybe 15 croutons, a sprinkling of pecorino cheese and reasonable amount salad dressing. It is hard to imagine there was $1 amongst the 3, but let's say it is $2 to be safe. Generally speaking, restaurant pricing is around 3x of food costs so a reasonable price would be around $9. That would make it make a lot more sense relative to the Calamari. The salad itself was ok. The lettuce was very fresh, but there was something bitter tasting and off putting in the croutons. Perhaps I should count my blessing that there were not that many of them? My main course was Pesce. Market price turned out to be $32. It is probably a little overpriced given the portion, but not egregious. I would have been perfectly fine with the price had this been fantastic. The meal was described as pan-seared NW seasonal fish & crispy polenta; fried caper, black olive and cherry tomato salsa. Again, the person that cooked the fish displayed their skill and I think the polenta was probably initially cooked quite well. The recipe, however, leaves a lot to be desired. It was surprisingly devoid of flavor/seasoning. It did not help that they chose an oily fish and rested it on the polenta. Whatever fry they got on the polenta was obliterated by the oil from the fish. The salsa also succumbed to the fish oil. It did not help that there were so few capers. While I did not eat in, I could see the restaurant and the atmosphere seemed on par for what you would expect for the type of restaurant Mingo seems to be aiming for. Things seem to be organized and running smoothly. This weird thing here is that the cooks can cook. Many of individual elements were executed quite well. It just did not translate to flavors that excite the palette or any kind of sense of value. It seems like they are a chef and/or manager away from making this place to talk of the town. But they have been in business for a while so maybe they are happy with what they have. I just do not see any reason to return. read more

Wow! shame on these people, service was so bad, mold in my water glass and in the carafe and rotten olives in my mediocre charcuterie board, it basically had Kraft singles, but I guess that doesn't matter if you are serving dirty water. Tried to give this place another chance since the last time I came here they "ran out" of everything! (At 6pm???) Get a clue and stock/prepare appropriately - Mingo is always out of everything. This time I went for my birthday dinner which I had a reservation and they still managed to drop the ball. This place is full of racists, entitled, white privileged, discriminating and beyond RUDE staff. Our waitress Georgia was completely incompetent and I felt she only came out to tell us the things they were out of, which seemed to be everything... I ordered a bottle of wine and she comes back 10 min later to tell me she forgot what bottle I ordered, then she comes back again and tells me that someone just ordered the last bottle of what I had ordered, only like minutes before, wtf (so basically if you were doing your job and paying attention I would have had the bottle I ordered! . I asked for a manager and another incompetent fool, Annette who is a complete Racist shows up and claims to be the owner at first, then she said the owner was off today... she didn't do anything to help with the terrible service or situation and still has the nerve to say in an obviously rude and condescending tone "I hope you have a better day" I asked someone inside if there is a real manager and they said the general manager was off today. So after seeking out 3 people I Still get no resolution to anything finally they sent out another incompetent manager named John who seemed like he was high as a kite and he didn't know what was going on. If I was the owner of this place I would make sure not to hire these racist individuals . I had high hopes because their pizza is delicious but my last visit there was truly disgusting. I was served a chianti braised mystery meat sauce over pasta that smelled exactly like my dog's canned dogfood. I politely explained that the meat was "off" and would they take it back. They nodded but then brought it back to the table in a box when they handed us the bill. The spoiled mystery meat was also still on the bill. The entire staff stared at us as we left. Needless to say, I felt so uncomfortable there that I did pay for the weird, smelly pseudo-meat pasta just to get out of there quickly. I will never, ever go back. Lovely atmosphere, delicious food full of subtle flavors which are a treat for the senses. Can't get enough of Italian restaurants like this. The employees are on hand when you need them, they don't interrupt your conversation every five minutes like they do a chains, and they back-up their recommendations with an articulate explanation instead of saying 'this is my favorite', or 'this dish is awesome'. Really good Italian restaurants are not easy to find. I've eaten in Italian restaurants on three continents, and this is easily among the best of them. The menu and the flavors are very authentic, the service is excellent (polite, professional and refreshingly low-key) and the atmosphere is is a delight. The garlic wasn't overpowering and went well with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Both of us got salads - I had the arugula almond and my friend had the pear goat cheese. I paired the salad with the tomato focaccia and my friend had the lobster ravioli. The focaccia had a generous portion of tomatoes and paired nicely with the mozzarella and balsamic drizzle. It was nicely seasoned and not greasy. The lobster ravioli was tasty though the cream sauce was a little on the heavy side. We took the ravioli and focaccia back to our hotel. Service was friendly and our food arrived quickly. Restaurant wasn't crowded and we were seated right away. I just moved to Hillsboro for grad school and look forward to returning!

Salami Mammi is a delicious and welcome addition to the area. We've had a chance to try basically…read morethe full menu at this point and there's not a low spot in sight (which is the reason for the 5 star review). I'll keep this one somewhat short and just say, go give Salami Mammi a try ASAP. Order whatever sounds best at the moment and you'll almost certainly be glad you did (but DEFINITELY consider getting an order of fries). It's a very small space so seating can be a challenge, but the staff are incredibly patient, friendly, helpful, and welcoming, so it feels approachable even when there's a crowd (which is pretty much always). Go a bit early if you can because selling out of things is not uncommon. Personally I would HIGHLY recommend the Fra Diavolo style for most (all) of the sandwiches. The peppers are SO good... There are plenty of pics around and the menu is as diminutive at the space so I won't gild the lily, and will simply say again it's awesome and worth giving a try!

Don Salamone promised us a sandwich shop years ago, before the pandemic turned everything upside…read moredown, took his original site (which is now on its second restaurant) off the table, and made a reservation-only high-end supper club a better option. In 2026, he's finally made good on the original premise. In the former home of the fiscally swanky but appropriately homey Don's Favorite Foods (where I paid more for braciole than I ever have in my life), the man has built us the house of parms he'd envisioned when Burger Stevens did its Stevens Italiano pop-ups many, many years ago. With touches of Rochester, N.Y., sprinkled throughout the menu, Don has packed in the three holy parms (chicken sausage, sausage, eggplant) and threw in a low-country curve (shrimp) for good measure. In a move that made my eyes well up a bit, he has a chicken cutlet with lettuce, caesar dressing and grana padano (less fussy parmesan). The cold cut sandwich isn't some rote italian combo of ham, provolone and a cured meat to be named later, but a pile of Mortadella, capicola, genoa salami, pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, lettuce and tomato... all doused in oil and vinegar. Note the lack of mayonnaise. I've been so beaten down by the sandwich options west of the tunnels that I'm genuinely surprised when I see the little details executed well. I was wondering what they were going to do for bread with Dos Hermanos already offering their own sandwiches down the street, and Good Dough on 6th's sourdough baguettes are ranked right up there with Fleur de Lis and Little T for great Italian sandwich bread that's going to hold up to the marinara and oil and vinegar being thrown at it. As for the sides, the fries Italiano are kind to offer calabrian-chili ranch, but should take no dip. The garlic bread is perhaps the only loaf in this state that doesn't overbutter the entire affair and drown the whole thing in garlic cloves. If you're used to your local Freddy's bakery unloading its garlic and butter overstock onto your "garlic bread," this is going to disappoint. Dip a stick of Darigold into a jar of Chef Cuisine minced garlic, twist, and eat if that's what you're going for. I've already seen people scoff at the $4 side of "red sauce," and I'm here to tell you that's not overpricing: That's a penalty. If you're adding sauce to an already sauced item, you're just paying a premium for drowning out the intended balance with what, to you, is the appropriate amount of sauce. It's your right to ask, but it's also completely appropriate for this place to ding you for it. Meanwhile, I love that other choices are rewarded. $4 for peppers and onions on that sausage parm? Sure. Same price for throwing broccoli rabe onto that cutlet? Absolutely. We're finally getting a few places in town (Loyal Legion, June, the Broadway on a good day) that don't have to look up seemingly simple drinks like a Negroni or an Aperol Spritz, but it's nice to have a place in town that treats them like an adult cafe lunch option and not some feature of a premium cocktail list. I finally have my West Side Italian sandwich shop with no mayonnaise, minimal ranch dressing, and owners who genuinely love what they do. I'd say I wish Salami Mammi the best, but I'm going to invest heavily in that outcome. P.S. The "Sad Valley" reply to a guy who drove from Happy Valley is 1. Legitimately funny and 2. Authentically Northeast.
