Minerva has long been on my To Try list of local restaurants. Friends rave about it, and it is blocks from my home. So why has it taken me so long to actually roll into this nifty little gem? Well wow - I finally had the chance to try Minerva. And thank you to the owner and to Susha for making the experience such a great one!
From the street, the restaurant doesn't really stand out. It is one in a series of storefronts on a teeny strip, wedged between other small shops that offer everything from subs or donuts to hair and nails to liquor or banking. But the bright and large Minerva sign and Indian writing on advertisements and posters is clearly visible, and the first preview of the authenticity inside.
On entering - the pleasant smell of many appealing spices is in the air. Not overwhelming, but intriguing, and tempting the taste buds. The walls have colorful Indian culture art, photos of dignitaries who have visited (including the prime minister of India), and a very large flat screen tv where Indian films and more are shown. While the place isn't huge, it is much larger than it looks from the outside, and well organized with room for my wheelchair to easily pass by tables and chairs and booths to access our seating for 12 at the one of one area. And while the place was filled on the Friday night we were there (as soon as a table emptied, it was cleaned and re-seated with new patrons) , I noticed that even though the customers were quite diverse in age and nationality, there were many many Indian families smiling and chatting as they shared a meal there - which to me is a sign of the authenticity and quality of the food.
Simply stated - EVERYTHING was great, and there was SOMETHING for EVERYONE! If you like spicy - they have it. If you like sweet - they have it. If you like savory, or mild, or veggie, or meaty, or crunchy, or soft, or whatever - they have it, AND, it tastes great! I ordered a meal, but shared with others, so I had the opportunity to taste so many wonderful new bites, and nothing disappointed.
Our drink orders came quickly, and the water glasses were always filled. And the servers were friendly and helpful and cheerful, and very attentive without being overbearing. While they do have a full bar and wine and beer options, they only had two "light beer" options - neither of which being ones I enjoy, but that was really the only thing which was even a bit of a challenge (which really, isn't a challenge - I ordered a regular beer that I did like, and went on with my meal!).
The samosa appetizers were crispy and well-seasoned and large, and came with green spicy and a brown sweet sauce options (I mixed them - and loved it). We also had other apps - rolls and crisps and other fare with spinach or meat or potatoes or veggies inside. Each tasted different, and each was delicious.
For my main course, I ordered the cauliflower and potato entree. I don't remember the Indian name for it, but I will always remember the taste and the plating - because I will definitely be ordering it again! In the center of the plate was a large bowl filled with a wonderfully-seasoned and well-portioned mix of this goodness, accompanied by several pieces of warm and light naan. The bowl was ringed by small cups - some with different sauces ranging from yogurt-based to saffron to lentil and from spicy to sweet options. One small bowl offered rice, another a bit of a tasty soup, and yet another a sample of the dessert (oh wow - pineapple chunks in a smooth and just-sweet-enough mango sauce!). Honestly - every single piece of food - each with a different combo of sauce, or tried with rice one forkful, or on a piece of naan for the next mouthful - was great. I also enjoyed tasting a nibble of other entrees - including a beautifully spiced shrimp and noodle meal, and a light and creamy spinach and shrimp meal - both uniquely different, and both delicious.
I enjoyed every bite of my food - whether I ate it there, or traded a bite for a taste of someone else's fare, or enjoyed it as leftovers the next day at home (yes - I brought home a towering bag of delights from the bountiful apps and entree portions). Everyone un our group enjoyed their food (and sharing back and forth across and around the table). And everyone went home happy, and full, and filled with good memories from great conversation during our gathering (which is not always possible in a busy Friday-night restaurant, but at Minerva, the noise level was a great balance of "filled with folks" but "still able to chat across the table").
The price was fair for the fare (hahaha). The place was clean. And fresh spice for digestion and flavor is at the door for a final taste of Indian culture when leaving. And while I wonder how I didn't try this place sooner, I knew that I will be back - and yes, sooner rather than later. Highly recommend! read more
