Paneer Makhani thick and creamy. Perfectly balanced flavor.
Jacob H.

Woodlands excels at all dishes-- it's hard to imagine tastier and more authentic Indian food, especially if you're going for harder to find South Indian dishes. The staff were friendly and brought the dishes promptly while meeting all requests. The decor is clean and modern, worthy of a business meeting or casual meal. Expect all curries to blow you away. The makhani paneer is a go-to for anyone, but also the saag paneer or Chana masala will impress. I can't wait to go back.

Dining here feels like stepping into a spice-scented palace. The dosas are crisp, the Manchurian bold, and the desserts unforgettable. Every dish is crafted with care, and the staff make you feel like royalty. I've been here a dozen times--it's consistently exceptional, easily Michelin-worthy. The best South Indian food in Maryland. Come hungry, leave enchanted.

Love this place! I don't live close by and find it worth the drive -- best service of any restaurant in the area, I'd say. Very attentive staff, beautiful, fun décor, lots of choices on the menu with everything being healthy, delicious, and digestible (Of course, healthy is always relative and luckily, I'm fortunate enough to be able to digest most things -- but nothing here has ever made me feel yucky! In fact, everything I've had has made me feel stupendous!) and moreover, I might add that it is in fact deeply nourishing. I love dosai (FYI, teeny-tiny tip: 'dosai' is the Tamil way of saying and writing 'dosa' which is more commonly used in other areas.) so just that makes me happy -- I need nothing else! (I once met a South Indian man who told me that before moving to the U.S., he used to eat dosai three times a day and I was so jealous! I just loved imagining it and living vicariously through him for a few moments, ha ha!) On this last visit, I ate the Special Rava Masala Dosai, Vegetable Soup, and drank the Mint Limeade -- perfect for summertime, soo good! -- and the chai. That was certainly more than enough! I couldn't just pass on dessert, though, so I got some to go (Have yet to try it.). Speaking of this not being my first visit to this place, I've actually been going to this place since it was in the College Park area and this is a whole lot nicer! What an improvement! What a relief! Much nicer area! Whew! Speaking of relief and nice -- everyone I've encountered here has been very, very nice. The level of caring is unsurpassed. It's also consistently high through the year and seasons .... The music played here is good, too. It's not overwhelming, not too loud, and is thankfully actually Indian (Bharati) music. Some restaurants are afraid to play 'ethnic' music, and I always appreciate it when the music matches the food -- to whatever degree. I get thrown when I go into a restaurant of a certain non-American place but the music played is American. That always throws me off and I end up over-focussing on it and thinking and talking about that fact the whole time, so I find it relieving when the food and music are a match. Thank God! Again, what a relief -- whew! Very relaxing .... There is one wooden carving hung on the wall that at least from afar -- which was my vantage point -- looked to me like a temple carving (as in the outside wall of a temple) and I found that and all the bright colours very beautiful. I find dull colours irritating, boring -- painfully so! So, while some might find bright colours jarring, I find them soothing. The décor of this place really suits my taste! I hope it suits yours and that even if it doesn't, you will give the décor and cuisine a try! Overall, I would say this place is highly recommended! A very full-on total yay! :-D

Palak Chaat

This spot is vegetarian but that's more of a benefit than anything. The restaurant is tastefully decorated. The portions are huge and flavors tasted like home. We started with the palak chaat and shared the crispy giant dosa and the channa bhatura. Highly recommend each of these! With regard to service, my water never went any lower than half full.

Keep in mind I am critical of Indian restaurants since I've had it all my life. Came here since many told me it's a legitimate Indian restaurant serving authentic food. Woodlands serves mostly South Indian food. Even though some North Indian dishes are available like Chana (chickpeas), it doesn't taste how it should be. So, I suggest getting South Indian dishes here. I got the Mysore Masala Dosa. I wanted it spicy, but the waitress kept telling me to get it regular. I found the regular to be not spicy enough. The dosa was nice and crispy. However, I wish the chutneys had more spices/flavor and less salt. The potato filling was very bland and it was all stuck together as if someone took frozen potatoes, heated it a little, and stuck it in the dosa. It was very hard and chunky in a bad way. I never encountered a dosa filling like that before. My friend got the Royal Thali. I tried bites of all the dishes on it. The dessert/kheer was terrible. I am used to it being thick and this was soupy and watery with not much cardamom flavor at all. Some of the vegetable dishes were decent, but most seemed forgettable. Their mango lassi was good, but honestly that is hard to mess up. The interior is aesthetically pleasing with nice Indian decor. Overall, I had very high expectations for this place. I thought this would've been the best dosa and South Indian food in the DMV. But, I've had better dosa and all at small local restaurants by me. I may be biased because I am used to North Indian flavors and just lots of flavor, but then again, I've had incredible more flavorful dosa, chutneys, and other South Indian dishes elsewhere in the area. Worth the hype? Not to me. And don't get me started on the samosa that was not how it should be.

Great selection of vegetarian Indian foods. I have been to their other locations, this one keeps the quality as well. They also serve alcoholic beverages unlike their other locations. Beautiful ambience, very cultural. Highly recommend if you want authentic Indian food with vegan/vegetarian/anti-inflammatory/no onion-garlic options.

Mysore Masala Dosai

A great 100% vegetarian Indian restaurant in Gaithersburg serving mostly South Indian fare (they also have Indo-Chinese and North Indian choices). I ordered the Poori Bahji. It was a giant fried puffy bread served with a spicy chickpea and potato stew. The bread came out hot and chewy, and still very light (and not oily). It was dipped in the stew, which was very spicy and flavorful (without being heavy). My companion had a mysore masala dosa. It was crispy and in a triangle shape. The inside of the dosa was coated in a very spicy sauce, and stuffed with potatoes and onions. Several savory and spicy chutneys came with it. Will recommend to anyone (don't need to be a vegetarian to enjoy)!

I met a friend for lunch here yesterday. It was my second time here but her first time. I love the options here especially the lunch specials which give you chance to try different things. She ordered a masala dosa; her first time trying this and I got the Curry lunch special because I LOVE chana masala. I complimented my meal with mango lassi which is always refreshing. This has quickly become a staple option as its not too far from work. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes.

Gracious service in a beautiful and relaxed setting...we had a delicious meal: vegetable samosas, vegetable biryani and an aloo mutter (potatoes and peas) curry, as well as mango lassi and Indian tea (chai). The serving sizes are generous and we took home the biryani to enjoy the next day. Parking was pretty easy, as it is in a fairly large shopping and office complex, near Quince Orchard and Clipper Mill Roads. I love this is a vegetarian restaurant and look forward ti trying more dishes...

Dahi Bhalla: large quantity. Comes with 2 big pieces.

The carrot/cabbage and greens were fresh and tasty. I probably wouldn't get the rice again. It was fine, but served mostly to fill me up rather than add flavor. Japanese Katsu Curry Bowl ($15.00) plus $1.00 for greens and $0.50 for extra curry sauce. My partner enjoyed this dish, but thought the curry flavor could have been stronger. Also, they probably wouldn't get the extra sauce again. Overall, good bowls. We'll be back. One disappointment is that there is no way to "build your own bowl." I asked the server, and she said you can ask to substitute an item on one of their main bowls, but there's no "create your own" option. Since you order from a kiosk, it seems that could be straightforward, with the price adjusted based on what you add in, but I guess not here. That will limit the number of times I come here, because I prefer the option for variety. Ordering vis kiosk also doesn't allow you to order the sauce "on the side," which is another unnecessary (IMHO) limitation.

I've tried a lot of things on the menu, and bottom line is I still think their Medley Loaf Combo Bowl is the best entree. I wish there was more loaf! It's so good and has a salty deep umami flavor which goes perfectly well with the shredded medley and other goodies in the bowl. However, there was a bit too much rice and carrot in my opinion this time. Still thought it was pretty good. I also ordered the Japanese Katsu Curry Bowl. I've gotten this one before too and thought it was really good, but today I found the curry a little bland, and again, the rice-to-protein ratio was way off (too much rice). Probably won't get this again and stick to the Medley Loaf Combo.

I came to find this place through a recommendation on Reddit and after looking at the many positives reviews on yelp and google, I just knew I had to come eat here. We came here on a Saturday at 3:30 pm and the inside was empty but more people came in later on. The interior had an older timely feel and was very spacious with many table around that could hold a big party if needed. For appetizer, we ordered the steam dumplings and for the entree we had the pineapple fried rice & the crispy orange chicken with broccoli. The dumpling came out fairly quickly and tasted good. Dip that dumpling into that sauce to elevate that flavor. The pineapple fried rice portion was decent and the taste was amazing. Season perfectly and you can see the chef cooking in the back through a small window, I see him using that wok technique to give my fried rice that " wok hay smoke flavor". For the crispy chicken it was cook nicely and come with a bowl of rice. Rice mix with the sauce and eaten with the chicken was tasty. The staff were very friendly and refilled our water when it was low, very attentive to our needs. All in all, had a positive experience here and would highly recommend anyone to come and try some amazing food here atleast once.

(Really, when I checked in on Swarm, it had been 13 years since my last visit. Now we're going every month or so.) While I noticed some updating--there's more wood paneling, and the menu is sleeker, for lack of a better word--the restaurant still has a warm, friendly vibe with sunflower imagery throughout. The menu is a twist on Asian food, with plenty of analogues, chunks of soy and/or wheat protein, and some vegetables. It's not all vegan--a few dishes have dairy and/or honey, and I suspect one of the noodle dishes uses egg noodles--but those items are clearly marked. We were last there on Thanksgiving and tried a few new things. The veggie kabob reminded me a bit of the kabob at the late, lamented Harmony Cafe in Georgetown. Sure, I'll get that again. I'm not so sure about the mushroom dish. I do love mushrooms, but perhaps this isn't the way to go about it. On prior visits, we've gone with old familiars. The fried "chicken" appetizer (chunks of soy protein and mushrooms fried and served with a spicy ketchup) are a classic. I am still trying to find my go-to entree. Maybe the Crispy Happiness (chunks of soy protein and shredded vegetables cooked mild)? It's a bit far from DC, but it is worth the trip.

It's a little pricey in my book, but I suppose not overly so compared to many restaurants in the area. My go-to is the Paneer Makhani. Other favorites in the family are the Vegetable Samosa, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Makhani, and Malai Kofta Curry. We also usually order some Garlic Naan as well. The only real catch in my personal experience is the parking situation. It is not located adjacent to any of the surface parking lots in Kentlands, so you will be walking a little bit from somewhere. I don't enjoy walking or driving in Kentlands because people seem to lose their minds driving in there for some reason, so you have to be on the look-out all the time. There is technically street parking right next to the restaurant, but it's hyper competitive, I wish there was a spot or two saved for curbside/pick-ups. I went to pick-up dinner a little after 7 yesterday (a Thursday night) and circled so many times, that it ended up being faster to park over by the Michaels and make the cold walk over. At one point a car was parked diagonally the wrong way in one of the spots, as in they swooped in to take it from the wrong side of the road. So you can imagine how much those spots are left purely up to chance. TLDR/ tasty food; good for carry-out if you are prepared to walk a little or can bring someone to hop out and grab the food.
