No frills. A solid, juicy beef patty and natural melty cheese. But sometimes, simplicity is to be applauded. And this is that. It's so good when you want a solid burger cooked medium that's not crappy fast food. The juices of the patty and cheese dance the ol' dance that you never get tired of. The onion rings are battered perfectly and, together, they make for a meal that takes you back to the first time you were awed by bun-beef-bun. The service is horrible...the waitresses at Millers are bar none the most sullen and crabby women with serious attitudes I have encountered in a restaurant. Meh. Greasy fried burger with hot white onion, pale watery tomato and white iceberg lettuce -- served in a cheap plastic basket on wax paper. Cheap fries. Decent enough beef but seriously, what's all the hype? Gave it three shots over the past five years, this last try was strike three. The best thing going for this joint is the ease with which you can get outa there after consuming their gut-fill. Sorry, not a fan. Boy, oh boy. Whatever that guy was smoking the day he went to Millers Bar and said it was the SEVENTH BEST BURGER IN AMERICA, i would like double of that. Honestly, Redcoat Tavern has a better burger than this place and it didn't even make the list! It even placed ahead of Louis' Lunch, the place that apparently came up with the burger! First off, the facade of the place is as bare as the walls of an insane asylum. I entered through the door confused since you end up right in front of a wall and the kitchen to your left. After making my way past the lean-to where the waitresses gathered, I sat down, looking around and gathering senses on the ambiance of the place. I will say the waitress was kind and friendly as she took our order. I got the cheeseburger, onion rings, and a Coke. The best part of the whole place, were the container of pickles sitting on the table. I love pickles. Once the burger came out on the wax paper, it looked great, to be honest and I thought it would live up to the lofty expectations. I took a bite expecting to be immersed in a juicy and flavorful hamburger, but after a few bites, I thought to myself, "This is it?" I was sorely disappointed by the lack juiciness and mundaneness of the burger. And the onion rings? They tasted like they were from the frozen food section of a grocery store. Maybe it was my fault for thinking so highly of this place. That it would sweep me off my feet, singing hallelujah but boy was I brought back down to earth! I know that this place is unpretentious with its burger not having anything on it except onion and pickle, but the meat sure as hell didn't impress me. I heard about Miller's from a friend who works in Dearborn and touted it as one of the best burgers I'd ever have. To start, this place is definitely no frills. They have no menus, no plates (burgers are served on wax paper), no bills (you tell the gentleman at the bar what you had after you're done) and nothing on the burger besides the meat and cheese (if you get a cheeseburger). The burger itself was pretty good, but not on par with places like Redcoat, Shake Shack, Green's or Five Guys. The patty is pretty big, and definitely juicy. The fries were crispy. It's a good place if you're looking for a quick burger at a casual place that's more than fast food but less than a full sit-down. Sorry folks I'm not drinking the kool-aid on this one. I'd go 5 stars for JUST the burger if I could, but alas the burger doesn't exist in a vacuum. I've been here a few times and OK OK I get it. It's a BAR - it supposed to be dark and a little dingy etc. It is however, clean and the staff is mostly friendly. I have NO problem with the decor or the atmosphere or even necessarily having to eat my burger on a piece of grease paper. Although there were 2 of us I will break down the cost for one. The total cost, excluding tip, for cheeseburger, onion rings and a 16 ounce can of coke was $11.80. With 15% tip that brings the total to $13.45. By the way, unless you are only going to eat a burger with no fries or no drink, the Yelp price category should be $$ NOT $. I'll admit the burger was cooked really well and tasted great, but the onion rings didn't taste house made, they tasted like frozen bagged rings, they were only okay and the canned coke served warm with an 8 oz glass with ice wasn't all that refreshing. I am a guy that focus on value and I can understand why the owners want to keep it simple and I think that's great, but I get the feeling that I sort of paid a premium for the pleasure of slightly-dingy bar surroundings, no silverware, no plates, no menus and a warm 16 oz canned soda. I don't find no plates charming at that price. If they used big pieces of brown paper to cover the tables like some crab places do, THAT might be charming, but I don't know WHAT'S been on that table top and that greased soaked piece of paper is frankly kind of gross. Perhaps the last straw was the fact that they refuse to pay the 2.7% charge (and I'm sure for their volume they would pay closer to 2%) for credit cards and possibly force the customer to pay a $3.50 ATM fee boosting the cost to $15.75. Frankly, that doesn't spell value in my book, that spells mercenary. I don't know this to be the case, however it is even conceivable that they get a piece of the ATM fee for placement in their bar. As a comparison, one of my other favorite award winning burger joints (in Royal Oak - named after a red article of clothing) charges a total cost for cheeseburger, onion rings and refill-able coke for $13.90 ($16 w/tip) and I get plates, silverware, house-made rings, and cold pop. Burger also seems a bit bigger and just as well cooked. Overall great burgers, decent food but poor value. If you are going to try to sell me the kitch and stand on ceremony and not use flatware nor menus nor dishes nor except credit cards nor offer cold fountain drinks (they didn't even bring water!!) and charge me $14 for the pleasure, then perhaps you should expect being called out for being a poor value when compared to your peers. read more

Always saw this place on GQ's list of burgers to try before you die. Never really had a reason to stop in Detroit metro area. Now with the GF being from Michigan (Upstate), and on a trip to visit the fam, why not stop and give it a try. A slice of Americana frozen in time. As local as you get. The outside is very plain with a big sign on the side that says MILLER'S with no windows. Does seem a little sketchy until you get inside. Then it is your typical bar with lots of old timers chattin it up with each other. The service is super friendly and welcoming. Even for a first timer, it felt like I have eaten there many times before. The menu is simple with choice of Cheeseburger, Hamburger, French Fries and Onion Rings. All served on wax paper. The beer is always cold and has classic American offerings like Miller High Life, etc. The GF enjoyed Miller Lite draft and I had Michelob Light in a bottle. We both had cheese burgers and split the fries and rings. The pickles on the tables in the rubbermaid containers were a little scary, but great while you wait. You figure, it's pickled, so it can't be that bad. The burger was grilled to perfect medium rare and perfectly fit on the bun. Didn't even need ketchup. You have got to be kidding me. The inexplicable phenomenon of the "Miller Burger" continues to elude me, after the 3rd time my friends dragged me here. The burger here is no more legendary than the peanuts at your local bar; to the uninitiated, the burger is an afterthought as a compliment to your beverage. There are no vegetables available for your burger, no variety of cheese choices, and nothing remarkable about the bread. Millers and I used to be bff's; my husband and I were weekly regulars. At one point I was convinced this was possibly the best hamburger I ever had. Flavorful meat, cooked perfectly, with a certain je ne sais quois. I think they started to coast on their reputation. OK, this was my second trip to Miller's so I figured it to be about time that I weigh in. Both times I've visited it's been packed so I'm thinking "good sign"! Lucky for us, we've never had to wait for a table (good timing!). The ambience is pretty much downriver bar & grill. Long, narrow, packed tight. Nothing spectacular. The staff seem to have mostly all been there for a while, and are nice enough. I think the lack of ever being given a menu is a bit daunting, especially for those who don't have their sights already set on a burger (I know...but it happens!). On each visit I ordered a cheeseburger, medium rare. Once fries, once onion rings, and this time I was talked into trying the baked beans as well. If you order a soda, it's coming in a can with a tiny little glass of ice. Charming? No, not really.... I'll start from the bottom and work my way up. The fries are shoestring style cooked crispy. NOT my favorite type. There's nothing really more to say about frozen pre-cut fries. The onion rings also come in pre-battered and frozen. While freshly deep fried, they tasted "old", and had a heavy, over breaded consistency. Again, not a fan. The baked beans were surprisingly good, if not just a little too sweet. My understanding is that they make a small amount of beans each day and when they're gone, they're gone. We ended up getting the last of that days batch at our table. Now on to the burger itself, or should I say the "ground round"? The burger was cooked perfectly medium rare, which I give kudos for! The bun was nicely proportionate to the overall size of the burger. i ate mine "naked", not additional condiments or toppings. The cheese tasted like a good blend of mild cheddar, and was just the right meltiness. All in all, a pretty darned good greasy mess of a burger. "Greasy Mess" you ask, "how is that possible with ground round"? Good question. Personally I'd question this meat being dubbed with that particular grade. It was just WAY too juicy/greasy for a ground round blend of 90% Lean, 10 % Fat. I'm just not buying it. In any event the burger was good, but not legendary at all. The best cheeseburger Ive ever had. I will drive from Sterling Heights to Dearborn just for a Millers burger. I cant say that for any other burger. At this point it's only piling onto an already long list of 5 star reviews! But since I'm a burger lover and people always want to know whose burgers are best I thought I'd throw my name in the ring to support Miller's. I hadn't been to Miller's in almost a decade. I had a nearby appointment and decided to jump on the opportunity to retry their burgers (especially since I tout them as manna from heaven, I thought I should be current for integrity's sake). My appointment was over around 230 so I hoped that the lunch rush (which is SIGNIFICANT) would be over by then. I walked in to a half full bar (a few open tables and a few open seats at the bar). I sat and ordered a can of coke, fries and a cheeseburger. My order was ready in about 5 minutes. The burger came out on a sheet of wax paper and the fries in a small paper basket. If I'm being honest, the fries were warm but nothing to rave about. They were crispy and tender in the middle but they didn't really stand out. I'm thinking the onion rings would've been a better choice. The burger though, WHOA. The bun was soft and perfect (almost of brioche consistency), the burger was immensely juicy and really thick (1/2" or better), cooked as I requested and COVERED (I mean COVERED) in gooey, drippy American cheese. I'm guessing it's Velveeta but I didn't want to ask. I walked out for $12 including tip. Still one of my favorite burgers anywhere. Tips: Bring cash, don't come at lunch time, try the onion rings and come hungry! This burger is no-frills! I truly believe that that's the way it oughta be too. I finally made it to Miller's Bar and tried their hamburgers. I was born and raised in Dearborn and for some reason I never had a hamburger from Miller's until today. I ordered two cheese burgers. They came with raw onion on the side and there pickles on the table. The waitress brought out mustard and ketchup on the side. The burgers probably started out around 7 or 8 ounces before they hit the grill. I ordered mine medium-rare and it was cooked properly. Bottom line: Good burgers. While visiting my grandparents in Michigan for Thanksgiving holiday once my G-pa made a special point of taking me and my cousin here for hamburgers. This is a man whose culinary tastes range from liver and onions to donuts with butter on them (seriously), so I wasn't necessarily expecting much. Driving up, the place was identical to almost every other structure I saw in Dearborn: nondescript, worn around the edges, and made of concrete, but the parking lot was jam-packed with Fords and there was literally a line out the door. I was raised in California so the idea of standing outside a dive bar in Michigan in November for a burger seemed as desirable as waiting in line to get punched in the neck. It was kind of a long wait in a line that winds through the small, crowded bar which allows smoking. Indoors. I'll give you a moment to compose yourself...Coming from S.F. this was at first shocking to my delicate Bay Area sensibilities, but that is because living in Northern Cali can make you soft. Personally I find it heartening that there are places where most of the adult males are unconcerned with Bikram yoga and macrobiotic diets. Plus once I was inside I was out of the cold (San Francisco, are you aware that the thermometer goes below 30 degrees? It was terrifying.) and could see what all the fuss was about. As it often goes in life, the beauty is in the simplicity. There are no menus because the only thing they have are super tasty hamburgers and cheeseburgers. They have only basic toppings and are served on a sheet of wax paper. Shit yeah, crank up the Bob Seger. Fries (the skinny shoestring kind which I really like but may not be your cup of grease) or onion rings. The only beer on tap is High Life. I don't know if the Nuge was actually blasting out of the jukebox but it was cranked WAY up in my head. Pay at the bar when you're done by telling them what you had, no checks involved. And now I have returned to the reason I first joined Yelp. I first joined Yelp when I found myself in the suburbs of Chicago with no idea of where to eat. Now, I find myself in the suburbs of Detroit with no idea of where to eat. Miller's Bar had a lot of good reviews, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I ordered up a cheeseburger, fries, and a Miller Lite mainly because when I walk into a place like this one, I figure Miller Lite or Bud is usually on the beer list. The burger was pretty good, but nowhere near the best I've ever had. I ordered mine up medium. The burger is served as is on wax paper and then you can put pickles, mustard, and ketchup on there. The burger is a little thicker than a Whopper but not as thick as what you would find at Fuddruckers. The bun held up ok with the meat juices. The fries were very thin and crispy. These reminded me of the fries I had in my high school cafeteria, granted that's the only thing anyone would ever eat. My meal came out to 10.95 which is a bit on the pricey side and I left still hungry, especially considering I got a 1lb hamburger for 10 bucks the day before (Consult Famous Hamburger review). The service was good. The bar is basically a cross between the bar from Cheers and Moe's Tavern. You can expect to find people like Norm or Barney. Either you're going to like this or you're going to hate it, as people have mentioned in other reviews. I don't mind being in a dark bar so long as the food is good. What also strikes me about this place is the depth of conversation that you can find. I overheard people talking about Ford's new line. I then found myself participating in conversations about college football and then talking about going on safari in South Africa. Go figure. I seriously don't understand why everyone raves about a place that is popular purely for the fact that it lacks everything. Don't get me wrong, I love hole-in-the-wall places. I don't mind eating on paper, and I think unique places are cool - IF they are actually special and didn't just strip away everything for the sake of being unique. Millers makes normal burgers, they are no better than your average small town local burger place. Their burgers lack the toppings - for only selling burgers you'd think they would have tomato slices and some lettuce. I swear people must love this place just because of all the hype that it's special - it's not. Wow, how have I not reviewed Miller's yet? Sheesh... My bf grew up in Dearborn and thought I was crazy when I told him that I had never been there. I remember the first visit I asked him where the menus were and he looked at me like I had horns growing out of my head. They keep it REAL simple with burgers, fries and onion rings... who needs anything else when they do those 3 things so well? I don't even like burgers. I like sliders, but not big, thick, meaty burgers. But they made me a believer. The cheese is soooo good, too. I love their onion rings! Yes, the food comes on deli sheets, but seriously, who cares? If you find yourself at Miller's Bar it's because you need a GOOD burger, so whether it comes on a deli sheet or a plate it doesn't matter, right? Canned pop and beer, and I think they might make mixed drinks, although I'm not 100% on that. Prices are extremely reasonable, and no matter how busy they are (which is practically all the time) you will get prompt service. I just love the simplicity of this place, and the consistency. Holy bageeeeezuz the food is soo good it will make you wanna smack someone lol. Where do I start. Well this place has been open since 1941 serving only burgers and fries but their reputation is impeccable. They really have a fantastic burger recipe. Now everyone claims that they have a great burger but to be honest a good burger comes with experience. I found out the reason why they have such an amazing burger. It because of their grill. To my knowledge they have been cooking on the same grill since 1941. I mean just imagine you have over 50 years of building layer after layer of fantastic flavor. That's something you can't just get anywhere. I really must say that this burger is one of the best burgers in Michigan and the staff is amazing as well. They have what you call the honor system. Basically you order your food with the waitress and when your done you tell the cashier what you had and he rings you up. We made our way out to Dearborn on a humid, rainy weeknight on a mission for a burger, and it did not disappoint. The burger, the bar, the ambiance...were all better than I could have expected, and well worth the hype I've been hearing from my friend. Shortly after our meal he sent me some of his impressions which really summed things up perfectly; so with little help from me, here's our experience at Miller's: No Way to Miss it. Oversized signage beckons 60mph burger seekers. All it tells you is what you need to know - you've arrived at "Miller's Bar." And make no mistake about it - it's a bar. No menus. Sit at the end of the bar, if it's available. Left End - grab the corner and watch baseball on the old TV. Right End - watch the ladies make Miller's heralded hamburgers, "This is where all the magic happens," one burger-lady quipped. Or there's always the middle, where the bartenders serve ice cold Miller on tap (what else?). The bartenders came with the place. I can't imagine them being anywhere else. "I haven't had the burger in 6 years," our bartender volunteered, "Work in a burger place, don't eat the burger. Work in an ice cream shop, don't eat the ice cream. Work in a brothel..." No Windows. The Bar is a sanctuary from high-speed Michigan Avenue and it's Roadside Attractions. It's intimate, yet spartan with a 'dated-yet-timeless' feel. The limited decor is big, just like Michigan Avenue, as we take in the Tigers on the old TV. The place is lively, with regulars downing pitchers and glancing at the game on a single flat screen. The focus is clearly not on sports, entertainment or interior design. It's all about the burgers. No Silverware. The Burger is what it is. Simple, hearty and cooked to perfection. Served the same way for 72 years (with or without cheese and onion) and presented - without presentation - on wax paper. Fries and onion rings also arrive on wax paper in a basket. Makes sense. A tray with salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup, pickles and paper napkins completes the picture at the corner of the bar, where our focus remained for the duration of our stay at Miller's. Solid burger. I had read all the articles and reviews of Miller's bar and how the burgers are just simply amazing. Well when I finally made the 40 minute drive to dearborn to experience this greatness, all I got was disappointment. Yes, the burgers were good, tender and juciy, but so are the burgers that I make myself with meat from Kroger or Meijer. My main problem with Miller's was the lack of options. Mustard, Ketchup, and Raw onions, and pickles, thats it. No special sauce, no mayo, nothing. I will take a burger from Redcoat over Miller's any day of the week. read more

I lived in Dearborn for some 25 years or so (moved to Clinton, MI in 1997). Miller's Bar was always a great place for a burger. I recall that their burgers were very highly rated. I rated them high as well. My check-ins to Miller's would have been in the hundreds. Today, after a visit to Greenfield Village, we went to Miller's for a nostalgic burger. Clinton is an hour drive from Dearborn, so it's not a regular trip. Oh how things seemed to have changed! The burgers were OK. Good meat, Wonder Bread bun (think upscale White Castle). The onion rings were fried frozen wonders. French fries were ok at best. Also, after our waitress served us our beers & burgers, she disappeared for the duration. Not a problem though, I flagged down another waitress for a second round of beer. I am sure this is not a normal thing, but I bring it up because it makes me smile. I live in a rural area of Michigan now. The three nearest places to purchase a good burger are all better burgers than Miller's: Clinton Inn, Dan's Tavern and Bridgewater Tavern. As a side note, Bridgewater Tavern buys their buns from a local bakery in Saline, not Wonder Bakery. Miller's honor system of payment continues to be novel. In my younger years, I thought it was cool. Now that I am older, I think it is a pain in the ass. I have grown accustomed to itemized checks and plastic money. Tried this place for the first time. A few things to say. First of all, they only have like 5 items on the menu; burger, fries, o-rings, tuna sandwich and one other item (I'm forgetting now). I like this aspect because u know their food quality must be pretty good. Disappointment came when I realized the only garnish they have for the burgers is cheese, pickles n raw onion. I stopped here today because I was picking up a keg of exotic German beer from Merchants's Fine Wine in Dearborn (even though it's five hours round trip from Grand Rapids where I live). I can rarely get into Miller's because it's usually packed, but it was manageable today. Nice interior, polite staff and nice patty on my cheeseburgers (yes, two - needed to make up for lost time). I asked for it medium and they did that right, too. All too many restaurants will cremate your hamburger when you ask for it medium, but these folks listened to my request. I ordered an iced tea and they gave me a sweet tea in a can, which was a disappointment. I would expect a can of tea only at a gas station or party store refrigerator, not what is seemingly a classy bar / grill with an iconic reputation. Besides, why did they ASSume I wanted sweet tea? We aren't in Mississippi, where sweet tea reigns supreme. I rarely complain at restaurants on my first or second visit because I want to see how they really are. Not complaining allows for an unbiased assessment of how they act to someone who is seemingly an easy to satisfy pushover. The other thing that was a disappointment is the sorry choices of garnishments. They offered no lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise or grilled onions. They had mustard, ketchup, pickles and RAW onions. That's about as stupid as going to an ice cream place only to find they don't carry vanilla or chocolate. No lettuce or tomato? That's ridiculous. Would I return? Yes, because I've been to too many places that feature burgers dressed to the nines in pretzel buns, crazy sauces, deep fried onion strings that throw so many flavors at you, you can barely taste the meat and might forget it's a hamburger. Sometimes, I just want an old fashioned cheeseburger that's cooked perfectly as these were today. This restaurant has a unique flair. The interior is dark like a dive. The wait staff is friendly and old school. The payment menu is kept in the memories of the wait staff. It's a sit-down, but you're served on wax paper. Payment is done with cash only and on the honor system. It feels like you're in a but of a club eating here, but I'd rather cancel my membership. There was a lot of hype coming into here, but it was honestly disappointing. The burger was not bad. Each one was nice and meaty, albeit unseasoned. The bun that it came on was plain and cheap like the value buns from the grocery store. You get options of onions and cheese and they have pickles at the table. The onion rings are decent, but the fries are kind of soggy and rather plain. A burger, fries and drink will set you back over 10 bucks with tip, which is where I have a problem with the food. It's kind of a rip off. Considering the low buck plating, can only fizzy drink or bottled water only, I can't help but feel a bit cheated by the time it came to pay. For the money, you can get so much more and so much better at so many other places. The place was worth a visit for the novelty, but not worth a repeat. read more

Also, it has a very vintage feel to it as they do not accept credit, only cash, which none of my peers as well as myself have a problem with since the food is so good. read more

Not much to say, we got two cheeseburgers (medium on the patty), and split a side of onion rings. The burgers are definitely better than any chain burger joints (even the better ones). Our patties were cooked to our preferences (medium). Also, the buns were great (they were steamed buns). Onion rings were onion rings. I would recommend. read more

Ok, so having argued this point for eternity with my burger loving friends, but there seems to be several different schools of thought on burgers. Millers is a no-frills burger that is very very good. What they get right is the perfect amount of salt seasoning on the patties, so that each bite is flavorful, meaty goodness. Seems simple, but i'm amazed at all the tasteless patties out there that need the toppings to add flavor. Also, Miller's nails the fact that every great burger needs to have meat with a higher fat content which adds flavor and juiciness. Mix this with a slice of good cheese and slice of raw onion (to cut), and it becomes aperfect symphony of flavors in my mouth. Millers definitely is a slightly uncomfortable hole in the wall, but you can't beat it for a quick tasty burger treat! read more

Possibly better than I remember it? Maybe because I just went to this place on a Friday night, which is a busier night and didn't actually have to wait too long for a table which put me in a good mood. The burger came out as ordered, medium, and of course with cheese. My friends and I commented on the new(er - as I haven't been to this place in ages, so who knows how long it actually has been up) sign that actually lists what they serve. It's a very good simple burger, not great but definitely solid. People that are giving 1 or 2 stars are just being annoying. They are complaining about a 7$ burger. It's not fast food dummies! The place is a bar and a bit old school, so probably not for people that like to complain about a waitress that doesn't chit chat meaningless convo.
