For years, I've been talking about how overrated the Miller's burger is -- they've been living off of hype for years, overpriced, etc. This afternoon, I realized that I hadn't actually eaten at Miller's in ages, and that my assessment needed to be reevaluated. Consider this a mea culpa. While I do think the hype is impossible to live up to (having a write up in Food &a Wine is a bit absurd), this really is a pretty damn good bar burger. Is it special? Eh, tough to say. There is kind of a romanticism to the simplicity: no seasoning, fresh ground round, cooked on a flattop at high heat, and served only with cheese (American or Swiss) and maybe a slice of onion, on wax paper. By no means do I think this is the best bar burger in metro Detroit (that honor belongs to the Bronx Bar in midtown), but it certainly belongs in the conversation. read more

I HATE when I intend to go out for a night on the town for social drinking, and get an old server... They usually try to treat me like I don't know the difference between top and bottom shelf. What? I know the difference between VSOP and Christian Brothers, and Henny and E&J. I've NEVER EVER EVER had a younger server try that mess. They know what's up. When I was new to the bar scene I wouldn't say anything out of fear of offending the server/tender, but I've learned if they wanna be bold enough to try to cheat me, I need to be bold enough to call them out. So I did. I didn't do it angry, loud, ratchet, 'black' girl style, I just gave her a face and told her "You know damn well that's not Henny in that glass". She gave me a smirk and said: "wow, you really know your stuff." Yes ma'am, I do- and you knew what you were doing serving that brown water. The cheeseburger was pretty decent though. It was plain but thick and juicy. My date paid so I'm not sure how much it cost. The fries were plain, nothing to brag about. This place WAS good but today I went and I'm pretty sure it was a frozen patty because it was all grease and shaped like a Gordon good service frozen burger. I felt sick. This place stinks. We asked for a menu. We were told they didn't have one. I ordered a couple of cheeseburgers. Then the burgers arrived on a napkin. No plate. When it came time to pay the bill the waitress disappeared. I asked the bartender for the bill. He said it was $28.50. What?!!! $28.50 for two beers and two cheeseburgers. Now I know why they don't have a menu. Then to add insult to injury they did that take cash and I had to go to the ATM machine and pay an extra $2.50 to pay them in cash. I am giving millers three stars rather then two because their staff is nice and their honor system is unique. Now, as great as the aroma is outside and I know so many people rave about their burgers... but personally the burgers dont do it for me. Not sure how to describe it, perhaps too much hype did it for me? Interior is a little old fashioned which is nice but I wish there were windows. I wish they had fountain drinks but rather you get the can. Dont pass the place up though, definitely recommend going for the experience it self. read more

Burgers, that's all this place is, only go here for burgers that's pretty much all they got. Their burgers are actually really good, not the best burger I have ever had but top five in Detroit area for sure. I got it with some pickles, slice of cheese and slice of onion and it was delicious I wanted to order a second one as soon as I finished. The place is cash only and its on the honor system when youre done you just tell them what you had and ring you up at the bar or up front. I would go here again for sure. read more

Just awful service. They were busy but not slammed. Sat down right away. A server said she would be right with us. 15 minutes later a couple that was sat after us was served beverages. Haters gonna hate. Millers is legit. No nonsense and definitely no frills haha. Do not come here if you are expecting a luxury eating experience. This is a dive bar if there ever was one. This place used to be great. Kind of cool that they let you pay on the honor system and that they don't accept cash. (I think were going to far from a cash system) The burger is really good to me, I know a couple people who don't like it at all though. That all being said, I gave it one star because they really rubbed me the wrong way the last two times I was there. Most of my reviews are positive on Yelp, and I'm writing this review over two weeks after I was at Miller's last, so obviously it's still bothering me for some stupid reason. I ordered two burgers, onion rings and a water. She brought a bottled water and I told her I just wanted a glass of water. She then told me "If you're not drinking alcohol you have to buy a bottled water, only people who are drinking get free water." So I told her how ridiculous this (what I believe to be) newer policy was! I can spend $14 on food and not be given a free water, but If I actually buy no food and one beer my water is free?? I find this policy to be extremely disrespectful! Especially at a place that is kind of a staple, and knows it can take advantage of people by squeezing an extra few bucks, by forcing them to buy a SMALL bottle of water when they don't buy alcohol with their food on a Wednesday afternoon. It's a slimy thing to do Millers. You know you have a built in business, and you're taking advantage of people with the one thing that has been free at restaurants since the beginning of time, water. Step inside the doors of Miller's Bar and you'll enter a dark fortress where the automotive elite, college students, average joes, and bikers meet to eat together as strangers bonded by juicy meaty goodness at the bar as well as the many surrounded tables. Miller's is an excellent establishment that doesn't have any dress codes or n aura of snobbiness.It's just a place where you can walk into and get a damn good meal. (Cash only - bring cash, it's worth it) Miller's is old school......as the late "Rowdy" Roddy Piper would say, Miller's is Old School, Miller's was Old School, before Old School was cool. It's meat and bun and cheese and onion if you wish served on a bun soaking in meat juices that comes delievered served on wax paper and it tastes so damn good man, so damn good. You want condiments, there's a pickle jar near by along with ketchup and mustard. If you need nothing else on your burger here, maybe a tasty beer to help wash down the greatness. Fries are okay and I guess they have onion rings, but those aren't really needed here. Forget the sides and just order a secondary burger to go along with the first one. The Hamburger patty here is the star and you definitely just want to eat as much of that as possible. I'd get 3, it's that damn good man. The service is great here and the patrons are nice. The tables are convenient and comfy, but the best seat in the house is behind the main bar. To sit there means you get to peak in on the kitchen and see the steel heated canvas that the cook prepares the meat on......it's like watching an artist creat a masterpiece of art, but juicy meat is their canvas and we all get to feel alive in this great museum of taste. Miller's Bar goes by an honor system, which means that at the end of your trip, you tell your server what you ordered and they believe you. To many, it may sound silly, people will be like, why can't I just lie and say I ordered 1 burger, fry and beer when I actually ordered 2 of each? Answer - Because they are THAT good, so fucking good, pardon my French, and that they KNOW that their patron's won't lie about anything. This place was probably clever in 1981, when most of it's patrons were last outdoors. It's now completely dated, creepy, and overall just bad. I love a great restaurant, love a great burger and really love a great dive bar. This wasn't any of those things. We had a late lunch on a Wednesday. The atmosphere is creepy from the start. The place is full, but it's eerily quiet. The music is provided from a boom box in the kitchen which is softly humming what seems to be a recording of whatever dental office assistants listened to at their desks in 1981 to stay awake. If you speak normally, you know every table will hear your every word. So, you find yourself whispering in a totally full restaurant/bar. It honestly felt like we had accidentally walked into someone's graduation party planning meeting. It's not divey in any good way. It's just old. We stayed anyway. Service was quick and friendly enough. Other reviews point to the decent (but undercooked) burgers, the honor system, and cash-only policies. These are all true. A few notes: The burgers are fine. Not good, not great, but fine. We had onion rings that were pointlessly generic and fries that had clearly been cooked in the same oil as the onion rings and a dozen other random things, as the fries were anemic and tasted like...well..a dozen random things. About the honor system: Is it kind of quaint and charming if you don't think about it very much? Sure. When you think about it though, now I have to repeat my order twice. Once to the waitress, once to the bartender that I pay. Why? So you don't have to be bothered to write it down? I'm paying you. How about you write it down so I don't have to repeat myself. For every burger we purchased, you need to know if it had "cheese", so you can charge me an extra nickel? Maybe someone should have written that down so we could avoid this tedious and annoying conversation. Establishments that have figured this out include...everywhere. The "honor system", IMHO, isn't charming- it's lazy. Don't want to accept plastic? Maybe not a big deal in 1981, where we've crash-landed. Today though, again, this is Millers' way of saying "Our convenience is more important than yours". Sure, there's an ATM by the door. But again, why am I making a special trip to find a special way to pay you? Beers were just fine and prices were about what you'd expect (not a great value, but not a ripoff). Really! Only two stars! They're lucky to get that. I hadn't been to Miller's in about twenty years. I remember it being as good as everyone raves about here on Yelp. Well I ventured here one Satuday afternoon with my daughter and her now finace'. We were hunting around for a hall for their reception. As we were driving toward Telegraph I screeched my tires and pulled a hard right into Miller's parking lot. They thought it was good idea too and now I would finally get my chance to try one of these Detroit famous burgers again. Well what else would Burger Boy have. Burger, fries and one ice cold beer. After putting the condiments on that I love(onions, mustard, lettuce, dab of ketchup, pickles) I took my first bite. Hmmm, need another. Add french fry. Hmmm. Not as good as I remember it. Try a little more. Hmmm, not that good! Here's my taste analysis. It tasted like I took some hamburger(not ground round or sirloin) and tossed it on my no-stick frying pan at home. No taste at all. The fries were good. Service was another thing. Boy did our waitress have an attitude. All bad. Man, go home get your sh*t together and come back and wait on me. I'm your customer. Meh, it's ok but not nearly as good as advertised. Not sure why, but it took me more than three years of working in and around Dearborn to stop into Miller's bar. I kept being told it's the best burger in town, god I hope not. I mean the burger was very good, but nothing different than I can make at home, and I'm not chef. For it to be the "best in town," I want something special. I find it weird that they don't do tickets either, your bill is completely on the honor system. For a place that has such high praise, it sucks. So this bar has some quirky things about it. The waitresses don't want to bring you water, they don't use plates (just wax paper for everything), you pay at the bar in an honor system (i like this), they don't have real mayo and cheez wiz comes on the burgers. It is filled with old-timers and families that have come to reclaim whatever glory they remember from earlier times in dearborn. Our waitress was rude to half of our party when the rest of us came a little later than expected, then nice when she realized we were, in fact, going to show up and maybe tip her. she was fast, but not particularly nice or gracious. is this another one of your quirks, Miller's? your waitstaff is rude? The burgers were pretty good. (They also like to use some different scale of doneness for their burgers. If you ask for it medium, they'll make it medium-rare. why? You can't bother to teach your cooks? ) The patties are hand formed and juicy. I really like how they put the cheese under the patty, which is kind of a structural marvel. But the topping choices suck, and there's no way i'm taking miracle whip over mayo on a burger. If you want onions, they will bring them to you on a piece of wax paper (hm). the onion-pickle-mustard combo is actually a pretty phenomenal thing (as evidenced by the amount of slider places in Detroit) but it is not played up as it maybe should be. Eeeeeeh. A week ago I had a burger, onion rings, and a beer (a most healthful meal, right?). I wasn't particularly impressed with the burger, but did like the onion rings. In fact, I didn't like the burger. I suppose I may have been slightly put off because of my brief interaction with the server before the meal. Millers has good burgers but the waitstaff could use some tips on manners. Just because a place does one thing well and is always busy their staff thinks they can act like it is an honor for them to serve you. Always liked the bugers but never been impressed with some of the long timers there. My mother in law stopped at Millers by herself two weeks ago because she really wanted a Miller burger. Going out by herself was hard enough..but as she waited in line she was bypassed for a table twice...then a waitress said "There is a single seat open at the bar..you can`t have a table by yourself" Well if was me I would not care but my MIL was not going to plop herself down on a stool between groups of younger men because she felt totally intimidated. So she just left without eating. Use some sense now and then and take care of the older customers too. Again this has nothing to do with the food..but Millers really needs to adjust some of the attitudes of the waitstaff! read more

He's been gone for a couple decades now and all they are doing is cooking Gordon Foods 1/2 pounders (I saw the packages behind the counter). I do not understand how this place has 205 reviews and an average rating of 4 stars. I went in because I had read good things and saw it had won "Vote 4 the Best" in the Burger category. I feel like I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone for lunch and can't understand how people can say they have good burgers when they serve the most generic and 100% unseasoned Gordon Foods beef patties(served on a flimsy 10¢ bun). The fries were also made of substandard cardboard that I rank below most fast food joints. To top it all off, they must have the most impressive profit margin imaginable because the worst burger/fry combo of my life came out to $9.60! Are you serious?! There are at least 30 other restaurants in the Dearborn area where you can get genuine quality food at 1/2 the price. In addition to crappy food and high cost, they won't give you tap water unless you buy a piss light beer or high fructose corn syrup carbonated beverage. Ridiculous! If I'm going for a work lunch, I'm not going to order a beer. When my group payed with the honor system at the end, the bartender was very skeptical and treated us like we were cheating him when we said we didn't get a drink. Avoid this place at all costs! Whoever made the statement "it's as American as apple pie" has never tried a Miller's burger. It should be: "As American as a Burger." And Miller's burgers are what we all think of when we think BURGER. No frills, just simple, great tasting burgers. As others have mentioned, they run on the honor system. They only take cash and they obviously take great pride in what they do. If you aren't mesmerized by the wafting smell of delicious burgers on the grill just sitting there, I suggest you get checked out. Your burger doesn't come on a plate. It comes on a piece of wax paper. Your burger is then accompanied by a jar of sliced pickles, ketchup and mustard for toppings. You can ask for onion if that's your steez. It's definitely mine! The bun, the melty American cheese, the perfectly cooked thick beef patty...OHHH the satisfaction! This is what grill obsessed fathers aspire to. This burger is the one. No coleslaw, no thousand island. Just pure brutish American condiments slapped on top of a perfectly cooked beef patty. They use great tasting beef. That's key. Not sure if they added a hint of garlic but I swear I tasted something more than just beef, something that really brought the savory juicy flavors out. Yelp describes 2 stars as "Meh. I've experienced better." And it is so true for this place. Someone at some point decides a place like this is so "clever" or "fun" or "interesting" that I think everyone just goes along with it. Like it's something special for serving greasy, fatty food without a plate. Usually I'm a fan of sticky-floored dive bars, but this place was unimpressive. The burgers were pretty good, but nothing special. Fries were overdone for my preference. Onion rings were average, too. Someone in the group wanted a grilled chicken sandwich (on website), but then we discover they only have fried chicken. Just an annoying discrepancy to mention. Also, I agree with another reviewer here that the 'honor system' seems like laziness on their part. I don't care about the honor system, I'm going to pay for what I got regardless. So why couldn't you just write it all down and keep it together? When you go to Millers, you're paying them for fat and grease and very little service. So.. why bother? You can make a hamburger just as good at home (slop the bun in grease, that's what they do) and buy some frozen fries/onion rings (same difference). You're better off. read more

My guess is that Miller's Bar used to be great and most people keep coming back due to nostalgia. Now, if you eat every last French fry and all of your fast food tier hamburger you might walk out full. I'm 5'9" 180lbs. I don't need a lot of food to get full. Service was nearly nonexistent and when she did show up, she was rude and curt. I honestly like Burger King better than Miller's Bar - and I'm not a fan of fast food. Meh - I've experienced better. I went here with a group of friends because I heard it was the best but soon learned that our taste in burgers, fries, beverages, seating and service vary greatly. The burgers were decent but nothing to warrant adjectives like "delicious", "one-of-kind" or "great". The beef was plenty and condiments like ketchup, mustard, fresh onions and pickles were on the table so that you can literally, "make it your way". This was a plus. The fries are better off in the trash than in your mouth. They were flavorless, greasy and limp. Yuck! The beer selection is low but I do like what they have. The serving size of alcohol reminds me of being in Europe (think very small) but I guess it's ok. Seating can be hard to come by and don't expect a menu or great service. It's totally inconspicuous between the endless strip malls that showcase capitalism at its worst of Michigan Ave in the down-right middle income area of the Dearborn-Inkster border. Yet, this place holds steady with its pure essence. The burger It's DAMN tasty. I ordered a to-go medium-rare which ended up being cooked to medium-well by time I got to eat it (not their fault for making traffic horrendous!). The cheese is shaved off of this block that looks so familiar to me and tastes like the same cheese block my grandmother used to shave off for our grilled cheese sandwiches. What the hell is that? It's not velveeta! It's some Wisconsin brand, haven't seen it since the 90s. If you order "everything" you get: a thick slab of onion, mustard, ketchup, pickles. No sick looking tomato, no totally useless piece of wilted lettuce. How beautiful is that? The onion rings You people who sing the praises of these onion rings clearly never had the mother of all onion rings at Sidetrack. But that's OK. My husband and I's first time here. There is no menu. Your choice is a burger or chicken sandwich. Velveeta or swiss cheese. French fries or onion rings. I'm really not sure why Miller's Bar is always in the Top 10 Burgers of SE Michigan. I think they're like an old politician - people notice the name, so automatically vote for them... They are nothing fancy, nor are the burgers fantastic. They're just alright. I always order my burger medium, and they always bring it medium rare with the bottom bun sopping wet with red juice... As far as seasoned and flavorful, there's nothing really special, it's just an average bar burger, nothing else... The fries are thin cut and the onion rings are thick. LOL Both are good... Something is broken. It's either me or Detroit's collective sense of what an awesome burger is. There is nothing wrong with the burger I had at Millers. It tasted good, was juicy, and was dutifully cooked to medium upon request. The cheese was melted and quite tasty. Nothing jumps out and screams "OMG this is the best burger ever if I were alone I would eat it with my pants off" etc. The burger was good but not good enough get me to go out of my way to come here again. The fries I had however were undercooked by quite a bit. Really disappointing because all they do is burgers fries and onion rings. how hard is it to not mess up fries? I have nothing against dives either but 4 teeny tiny glasses of Miller, 2 burgers, and two fries eaten off of paper for $25 is not really a bargain for such a dive-y place. Meh, is just about the total some of the visit! A lot of ranting and raving about a great burger, which to me is really just an "ok" burger, mixed with a long history and a lot of hype! A rather boring bar that without all the hoopla, would likely not have survived the economic decline! Based on the offerings here and my observations, I would say this simply is not a sustainable business on its own, but again the hype has propelled it beyond the undeniable fate a place like this would face if it had not of placed it on a pedestal. Now for the goods, service was reasonably fast, friendly and attentive. The burger was prepared to order and the fries & onion rings were hot. Thats it! Now for the rest (not so good and other). The draft beer came in one of those small drinking type glasses you see at a hospital cafeteria (no boombas here), I have seen pictures with the normal glasses, maybe they were all dirty. It seemed to mirror dinner time at Denny's with the vast blue hair activity and seemed the average age of the joint was about 70 with more than a few looking to be in their upper 80's and up! The bun on my burger was not very good, it seemed stale or like the value buns you get at the grocery store. The size of the burger! (From the hype I envisioned this monster half pounder oozing of juicy goodness, but instead got a quarter or third pounder, not really sure!) Price seemed to be a bit on the high side considering they type of place this is. All in all, this visit was just ok, and I would certainly not go out of my way to go here, but if the stars were aligned just right and my group were all going there, I would go again! read more

Miller's Bar sure seemed to have a lot of hype to it, but I was kind of disappointed. Maybe if I hadn't heard such remarkable things about it, I would have been more impressed. Their selection seems to be somewhat small, focusing on their hamburgers. The waitress seemed annoyed that we weren't familiar with the way Miller's works, so at the time I didn't know much about what they had beyond a burger. Later I found they did have a few other sandwiches to offer. That burger comes on a piece of wax paper, with your fries in a basket. I'm OK with that, as having a plate isn't something I think is required for this type of meal. The burger itself - which was praised by so many - wasn't anything special. I've had equally good burgers at many restaurants. Greasy, but that was to be expected. If you want health food, you should find a different place (and probably something besides a hamburger). If I didn't feel like I was an enemy having not been here before, I would have gave the place another star or two, but if they don't want new customers, that's fine. I should really give this joint one star, but I hate to do that. I'm not sure what it is about Miller's that people like. It's like people live in an alternate universe where they enjoy having their food served in a wrapper by a sullen, surly grandmother type. Not me. The burgers are just OK. There are much better burgers in the Detroit area, that's for sure. Red Coat Tavern for one. The service is horrible...the waitresses at Millers are bar none the most sullen and crabby women with serious attitudes I have encountered in a restaurant. And complaining to the manager/owner just gets you a "if you don't like it go somewhere else" response. If you like being treated like crap, getting a so-so burger tossed onto the table in front of you (no plate or basket), and having to stand in line to boot, Miller's is for you. I'll pass! read more

Am I missing something, I don't get all the hype for this place?? Burger patty was decent size, but was served on a crappy bun and had no seasoning at all. The onion rings were standard frozen onion rings you find at low end diners. My coworker and I ordered 2 burgers, 2 onion rings and 2 drinks (pop, water) = $25 There are a number of new places specializing in burgers in Dearborn. ALL of them are better options. I personally don't find the honor system thing all that cute either. The wait staff is lazy and have lousy attitudes. Unless someone is buying, I'm not going back. read more

"Best Burger in Detroit?" Then Detroit has more serious problems than we thought. I'm grateful to Yelp for leading me to this place, and for tipping me off to the particular local customs that would have been off-putting otherwise. But mosly I'm greatful I travelled less than a mile to get here, because it just wasn't that great. To be clear- I love divey place like this, and it's nice that if I want to get ripped on Manhattans or Old Fashioneds I can get a serviceable burger. But that's all it is. read more

Boy, oh boy. Whatever that guy was smoking the day he went to Millers Bar and said it was the SEVENTH BEST BURGER IN AMERICA, i would like double of that. Honestly, Redcoat Tavern has a better burger than this place and it didn't even make the list! It even placed ahead of Louis' Lunch, the place that apparently came up with the burger! First off, the facade of the place is as bare as the walls of an insane asylum. I entered through the door confused since you end up right in front of a wall and the kitchen to your left. After making my way past the lean-to where the waitresses gathered, I sat down, looking around and gathering senses on the ambiance of the place. I will say the waitress was kind and friendly as she took our order. I got the cheeseburger, onion rings, and a Coke. The best part of the whole place, were the container of pickles sitting on the table. I love pickles. Once the burger came out on the wax paper, it looked great, to be honest and I thought it would live up to the lofty expectations. I took a bite expecting to be immersed in a juicy and flavorful hamburger, but after a few bites, I thought to myself, "This is it?" I was sorely disappointed by the lack juiciness and mundaneness of the burger. And the onion rings? They tasted like they were from the frozen food section of a grocery store. Maybe it was my fault for thinking so highly of this place. That it would sweep me off my feet, singing hallelujah but boy was I brought back down to earth! I know that this place is unpretentious with its burger not having anything on it except onion and pickle, but the meat sure as hell didn't impress me. The less condiments on the burger, the more you'd better have a bomb ass piece of meat on the bun! That did not happen. If I want a truly remarkable burger experience, I am going to Redcoat Tavern. It may be more expensive, but its definitely worth every penny. read more
