I have driven past this place many times and decided to stop for an early lunch today before a business meeting. I sat at the counter, took 10 minutes for a server to take my order. I ordered the chicken salad platter, chicken salad was very good, cole slaw was good, vegetables were fresh, potato salad undercooked, and the hard boiled eggs so overcooked the yolks were green. The restaurant was clean and the person at the door who greeted all guests very friendly. The staff thought it was better to sit at the counter playing with their cell phones rather than be attentive to customers and the only conversation between them was cannot wait until my shift is over to leave. When your team all wants something different for lunch including yourself we thought it would be best to go to Millburn Diner since we working around the corner. I love a good New Jersey dinner and this one lived up to my expectations. I heard they have a very good breakfast and is known for its blueberry pancakes. I strayed away from breakfast and went for the soup and salad. Since it was Thursday they had split pea soup on the menu so I ordered it and it was hot with seasoned croutons. I also got a Cobb salad with turkey. It was a really big and I didn't get to finish it all none the lest I was glad I got the salad because I left very full. Several of my coworkers also got salad and soups I will have to try the French onion soup which is one of my favorite soups based on my teammate telling me how good it was. My teammates who have been before ordered the triple decker BLT which they all raced about. Which is decked like your typical club sandwich but one of the layers was grilled cheese. For starters, the portion sizes are great! I had a hard time choosing between the pancakes and the french toast. Both were good, but I think the pancakes are better (but I may be bias!) Recapping the last three times I was there: I ordered a Sloppy Joe and asked they replace the corn beef and pastrami with roast beef. Tried to substitute sweet potato fries for regular ones they brought out both and tried to charge more for an extra side instead of the substitution price. Not the end of the world and it was mostly rectified, but not great. Next time in service was okay, omelet was perfectly fine, home fries were mediocre. Overall, fine enough. Then yesterday I come in and we had to wait 45 minutes for our food. Not once did the server indicate they were backed up until half an hour I had to flag him down and ask what was going. He hadn't even brought my soda at that point. Around 45 minutes just before my food eventually arrives I check with the manager and the waiter walking by says loud enough for me to hear i'm not the only one waiting, as if everyone else getting shitty service somehow is supposed to make it better? This diner was a disappointment... it took them 15 to almost 20 mins to give us 2 cups of hot water with tea? Really? Took 30 mins for the waitress to inform my fiancé that the kitchen was out of all ingredients to make his meal, which was listed on the "daily special" . Think there's an issue with the line chef and kitchen... while we waited .. we observed that many other tables seemed to have issues with their orders. It's a pretty standard NJ diner. It's good for breakfast food, salads, short-orders, etc. They have their own private parking lot which is a huge plus in Millburn. The serving staff seemed a bit overwhelmed, even though it wasn't particularly packed. However, our server couldn't have been any friendlier, especially to my kids, which I appreciate. First time here, was just looking for a diner to eat with my parents & we loved it. The parking was a little difficult to get in to but that was the least of our concerns. The service was quick & helpful. The waiters were mostlt spanish which i really appreciated. Our Millburn Diner waitress was nice but a little wonky (no, I won't elaborate). We only ate dessert, and it was all delicious...huge pieces of chocolate cake and cheesecake,and I had a big dish of Jell-O with whipped cream. How do you mess up breakfast in a diner? Everything was extra greasy. My eggs (supposed to be over-medium) had really raw whites as if they were sunny side up but put down on the plate. My homefries were cold and tasteless. Toast showed up late. I'll give our waitress the fact that the place was packed but she still stunk. Since this place doesn't even have an atmosphere to speak of, I can't really find any reason to go back. It was walking distance from where we had parked so that's how we got here. Typical suburban diner with average diner food. Nothing special, nothing eclectic. Servers later in the evenings when things are quiet are friendly and chatty in a good way. But on average the service is poor. No one comes by to check on you unless you wave them over. They are accommodating when you ask for things like high chairs, more napkins, etc. A good place if you just want some variety but a lot of the food tastes not so home made and processed. Wide variety of diner type fare and convenient. You have to pay upfront. I like the option to pay at the table when I'm done. But I'll go there again when I want diner food. This is my absolute favorite diner. I have been coming here for nearly 10 years. I was reading the negative reviews below and I think they are unfair. The food is delicious. That to me is most important factor to judge this diner by. There was another review expecting a more upbeat vibe. I don't expect that from them because I think of this diner more as a legit family restaurant and not like one of those flashy, dare I say tacky-looking 24hr diners. --lol, I still love disco fries at 3am, so I'm not knocking those diners at all, haha. The Matzoh Ball Soup here is fantastic. The broth is fresh and flavorful. Their lobster soup (a special I had recently) was the best I have ever tasted; the meat was so soft and the broth was delicately flavored with a perfect texture. - The Greek Combo is always my go to entree. Someone below complained about the nutmeg and cinnamon notes in the moussaka, but that's what makes it so tasty, and in my opinion better than the Greek restaurant down the street! ***You honestly cannot go wrong with any entree you select. The servers are attentive and really nice, even when it gets really busy and packed. There is probably only one server (who I think some of these negative reviews are about) that seems to have a grumpy expression on her face and a short temper, but I wouldn't let that deter anyone else from not coming here.
