Ordered a pizza last night for delivery and asked for it well done because a lot of times the pizza is undercooked. When it was delivered the pizza was pretty much raw the slices weren't cut all the way through so it was hard to get apart and when we went to take a slice all the cheese fell off it so you're just getting a raw piece of dough we had to put the cheese back on with their hands and pretty much after one or two bites we threw the whole pie in the garbage cause it was an edible. It's a shame because whenever we go in for slices the slices are usually good but won't whenever we order a pie it's usually undercooked and that's why we asked for it well done but it was still pretty much raw read more

Conveniently located downtown and near the train station, Zappia's is a great spot to stop and grab a sandwich. The bread for their subs was probably the best part about the food, it was delicious. Their menu seems large, but also somewhat limited in that there are only about 6 types of subs to choose from and nearly all involved multiple types of meat versus a simple ingredient list. (The menu online is larger than what was posted in the deli.) It was not clear if you could get the panini ingredients on a sub sandwich, for example. They were very short staffed on a weekend lunch hour - there were two men at the prep counter and one woman who was manning the register, taking orders, answering phones, and making sandwiches - and there was a line backed up waiting so it wasn't the right time to ask about menu swaps. It is also a full-service deli to get sliced meats and cheeses. The messy prep counter and the way multiple orders were being made at once by the same individuals means this deli is definitely NOT allergen or cross-contamination friendly. The prices initially seem a little high, but the sandwiches are larger than most delis or chains like Subway, the "half" size is comparable to a full sandwich elsewhere. read more

**this review is just for their catering business ** We placed a large catering order with Zappia's just a few days in advance of when we'd need it and had some dietary restrictions that they had no problem accommodating. We got: 1. A large sloppy joe platter and requested they make the sandwiches without any dairy (they otherwise come with cheese) 2. A large tray of wraps - they let us customize which wraps which picked v giving us a random assortment 3. A medium sandwich tray of just veggie sandwiches They had a surprising number of vegetarian sandwich options, and all three platters were a huge hit with our guests. Zappia's also delivered on time and for free, which was a really nice surprise too. The prices overall were incredibly reasonable and hundreds of dollars cheaper than another place we called first. We will happily cater from Zappia's again. read more

Zappia's catered our daughter's Baby Shower and they did a terrific job. We used their recommended servers and bartender, who I believe are called "We're having a Party" and they could not have been more accommodating and friendly. They even helped us set up the tables and chairs and carefully packed up all the leftovers, The food was amazing and we especially loved their delicious Tortellini Bolognese! I had a small event 6-8ppl and ordered from Zappias. Since it was such a small event the catering menu didn't really work for us. Nick was wonderful to work with. We spoke over the phone and email. They made special portions of the salads, a small tray of rollatini and sandwiches. The food was delicious, delivered on time and came with plastic serving utensils. However, on another occasion I had a less than wonderful experience. Around 3pm I placed a regular delivery order to be delivered at 6:30pm. The delivery was over 30 minutes late and missing an item in the order. When we called they provided a gift card. Favorites: white pizza, strawberry field salad, eggplant rollatini, blackened salmon sandwich, endive salad The quinoa salad is okay but the name is slightly deceiving; it's a spinach salad with a sprinkle of quinoa. read more

We stopped Summit NJ to pick up a Ski jacket I purchased on FB on the way to Vermont. By chance I walked into Zappia's and ordered a Ruben for the road. I got in my car and started driving and my 16yo (who does not like any food I like) asked what was in the bag. I told her it was a Ruben. She promptly devoured 1/2 of it and informed that it was "the best sandwich ever". I ate the other half and it was by far the best Ruben I have had in eons! It was so good we opted to go over an hour and 1/2 out of our way on the way home 3 days later to get two more. It's was worth the trip. Let me lead by saying I hate sandwiches and especially when there's a million choices of them. But here, I had THE BEST PANINI I've ever had in my life. I was at a business meeting and couldn't escape this place, looked around like a scared puppy at the hundreds of sandwich options. Grilled cheese, fried chicken, pesto sauce, marnira, wheat bread, roll, salads, and the list goes on and on.... At a moment of desperation with a long line forming behind me and a trickle of sweat starting to slide down my neck....I decided to just blurt out one of the many options I saw. "CORDON BLUE PANINI!" For $8 and about 15 minutes of my life I was in prosciutto, mozzorella and sliced bread heaven. There are a few tables toward the front, and a long butcher's block style community table toward the back. Sandwiches, paninis and wraps are all made to order and range from standard classics to more adventurous deluxe options. Service is prompt and reviewers are right when they say don't dawdle in line. Only step up to the counter when you're ready to order or you may be run over by the commuter crowd racing to grab lunch before their train. Location is another upside to this gem. Right in downtown Summit (which I recently discovered is a great shop-around, ladies day out type town) and right across from the train station and street parking. This is my 1st visit and I tried the Mediterranean panini. It's a sliced grilled chicken (the description says grilled chicken cutlet, but it was deli-sliced), sun-dried tomatoes, fresh spinach, mozzarella & pesto. It was nothing to write home about. I had to add a packet of spicy mustard to give it more flavor, because otherwise it was quite bland. Disappointing for a $9.00 sandwich. I was fortunate to arrive on a Saturday late morning when it was not busy at all. I walked right up to the counter and placed an order right away. There was only one other customer there. The place is clean and neat, and there's a small outside seating area in front of the store, and it's in a very nice area. Though I am not sold on to the place with the disappointing sandwich. Probably my favorite deli in the area as far as food quality is concerned. Sandwiches are excellent - the Surgeon General (smoked ham, turkey, cheddar cheese, honey mustard) is so good that I get it basically every time I go. The only reason I'm not giving it 5/5 is because it's very clearly understaffed and the service can be frustratingly slow sometimes - I ordered in advance last time and I still had to wait 5-10 minutes just for someone to get to the cashier, despite the fact it was lunch time. Great food all the subs are good can't go wrong . Great service fast friendly. Alot of people think deli just means subs. But they have great hot dishes and a hot buffet selection everyday and seasonal soups . Cx Chile and seafood chowder are the best. The chicken fingers are the best !! Homemade I went somewhere else after and you can tell the difference from frozen. Frozen ones all same shape and size chewy. And the burgers tops five guys in my opinion. I can go on for days. I've hesitated years to confess how good this sandwich is because I didn't want the market to get flooded and jeopardize the quality of something I love. All I can say is OH MY GOD!!! Places like this are why I love the East Coast. I just flew into Newark from Los Angeles on a Red Eye. And randomly stopped in Summit just looking for a quick breakfast sandwich. Could not of picked a better spot. The guy at the register was amazingly friendly and recommended I try the Hungryman. Which was 3 fried eggs, ham, bacon, and sausage on a fresh italian sub roll with american cheese, salt, pepper, and ketchup. It was UNREAL. Almost passed by this place a couple of times without realizing it was there. Finally was able to find a spot and walked to this deli. Once inside I was surprised by how long it was and big (from the outside it looks tiny). Menu is extensive and everything looks good. Must say everything is on the pricey side. I had a Panini (breaded chicken cutlet). Finally tried one of their sandwiches after going here a few more times. Fresh, authentic Italian bread with Boars Head (the best) cold cuts. Fresh ingredients too. Very good deli with it's wannabe Italian old school charm. The only downside is if you get a hot sandwich or even cold ones infact, it does take time for them to make it. I did have their soup which was eh. Service is good and friendly. They cater and have pastries (nothing fancy) . A couple of tables outside which give you a nice people watching seat. read more

Back when I worked in the area this was my go to spot for take out lunch. Trolling my old neighborhood I had to stop in and was glad to see it's still as good as ever. To best understand this place, you have to know the layout. When you walk in there are prepared sandwiches and salads for a quick to go. Head down the lane and you can start the row of cafeteria style cold and hot foods. You can make 'meals' or you can get individual sides. So for example I got a meal consisting of beef over mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables with an extra side of tomato and mozzarella. They are also a full blown deli in that you can buy fresh meats, cheeses, and sides by the pound. Now behind all the counters on the wall is a massive list of menu items they make to go. Like any good deli, you should feel completely overwhelmed with all the incredible choices. Food is fresh, terrific variety, huge portions, and for what it is a great buy. This is real food people. A small tip, if you aren't sure what you want, just hang back and scope things out first. They have quite a regular following who order with stampede like efficiency. Pretty good. Kinda pricey seeing how it's next to a subway sandwich shop but the food quality is very good. Often very busy which is a testament to their customerloyalty which has to come from somewhere, I guess. Kinda dark and the side wall makes you think you're in a kitchen and bath store; like the counter looks likes a display kitchen. Kinda cute but also kinda out of place. Food wait time is adequate but depends on how many people are there, which makes sense. Some seating but mostly people buy to go In the end, no real reason to go; no real reason not to go. So one day i was looking for a good sandwich-- a friend recommended Zappia's. I was not disappointed in the sandwich, great ingredients, bread and veggies. Price is a bit higher than you might think, but it is worth it for a quality sandwich. Been coming here since the '80s when Mr. Zappia opened it. Always great food and still in the family, as Nick Zappia is one of the owners. As many times as I've eaten here, I never tried the cheeseburger, which I've been told many times was seriously delicious. Well guess what folks, I tried my first one today and I think you could call this the best burger in town. We got Zappia's to cater my future sister-in-law's bridal shower and the food was delicious! Everyone raves about how good the food was! The staff was so friendly and easy to work with. The food was ready when I went to pick it up and they help me carry everything out to my car. The restaurant was extremely clean and they had a lot of safety and sanitary procedure in place for everyone's health and safety. I can't say enough wonderful things about Zappia's! This is a very solid deli to have nearby, the quality of the ingredients is a good notch above average. The chicken sandwiches I've had here come with a pretty large, nicely breaded and cooked cutlet. All the bread, veggies, etc. are well tended to and fresh. We have known them for a long time and the food is consistently good, hot and cold. Today however we ordered Corporate Lunch Package #2 and I must say I was super pleasantly surprised! The presentation was absolutely beautiful - the sandwich platter was decorated with fresh flowers - beautiful! I wish I had taken pictures... the salads were huge - 2 of them - and cold and the beverages were cold and the sandwiches were too. And the food was delivered one half hour early. Zappia's deli is now my go-to in Summit for a solid lunch/wrap. I've been there twice, and both times, their offerings were spot-on. I've had the Chicken Caesar wrap, and my wife had the chicken cutlet with sweet peppers on a round roll. Both were really good: fresh and hot. The place itself has tables inside, so you can dine and relax. Chips galore. It's a BIT pricey, but honestly, for the quality of a meal you get, it's well worth it. Really friendly staff, great soup offerings, and they also offer breakfasts and a big coffee bar. read more
