This small family run diner is both quick and the food is delicious! Last time I got the huevos rancheros and it was like having nachos for breakfast, I thought how could one complain. This time wasn't completely the same it seemed rushed and it didn't come with this awesome green salsa they had last time. There isn't a ton of seating for weekend traffic but it is very well run. The ambiance is not very private but cozy. The staff is super pleasant and patient. Best to go during non peak hours but I would come back. read more

I've come to this place several times with friends or family and I can't say it's too special. The food isn't bad, but it's not great. Though to be fair, I usually get French toast or pancakes or things of that sort. The Belgium waffle though taste decent with fruits. Service here is decent, they check up on you if you want anything. Nothing too unusual. The ambiance or feeling when dining in is fine. It just seems like a restaurant, unfortunately I can't say I feel very at home though. It's not that big of a place and because it's usually busy, it's always crowded. read more

Now this is a great diner! After trying three others in the NYC we finally found one that knows what they are doing! So many great items it amazes me they can keep such a variety on the menu. Loved the Manhattan clam chowder on a cold day, followed by a truly homemade veggie burger with a basket of sweet potato fries. Nice presented with mini baskets of fries. Service was on point. We were there the other day. We were in a hurry due to the train schedule. They told us to sit anywhere and got a menu, but the waiter never came back. They did not even give us water while we waited, we waited at least 15 minutes, so we walked out since another person was getting frustrated. Atmosphere: It's not a huge metallic diner, nor is it big at all. It's located in the heart of Maplewood. There is plenty of street parking, but like any downtown, you might need to park and walk. The inside is modest with several booths and a few tables, as well as a small bar. Coffee: The coffee was brewed hot and fresh. I have no complaints. The waitress refilled it several times. Food: I wasn't sure what I was in the mood for. The Maple Leaf Diner has everything from breakfast, to lunch, and dinner options. On the specials, they had split pea soup listed which is one of my favorite soups. When I ordered, they were out. I ultimately went with a BLT which I have no complaints with.  It was packed full. Service: The waitress was friendly, and our food came out fast. It was a positive experience. Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back? I liked the Maple Leaf Diner, and it was a positive experience. It's not a large diner, but it's a great local small town. There is plenty to do in Maplewood, so it's fun to spend a few hours there. read more

Extra cost Loved the people, loved the food, what I didn't love was the extra cost for using a charge card. I own my small business and will not make that discrimination between those who pay cash and those who don't. I never ask when I stop in or make a reservation but when I find out, upon our arrival, it's the last time we frequent the establishment. The extra high cost being added, isn't even the cost the establishments are paying for the charge & if it is your being ripped off by the merchant services being used. There are many restaurants that don't charge the extra cost. I hope you reconsider.. we'd love to come back some day. read more

Very conveniently located in downtown Maplewood, and the inside gives that classic diner feel. Our table got nachos to share, which were messy but overall pretty good. My meal was the veggie burger which was meh. Patty was falling apart and didn't have much flavor. I also didn't love the fries. My biggest complaint was the prices. After spending the morning biking around Maplewood, we were hungry for some breakfast or brunch! Unfortunately, the restaurant scene at 10am on a Saturday in Maplewood is slim pickings. We figured "it's NJ, we can't go wrong with a diner!".... great decision! We were seated immediately and the place was super crowded and many folks looked like regulars. We both ordered omelettes, I created my own (great options!) and had to add a side order of the waffle fries... which were great by the way... and my boyfriend had the Mexican omelette with home fries and rye toast. We both liked the food and the portions were huge, very American. Service started out great but then he forgot about us after our plates were cleared so we ended up sitting for 15 minutes waiting for the check. This is place is exactly what an NJ diner should be. They have Breakfast all day. No extra frills or fancy menu items are necessary.

Stopped in here for a late breakfast on Friday after some morning appointments. Overall my experience was fine. Nothing blew me away as being particularly delicious or exciting. The menu is limited and a bit on the pricey side. Initially looking at the menu it doesn't seem pricey, but they don't offer large breakfast platters the way most other diners in the area do, so you need to add things like a short stack, sausage, bacon, etc. a la carte, which can drive the price up. The service was painfully slow. The front of house staff included our server, a hostess who was doubling as a server, one bus boy, and a manager or owner who sat at the bar most of the time and only got up to work the register. This should have been more than enough staff to cover the 7 or 8 tables of customers. I often saw our server and busboy sitting at the bar and it took forever to order, and then for our simple, boring, regular, everyday, diner fare to come out. Seriously, we ordered cottage cheese with fruit and a Western Omelette to split. That took about 20 minutes to come out. Finally, while the omelette was fine, it was tender and moist and the veggies were nice, they used American Cheese. I am not a fan of American cheese on anything other than a good burger, it has a very chemically, over-processed, not-very-fresh taste. Usually when I order Western Omelettes they come with Cheddar (at least in my experience). They should have at least offered me a choice or put on the menu that it will come with American cheese. I guess that is partially my fault for not thinking to ask, but I still don't like it. I will come back if I am in Maplewood and want a quick diner lunch, but will not go out of my way to get it. read more

This was my first visit to enjoy dinner at this diner. Besides the regular dinner menu which my friend picked a delicious appetizer of stuffed mushrooms, I looked at the $10 evening specials. My dinner came with a large garden salad, and my main course was the Odd Couple. Choice of how I wanted potato and vegetables came with stuffed fish with crabmeat, and stuffed chicken with spinach and feta cheese. I thought I was in a fine dining restaurant, and our waitress was so personable. She told us she was spoiled by the good food there. We ordered Thanksgiving dinner from the Maple Leaf to try something different. The turkey , soup, potatoes, yams, etc were super delicious. The food was ready on time and the portions were incredibly generous. The service was wonderful and they helped us bring everything out to our car. I met a co-worker for breakfast there on a Monday morning. It's located right in the heart of downtown Maplewood. It's a nice, quaint, little restaurant and doesn't look like the standard diner. I had the banana pancakes with a side of sausage and coffee. You have the option of two or three pancakes. I chose the three. The pancakes were medium to large and had plenty of bananas to make me happy. The sausage consisted of two fat links which were very tasty. As a coffee snob, I would say the coffee was decent. The service was very good and friendly. Prices were very reasonable. There is street parking if you are lucky. read more

Just went here for the first time today. Other reviewers are right about the little kids--lots of them!--but we have a two-year old ourselves so that's a plus for us. I'm pretty picky about breakfast omelettes and of the 5-6 diners I've been to in NJ so far, I thought this was the best one so far. Also I like that the home fries have onions sautéed in with them, just like grandma used to make them. Wife got the oatmeal, which she said was good, but hey, how hard is oatmeal? Service was prompt but a bit perfunctory, perhaps because it was busy. We got there around 11:30 and were surprised there was no wait, but by the time we left at 12:15, 10-12 people were waiting for tables. The decor was also nice. Some might say that the 70's shabby look common in other diners is part of the appeal, but this place with its more updated, cleaner look was a relief to me. Maybe it's just me, but a diner located in an old building in a little downtown is just weird. I guess I am used to stand alone diners. I can live with the weirdness though. The decor was up to date, a little nicer than the traditional diners I'm used to living in NJ. We were waited on promptly. The waitress was not bubbling over with excitement or friendliness, maybe she was just tired. The menu is pretty extensive. I could have ordered a cheese steak on a roll, wrap or a panini. I am not a huge diner person, maybe that's standard these days, but I liked the variety. I ordered a chicken panini and it was quite tasty. The soup was included and I went for the matzo ball soup which was decent. It could be that I deprive myself from such naughty foods, but the waffle fries were delicious. I was able to leave with half a panini and half of my fries and I was full. Call me strange, but I like leftovers. I'll be back to try a different dish next time. I had THE greatest burger at the Maple Leaf recently. I consider myself a burger fan, and the $6.50 MOM burger (mozzarella, onions, mushrooms) was better than any burger I've had locally in a long time. Yummmm... Greatest blueberry silver dollar pancakes ever. The portions are generous even for hungry people, so be savvy when you order. On top of that, prices are cheap and service is fairly fast. Visited twice on a busy morning and even when the place is full, it's not loud or feels cramped. Ran into a colleague of mine there, and joined him for a quick bite and he and I both told the server we'd like our checks with our food so we could pay quickly and leave. Generally, service and over all manner was slow and seemingly almost unconcerned with our situation. To top it off, I asked for a simple tuna on white. I did not ask for it toasted, nor did I want it that way. It was brought to me toasted and I didn't have time to tell the waitress to bring it back and then get me another one.
