Now this is a great diner! After trying three others in the NYC we finally found one that knows what they are doing! So many great items it amazes me they can keep such a variety on the menu. Loved the Manhattan clam chowder on a cold day, followed by a truly homemade veggie burger with a basket of sweet potato fries. Nice presented with mini baskets of fries. Service was on point. Gluten free options were available. Ooh I forgot to mention they had a nice cole slaw for a side.

Atmosphere: It's not a huge metallic diner, nor is it big at all. It's located in the heart of Maplewood. There is plenty of street parking, but like any downtown, you might need to park and walk. The inside is modest with several booths and a few tables, as well as a small bar. Coffee: The coffee was brewed hot and fresh. I have no complaints. The waitress refilled it several times. Food: I wasn't sure what I was in the mood for. The Maple Leaf Diner has everything from breakfast, to lunch, and dinner options. On the specials, they had split pea soup listed which is one of my favorite soups. When I ordered, they were out. I ultimately went with a BLT which I have no complaints with.  It was packed full. Service: The waitress was friendly, and our food came out fast. It was a positive experience. Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back? I liked the Maple Leaf Diner, and it was a positive experience. It's not a large diner, but it's a great local small town. There is plenty to do in Maplewood, so it's fun to spend a few hours there.

Make your own omelette with multigrain toast and seasoned waffle fries

After spending the morning biking around Maplewood, we were hungry for some breakfast or brunch! Unfortunately, the restaurant scene at 10am on a Saturday in Maplewood is slim pickings. We figured "it's NJ, we can't go wrong with a diner!".... great decision! We were seated immediately and the place was super crowded and many folks looked like regulars. We both ordered omelettes, I created my own (great options!) and had to add a side order of the waffle fries... which were great by the way... and my boyfriend had the Mexican omelette with home fries and rye toast. We both liked the food and the portions were huge, very American. Service started out great but then he forgot about us after our plates were cleared so we ended up sitting for 15 minutes waiting for the check. No concerns here though, we weren't in a rush!

This is place is exactly what an NJ diner should be. They have Breakfast all day. No extra frills or fancy menu items are necessary.

Spot Diner - French Toast

This weekend I decided to finally check it out. Spot Diner is located in the middle of a block, sandwiched between other store fronts. A blue awning is set over glass windows in the front. The doorway is a bit awkward, but when you get in you'll see plenty of booths and regular tables to sit at. Even better, you can sit at a counter to the left, one of my favorite features of any diner. I wound up sitting at a booth and it was at an odd time (around 4PM) so it was not crowded. The waitress was there very quickly and she was very nice. The host was cool too. No issues at all with service. The interior of Spot Diner has clearly been renovated in recent time. You can tell at one time it probably looked more like a classic diner but since then the interior has been painted blue and grey (giving off a Greek restaurant vibe) and there are some nice paintings hanging on the walls. I was really there just for a snack so I wound up ordering French Toast (which was still available at this hour). It came out quickly and it was good! One of the challenges with French Toast at any restaurant cooking it thoroughly while not drying it out. Fortunately they did a great job here The outer edge had a nice bit to it while the middle was chewy and cooked properly. Butter and syrup were of course provided on the side. I enjoyed my visit to Spot and I hope to come back for a full, proper breakfast one day!

This little cozy "spot" has fulfilled, satisfied and accommodated us every single time!!…read more I may have written a review but not sure my most recent experience- the most eventful yet. I like and enjoy Maplewood, its people , culture and food - as well as its beautiful tree- lined streets , parks and coffee shops. On this particular day, I had the honor of Elizabeth Summer companionship (my beloved morkie). We walked and had coffee and walked some more but then got caught in a thunder- lightening storm! Shane on me for not looking up the weather. Thankfully, I was graciously welcomed into "spot" and when I asked if my furry friend was too, they didn't hesitate. I'll be honest, everything we've ordered has been to our liking / sadly- not this day. It's ok though - they didn't want to charge me buy I did ask for an additional order and made sure I tipped the very sweet young man attending me.. "us"! I will gladly continue to visit the spot - I have enjoyed every other meal - oh and their cream of turkey- fills my"chicken-soup with rice" craving with turkey soul! Enjoy!! Buen provecho!!!

BEDBUGS in the Booths at Millburn Diner -- and an Owner Who Yells at Customers- STAY AWAY!…read more Quick Summary * Sat in a fabric booth and found multiple bedbugs crawling in the cushions within minutes * Reported it to staff -- no manager came over and nothing was done * We were moved to another table and still charged the full bill * Called the next day -- manager promised a call back but never did * Spoke with the owner later -- he yelled, accused us of harassment, refused to address the issue, and hung up I'm sharing this so other families in Millburn know what we experienced. Date of visit: February 28 Party: Family dinner including our 20-month-old daughter My family and I live in Millburn and try to support local restaurants whenever we can, which makes this experience even more disappointing. Within about five minutes of sitting down in a fabric booth, someone in our party noticed a bug crawling on the seat. Based on what we observed at the time, it appeared to be a bedbug. When we checked behind the booth cushions more closely, we saw several more, at least 8 crawling along both sides of the booth. Seeing multiple insects that were confirmed to be bedbugs where customers are sitting and eating was extremely alarming. We immediately got up and asked to be moved. In hindsight we should have left immediately, but we had already ordered and felt awkward walking out. The staff moved us to a table in the center of the restaurant with wooden chairs. We clearly told our server exactly what we had found in the booth. Nothing further happened. * No manager came over * No one inspected the booth * No one followed up with us * No one offered any acknowledgment beyond a quick apology from the server When the meal ended, we were handed the full bill as if nothing had happened. The next day I called the restaurant to make sure management knew what had occurred. The manager told me he had not heard anything about it and said he would call me back "ASAP." That call never came. Two days later I called again and asked to speak with a manager. This time the owner came to the phone. Instead of addressing the issue or even listening, he immediately became hostile and started yelling. He accused me of harassing him and his employees and said he was going to do nothing about it. After shouting at me, he abruptly hung up the phone. I have never experienced a business owner respond this aggressively or unprofessionally to a legitimate customer concern. For transparency, we documented what we observed at the time and contacted the restaurant directly the following day to give management the opportunity to address the issue. Based on what we experienced -- both the insects we observed in the seating area and the response from management -- this situation felt completely unacceptable. If you are dining in Millburn, there are many other options. DO NOT GO TO THE MILLBURN DINER!

The potatoes were not cut, they just looked.. shredded and mashed and overall unappealing. While my eggs were cooked well, the English muffins in my avocado benedict were burnt, and the cold tomatoes did not go well w/ the hot dish. The sweet potato fries were crispy, but the fries were not fluffy on the inside, and some pieces were burnt. Finally, while our server was very friendly and kind, the cashier (not sure if he's the manager) was very clearly not in a good mood. When our group walked up to the register w/ our separate checks, he expressed in an annoyed tone how he didn't like dealing w/ separate checks. After he rushed to settle our payments, we started walking out of the restaurant, when the guy asked us to come back inside bc someone did not pay their check. Inside, we all showed our credit card transactions to prove that we all paid. The cashier continued to insist that someone did not pay. In the end, apparently, the cashier just accidentally charged one of us w/ the wrong ticket. So all of this confusion was for nothing. I would not recommend this place, nor would I come again.

Everything in my previous review still stands - it's still an interesting hybrid of family restaurant, sport bar and lounge. Since my previous review I've had some of the food and it's as expected - average to a bit below average fitting for how I viewed the place before having food. I've managed to try a burger here and was disappointed. I asked for medium-well, it was beyond well done. Dry and not very well seasoned at that. The fries were unacceptable. Plentiful but I'm almost positive these are Ore-Ida frozen fries. The bar pie was also pretty sad. It's about 4 medium slices of thin crust pizza with average sauce flavor. It seemed a bit burnt. I also got a plate of buffalo wings to share with my buddies. Again average. It wouldn't be so bad but the prices are pretty high. All of the things I've tried were $15+ and they ranged from not good to average. The bartenders do put a lot of effort in interacting with you and do well keeping drinks going but the food and the experience is a bit dicey.
