I understand the varied reviews about the service at the Maple Leaf. I've found that at lunch time the staff seems to be friendlier. They know exactly what their regulars will order and there is a lot more smiling. At other times of day, service is rather perfunctory. Wow! Now this IS a diner. Went here for brunch today with my husband & son, and were warmly greeted by the waitress, and were given a booth. I had the Farmer's Omelette, hubby had fried eggs with bacon & home fries, and we got an order of the traditional French Toast (not Challah bread, which was offered as well). Everything we ate was suburb. My omelette was filled with veggies, cheddar, diced ham & bacon, but not too much, which made for a nice, light entree, not at all greasy. The home fries were the way they should be, sauteed, with caramelized onion and a light touch of oil, not dry and bland like many other diners have. And the French Toast...not at all eggy, which I hate, but rather have a slight eggnog batter taste to them, which were incredible, cooked to a buttery, toasty-yet soft perfection...mmmmm!! They were also super nice and accommodating, both to us and my toddler, which goes a looooong way with me. Really great place, and the surrounding town/area of Maplewood is super charming and picturesque to walk around and see the quaint, cute shops. read more

I hadn't been to this place in years when I went this past friday. I used to come here all the time when I was younger for breakfast, I remember them having amazing pancakes. This might have been the first time I ever had lunch here, and it was pretty good. I ordered the turkey burger. The place was pretty crowded, and, like Hilary M. said, family central. Standard diner, there was something special in the "4-egg breakfast special" i ordered; I think it was the bacon. The wifey concurred it was noisey and she had her seat kicked more than once. I forget how many times it actually was because we went to/enjoyed the Maplewood Movie House right around the corner (or whatever it's called). We saw The Butler. read more

What I like the most about Maple Leaf is how friendly, attentive and efficient the staff is. The refills are quick, the check is never wrong, they ask if things are fine without being intrusive, and they truly do their best to contain the children running around. I give them massive props for that alone. Now to the ambience. This is a no frills kind of establishment, the decor has been outdated for years, but that becomes irrelevant given the affordable prices and the home-made quality of their menu. We ended up at the Maple Leaf only because the line at the Parkwood Diner met us at the door and my bff didn't want to wait, so we drove over to this place. So we were in town for SHU Family Weekend, but we didn't book tickets in time for the on-campus pancake breakfast. What to do? We cast a wider net and found ourselves in the village of Maplewood, specifically the Maple Leaf Diner. For a family of six the bill came to be very reasonable. There were pancakes! There were waffles! There was hash! I had the eggs benedict and I'm still thinking about them, weeks later. The waitstaff was attentive despite the restaurant being very busy. Also, plenty of parking nearby for out-of-towners like us. (At least at breakfast.) Here's hoping we can come again soon! read more

The Maple Leaf, which has stood in the same downtown storefront location forever, isn't your typical Jersey diner. Sure, the menu is broad and many of the trappings of a classic diner are present, but the absence of chrome, the storefront location and the heavy representation of fresh, scratch-made dishes elevate it a step above. Prices are generally lower than most of the area's diners, although portion sizes tend to be smaller. Friday is seafood night, and the choices are appealing; execution follows the "nothing more, but nothing less" principle-- what you read on the menu is what you'll find on the plate. The waitstaff is purely efficient, not lacking in attentiveness when-needed, but not evidencing warmth or personality. This rift between tasty food at reasonable prices and near-mechanical execution and service is, to paraphrase a fellow Yelper, "just weird." The 1-2 additional stars that price-value have clearly earned are lost on the sterile and almost unwelcoming service standard, and the impression that this "grand dame" of a local institution isn't likely to change. Enjoy the Maple Leaf for what it is, and enjoy the company of your dining partners (or a newspaper or good book). read more

This is the go to place for breakfast in Maplewood. Be prepared for Romper Room, as the place is always crawling with kids. I prefer going later in the day for a late lunch when it's somewhat quieter. The food here is always really good - I haven't had anything other than standard diner fare, but from what I hear, the dinner specials are also quite good and not necessarily what you would expect from a diner. The doctor's choice omelet (with egg whites) is a great, healthy choice and they also have a pretty good turkey wrap - served in an everything flavored wrap with a kick to it. There are always sides and it seems like whenever I order it becomes a three course meal (which they will alter to your liking). This was my default restaurant when I don't feel like going far but has become my restaurant of choice. The value for the price is excellent. Dinner selections come with a salad (large Greek or traditional) or soup. Interesting soup selections and vegetables which I look forward to; not just brocoli everyday as has become the case in most places. Can have breakfast dinner time but can't resist the dinner entrees. The meatloaf and chicken pot pie are recommended but also the daily specials. Interesting desserts too, had banana bread pudding the other day. Large portions and two can have dinner for under $25. The service is exemplary and friends. My favorite is the lamb shank with orzo and I would give a 4 star for that dish. Other dishes are okay. I'm highly annoyed, I'm a teacher in the district and I usually come here for breakfast with my colleagues, recently I started doing take-out for breakfast. This was my second time coming alone and I came through the door speaking with my best friend on the phone,on my headphones. I started to look at the menu when the waitress whose usually there asked me if I was ready to order, I politely decline and told her I wanted to look at the menu. When I was finally ready to order, I had stop speaking to my friend on the phone and order two eggs, when surprisingly she rudely replied "What do you mean!?" I was taken aback by the question, because I thought I was clear what I wanted. I repeated what I said, and she did the same thing and RUDELY told me "well what do you want, over easy, with toast, with bacon what do you want!". Even my friend could hear her on my phone and was asking "who was speaking to me in that tone". Of course she had every right to ask to specify what I wanted, but not in that rude tone. As a teacher, I'm always prepared from attitude, dis-interest, arguments and debates with my students ,but to try to control my temper early in the morning with an actual ADULT is disheartening and I will no longer go back. I go to the village area EVERYDAY and have been a good customer to all the restaurants there for 2 years now. I'll be going to Bagel Chateau instead and will politely decline to attend there with my colleagues. read more

Given this place a chance time and time again, and while the food is fair, the service is consistently atrocious. Have seen servers sit at tables, play with their phones and sip on their beverages before reluctantly deciding to tend to new walk-ins 10 minutes later. I've also seen servers carry on full conversations with each other in front of guests patiently waiting to give their orders. Overall, I think an overhaul is in order. For what I've seen, it's just a few servers sinking the ship too. read more

Several family members joined us and we're all impressed by: 1) Huge amount of choices from matzah ball soup to stuffed shrimp to organic salad to breakfast all day; 2) Incredibly reasonable prices; 3) We can hear each other talk - not noisy at all; 4) comfortable booths or chairs and table; 5) Really nice staff. read more
