Back in April, before a flight to India, I was craving some classic American breakfast before immersing myself in traditional Indian food for 2.5 weeks. I've gotta say- this place hit the spot, and I'm excited to visit again in the near future. My girlfriend and I stopped by around 10 AM on a Thursday. Parking can be a little tricky since the place is popular and the lot is small, but street parking is usually available nearby. The interior gives off classic old-school diner vibes, with vintage pots and pans hanging as decor. There's also a ton of seating--more than you'd expect just from looking at the parking lot. We were promptly seated, handed menus, and had our order taken quickly. For our meal, I got the Chicken Fried Steak with a side of pancakes, and my girlfriend ordered a short stack with whipped cream and strawberries. We also got a side of lingonberry butter to try with the pancakes. The food came out quickly and was excellent. I'd never had chicken fried steak before, but I'm glad this was my first--this acts as a great benchmark. The steak was tender, the crust was nice and crispy, and the gravy (while just a bit under-seasoned) was still tasty--nothing a little hot sauce and pepper couldn't fix. The portions were generous too--I barely needed any food during the first leg of my flight. The pancakes, both mine and my girlfriend's, were perfect: fluffy, moist, and delicious. The lingonberry butter was a great addition and paired really well with them. Service was friendly and prompt throughout our experience, and the value for what you get is solid. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at the Millbrae Pancake house! I love finding old school diners and hidden gems, and this is definitely on my list of favorites here in the Bay Area. Looking forward to stopping by here again soon! read more

Played hookie and went here on a Monday around 10:30am! Small Parking lot was full but was lucky, 1 spot was available. We were seated right away for 2. A guy came to take our drink order and we asked about the menu. He quickly stated he was not our server and to kindly wait. We ordered with our waitress and food came out fairly fast! About 10 mins! We did the chicken and waffles (8/10) waffle was kinda cold but still good, chicken was yummy! 1 large pieces and 3 small ones. Sky got the chicken fried steak and eggs with Swedish pancakes. Busy default dinner spot for the community! Was very busy for brunch and they aren't lacking on space or seating. Don't be discouraged, the line goes quick! Staff were great and bubbly. Portions are adequate and they had a large amount of specials for the fall. They even had pumpkin items for fall! I was surprised how small and thin their waffle is. I ordered a pecan waffle for $14.50. The pecan wasn't even glazed nor cooked with the pancake, it was a dry pecan with powder on top of a thin and small waffle. On the other side of the menu they have brown waffle comes with 2 eggs and a choice of 2 bacon or 2 sausages for the same price. I mean if you order just a waffle, you would expect itll be thinner, and fluffier but it was not. I understand there's inflation going on but man I think they can do better. Im not the type of person who would complain, I really wanted to talk to the manager but my brother inlaw stopped me and said that it'll be the last time were dinning in. The server even said that if that's what's in the menu then thats what were getting. While the food was great, the service has really declined over the past decade. Don't let the crowds fool you, you'll get in and seated pretty quickly, an aspect I have always loved about this place. We received our drinks quickly this morning and I appreciate this as coffee was very much needed. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs and my partner ordered the steak and eggs. About ten to fifteen mins later I received my plate. We waited and waited for my partner's and eventually we were able to wave down the server. We asked about his steak and egg order and she went to check with the kitchen, didn't even notice his soda was empty and needed a refill. She came back to inform us the order got mixed up with another table that was already served his steak and eggs order and they needed to restart making his. Again, she didn't offer a refill and quickly went off to assist others. It took forever until she came back with his order, another 20mins at most. She was about to leave when my partner asked if he could have a refill. Minutes later she returned with coffee, when his soda was clearly empty to which he was referring to. He asked if he could refill his soda and she was like "you'd like that refilled also?"... um yes, it only makes sense, no? Anyway.. it's unfortunate that what once was five stars to me is now three because of this experience. I hope they do a better job next time around instead of rushing to help so many people at once rather than taking the time to make sure they are efficient. read more

It's an institution. It's old school as far as menu items / options. You won't find non-fat soy lattes here, for example! It's a little dark inside for my taste. Even the high ceilings didn't take away the feeling of being in a tight space. Tables and booths are closely set together. I marvel at the servers who manage to negotiate the limited aisle spaces. There are plenty of servers and they are assisted by runners so that the food comes out of the kitchen in a timely manner. When I saw crepes done German style (with lemon and powdered sugar), I was instantly ready to order. What I received wasn't really like a crepe, it was more of a very thin pancake, with the pancake's kind of taste and texture. It was yummy, but not really what I was expecting. I also ordered a side of fruit, which was melon. Not a berry in sight. We were dining with our Adored Grandson and his lovely girlfriend. We hadn't seen them in many months and were excited to be spending time together. Late morning on a Friday the restaurant was very full, with the noise level to go along with it. We conversed the best we could, but right after we finished our food we settled the bill and moved to a coffee place to sit and talk without the high volume around us. I first heard of Millbrae Pancake House years ago, but have only just started making this a regular weekend pilgrimage. The restaurant has a pretty small parking lot, as well as outdoor seating. The interior reminds me of a lodge with lots of booth and table seating across two large rooms. The service here is very prompt, with someone asking if you'd like anything to drink. But don't order food from them ... your server will appear shortly afterwards to take your order. I always get the Bangers & Eggs breakfast, which comes with your choice of buttermilk or Swedish pancakes on the side. This meal is the only one I'll eat all day, as it fill me up perfectly! Afterward, the bill comes. What I really like is that I can pay at the table with my phone, something that's commonplace in Europe but is thankfully starting to catch on here in The States. The atmosphere is a little on the darker side, but still comfortable enough for a casual breakfast or brunch. Service is quick and efficient, and the staff is friendly, so you don't end up waiting long for food. I ordered the Combo 1 with Swedish pancakes. The pancakes are thin and soft, more like crepes, and they go well with syrup. The eggs were cooked nicely and the bacon had a good crisp without being overly greasy. Prices are very reasonable, and I like that they haven't raised them much over time, which makes it a solid value compared to a lot of other breakfast spots. A friend mentioned this spot so I had to try it. Tried calling first to grab a to go order bc I couldn't make modifications to my order online, I was told to come in and order. Kind of defeated my goal of ordering before hand so I wouldn't have to wait, but happy they could make the switch for me. I was able to sub out my eggs for hash browns, glory be! This location is totally a classic diner, and I do mean classic. From the sign outside to the vintage wallpaper in the back, it's like stepping into the 70s. The front of the restaurant was pretty tight as it was bustling with folks waiting to be seated. They conveniently have a waiting area outside but it was quite chilly on this am so most of us were huddled indoors. Plan for a wait, this is clearly a popular breakfast spot. At around 9a the parking lot was already packed. Now let's talk eats. I know this place is exceptionally good bc I didn't get to eat my food until I was back in my hotel and it had lost its freshness and was just above room temperature, and yall.... It was STILL delicious! I mean the waffle, hash browns and bacon still had crispness to it. The strawberries were fresh. The outdoor seating is pretty standard, but it has a refreshing vibe and plenty of shade due to the red umbrellas. Food: Southern Omelet & Swedish Pancakes With omelets, the ingredients typically blend together and are complimentary in taste/texture. With the Southern Omelet, it was more of a fried egg with hot links and bell peppers tossed in. I suppose it's a good thing you can taste each ingredient, but it's like you taste each component one at a time. As for the hash browns, these weren't as crispy as I had hoped they would be - it leaned more towards the soft/moist side. Moreover, the portion size is pretty small. The Swedish Pancakes were nice and light! Having the lingonberry butter there is a good addition - it reminds me of a cream cheese. Service: Good service overall, but if you're sitting outdoors then it can be a little challenging getting the attention of the wait staff since they're mostly indoors. It is unrecognizable by the food quality. I understand Covid had a big impact on everything but it is basically like an expensive ihop now. I cannot believe I haven't reviewed this place before. This place gets super crowded with a long wait and the parking lot gets filled up. Either come early or come between meal times. Everything on the menu is good, made to order and the way you like it. You cannot go wrong here. But it is a pancake house so you should at least try the pancakes. You can order them with a variety of toppings and there are different kinds of syrups on the table. My personal favorite is the lingonberry pancakes. Whenever I have out of town guests, I always bring them to MPH as a Bay Area must! Yes there's so many other brunch spots around the bay (plow, plain Jane, mamas, zazie, kitchen story, surisan, denicas, & pancake boy just to name a few of my faves) which might be more aesthetically pleasing, be instagram worthy, or include the latest food trends, but something about MPH always has me coming back. I've been coming here for over the last 20 years. I honestly keep coming back for the Swedish pancakes, well done hash browns, and omelettes. Portions have always been huge (even in this economy & egg crisis) and service is friendly every single time. It gets busy and there's usually a wait on the weekends, but it actually goes by quicker now these days with the outdoor seating after Covid. I've been to this restaurant a couple of times and it never disappoints ! Their Swedish pancakes are so delicious and have a tasty lingonberry spread! I recently came on a weekend for brunch and was surprised that the wait was not long at all. Occasionally it can get very busy at this location so expect to have a wait on busy brunch days. Service is always really kind and polite, and our waiter was extremely helpful and attentive! Ambience wise this place is busy with lots of families so expect a bit of noise. A huge highlight of the menu is definitely their Swedish pancakes and also their chicken and waffles. I genuinely think that the fried chicken is some of the tastiest in the Bay Area.
