This was my first time at a Mikuni. I'd heard good things about the one in Midtown Sacramento. They greeted me in Japanese (translation: Welcome to the House). I'm glad they seated me at the end of the sushi bar rather than in front of the chefs. The torch the chefs use for the mafia and pimp rolls gives off an unpleasant odor. Sitting at the end of the bar also gives you a good view of the large-screen TV sets. I didn't know what to order and decided to try their teriyaki chicken and California roll. I've had these dishes at many other sushi places and would be able to compare quality. Leo, the bartender, took my order. The California roll was just okay. I've had better at other Davis sushi bars. The teriyaki chicken was good. I'd give it a grade of B+. I'll try Mikuni one more time if I can go with someone who is familiar with the menu and knows what's good and not so good. read more

Mikuni, though a little on the loud side, is quite frankly some of the best sushi and sashimi you will find in Davis. A great bar, pretty reliable service, and anything from simple miso to the pepperfin tuna is sure to please. read more

I am a frequent lunch customer of Mikuni in Roseville and Fair Oaks - great food, upbeat atmosphere and very quick service. At the Davis location, while the menu is the same, the dinner service is a bit slower and (therefore) unappealing for a family with younger kids. read more

I eat a lot of sushi. As in, more than twice a week for the past few years. Is Mikuni the best I've ever had? Definitely not. But for its new location in Davis, it is hands down the best sushi you can get, IN DAVIS. As others have mentioned, Davis has a crapload of sushi joints. But for the most part, they are all pretty average, some a bit run down even. If you like bargain sushi, those places are great and easy on the wallet. What sets Mikuni apart from the rest is the fact that it is the ONLY semi-expensive sushi restaurant in town. Now, I'm not saying that pricier is necessarily better, but generally speaking, when you're willing to pay more for your food, the end result is a nicer looking restaurant with a "posher" ambience and higher quality food. Mikuni follows this trend. Davis was lacking a sushi restaurant targeted towards people who don't mind spending $40 for a sushi dinner, and now we finally have one! The draw of Mikuni is that you get very well decorated and flavorful rolls (see the pictures I posted), along with sashimi dishes that are more playful and unique than what you can typically get at a small family-owned bargain sushi joint. If you've never been here before, there are some dishes that are pretty much must-gets every time: Freaky Edamame, BBQ Albacore w/ both sauces, Black and White, Trainwreck roll, and the Incredible roll. Ordering those is usually enough for two people, and will run you about $70 after tax and tip. In my opinion, not too bad at all. Now onto the not so great stuff, and the reason why I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5. All the rolls pretty much taste the same. Sure, you can differentiate a bit by getting one that's spicy, and one that isn't, but that's about as far as you can go. The reason for this is in their sauces. Their sauce is what sets them apart from the bargain sushi joints: it gives their rolls a heavier taste, and makes it feel like you're eating something more than just rice wrapped around some meat and veggies. However, they pretty much lather the same two sauces (red sauce and white sauce) on all of their rolls. So when you order four or five sets of rolls for a big group, you generally won't be able to tell much difference between them. The other thing that attributed to this place getting 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's missing some of the awesome dishes you can get at the Mikuni in Sacramento. Namely, the Road Kill Salad, Oysters on the Half Shell, Carmen Roll (the true Carmen Roll, not the shrimp version they have at the Davis location), and the Dental Roll (arguably the best desert roll ever?). I sometimes find myself driving out to Sacramento just so I can get those dishes. Don't get me wrong, I'm really, REALLY glad that Davis finally got a Mikuni, but it's a shame that it doesn't have the full selection. Overall, I'm still a big fan of this place. No other sushi restaurant in Davis even compares. But in the bigger scheme of things, Mikuni in Davis still falls behind sushi restaurants in the bigger towns. But hey, for a small town like Davis where the number of "fancier" restaurants is literally in the single digits, Mikuni is one of my staple places to grab dinner. read more

Hit or miss usually with the food but overall good. Friendly staff. I love their peter 2 roll every time though :D

Richard Pro here with another review. I'm a harsh critic of food in general so let's get down to it. We had a reservation for maybe 12 people here and we ended up waiting 45 minutes extra. That was a really bad move on their part considering there's about $300 on the line. They tried offering us edamame on the house...but honestly, we're here for sushi, not dry string beans, and no one took any. Free sodas would have been a better idea. We sat down and ordered. Mikuni's is expensive and service is painfully slow. Even though we sat down at 8:45 our food took maybe 45 minutes to come. What we got looked very nice but portions were barely passable. I ordered 2 rolls and that cost me around $18 and I was 10% full. The bento boxes seem to be the best value--$15 for around 10 slices of chicken. This restaurant clearly caters to white people and families. It's fancy and professional, thereby influencing the price and wait time, definitely the wrong place for college students to stuff themselves. So why 3 stars? I'd eat here if I had no budget. The restaurant looks nice, service is good, and the rolls are pretty good. Can't come back though because I don't have that kind of money or time. read more

This summer I had two families from Germany visit. They were excited when I invited them to go eat Sushi. Even in the land of Schnitzel, Sushi has become very popular. After the first meal everybody was ready to move to Davis. They insisted to dine at Mikunis several more times during their stay. The quality and freshness of the fish, the friendliness of the staff and the talent of the chefs made it a truely memorable dining experience. They even downloaded the new Mikuni App so they can dream about the great dishes from afar. read more

My husband and I go to Mikuni quite often. We started at the one in midtown, but now we go to the Mikuni in Davis (because we live in Davis). We've discovered that we need to go a little bit earlier than we usually like to avoid the college scene (a plus if you're in college, a minus if you're like us, which is married with kids so Mikkuni in midtown is actually a bit better scene for us). We like all of the Sushi chefs, and enjoy talking to them (we always sit at the sushi bar because of that). They remember us, and call us by our first names. The fish is always fresh, and they are happy to do special orders for us. read more

This is a typical Americanized Japanese Sushi restaurant. I would recommend their bento instead of their sushi. I think that their sashimi are fairly good, they are not using Japaneses rice to cook their sushi. Their bento box are quite good, much better than their sushi. read more

Slow service. spoiled raw fish. I had chirashi bowl and it was awful. Very limited amount of sashimi. I think it's more like a "fake" Japanese restaurant. Very expensive with such quality of food. Yuck... read more

This is by far the best sushi we've been able to find in Davis. True, it's not the cheapest by any means, but with sushi you usually get what you pay for, and the quality at an all-you-can-eat sushi place just isn't going to do it for me. Mikuni has a good selection of rolls, including several interesting and tasty vegetarian rolls, along with some specialty mixed drinks and a full bar. This is definitely our go-to sushi restaurant in Davis. read more

We used to love coming here and loved their veggieten roll, age dashi tofu, and freaky edamame. The last time we came, however, we were very disappointed with the food. The veggieten roll was smaller than usual and the rice was not well packed. The age dashi tofu was actually the second batch the new cook made because our server said he burned the first one and the second batch was undercooked. The freaky edamame was good, but the portion size was so much smaller than past visits. The server was nice, but since the food was so disappointing, we won't be going back. I always thought the menu lacked vegetarian options anyway. Another sushi place we really like has more than 6 different vegetarian rolls that are really tasty and Mikunis only has 3. Mikunis is also more expensive. read more

The best quality sushi in davis! Little pricey i alway like their incredible oh its so good

While their sushi isn't really unique, it's consistent and good. Their lunch specials are big portions, so they're great value. Their service is always wonderful and the atmosphere is fun outside. I haven't ever sat inside because it's quite loud. Either way, they're great. read more

Nice atmosphere but definitely on the pricier side. The portions can also be very tiny depending on what you order so some people end up spending a lot more than they want if they want a full meal. The food flavor is also more "American" then the traditional authentic Japanese food compared to other Japanese restaurants in Davis such as Zen Toro. read more

Favorite sushi place :) food comes out quick and the staff is really friendly! I've never had a problem seating either, but I've only gone in with a group of two or three. read more

My favorite spot for sushi in Davis! The servers are super nice and friendly, and so are the bar staff. I got talked into a Sake bomb, which was fun. The best part is the fresh fish and creative rolls. If I had to choose, I think Mikuni Elk Grove has slightly better sushi but this one has much nicer staff. Yes, Mikuni is a little expensive, but after I got food poisoning after eating at another Davis sushi place, I won't compromise. My favorite sever is super bubbly and helpful, so if you ask for Tiana she will take care of you. (Although last time they wouldn't honor my request to have her for my party). read more

This was my first time eating here & we had lunch on the patio. The bento boxes, sushi lunch specials & kids meals were all very good tasting & good value. All in all we are looking forward to trying more of their sushi in the future. read more

I don't know what I would do if Davis didn't have this restaurant. I'm a big fan of sushi and they always seem to have fresh fish here. My favorite thing is the saw salad and the BBQ tuna. So yummy! Love coming out here for date night! read more

Really fresh fish. Loved the cucumber cocktail, the Fiesta Roll and Marilyn Munroll. Service a little slow, but they were very crowded.

Definitely the best sushi place in Davis. There is not any other Japanese restaurants that provide better sushis and sashimis than this place. Price is acceptable because the quality is okay. read more

Reliably good. When I crave sushi in Davis, this is my go to place. I like to come here for the lunch chirashi (assorted sashimi in a rice bowl). Service is generally good and the place has a nice modern atmosphere. read more

I've been here tons of times and never had a bad experience. Great staff, great food! Yeah, it can get a little pricey, but that's to be expected. I love going during their happy hour and getting a lot of small plates. Overall, they have a large menu to choose from and their sashimi is always fresh! read more

The fish melts in your mouth, but I've definetly had better with seasoning and quality. It's okay for the price. The service is great, but it's not amazing and not the best I've ever had. read more

We've been to the one in Roseville and Lake Tahoe. The one in Davis is by far the best. All of the restaurants are well above average. However, Davis has the special fish and nigiri at a good price. For instance, we opted for Japan Uni, King Salmon, Salt Water eel, Ocean Trout, Flounder, Ankimo, Toro, Ama Ebi, and Saba. All were great and fresh. The ginger is the real stuff. In summary, a great go to sushi place if you are driving on route 80 or 50 to Tahoe or wherever. The pricing is very competitive relative to other top sushi places. If you are looking for beer and rolls, this is not the place to go. You need to order the specials of the day which they serve fresh. Ask for what's on the fish special or look for it at the front. Service can be slow due to the popularity. Plan to get there early to avoid the wait. Some time before 5 PM should work. read more

Really good sushi. Very Fresh. A little on the pricey side. The staff are great at service also we got our dishes super quick.

We adore Mikuni's! This review is long over due. The staff is amazing Mike and Kim always welcome us, remembering our names, making sure all of needs are met. Their support staff is always pleasant and delightful. The food is always superior and we love the shooters! We wanted to take a few minutes to thank the amazing team at Mikuni's for all the years of enjoyment. We look forward to seeing you all very soon! read more

Great spot. Love to eat here. Excellent fish. Cant beat the quality of the staff and the product. Love eating here every day.

We were visiting from the Bay Area and a friend recommended this place. Totally worth it and I'll visit every time I'm back in town! We got lucky with happy hour pricing. There was a bit of a wait on a Monday at 6:30 pm, that should tell you how popular this place is. We ordered a variety of happy hour specials, everything was fantastic but especially the zig zag hand rolls and seared tuna appetizer. Quality of the sushi was excellent and everything tasted fresh. Thanks for a great experience! read more

As much as I like their sushi, the price is quite steep for the portion size. And sadly, the food isn't quite as mind-blowing as the average rating suggests. Then again, there really aren't any good sushi spots in Davis, and this is at least solid in terms of quality. read more

Excellent Sushi place. Wonderful customer service and a great place to eat. The Chirashi was particularly good. Will definitely return.

So great! My husband and I love it, yes, its a bit more pricy than the Fuji sushi down the street, But, well you know what they say, Its QUALITY over Quantity!!!! and oh was it great! they have an appitizer called Pepper fin tuna, oh it is scrumptious!!! read more

Mikunis in Davis is an amazing Restaurant and Sushi Bar. The freshness and quality of fish is second to none. Kids and families are completely welcome and encouraged! If you are a long time sushi lover or it's your first time, the staff is extremely helpful with suggestions of what's right for you. The Hamachi Aburi stands alone in my opinion as the best "start" to your Sushi night! read more

Love Mikuni! Fun atmosphere, excellent, authentic food. Friendly and fun staff. Great bartenders! What more do you need?

What Chipotle has done with the burrito, In-n-Out to the burger, Mikuni has done to sushi. Basically mainstream sushi that is above average quality. What bothers me is the price you pay. I'd much rather go to a sushi buffet and have my fill. I will only be coming here for happy hour. I have to say that the service here is fantastic though. read more

The space is on the smaller side compared to the other mikunis in Elk Grove and downtown and Arden, but pretty much the same menu. Yes, it Americanized sushi, but it's oh so good! read more

I was very impressed with all aspects of this restaurant: The restaurant is clean and inviting. The staff are extremely friendly (we weren't going to eat here, but our year old liked the outside and once we entered, they wooed him with tattoos and friendly jibes-,and thus us). We were seated as soon as we decided to eat there. Drinks were ordered and received within 5 minutes. Our orders were taken and delivered perfectly, at the right temperature, within 15 minutes. I thought the pricing was fair. $9.50 for a two item Bento box that included a green salad, cucumber salad, and rice. I got the stir fry veggies and teriyaki beef. Everything was excellent and my soon liked it, too. All-around excellent restaurant! read more

I love Mikuni's is a fun place to take your family! I like to sit outside and I like the bento boxes! the kids meals are very very affordable! wish they had the bento boxes in the evening as well! but I really love the marshmallows that you can get for your birthday because they are the best marshmallows in the world bye! read more

The food is great but the prices suck. I just had a $40 lunch because I wanted something more than grilled fish and rice. I ordered the saba shioyaki (grilled mackerel) and got about 3-4 oz of fish, nicely grilled. Unfortunately, it hadn't been deboned, so I had to try to dig out teeny, tiny little fishy bones with my fingers and my chopsticks before I could try to enjoy it. I also got seaweed salad, excellent but a little oily, and some mixed tempura. The tempura serving was quite large and they gave me an extra serving of white rice. There were about 5 pieces of shrimp and multiple vegetables (broccoli, mushroom, yam, potato (undercooked) and carrot), The waiter was attentive, although he had the unhappy habit of asking me how things were going when I had just taken a bite and my mouth was full. Over all if you have a deep wallet, the food is very good but I won't be ordering the mackerel again. Pity, because it had a nice flavor but too many fish bones! read more

We travel from napa to Davis for this place. Prior to their Davis location we drove to Roseville once with friends to get it. Always new additions to the menu. Service is always friendly. Food never disappoints. Last night entered and it was packed with a wait. Got us in 20 minutes and still served fairly quickly. A few reviews have hammered that it's not spectacular but for the price paid and all. I would disagree. read more
