The following occurred a while ago but I just have to get the experience off my chest. I was very excited to see a chocolate shop open in my neighborhood as I am a long-time pastry professional with a gigantic sweet tooth. Not long after they opened I was walking by and saw their gigantic sign outside- you know the one I'm talking about- NUTELLA LATTE. Uhh, yum! My husband said he would wait outside with the baby while I went in and ordered. "I'll have the Nutella latte please." "The WHAT?" the lady behind the counter looked at me as if I had two or three heads. "Um... the Nutella latte." She shook her head at me, defiant. "The one you have advertised outside?" I offered (the sign is huge, letters must be a foot tall). "Do you want it hot or cold?" she barked. "Ummmm hot." She turned and started puttering around... and she started steaming the milk. She steamed and steamed and steamed. I kid you not, she steamed that milk for a good 10 minutes. I'm not a coffee professional but I order and drink a lot of coffee and it usually doesn't take that long to steam milk for a latte. My husband meanwhile entered the shop and we looked at each other, thinking what the heck is going on back there? I examined every piece of chocolate, every gift (post-seasonal chocolates to be had a good price here!). She steamed. I read the entire story of the owner (pretty cool). The baby started fussing. She was still steaming. It's was fine, I was curious about the shop anyway and really wanted to figure out exactly which of chocolates I wanted to try. Alas, I never got a chance to try them because the lady unceremoniously rang me up before I could even order any. That's right, she didn't even try to sell me any chocolate. I would have been more insistent on ordering but having some chocolate-making experience myself I could tell that the quality of the pieces were actually not great (saw a lot of pieces that I would not have sold much less put on display- cracked, chipped, etc.) so my faith in the fabulous corner chocolate and latte shop was quickly waning. Being an avid chocolate lover, I decided to pay a visit to this newly-opened location today! It is a small candy shop with a large selection of chocolate. Their gift sets are super cute and reasonably priced. I also appreciate this location a lot more than other candy/chocolate shops inside the Glendale Galleria, because this is a quick and convenient stop. Customer service is absolutely amazing - I was immediately greeted with a friendly smile, and the Armenian lady helping me out was very knowledgeable about the variety of assortment they have, which made my shopping experience quicker and easier. Today I purchased two Cocoa Bombs to make hot chocolate with; each one is $7.00 and their packaging is very adorable. What a treasure. Learned that Mignon Chocolates has been in business for 80 years, and the chocolates are made in Van Nuys. As this was my first visit, I needed some help and recommendations building a birthday box. Migdik was very friendly, and yes, if you check in on Yelp/Instagram, you get a free truffle. She did a wonderful job wrapping the box, too. So glad I stopped in, even though you can also order online. I am sure I will be back. Made several visits here...Valentines day and two other days to just get my fix. Its like crack. I need it badly. My absolute favorite chocolate there is the Salted Seashell. The smooth dark chocolate is covered in milk chocolate with sea salts mixed in. I love contrasting flavors! Sweet and salty. This chocolate boutique had been gawking at me every morning this week calling out my name, so I finally gave in and instantly transported me to a chocolate paradise. I was greeted by a young kind lady. I checked-in and was pleased to see that I was allowed one free truffle of choice or a chocolate from the "M" collection. Well, that was a no brainer, truffles are my fan favorite. I taste tested the truffle of choice which was the tiramisu truffle. It wasn't too sweet, it was creamy with a hint of mocha flavor. I then asked for my selection of chocolates for purchase. My guilt selection for the day (morning): Tiramisu truffle (addition to free choice from check-in) Hazelnut truffle Hazelnut ganache cup (2) Milk caramel espresso sea salt I don't recall the exact amount I paid, but it was a pretty decent amount. I can't believe I am writing a review on a place that i haven't eaten from but I had such a positive experience here the other day that I am vowing to go back and try the chocolate people are raving about. I needed some gifts and this place has been on my radar since its local and I like to support my community. I stopped by on a weekday afternoon two weeks ago. The minute I walked in a nice young man greeted me. He noticed my 9 month preggo belly and said he hoped they were doing my baby basket. Apparently they make lovely baby baskets. He offered me samples, but sadly I had to decline cuz of my gestational diabetes. There were beautiful display cases that I would have loved to dip into. I explained I couldn't have sugar. He mentioned they do make sugar free candy but alas the only fake sugar I can have is Splenda. We proceeded to talk. He gave me history and recommendations on what to get. I needed a gift for a gluten free friend and asked if the chocolates were gluten free. He didn't know but called the owner and he confirmed that their chocolate was gluten free. Yay! I ended up buying 3 boxes of chocolate. Very reasonably priced. I had such a nice time during my 10 minute visit I vow to go back after the baby is born to get me a dark chocolate treat! They had some lovely take home brochures that outlined all the various varieties of chocolates they make. I took them home to study! The cool and enticing thing about the chocolate were the different flavors like, lavender, chile, tarimusu! They even had a seasonal pumpkin chocolate. Yammers! I had fun picking out various pieces from milk choc, to dark to truffles. I was sad to leave without tasting anything but it was so fun to pick out pieces it made up for the lack of sampling! Ever since my favorite chocolatier closed down the only location on the West coast I've been searching for an alternative. It's been a good 5 + years since Neuhaus closed the location in Hollywood and Highland. I've tried many different chocolatiers including K chocolate, Leonidas, Compartes, and Max Brenner to name just a few and none have compared to Neuhaus. Used to be able to find Neuhaus inside the Macy's in SF but that has now been closed. Since the gf works in Pasadena, she decided to get me a box of Mignon. They have a wide assortment of flavors and so far all of the ones I've tried are pretty damn good. IIRC, Mignon used to offer a green tea flavor which was very good. I was a bit disappointed when visiting the Glendale location and didn't see it being offered anymore. Mignon also offers two collections, the regular and the M collection. My sister in law had a baby yesterday SOOO CUTE (but I digress again)... and in true Armenian tradition, I had to find a way to flood her hospital room with cute but unnecessary things. And she gave me all my options which started at $45 and went up to about $165 (depending on how big, elaborate and fab you want it to be), and that you can either pre-order a custom design or go pick one up. I walked in and was greeted by her happy face. She gave me samples that made my tongue dance and showed me a variety of options. I picked out the cutest basket and it was a big hit at the hospital. I felt like I was at the Charlie the Chocolate Factory movie. The sweet woman that helped me was so kind and helpful. She suggested some really great flavors to try out as samples. I ordered a 9-pc box. It was so stale - I don't think the chocolates were made anytime in the past YEAR. They were hard to bite into and the nuts inside tasted so stale and there was no crunch at all. I just read some reviews that people found worms in their chocolates, so yeah...Not surprised bc like I said, these chocolates are not fresh! I also sampled one of their chocolates, Marzipan, at the Pamper Me Fabulous Event by the ever so sweet and friendly guy working that table. The cameras come out to grab photos of all the beautiful ornate chocolates and bammmm, "Do not take pictures in here!" was yelled from off to our right. She jumped, I sighed, and we put or cameras away and proceeded to order. Tons of cute chocolates big and small were at our disposal. Ribbons, bows, sparkly things and quiant designs flooded out before our eyes all demonstrating one common denominator: chocolate! They have one heck of an impressive display which comes fresh from their factory daily/weekly. Most items adequately priced to boot! The guy working was pretty chill even though he yelled about the pictures. Oh, and he was about to close for the day so I'm sure he was tired and ready to go. Last thing he wanted was a couple of chocolate starved Yelpers bouncing around his shop. Fast and friendly service in light of that. They get a 5 from me this time. I actually enjoyed the chocolate factories up in Frisco better, but for SoCal, this is for sure one spot you have to hit.
