This review is about the tea, not the company. My drug of choice is black tea, which is really green tea just further dried and fermented. Many tea distributors will then flavor black tea, or buy it flavored and then resell it. I believe Mighty Leaf flavors their own teas. And they do a good job. I don't care so much for those pretty little pouches because that really doubles or triples the actual price of the tea itself. You end up paying for looks and presentation, which may gain you points on the vanity scale, but you loose points on the heart of the matter scale, which in this case, is the quality of the tea. If you are a serious tea drinker, a cup or so a day, or a few times a week, then buy bulk. It's about 1/3 the price of the tea baggery situation. Wholefoods is where I go to bulk up. How is it that San Rafael is the HQ for good caffeinated beverage companies? Equator, one of my favorite coffee companies also hails from here. I've had the teas from Mighty leaf in many a restaurant and cafe and one of my co workers just handed me a box of Orange Dulce. Not sure why I waited till now to review them. Mighty Leaf Tea Company has turned me into complete a tea snob! From their silk tea pouches to their awesome variety of teas, I am hooked. I have at least three cups a day while at work. I start off with two cups of the aromatic Orange Dulce in the morning, a stronger caffeinated black tea concoction with notes of jasmine and vanilla, and one cup of Mountain Spring Jasmine as my afternoon pick me up. I agree with Michelle S., their customer service is terrible. I've ordered tea from them a few times, and never had a problem until my last order. I waited and waited for my order, which never came. I called a couple of times to find out what was up, and no one ever called me back. I also e-mailed them, and I never received a response back until close to a week later. Their response was really curt with no apology whatsoever. They ran out of one of the loose teas that I ordered and had to make a fresh batch. Now why couldn't they drop me a quick courtesy e-mail to let me know that, instead of keeping me waiting and wishing that I never placed the damn order in the first place? BAD, UNACCEPTABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Despite my bad experience, their teas are really good. The rooibos African Nectar is my fave. My first discovered favorite is their flavorful Chrysanthemum tea (which I generally only order in Chinese dim sum restaurants, but this is much much better than any I've ever had), and my latest revelation is the Mountain Spring Jasmine. I will add to the kudos here. The Mighty Leaf people used to run a cafe on Fillmore Street - Tea and Company -- which was stylish and well-executed. I guess that their business model didn't plan on people occupying tables for 3-4 hours while consuming a $2 cup of tea. I was sad, sad to see Tea and Company go -- but love Mighty Leaf mail order. Yes, it takes a little more planning than going to Peet's, but I order 3 bags at a time which usually keeps me in tea for a month or so. Mighty Leaf isn't afraid to emphasize flavors. Peet's tends to have a purist attitude about tea (even as they crank out frozen green tea frappes....) in that flavors are few. Yes, there's mango, earl grey, and osmanthus fancy even -- but none of the sublime flavors that one could get at Mariage Freres or Fauchon in Paris. Mighty Leaf fills this void. Favorites: Green Tea Tropical -- always tastes fresh and bright Orchid Oolong -- despite the name, it's coconut flavored - and richly so Lychee -- the aroma is so heady it should be a controlled substance Pear Caramel -- smooth and delectable Flavors I'd like to see at Mighty Leaf: Grapefruit (black or green tea) Lemon myrtle Passion fruit green tea The full-leaf teas can be brewed at least twice with little loss of flavor. If I were rating just the tea it would be four and five stars, at least for the ones I've tried. Some won't stand up to a second brew and their bagged tea is often weak but their bulk teas, especially the blended ones are some of the best tea I've ever had and I'm addicted to a few of them. However, this review is not about the tea because the tea alone does not make the company. Their teas are overpriced and this is proven on all their competitors websites. Yes the Mighty Leaf Tea blends are unusual and unusually good, but not to the extent they've priced them. The only way you can buy some of the teas is through their website. They will not let you pick up tea so you're forced to pay shipping and in many instances the shipping is equal to the cost of the tea, even when you live in their neighborhood! That's just not right and the wholesale tea buyer's from our local grocery stores agree. Mighty Leaf loose teas aren't sold in the grocery stores so there is no way around the shipping. If Mighty Leaf really cared about fair and equal distribution they would address the concerns of the tea buyers about keeping bulk tea fresh on the shelves (like many of their competitors) so that we don't have to pay for shipping. The website is programmed so it is difficult to order what you want, when you want it. There is no such thing as next day shipping. Customer service is almost always one very nice woman, but raise a complaint and she goes defensive. The "I just work here" remark was such a surprise. Today I went to the websites for Samovar, Numi, The Tea Spot, Tea District, Rishi Tea and Generation Tea. I purchased their version of my favorite Mighty Leaf teas. I am determined to never over pay for tea again even if it means giving up the ones I love. Shame on Mighty Leaf for making it so hard. read more

I placed an order online for loose tea. When I hadn't heard anything after 2 weeks, I called their customer service. They said they'd "moved warehouses" and that all orders were delayed. I waited another week and called again. They said they were still having trouble filling orders. I canceled and they said they'd issue a credit. That was almost 3 weeks ago, and still no credit. Worst customer service ever! I have been buying Mighty Leaf products for the past 10 years from grocery stores. It is a little expensive but have found the taste to be worth it. I've liked the product well enough to purchase it also as a gift for friends and family. BUT, after today's experience, I have decided to NOT buy Mighty Leaf's products anymore. I called customer service because I noticed a hair inside of a Marrakesh Mint tea bag. The customer service person I reached, Cecilia, (I asked for her name because she was SO rude) said "SO? WHAT CAN I DO ?" I realize that the hair was not Cecilia's fault, but I would have, at least appreciated an apology on behalf of the company. I was motivated to call because I wanted to point out a defect so that the company could better manage quality control. But she didn't care. When I asked her for the address to send the tea bag to, she recited it blindingly fast and refused to repeat it. Also, since I have been buying the product for such a long time, I've noticed that the quantities of tea in the tea bags have diminished. But as one might expect, the prices haven't changed! No matter how good your product is, if your PROCESS is broken, the company will fail. Been a long term 5 year customer primarily of green tea. About 8 months ago they ran out of one of my favorite teas. The web site offered no option to notify me when it was in, or any consideration for them being out of stock. Yesterday I went in to order a number of 8 green teas. 50% were OUT OF STOCK. nothing on what they would do , no estimate of availability. no option to Chat on line. I dont know about you but I've been in customer service all my life. If something was out of stock I had to give a 90% date certainty of when it would be in and get it to the customer. I hate to find new suppliers but I will need to find a new tea suppler. I love the teas really. But you cant drink what you cant get. No option ot contact customer service. Love, love, love their products. Their ordering and customer service are not as good. I had to wait a day to get a reply to one of my questions. Is there only one person working in customer service? Maybe one person in the whole company? Definitely just one person working in accounting or whoever does inventory. Someone gave me a pouch of the lemon verbena tea. I loved it. I ordered from a different, cheaper brand but it wasn't as good. So I ordered some lemon verbena from Mighty Leaf and some mint tea as well. Just ordered directly from them for the first time. Got the message "we're doing inventory and your order will be delayed". Then a week of silence. When I finally emailed customer service I did get an answer after 24 hours that my order was going out today and wait for a tracking number. Never heard of a modern company "shutting down" to do inventory. Bizarre. read more

I just purchased a box of Mighty Leaf's Organic African Nectar. It was a few dollars more than other good brands but I liked the fact that on the box, it said organic, vegan, and fair trade certified. Also, this was on the box: "Our pyramid pouch is biodegradable, commercially compostable and we use no staples or glue. The carton is recyclable." Therefore, I was very disappointed when I opened the sealed box and discovered that each tea bag was encased in a non-recyclable plastic wrapper. I'm sure the reason is for freshness but if the tea is good, which it is, there is no reason for someone to be keeping it on the shelf for a long time (I do acknowledge that many other tea companies use paper wrappers that have a very thin lining of plastic). According to their website, the teabag itself is made of a so-called polylactic acid (a type of bioplastic), "derived entirely from renewable sources, such as corn." Um, that doesn't sound organic and the bag is steeping in my hot water along with the tea, so now my tea isn't organic. And the corn resource is very possibly GMO. The company site says the bags are hand-stitched with unbleached cotton (again, not organic) and I really, really hope those workers are paid a fair wage to stitch the bags (the Fair Trade certification is for the rooibos itself). As for the tea I bought, I cut the tea out of the polyester-like bags and brewed it like loose-leaf tea. It tasted marvelous, truly. So for customers who might feel the same way as I do about the above, I would recommend buying Mighty Leaf in bulk instead of those strange bags within a plastic wrapper (disclaimer: I do not know how the bulk tea is packaged). read more
