Very disappointed. As with all restaurants, I'm sure they are short-staffed. However, when you move to a table across from the bar because you were ignored for 10 minutes at a clean table, you then clean the new table, and then continue to wait as numerous waitstaff AND the bartender walk by with no acknowledgment (and new customers that squeeze in at the bar are served immediately) THAT"S when I have to say they aren't getting my business. Because I lived less than four blocks away, MBC quickly became one of my haunts. Two of the bartenders understood that I was a die-hard Oregon Ducks fan, and would reserve at least one television on Saturdays for football games. When you consider that every tv in Lansing would be on whatever respective Michigan-based sports team was playing, and here is Spartans country, they went above and beyond in doing that for me. As for the business itself, great! They always make sure to have plenty of beers on tap, dominated by regional and local brews. Their food never let me down, and being a poor college student, the house-cut garlic fries were a steal, and delicious to boot. Quite possibly the best fries in Lansing & East Lansing. There you go. I go to MBC weekly, for their trivia night, and sometimes bi-weekly just for the beer alone. I am a huge fan of their Celis beers, and their specials. $6 growler refills on Tuesdays, happy hour all day on Sunday? Super sweet. But the trivia night, where I can yell at my dad and tell him he is wrong? Priceless. I would skip the deep fried pickles. I was super amped about them, and they felt like exploding eyeballs in my mouth. Beyond that I never really eat here, just drink. Its an odd crowd of after work professionals, meets 20 something dudes, with a little bit of middle aged folks who look straight up lost. read more

Let me see... delicious Michigan Craft Brews - check, free peanuts - check, random board games to play - check! MBC is wonderful, and if you don't love it, you probably don't love Lansing. Or fun. Biggest tip I can give? Go after September 1 and get a Screamin' Pumpkin. They brew it with canned pumpkin instead of roasting the pumpkin like most other pumpkin ales. It seriously takes like pumpkin pie beer, and in my opinion is the only thing needed to make a fall season complete. Grand Cru is also an incredible beer. If you sweet talk the bartender he just may make you a beer bloody mary on an evening instead of a Sunday (they have brunch!), complete with spicy green beans. Yum! read more

Rather than complain or offer suggestions, I'm just going to describe my lunch experience today, and say that it's entirely representative of the past few times I've been in. A co-worker and I decided to head over to MBC for lunch and a beer. We took a seat outside and waited while the server dealt with another table. When he was done, he walked right past us without acknowledgement and headed inside. On our table there was a menu -- "NEW MENU" -- but no beer list. We waited. 5 minutes. 10. 15. Another server came and went without so much as eye contact. There was a woman with a small dog, smoking, at a nearby table. No one said a word. Finally I grabbed the server's attention. "Oh, you guys haven't been helped yet?" "Nope." "Okay, I'll be right with you." 5 more minutes. When he came back, we asked about a beer list, or what they have on draft. "I don't know. I don't have a list on me. I can go get one." "Okay, can we order food first?" "Sure." I tried to order the quinoa salad. "Oh, we're out of quinoa." Huh. Well, the vegan soup option is always a safe bet. "What's your vegan soup option?" "I don't know." Fine. My co-worker suggests he go grab a beer list while we look at other lunch options. 5 more minutes. 10. This was the point at which we got up and left, 35 minutes after sitting down. No food. No beer. No water. Not even a beer menu. We got waylaid by someone looking to have a petition signed. We both did. I kept an eye on our former table. By the time we were done, the server still hadn't returned. Would you go back? If this was your experience three times in a row? I know my answer. read more

We've gone to MBC for trivia night twice in the past month. They do a free trivia night on Tuesdays and its a lot of fun. The first time we won a round of beer, and the next time we won a 6 pack! Their beers are really good- I liked the Belgian White and my husband likes their IPA. They have a nice beer list with great descriptions, and the waitresses know even more. Both of our waitresses were friendly and helpful. The food was never really impressive. It was basic bar food... nothing too fancy. They cooked their fish well though. It wasn't overcooked or too greasy. The atmosphere is great! It is a wide open feel and it has been busy every time we've gone (nice for downtown Lansing). read more

Yikes. If it's a Sunday, be warned: they serve their weird brunch menu all day, even into the night. It's not very good: breakfast tacos with burned-out tater tots, a turkey wrap that's more like tuna salad, and quiche that was probably made years ago. Service was friendly but *slow,* in a way that kind of defies explanation given how few people show up on "Sunday Funday." The facility itself is not in great shape -- graffiti in the bathroom, rumpled menus that are clearly just copies of printouts on pink paper. Can't speak for what it's like on a non Funday, but it's clear that overall, this place's better days are well behind it. read more

Really surprised not to see higher ratings on this place. I had a steak sandwhich recommended by the bartender and it was really good. they had an arcadia tap takeover, which is slightly disapointing, because i'm curious what they usually have on tap, but the arcadia selection i had, nut brown, was really good. would definitely go back if i were downtown for lunch. read more

This is a nice brewpub in downtown Lansing on Washington Ave. The brews are excellent. When I was there, the selection was down somewhat, but the 7 or 8 micros I tried were all quality. I particularly enjoyed the High Seas IPA, an 11.9% smooth IPA. The food is upscale for a brewpub. My wife had the crabcake salad, and I tried the "Build Your Own" Burger with sauteed onions and fried pickles on a pretzel bun. Both were very good. The decor is a bit sterile, but is comfortable. The service was a little slow at first, but once we were noticed, the wait staff was helpful and prompt. The bartender was excellent on the second night we stopped by. Overall, this is probably the best place to get a good quality beer in Lansing. If you are a fan of a good craft beer, don't miss this gem in Michigan's capital. read more

This is just a food review since we didn't order any drinks. We went on a Monday night and found out they have half off burgers! Normally, the prices of burgers are around $10-13. I don't remember the name of the burger I had but it had cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. It was ok. I ordered it with their pub garlic fries which were really good! My bf got the black bean burger since he's a vegetarian and he really enjoyed it! The patty had a good texture; not too mushy. He had the sweet potato fries and that was really good too. Oh yeah, with their burgers you get to choose a variety of potatoes! Like their pub garlic fries, sweet potato fries, tater tots, and waffle fries!! It was very difficult for me to choose. I would come back just to try some other things out and order some drinks. Seems like they had a good variety of beers on tap. I think I'll try their home made crab cake sandwich! read more

Went in for lunch. Food service was a little slow for the number of people that were in there but not too bad. Our drinks were refilled promptly and the waitress was friendly. The food was OK, but the seasoning just a bit bland. I had the egg and pepper sandwich with chipolte mayo (I know, how can that be bland?). Tasty but while the spice level was fine, it needed a bit of acidity to make the flavors really pop. I added some Frank's hot sauce to the mayo (a bit vinegary) and suddenly the sandwich flavors stood out so much more. DH said his twisted turkey sandwich also need something but he couldn't quite put his finger on what. I'll try it again but I'm not particularly excited about it. We didn't try the beers as it was mid-day but they had 6 packs in the cooler for sale as we left. Maybe next time! read more

We enjoy coming here to enjoy a few local beers. Midtown has an expanding selection of their own beers, all of which have been pretty good. Food has been really good but has been declining recently. Sadly, they got rid of the tots quite awhile ago, pizzas used to be great but were off the menu last visit. Burgers are really good, probably best in town. Nice selection of sandwiches. Service is what really is holding them back. Servers very much hit or miss. Last time we went in we weren't acknowledged for at least 15 minutes after host sat us, but they gave us our first round of drinks for free to make up for it, which is a great gesture. Overall, there's big potential but lacking food and service quality to be great. read more

Update to an older review. I've gone to Midtown here and there since my original review and much of the pro's for the restaurant still exist. Staff is friendly, the location is great and the outdoor patio area is nice. One thing I haven't really noticed before is that Midtown is battling panhandling big time in the area. Over the course of an hour or so eating outside at the patio easily 5-6 panhandlers passed asking for change and stayed nearby. Obviously targeting customers coming and going. I know the signage outside says to not give hand outs and to donate local shelters to help combat the issues. I feel for the restaurant here and people that are homeless, it's a tough spot, but it can be distracting as a customer eating. The menu has changed. It seems simplified and shortened. Still many options of sandwiches, burgers and salads etc. The beer menu is still lengthy and great. I enjoy the options and the Midtown beers. I'm a little bummed some of my favorites from the old menu are gone, but I can see having a smaller menu helps the business. Over all it's still a great stop for a beer and bite r eat. Probably my favorite place in Washington downtown. read more

I was a little hesitant to try this place. After my date suggested it, I yelped MBC and was put off by the mixed reviews. After my first visit, I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. First of all, I love the atmosphere. Felt like I was hanging at a friends house. Comfortable, relaxed, and without any tacky decor (we'll save that for Applebee's). It's a shame I didn't try any beer, but my date got the raspberry one and liked it. I'm not a frequent beer drinker so that's about all I can report on that. I ordered the twisted turkey sandwich and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors of each component stood out and yet really came together. I got waffle fries on the side and those were crispy & perfectly done. My date got the crab cake sandwich and really enjoyed it. The prices were not outrageous at all. I can't wait to try MBC again. Always love coming here for lunch. They have excellent food (highly recommend the salads), and excellent local made sodas. They change the menu seasonally and I always wish I had more time to try more. The restaurant itself is nothing super fancy, but it does have nice outdoor seating and the seating near the window is great. The only reason why I give this four stars is because even though the wait staff is usually very kind and open to providing suggestions for a great meal, they are very very slow. If you are looking for a quick lunch over work within the lunch hour, this is not the place. But if you have some leeway- this is worth it. read more

I went here over the holidays and I was happy to see that Lansing is getting more good and fun restaurants! I had their white Belgium beer (not sure what they named it) and it was very good! I ate their french dip sandwich which wasn't bad but it wasn't anything to rave about. The sweet potato fries were good. They were playing a free trivia game which we participated in. That was fun and entertaining! We didn't do too good but it was fun to come up with random horrible answers for the questions! A couple of my friends really wanted wine with their dinner and this is a beer only place. It would be nice if they would add wine! We all had a good time. The waitress was pretty slow at getting our beers out. I think she forgot a couple times that we had ordered more, it was kinda annoying but since we were playing the trivia game it kinda distracted us from her lack of service! So I found a table in front of the window and sat down. 15 minutes later the two waitresses were still talking to a guy at the bar and no one came to my table. I finally got up and walked out. I would have given four stars because it's always crowded when I go, but I can't fault them for being awesome. The servers have CONSISTENTLY been polite and knowledgeable. The beer is amazing (especially in the fall, try their pumpkin spice ale). The food is incredible, in fact, I've NEVER had waffle fries that I liked until going here (it took some solid convincing on my friends' parts to even try them before I then had to order some for myself). Our server, Justin, was super friendly and very knowledgeable about their beers and food. He made us feel truly welcomed. The food was simply AMAZING!!! I had the Lobster Grilled Cheese, and hubby had the Smoked Dip. The pub fries were delicious, as were the sweet potato fries. We split a flight, and Justin helped us choose some beers we might like based off the few we had already selected. His choices were perfect. Because of the variety of breweries in the Detroit area where I live, it's disappointing to see so few breweries in the Lansing area, with Michigan Beer Co being about the only choice. The Good: MBC has a great location in downtown Lansing. It's away from the craziness of East Lansing while still being close enough to drive. The food was amazing. We started off with deep fried pickles, which were much better than I thought they could be. The batter was perfect and they tasted great. I ordered a BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger and it was one of the best burgers I've had recently. The burger was cooked to a perfect juicy medium and the BBQ sauce was delicious. It came with a side of sweet potato fries that needed no salt or ketchup, as they were delicious. The Average (or maybe just above average): The beer list on the table is very impressive, although you'll need to make sure to check out the chalkboard above the bar to see what's available. I tried the Maibock and a seasonal that I can't think of right now (something akin to a porter or stout). They were both okay, but nothing that I would say I need to have again. I would've tried the porter and stout if they had them at the time, but they didn't. The selection was large enough that I'll need to go back and make sure I'm not forming my opinion too early. The Bad: The service was awful. Our waiter was very friendly, but it took him about 10 minutes after we came in to get our drink order. Throughout the meal, it took him much longer than it should to get new drinks and he did not check on us very often, which left us waiting quite a few times. All said, the excellent food and large beer selection will lead me back to MBC next time I'm in town. read more

Expect to wait a while to get your drinks, and if you get those quickly then expect to wait a while to get your food. my roommates and friends and I go there often because thursdays are 35 cent thursdays, and the beer is good. But every time we go, whether it's lunch or dinner, the service is always terrible. i went once where I actually had a good waitress. she deserves about 4 stars, but that was only about once time. read more

Ok so the staff is great, but the last two times I've been there they've been out of something on the menu... for the price it's kinda disappointing. Had the fried goat cheese which was talked up and it tasted like fried feta that was a tad greasy... not so great. Had a burger it was painfully dry. Again. Over priced for the portions and quality. We had the smoked wings and a burger. The wings were dry and had a sulfur taste, do not recommend. The burger was basic and fine, but not worth the $10.95. Overrated beer If you are a business and you make something yourself, I would expect it to be better than what I can just buy at the store. Not true for the beer at MBC. We went there on a Monday (burger night) and I had a discount burger and a beer sampler. After tasting a sampling of all their brews I found it hard to choose one I would want to consume an entire glass of. They also had a ridiculous guy playing the guitar there as though they were going to provide some awesome music bar atmosphere on an otherwise boring Monday night. The music was painfully loud and we could only talk between the songs. I just wanted it to over but the service was so ridiculously slow that my agony was unnecessarily prolonged. Don't bother, there are now so many bars and restaurants on Washington Square that you don't need to waste your time on this one. read more

Midtown Baller Company? Just had lunch with my brother and one other guest. The fried pickles were excellent--no wimpy hamburger pickle chips here. I had the salmon sandwich I'm usually not a huge mayo/aioli fanatic, so the garlic aioli on the salmon sandwich was too much. The MBC hash (potato medallions with scallions and red pepper) was nice and peppery. The Raspberry Blond Ale would turn make any beer hater think twice. It was light, fruity, but maybe too light for someone that actually likes beer. The music left something to be desired. I'm not sure if it was poor selection on the jukebox. I'm not sure how I feel about my brother humming Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like A Bird" after visiting a beer/burger joint. I was feeling saucy, so I offered to pick up the bill. $65 and some change for 3 lunches, 3 beers and an appetizer. Maybe that's reasonable, but not for this self-confessed cheapskate. Next time, I'll stick to the beer flights and appetizers, or check out the happy hour. read more

I came here on October 6th, just forgot to write the review. Oops. Me and my partner don't frequent Lansing all that often, but we were in the area for a show at The Loft and decided on Midtown for our dinner. Upon entering, the atmosphere seemed kind of dark and dreary. Meh, okay, I'll look past it. There were a few gentlemen at the bar - which is where we sat at - and that was pretty much it. It kind of threw me off a bit, especially with the awesome reviews on Yelp? Why is this place so empty if it's so awesome? Anyways...We sat down at the bar. Our bartender - Jesus help me, I cannot remember her name, but she was so accommodating and sweet - was A+ with everything, but kind of slow. That's okay though because we definitely had time to kill. We got the truffle fries (which were a bit greasier than I would have liked) alongside our drinks as an app. I got the Black Cherry Creme soda - that was fricken' EPIC - and my partner had 16 oz of Old Rasputin on tap. Then for dinner, I ordered the Ale House Mac n' Cheese w/ Lobster & Truffle Oil. Ringing in at $18, it was a tiny bit expensive for the amount of lobster I got - maybe 4 halfway decent-sized pieces? So that was disappointing. My partner got the Mutha Ducker sandwich that he is STILL talking about almost a month later. He said the duck was cooked to perfection and everything melded together extremely well. Overall, it was a good experience. I'm just a bit irked by my mac n' cheese.
