They charged me for a horrible job. They did an oil change. I drove off from Midas to get to my house. Once I got home. My brand new car with 15,000 my dashboard said my engine oil is low. So I checked several times even after an hour to see the oil dipstick. My car had no oil!! Terribly disappointed and frustrated. I check under my car there was oil leaking underneath my car. I called and told them about the situation. They didn't believed me said they had to talk to a manager first thing in the morning the next day. Mind that. Front service person i clearly told him my car had a turbo because he asked! I checked the paper it said 0W-20 when my car specifically needs 5W-30 since I have a turbo!!!! Really terrible job. BEWARE - We took our second car that is rarely driven in for two new front tires. I drove away and noticed it was incredibly dirty on the inside, then i noticed a bag of smoking tobacco next to me, then i noticed the mileage was higher, and finally upon reaching home a mile away saw the front bumper had been smashed in. The store isn't taking responsibility and has refused to share the owners contact information or take responsibility. He claimed it must have been a homeless person. These guys really know their stuff, and they're not looking to screw you over; Frank and Nebo, and every other staff member I've interacted with, are professional, thorough, attentive, and personable. I took my 2009 Prius to them for regular maintenance for about a year, and when I got a new car (2013 VW Passat), they were the first mechanic I went to. I had a lot of anxiety about buying a used car (based on extremely terrible past experience with deceitful dealers), and they listened to my concerns and reassured me, without speaking down to me, that the car was a good buy. They explained what maintenance would be necessary down the road, and they answered all of my questions seriously and thoughtfully. I've gone to this Midas in Highland Park, IL many times because it's the closest place to my house. I can drop off the car and walk home and pick it up later. There is a friendly staff and there are a couple of people that had work there that were pretty cool to chat with. That being said I would state the following based on multiple experiences at Midas in Highland Park, IL: 1. I'm not sure if it's policy, management, or the individual but the Midas in HP are very aggressive at trying to up sale you on additional services. If you only require routine service, be prepared to deal with someone pressuring you into paying for more services you may not need. When ever I drop off the car and receive the call back, the get the anxiety one would get when having to deal with a used car salesman. 2. If you reject services, sometimes your car may not be put back together as good as it was before. Meaning, we've had no problems with something but soon after "non service" something would happen related to something Midas inspected. 3. In some cases, you have to check to see if what they said they would do, they've actually done. I've asked twice, while the car was in the bay if they were going to do something, told "Yes, absolutely" only to find that it was not done at all. Before I get an oil change, I check my oil and filter so I know if it's been changed. I've marked my tires, to see if they were rotated and sometimes, they were not. You should not have to perform this kind of investigation before taking your car to the shop. There have been times where I've taken my car further way and paid more than the quote I received from Midas because of these issues. However, sometimes its just a hassle to have to wait while services are being performed or having to Uber home and back for lengthy services. In summary, if you intend on using the Midas in Highland Park, do your homework, know your car, check the work, and pay closer attention to home your car performs after service. Absolutely wonderful service. I had an idea of what was wrong with my car and figured there would be more. They went over my car, showed me the issues and gave me an estimate in about 10 minutes. They told me what I needed for safety and what could wait, along with prices for everything. ZERO PRESSURE. They had it done within the same day and they DROVE ME HOME. Manager was helpful but was more interested in a larger sale than fixing a tire. My wife came in with a leaking tire on our SUV after running over something on Skokie Highway. We were told by Midas rep tire should be replaced in pairs versus fixing the flat. He told me the tires had dry rot and were not fixable. I was not prepared to pay $500 for a set of tires when the tread was still good. Dry rot sounded a little bit like BS to me. So I asked Midas to put the spare tire on the SUV. I paid them $30. Then I went to my mechanic for a second opinion where he patched the puncture from the inside and plugged the hole, remounted the tire and reset the TPMS for another $30. They were courteous at Midas and changed out the spare with no issues so three stars for that. read more

BEWARE read all the 1 star reviews before bringing your car for repairs here. After paying $160 for a "diagnosis" they installed only a new AC compressor. At first he quoted me $900 with labor only being $180 so $720 for a oem compressor. I bought the compressor OEM warrantied for $300 online. That's over 200% and well beyond a "fair" markup. Should of walked away at this point. I told them don't we have to do the drier, lines, etc. with it and he said no it didn't blow up just leaking we don't need to do that (which was wrong as my qualified mechanic found shrapnel). So I payed Midas to install the compressor and guess what the ac does not work after installed! I called 5 qualified mechanics and asked "would you ever install just an AC compressor" they all said "NO its industry standard to also install the other parts as they will almost always be clogged when a compressor goes bad and can damage the new compressor". Midas either knew this was not going to work and just saw it as a way to get extra labor costs or they are simply not knowledgeable enough to be doing these AC repair jobs. After it failed they want more money to take apart the car again and install new piece after new piece. It's all a money grab. I brought it to another shop. They figured out exactly what piece was clogged in under an hour and got it fixed and blowing ice cold that day! read more

Beware. Went to Midas with an exhaust issue on an 11 year old Honda. Mgr. examined vehicle and determined that exhaust system required a weld between j-pipe and muffler, but otherwise exhaust system checked out fine. Mgr. estimated cost of repair (weld) at $400. Really? He later reduced estimate to $350 after I questioned high cost for a simple weld. This didn't pass the smell test, so I left. Vehicle was repaired at a reputable shop for substantially less. read more

Had rusted flex pipe on exhaust on an old Audi A4. Took into Bryant and explained that I wasn't looking to replace the whole exhaust system since I wasn't planning to keep the car very long. He was familiar with the issue and was able to cut and weld in a new piece of pipe for a reasonable cost within 2 hours. Went to Midas in Highland Park, IL for an oil change on an antique vehicle. The vehicle has a slow oil leak that I wanted them to check out as well, just to see if they could identify the issue. Had to purchase an oil filter online because this place could not figure out what filter should be used. That's well enough, but I still had to pay $101 for an oil change, which seems a bit steep to me, even with synthetic oil being used. This place indicated they didn't want to investigate the slow oil leak, which is also fine; not great but whatever. The real problem came when I was called to pick up my vehicle. It was parked out front, so they never showed me the oil level on the dipstick, as would commonly be the case. I drove home and checked the oil level, only to find the oil had been under filled. The oil level was filled only to the "add" line in the dipstick. I called them immediately, and the individual who answered was professional enough, indicating that I could bring the vehicle back and they'd fill it to the appropriate level. I drove back immediately, and the technician who worked on my vehicle was waiting for me. Instead of apologizing for wasting my time or gas going back and forth, which I would have totally accepted, his greeting was, "How much oil do you put in there?" I answered that I wasn't sure. His response was "Well, figure it out before you bring this thing back here." That put me in a different state altogether. I asked him if he was indicating that it was my fault that he under filled the oil, and the conversation quickly escalated from there. With all kinds of cursing, at me and about the vehicle, which I will not repeat here, just some of ridiculous statements I was subjected to included, "what do you care, we'd replace the engine." And "you obviously know nothing about business." And "of course I checked the dipstick. It probably just leaked out. You said there was a leak." In the end he added a full quart of oil, which would have meant that my slow oil leak turned into an oil gushing geyser that lost a quart of oil per mile driven. Overall, this was an unapologetically absurdly poor service experience laced with personal insults and cursing on their part. I let him know that I would be writing a review about the experience, and he replied, "Oh, I didn't know my business was based on good reviews." read more

I've been going to this Midas for years. They have saved my Jeep several times. Once in awhile I will get quotes from other places. Those others are always higher in price and seem to find 3-4 "other things" wrong. I always end up at Midas:( . The staff is wonderful, courteous, and knowledgable. This is probably the worst place I've been to in a long time. It took them 6 hours total to work on my car. They up-sold me on cleaning the engine and in the process mishandled engine cover so it was not tied all the way and the thread on one of the bolts was broken. But MOST important - they over-inflated rear tires. I have 17" wheels and tires combination and they used info from 18" wheels, so my back tires were at 45psi instead of 35psi. When confronted with this info they were unexpectedly rude. Overall I don't think they can work on anything above and beyond Toyota Corolla. read more

My car needed a very minor repair to the muffler so I consulted Yelp to select a muffler repair shop in Highland Park. There were two listed and both had bad reviews. I decided to try this Midas despite the bad reviews because of the name recognition. I called the shop to see if they would take an appointment and they don't. A few weeks later I took the car in on a weekday in the early afternoon. There were some people there waiting for their car repairs to be completed. I waited for someone to help me at the counter. After a while he finally showed up. He told me that he was busy right now and that it would be at least an hour before he could get to my vehicle and that I should come back. Ok that seems fair. I asked if I would keep my place in the queue. " No I would not"' he said. But if I come back in an hour there could still be an hour or longer wait. "Yes, that could happen," he said. "So you don't want me to stay and I should come back?" I said. "Yes" he said. I don't think he wanted my business at all. Even when I explained what he was asking me to do made no sense he didn't get it. He had a very take it or leave it and smirky attitude. I decided to leave it and remind him that he deserved every bad review that he had. read more

I went there to get an oil change when I was 16, and this employee by the name of Jeff told me that I have to tip him... I was getting my keys back and Jeff said, "Do you have money for the tip? I recently went to get brakes checked out on my car. I was advised that I need the front brakes (pads and rotors) and the rear brakes (pads and rotors) replaced. Given an estimate of over $1000. Went in for an oil change Saturday and was informed: 1. As there was a screw in my tire and the tire was patched 3 times, it could not be patched again. 2. Inconsistency in the thread on the tire based on his analysis, due to shocks. 3. New shocks required due to number 2. Cost = $950 I paid for my oil change and left. Called a garage locally in Deerfield (Shell) and asked for a patch on my tire and he recommended a rotation. The Shell garage did not see an inconsistency in my patched tire. Cost = $40 Although an oil change is cheap with Midas, they somehow point out weaknesses in your car go gain more business. read more

This was my experience, you can take it or leave it. Took my wife's car in because engine light was on for them to run a full diagnostic. $92. Not unreasonable for the right amount of work. Was called shortly after drop off and told the throttle body needed to be replaced. It would cost $1,069 dollars. Asked for the details as far as parts labor etc. Part cost for a new one was told $618. Did my research, and this wasn't retail, it wasn't premium, it was 150 - 200% on top of what this part should cost. And I don't mean wholesale. Everyone has to make their money. Called some other places and they both said a throttle body replacement should be a $500 -$600 repair. As I learned further, there diagnostic work was nothing more than downloading the fault code. Even online for this code says option should be to check sensors and clean the throttle body first as it is easily cleanable. They did not have my car long enough to determine the throttle body could be so far gone as to necessitate a replacement. When called and told them thought part seemed high they reached out to their supplier and said could get it for about $100 less. Still over a $900 repair. When said no thank you, I'd like to pay for the diagnostics (overpaying but whatever) and pick it up, I got disconnected. Called back, and they said ok, come pick it up. Auto Repair service is 100% about trust. I don't feel they are trustworthy. You can slaughter a sheep once or sheer it forever. They go for the slaughter and don't care. read more
