This was my experience, you can take it or leave it. Took my wife's car in because engine light was on for them to run a full diagnostic. $92. Not unreasonable for the right amount of work. Was called shortly after drop off and told the throttle body needed to be replaced. It would cost $1,069 dollars. Asked for the details as far as parts labor etc. Part cost for a new one was told $618. Did my research, and this wasn't retail, it wasn't premium, it was 150 - 200% on top of what this part should cost. And I don't mean wholesale. Everyone has to make their money. Called some other places and they both said a throttle body replacement should be a $500 -$600 repair. As I learned further, there diagnostic work was nothing more than downloading the fault code. Even online for this code says option should be to check sensors and clean the throttle body first as it is easily cleanable. They did not have my car long enough to determine the throttle body could be so far gone as to necessitate a replacement. When called and told them thought part seemed high they reached out to their supplier and said could get it for about $100 less. Still over a $900 repair. When said no thank you, I'd like to pay for the diagnostics (overpaying but whatever) and pick it up, I got disconnected. Called back, and they said ok, come pick it up. Auto Repair service is 100% about trust. I don't feel they are trustworthy. You can slaughter a sheep once or sheer it forever. They go for the slaughter and don't care. read more

Was very leery of coming here due to the bad reviews, but I was in a pinch. Spoke with Ray told him I needed an oil change and my brakes checked. I knew I needed brakes or soon would. Ray called me and said I had about 10% of wear left on the brakes. Contrary to trying to sell me a bunch of unnecessary things. This was a refreshing surprise. I went ahead and had the brakes done as I was heading out on a road trip. Another plus was I was able to get a car for $28 from Hertz next door. I was staying in highland park house sitting when my car started making a funny noise. I usually do not like going into mechanic shops by myself because i am a female and i feel like they take advantage, this time that was not the case. The manger explained what the noise was and took me back into the garage so i could see that my belt was basically nothing. While i was there i also go an oil change. the service was quick and the employees were friendly. The location is not the best because of how far i actually live from there but i would make the trip. read more

Ray the manager seems to be a good guy. I came her with a few quotes in my pocket from other shops and their price was less and the job was done very quick. I was happy that no additional services were added and that the TV. was working. I would not recommend the oil change as the price is extremely high. read more

Had new muffler installed on my 61 Dodge Phoenix. They did and excellent job. A few months later the car sounded a bit throaty on the exhaust. I figured I needed additional work dome on other portions of exhaust system. They took my car with only a fifteen minute wait. They identified the issue as a coupling was getting loose that they installed and decided best to weld it which they did. They did not charge me anything for this. They could have easily told me that this was additional work and I would have gladly paid it. These people do great work. They are honest and stand behind their product. read more

I went in for an oil change and came out with a striped bolt that would not go into the oil pan. Brian the service manager told me that it was stripped from a year ago when I had my oil changed at another place. So for a whole year my oil did not leak and the plug that was over tightened allegedly somewhere else was now to lose. I ended up having to replace the oil pan and that cost me $353.60. I called the district office and some district manager named Ray returned my call and was obnoxious. He said he would believe his managers over me and whom else I had contacted. If you even google it, oil pans that are lose is because of the person who happens to be working on it. I could not get a word in edgewise. Go elsewhere. I thought I would save money not going to the dealer. read more

I realized that my brakes were feeling very light and hitting all the way down to the floor on slow stops. Scary. I just moved into Highland Park about a year ago. I drive by the Midas everyday and realized that is where I can go on a whim. I met with Ray Dwyer and he said that they will have to run a test on my brakes. It turned out that I needed new rotors and some other items, including new tires. I waited max about two hours. When the work was all done, I drove home, Unfortunately, I realized the same symptoms were there. I went back to Midas and told them that the problem is still there. Unfortunately, it was something else they did not identify. They took me to the garage and showed me the brake area, and then I realized that one time I accidentally poured motor oil (just a tad) in the break opening - instead of the motor oil area. They were happy to know that I realized what the problem really could be. They offered to continue to flush out the system until the symptoms went away. They even offered a loaner car at no extra charge to me. We finally got the problem resolved. I was very grateful. I had professional service, detailed explanation to what could be going on. I had diagram and samples shown to me what was going on. Good consulting, good communications and very much super customer service skills. Please rate this a high star five. read more

I have used Midas for simple tire changes on my car for years. When my wife's car needed alignment, I brought it to Midas. To perform the alignment, we were told that the tire rods were heated (didn't ask in advance), then informed us the rods needed to be replaced at a total cost of $700. Once returned, the steering had a clicking sound. My wife brought the car back to Midas for the opportunity to fix the issue, and they claimed that they didn't know what was wrong and stated that it was "unrelated to the alignment." To obtain a second opinion, she brought the car to Volvo. They indicated that the rods had been over-tightened and heated unnecessarily (likely didn't need to be replaced in the first place) and, in the process of heating the rods, the protective boots had been destroyed. Volvo charged us an additional $150 to loosen the alignment that was caused by Midas' shoddy work and inability to diagnose and fix the problem when given the opportunity to do so. Given Ray's unbelievably rude attitude when confronted with the issue, we now wouldn't even recommend Midas for a simple tire change. Shoddy work, failure to own up to their error, lack of communication and poor customer service! read more

I have been a customer at Midas in Highland Park for over 5 years. The Store Manager Bryant Cabrera has taken wonderful care of me. Not only does he greet me with a smile, but he took great care of my 2004 Mercury Sable. He would fix what needed to be fixed, and then give me a schedule for what other repairs could wait and be taken care of in the future. He was always very friendly, patient, knowledgeable and went out of his way to help me. His mechanics are excellent and could diagnose whatever was wrong very quickly. I am wary of car repairs. As a rather clueless middle aged woman, I am constantly worried that I am being upsold. But Bryant, the assistant service manager here, is a good one. Today was perhaps my third trip there, and he remembered me. He didn't try to upsell me-- and instead took the time to answer questions and even educate me about how to save money on car repairs. He walked through all of my "for dummies" questions about car maintenance (brakes, tires, etc) and got me on the road in quick time. Solid place. My new car repair home. read more

First of all, they tout how much cheaper they are then the dealer but they continue to up sell. Secondly, they DO NOT know how to work on foreign cars. Great service on a simple but urgent job: replacing a left-turn-signal bulb. Called and got a prompt appointment with estimate. When I came in, car was taken in immediately and job was completed in a few minutes. Manager took the time to explain that bulb specified in owner's manual was not the right one. Left and within 30 minutes had to get towed to the closest Midas (per the Highland Park Midas's request) because my car started shaking and clunking. TURNS OUT MY LUG NUTS WERE ALL LOOSE!!! So I go in there for an oil change. As I'm waiting with my 4 year old daughter one of the guys comes out and informs me that I have a "HUGE leak" and it "really needs to be taken care of right away". I admit, I'm a female that knows nothing about cars (which I'm pretty sure he figured out). I was hesitant simply because I don't trust these guys as they tend to take advantage of people who know nothing about cars. He tried to get me to commit to them taking care of it right then. I told him I had an uncle who was mechanic and that I would have him look at it (which is true). When I had my uncle check out the car there was NOTHING WRONG with it! The douchebag of an employee thought that he could scare me into spending money on a made up problem. I WILL NEVER GIVE THEM BUSINESS AGAIN!!!! DISHONEST & UNPROFESSIONAL. No matter how helpful they sound in the store, beware! I went in for an oil change and new battery, they came out telling me that I needed an estimated 3000 dollars amount of work done on my car. I told them I would like to get a second opinion and the man behind the counter said that at least I should get this one thing done (something with my steering) because they were dangerously stripped. I said fine and instead of leaving with a 100 dollar bill I left with a 783.29 dollar bill. Fine..I paid. But as I was driving I noticed my steering very screechy and my car kept stalling when I put the air on. I also noticed they didn't top off my fluids, nor did they replace my wipers which was stated would come with the oil change. When I took a look under my hood I found that they didn't even place my battery cover on and it was sliding around under my hood, they also didn't give me the right size battery. Lastly, when changing the battery they dislodged a hose which was causing my car to stall...this Midas is only looking to make a profit and not to solve the problem. I gave it to Bob on the phone tonight. I never go in there because frankly I hate how these places are known for taking advantage of women, so I send my mom haha. And they tell her my tires are run down.. Ps hhn. They replaced a right rear bulb which went out in a week and now he's blaming it on a short fuse and I said well maybe its just the bulb and he said well if it was just the bulb then it'd be just the bulb for just about everyone who comes in..which makes no sense. So then I said. I really do not appreciate you or anyone trying to take advantage of me or screw me over because I'm a woman " Ohhh I ain't gotta screw no one over I got 3 daughters I don't screw over kids or older people blah blah" " oh ok sir well forget it but I just want my bulb replaced and you owe me a new one " click .. Hang up. I don't think I will be going in for my bulb that I did in fact pay for. This place is a dump hole. Please for your own sanity avoid it at all costs. This shop is the worst. I took my daughters car there to have the snow tires removed and the regular tires reinstalled. They broke one of the tire sensors and could not even calibrate the new one. The owner Ray was very rude. I ended up having to go to Fields Jeep to get a new sensor installed. Midas wasted over 4 hours of my time. I should have gone to the dealer to begin with. I will never go here again and would not recommend this shop to anyone. read more

Don't trust them anymore. We had been taking our cars here for years and had been very happy and felt they were very honest... Until a few weeks ago. Brought the car in for a standard oil change and tire rotation. They refused to rotate the tire saying the rear tires were too worn. (The tires had less than 10,000 miles on them and were less than a year old. They blamed the bad shocks and struts, and told me it would be over $1,000 to replace. I took the car to a family mechanic whom we know well and trust. He said tires and struts looked 100% fine. As did the dealer that we brought the car into weeks later for unrelated work. Bottom Line, I no longer trust them, and will never ever bring another car into this midas shop again. read more

Replaced front struts but failed to tighten sway bars and did no perform an adequate road test to ensure the repair was complete. Left premises but needed to return and leave vehicle for a second day while they figure this issue out. Manager attempted to sell multiple additional services (rear brake replacements, belt replacements and rear strut replacements) none of which were required. Have subsequently taken the vehicle to a reliable mechanic to check these items and have confirmed none were necessary. I can only assume the Manager was short of his sale quota. I will never return. If you plan to I would suggest you go at the beginning of the month! read more

Best service I've ever had. I'm new to the area and have always felt insecure with taking care of my car myself. Bryant was incredibly patient, knowledgable, understanding, generous, and thorough, which resulted in me leaving feeling empowered and educated about how to care for my car myself. My oil change was so much more than a simple oil change. Given the age of my vehicle, I had planned to sell my car in the near future. Went in for an oil change and also noted my trunk release was jammed and asked if they could take a look. They squeezed me in when they already said they were booked for the day. Not only was oil changed but they opened my trunk and charged half of what the dealership would have. Great experience. I had so many issues with my car for a long time. Every shop I went to would try and sell my things that "would fix everything " and time after time I kept having problems. I went to Midas and talked with the manager Bob. He was super helpful. He explained things in terms that I would understand as a girl and didn't try and con me into doing more than needed to be done. Under new management, Bryant, the Assistant Service Manager, and Ray, the Store Manager, did a great of explaining the problem and giving me a number of options for repair. I called Midas for an estimate on my exhaust work. Courteous but dishonest. I think that Bob, the service writer, was trying to scare me into getting the work done which he had directly inquired after at least 3 times during the process of getting an estimate. He said that my exhaust system could fall out from under me while on the road requiring more extensive repairs. I asked, "Has it really deteriorated that much?" He said "yes." Little did he know that I have experience in the industry having been a car mechanic apprentice for 2 years. When I took my car for a second estimate down the street at CarX, I made sure to take a look when it was in the air and jiggle the exhaust system around. Not on the verge of collapse at all. Needless to say I went to CarX. Oh, and they did the job for $300 less than the Midas quote. Bob at Midas had supposedly shopped 3 places for my expensive exhaust parts and was only going to charge me an hour of labor. The first parts quote CarX pulled up was way less than that.
