Cashiers must be expensive because this company, despite all the skip scan articles, has gone all in on Self Check Out. And it's not very intuitive. Most checkouts you can enter your loyalty number and start scanning. I feel tech-savvy but the self-checkout was just confusing. It's not clear which ones are open. You can't see the checkout situation until you're next in line to checkout. At one point the lone cashier started scolding the CUSTOMERS for not using self-checkout and told US the line was so long it didn't make sense and WE had to do something about it. Excuse me? I don't work here, find someone who DOES to do something about this long line. How about order online and have it delivered? Or better yet... just order from anywhere online. read more

Okay, maybe my review is a little biased because I don't know of many other home goods craft stores quite like Michaels -- but I just can't get past some of these prices. $80 for a reef ornament? If it were handmade, I could understand, but for a plastic one? That's a hard pass. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Everything from candles to basic stationery items you could grab at Walmart is marked up to a level that feels unnecessary. Now, to be fair, they do have some great sales -- and when I say great, I mean really great. But you shouldn't have to wait for a sale just to feel like you're not paying an arm and a leg for a craft project. On the plus side, the staff is friendly and helpful. They have the kind of customer service I appreciate -- where someone actually walks you to what you're looking for instead of just pointing in a general direction and disappearing. That said, the front desk and self-checkout area are another story. I stood at the self-checkout for a solid five minutes waiting for anyone to come by and help with a screen issue so I could remove an item. No one ever came, so I eventually gave up and checked out at another register. Overall, it's a nice store with good selection and solid staff, but I'll be honest -- next time I come, I'll be coming for the sales, not the sticker prices. First of all I appreciate the great prices, but the real reason for this 5 star review is the manager went well beyond the call of duty, Thomas was excellent!! My daughter had a bit of a disagreement with one of the staff and I asked to speak with the manager and his conflict resolution skills were amazing. I drove 30 minutes to get here now that Joanne's is gone. What a disappointment. The store is messy, disorganized and low on stock. The help was pretty nonexistent too. The sale specials on the floor rang up differently from what the checkout price. I had to take pictures of the signs to prove to the sales person that the prices were wrong. Michaels is on the higher end of a craft store. They did an excellent job in helping me select a perfect photo frame. Girl at the check out was so kind and helpful, she also signed me up quickly for discounts to immediately help me at the check out with them. Found lots of stuff on clearance, so that was awesome. Safety protocols are in place too. Prices are reasonable and staff is unbelievably friendly and nice. Inventory is kind of little low lately, but still a good place to shop. They have really cleaned the store up and have hired some more people to help on the floor. I came here to get a baking pan. They always have a big inventory and it is a big and clean location. They updated their checkout area where you can self-checkout which I like. The woman working near the checkout section was very helpful and showed me how to navigate the checkout computer. They always have coupons you can use online or in person so I really like that. NONE of the employees at this location wore a Mask and 90% of the customers didn't wear one either. The mature man in the frame dept in the back stood only 2-3 feet away while interacting with customers. A staff member told me Michaels does not require their employees or customers to wear a mask. And as if that wasn't enough, I encountered a young lady who was checking customers out, that should find herself another job if she is that unhappy with the one she has there. She informed me an item was not on sale, when it was clearly marked 70% off and was shelved in the clearance section with 25 of the same product beside it. Clearly not my problem. After having to physically walk her to the shelved items, as she spoke under her breath the entire time and her sales line became increasingly longer, she exclaimed that they were just "in the wrong spot." The store was very clean and organized. My only complaint was the woman working at the cashiers. Her abrasive, dismissive attitude was very off-putting and totally unexpected for such a laid back environment. When I asked for help - very respectfully I might add - it was obvious to me she was irritated due to her deep sigh and eye roll. Oh, I'm sorry, is me seeking assistance TOO MUCH to ask?! My goodness. Meanwhile, the reason I flagged her down was because the self-checkout kiosk had asked for me to wait for a member to assist me since I had just signed up for their rewards program and wanted to apply the discount. When she got to me, I told her what the kiosk had indicated and she informed me that I would receive a discount voucher via email. Okay, fine. Not sure why it asked if I want to apply the discount to my order then, but that's no problem. However, as I was paying I noticed a discount had been applied anyway so I stated aloud "Oh great, it gave me a discount anyway." And the woman rudely said, "That's because it was On Sale." I ignored her but there was no doubt she was trying to invalidate my satisfaction. It's not what she said so much as the way she said it. Meanwhile, there was no sign saying the item I purchased was on sale so how would I have known that. In any event, her attitude was totally uncalled for and I will definitely not be going back to that store for a while. No one deserves to be treated as if they are a nuisance simply for asking an employee for assistance at a department store, especially if they aren't being rude themselves. read more

Came in to purchase acrylic paints. At checkout I stood waiting for 15+ minutes while a new employee attempted to sell some chemicals to someone. She was struggling with some protocol and removal of a product safety device- manager came up and saw the 12 people in line, said to the trainee, "Oh! I didn't realize you needed me." Showed her how to remove the device from packaging and then LEFT the trainee again. Another 10 minutes later she came back and the trainee was still dealing with the same customer/sale and after people in the line said "we need you to open another register," she finally opened a register to assist the obviously new and overwhelmed employee. read more

While waiting for my drive up order, I called the store. The store personnel immediately said "please hold" and never answered the phone. So, I parked and went in the store. I have an injured hip and explained this to the individual inside, would they please help. Told them that I only needed one item, in which I had paid for it online. She said "NO" and told me I had to walk to the back of the store to get it. She pointed in the direction - grabbed a pack and tossed it to me and left. It was the wrong item and the most expensive one on the shelf. I just needed the 18 pk of mini hot glue sticks. The floor display was a total mess - one had to dig through every sku to find the small package of mini hot glue sticks. The person in picture frames came over and asked if I need help - I told him - He just stood there. The other person that pointed to me - returned and used her hand held scanner to find the right package. I then had to walk back up to the front and stand in a line with about 8 people in front of me (the majority had cart fulls) and one was exceptionally rude to others. I asked if someone could please help me because I was in serious pain, and I did not think I would make it til it was my turn. (I have never asked for help, but I needed it today - that is why I had done a curb pickup in the first place). To make matters worse, when they finally got around to helping me - They did not give me a the Coupon discount of 20%. I called the 1-800 line - That person could not understand simple English statements "please cancel my online order". His solution was to return to the store and ask for help - REALLY???? I have severe light sensitivity which causes me problems. I attempted to scan a coupon and the associate tells me to turn my phone on in light mode, my partner switched it to dark mode to keep my eyes from burning. Which is fine. The issue is she felt the need to go up to another associate and laugh at me and joke about me and how dim my phone was. Right beside me. I got back in my car and just cried...I'll never go back. I like Michaels in general. It's similar like most craft stores but what it specialize is more with scrapbooking and jewelry making. It's not super busy but the staff is always friendly. They are clean and organized. You can download a 40% off coupon for regularly priced itme and use it. My to-go craft store is Hobby Lobby but what Michael's have over Hobby Lobby are longer hours (an hour later) and open on Sunday's (Hobby Lobby is closed). read more

Came for 4 frames. The service for doing the framing themselves was like $8 a piece and would take around 3-5 days, which seems exorbitant. So, I just got the frames and did it myself. I was surprised at the register. I thought it'd be $10 per frame, but it rang up $5 per frame. Which was an uber-cool treat. This is the store I go to primarily for non "art" crafts; knitting, beading, scrapbooking, ect. They have quality cheap yarn, and as a knitter, that's always nice. Whenever I'm pursuing a new craft, I come here for cheap supplies first before diving full on. Their paint selection isn't bad at all either, and I do come here for paint when can't get to Pearl or Sam Flax. I've never had any problems with the staff or manager; this is not a store I come to for help on anything, so my only interaction with store clerks has been at the register. From the previous review and my own experience, I wouldn't suggest coming here with questions about specific crafts; just come for the good prices and the basics of what you need. read more
