I passed Grandma's Candle Shop a million times and thought why not stop in? Maybe they'll have a…read moreholiday clearance on some seasonal favorites. Nope, one peek and I quickly grabbed my phone (& holy oil.) It's a small store with the scent of incense wafting through the air. A stern looking lady (who was not my Grandma) stood watch over everyone. The first thing that struck me were the handwritten signs barking orders like, "Don't write numbers in these books. This isn't a library, books are for sale! No refunds. No mixing oils except Myrrh and Frankincense" etc. Ok... The candles clearly aren't being purchased for their beauty or fragrance. I was fascinated and a little scared. You can put roots on people and make them fall in love with you by burning a 'Come Back to Me' candle. 'Break Up' has the opposite effect. You can cast spells, get a miracle, rid your house of evil (Run Devil Run & Exorcist) and get Quick Money rich! There's also a Jinx Removing soap and Court Case shampoo. Prices range from $8 to $15. I asked the sales lady 1) if they were all the same candles in different bottles, 2) if "Grandma" made them and 3) if this was a voodoo/black magic shop. I mean the skull and cat shaped candles were a dead giveaway. The answer was no... And she clearly didn't know what the Pull Out candle was for. But she said she burned her Libra Zodiac and money candles. And you're still working??? She said they get a lot of African and Caribbean customers but it was empty. Probably because there were no Christmas specials (sad face.) There were gift sets. I left after I was caught snapping pics... In short, Grandma's is no Yankee Candle but if you're a witch or know what the High John Conqueror or Dragon Blood is for, it just might be your jam!

We ordered a Los Tres Amigos which is a 3 dip platter of salsa, queso, and guacamole. All 3 were pretty decent. For my main, I had the Playa del Carmen (1 fish taco and 2 shrimp enchiladas with refried beans and rice). Everything was absolutely delicious and generous portions so I had leftovers. Since I knew I had time to kill on a Sunday before my appointments, I decided to pop in and shop a bit. First, know that the parking lot is SMALLLLL. I used to live in the neighborhood so I should have known better but, sheesh. I arrived around 10:45am, only minutes after they opened and there were at least a dozen people in line and every parking space was taken. I love that for the biz though! I ended up parking in the lot across the street and walking over. I think I stood in line for less than 20 minutes, it wasn't too bad and the weather was great so it was a breeze. The staff was welcoming in guests in small groups, so I figured it was tight in there but whoo! It was an intimate space, definitely boutique-style. We weren't packed in like sardines but luckily, patience and politeness kept the flow going. Items were beautifully laid out and presented on various tables. Earrings, brooches, bracelets, rings, etc. There were different metals, gemstones and more available, all lovely pieces of vintage items for sale. Prices varied, with most items being over $18. I liked the variety! I wish there was even more, but liked that it wasn't packed with too many items, you could see that each was handpicked and sourced with love. I ended up leaving with a dainty gold/silver watch, two David Yurman-esque rings, and a beautiful gold bracelet. At a total of $89, I think I made out quite well. I definitely plan to go back for another pop-up and see how I make out.

Those are the books sell for a lot of money here, especially if the writer is no longer alive. I bought a used copy of a book (hardcover) by Michael Lewis, not signed by him. Michael Lewis is from New Orleans but lives in the SFBA. Why are Southerners such good writers? Especially in a part of the country that tends to be very undereducated. I saw Forrest Gump (hardcover) signed by the author too. Now I know what Winston Groom's signature looks like. Winston Groom is from Alabama but born in D.C., and he eventually moved away from the South to NYC. Of course, lots of David Sedaris books here. He's another Southern writer from North Carolina but born in NY. He lives in England now (where his mother is from).
