Wow 12 years ago me did not enjoy this place. 12 years later me is in her 30s and absolutely loved it HAHAHA My mom made a joke about how I probably like it now because I'm old and when you get old you enjoy stuff like this.... Sadly it is true and definitely the gamey smell of the goat wasn't as bothersome... Comparing the photos from 12 years ago it's very evident that vegetables were cheaper then HAHAHA Also -1 because the servers aren't as nice ... well I'm not sure if it's a norm for Korean lady servers to be kind of rude but be prepared for them to snap back at you if you ask for anything extra-- just wanted some more perrilla seeds, please don't hurt me. The sauce they serve really adds the kick to the goat dishes. The mustard definitely helps with the gamey smell and the vinegar adds a little oomph! I also ordered the acorn jelly cold soup (wow ... that doesn't sound tasty at all in English) but it's a summer staple and I highly recommend it as an appetizer! It's refreshing and really opens up your palate. They make fried rice at the end and I'm sure it's a widely known fact now that Korean eat rice for dessert haha "K-dessert" = fried rice or porridge haha don't skip the fried rice! Unfortunately I was to quick with my fingers instead of my head when it came to the food to give a review lol but we did order the goat soup with perilla leaf 10/10, the seafood pancake 9/10 and soondae. 8/10 After you eat the goat soup they make kimchi fried rice with the soup of it and it's super yummy!!!!! I had one of the worst dining experiences of my life here last night. The broth bulgogi was the worst version I have ever tasted, and the yukgaejang was so bland that I honestly thought I was eating bean sprout soup. The goat stew was slightly better than the other dishes, but overall everything was disappointing. What bothered me even more was the service. There were two servers (one of whom appeared to be the owner), and they seemed interested only in taking care of a table of middle-aged men drinking alcohol. They were smiling and attentive to them while completely ignoring us. Our food arrived before any side dishes, and everything was brought out at once regardless of whether it would get cold. I have never been to a Korean restaurant where the banchan arrived with the main dishes. Later, I almost felt like they were trying to delay bringing the side dishes because they knew how bad the food was. When we ordered rice, we were told there were only two bowls of white rice left. Without even asking for my preference, they simply put a bowl of barley rice in front of me. The kimchi was the only thing that tasted decent. When I asked for a refill, no one even came to the table. They just continued chatting among themselves and shouted, "We're out. That was the last of it," without even an apology. To make things worse, when servers from neighboring businesses came in for dinner, they were given side dishes immediately and received much friendlier service than we did. The atmosphere felt more like a drinking bar than a family restaurant. I was embarrassed to have brought my daughter there. Honestly, I would rather eat instant cup noodles than ever return to this place. The restaurant felt dirty, the service felt careless, and the staff seemed completely uninterested in their customers. I didn't want to leave a tip, but I didn't want my daughter to see me act that way, so I left one anyway. Looking back, even that money feels wasted. This place should probably market itself as a bar rather than a restaurant. If anyone is considering visiting, I strongly recommend not bringing your family or children. This was, without question, the worst restaurant experience of my life. The restaurant wasn't even busy, but they chose not to make more rice because they were worried about having leftovers. I actually overheard them praising each other for that decision, as if it were something to be proud of. I honestly cannot understand how they expect to run a business with that kind of mindset. Instead of focusing on serving customers properly, they seemed more concerned about saving a small amount of rice than providing the food people were paying for. To me, it felt as though they wanted to take customers' money without putting in the effort to provide proper service or a complete dining experience. Their attitude toward customers was very disappointing and difficult to understand. Even though their posted closing time was 10:00 PM, last call was already at 8:00 PM, and by then they had run out of plain rice and side dishes. One star is too generous. Our family is especially fond of their noodles, and they never disappoint -- always flavorful and satisfying. The service and ambiance is great. Very cozy and authentic but this kimchi jjiggae is a hard pass. They might have rushed the soup and added a bit too much fish sauce because sourness and kimchi flavor didn't get into the soup. The pork belly in the soup was nice and crunchy. Been here a couple times, got the black goat stew. Goat tends to be a little gamy, however, braising it in the spicy stew takes away from the gaminess. (Also eat it with the sauce (so good)) Though some might think it's a little too gamy, i think it's delicious. Perfect for a cold night. The buchimgae was some of the best I've had, perfectly crispy. Food is good! Lots of seating area. Never crowded. Been here two times. I have ordered the black goat stew (not pictured) and the octopus. Side dish choices were okay. Our waitress seemed pretty nice. I don't like that they leave the door open cause the flies come in. We L.O.V.E. Mirak, food and ahjummas!! It looks like a hole in the wall kinda restaurant but they have the best black goat "everything" (stew, iron plate, boiled) + kimchi mixed rice with the stew & iron plate after! Yum!! Our family spent our Thanksgiving with Mirak and enjoyed everything we ordered, all 3 goats, kalguksu for the little ones. Banchans are always delicious and the kalguksu soup was phenomenal!! Didn't expect such deep and rich flavor from the kalguksu! As for service, all the ahjummas are great fun! The servers were extremely rude and lacked basic manners. I called to place a to-go order, but the person who answered didn't say a word, so I wasn't even sure if they had picked up. I said 'Hello?' and was met with an annoyed tone, telling me to speak. I tried to order the goat soup first and wanted to ask a few questions before ordering the rest, but before I could even finish speaking, she tried to hang up. I had to quickly stop them to ask my questions and complete the order. The prices aren't cheap, and I've never had such an unpleasant experience just trying to place an order. I know this place is known for its poor service, so I tried to be understanding, but the attitude was really unacceptable. I'm never going back. When my friend and I entered into this restaurant, we were the only non Koreans! Maybe because it is conveniently located in the same plaza as a Korean supermarket, this place seems to be a local favorite for many Koreans. It was not even lunch time (2:00 pm on a Saturday) and this place was busy. There were two tables with more elderly folks, one table with a middle age couple and one table with a mom, dad and two kids. Both my friend and I were previously introduced to this place by different Korean friends that we know. We got Gamjatang (pork rib and potato soup) and leek pancake. Gamtajang's soup broth was amazing! (Although I am not Korean, but even a foodie who loves Korean food and had many many Gamtajang before...I think I know what a good soup taste like :) .) Although the meat was a bit dry, but the soup and the amount we got makes up for it! The leek pancake was also delicious! I was glad we ordered this, although I do want to try their seafood pancake. One reason why this place has such a low review is due to their service. I am not one who will give low rating due to service..I am here for the food, not for the service. First of, there was only one waitress on a busy Saturday afternoon. Secondly, I do notice the difference between how we were treated vs. how the other Korean customers were treated. She was definitely a little more tentative to the Korean customers. Nevertheless, our food still came and we still had a great time eating some very authentic tasting Korean food. Food is great but the customer service is beyond ridiculous. This is for the lady with short curly hair. She talks to customers like they're kids. My dad clearly looks older than her but she was speaking informally to him. You shouldn't be speaking informally at all to customers at all to begin with unless maybe if they're your friends and family. What was even worse was when we asked for cold water - we asked for cold water once and another server brought it to us with no problem. But when we asked for cold water again from that short curly hair lady, she brought the whole bucket of cold water and just poured it in my dad's warm water cup. So when we asked if she can bring us a new cold water, not mix it in our warm water, she refused to and said "you know how many cups you guys are using already? We need to do the dishes ourselves. Just drink warm water, it's healthier for you anyways." And actually never brought our cold water.. What the hell? Im not mad we never got the cold water but Im mad that she thinks that type of customer service is okay. I understand theres servers with playful personalities who jokes around with customers but you still need to do your job and bring the things the customers ask you. This isnt your playground and we're not your little kids. We love mirak but she's the sole reason why we are never going back. I'd rather drive an hour to LA for better service. Very Authentic Korean restaurant. I had the ginseng chicken soup. This soup is more of a porridge, with small whole chicken with bones. The meat falls off the bone easily. They serve it with sides if Kimchi and other pickled items. The soup has a side of salt and pepper. It had good flavor but would be bland with out the salt to develop the flavor. This is a more food than I could eat. My co worker got the bulgogi and rice which was perfect lunch portion. I thought this was a cook it yourself Korean BBQ I didn't see that option and no grill tops at table. They do a have lunch special for one of black goat soup which is their specialty. Classic Korean restaurant. Good food, terrible service (mostly because they are understaffed like crazy.) Black goat stew is probably the most popular dish but I'm not a big fan of goat. Banchan is simple but decent. I had the oo-gu-ji galbi tang. Once again good, not the best I've had but good enough to eat and enjoy. The bulgogi bibimbap seemed good. The workers were all really nice to us but they seemed sooo busy/rushed even though it wasn't packed so several times we had to flag people down. Just dined in at this place thinking it'd be same as the one in LA. Mirak is not your typical Korean restaurant with just tofu or bbq. In fact, I feel that Mirak is more of a Korean home-style traditional restaurant geared towards and older audience. Not that this matters, but my friend and I were the youngest people in the restaurant on a Saturday night. I ordered beef cabbage stew that came with a bowl of white plain rice. The two paired nicely together because the cabbage stew has a hint of a spicy after taste. The entree is simple, yet tasty. If you're considering ordering this dish, I hope you like cabbage and onions because there are LOTS of them. The beef is very tender, but very few pieces, I counted 3. Service is pretty good, they came by to check on us once and refilled our side dishes. My favorite sides included the mashed potato salad and the green pancakes. Lastly, my absolute favorite part of the meal was the complimentary cold pumpkin juice at the end of the meal. The lady came by and brought a pitcher asking if we wanted to try some. What can I say about this food? It's actually one of my favorite Korean foods (black goat soup) from its many many great plates, dishes and soups! Black goat soup is my "anytime" of the day soup that always hits the spot! You can't go wrong at Mirak, since they specialize in the soup. The location itself actually is very clean and the servers are always on the move, very aware and friendly with service. So everything about the place is good. When my parents and I are craving black goat stew, we always come here because not only is it absolutely delicious, but the service is good too. It helps that they are so timely and in tune with the flow. They notice when we are running low on greens in the stew and will either put more in or if you ask, they will. The portion size is more than enough, especially since you can use any leftover rice (or get more) to make fried rice at the end with the leftover stew.
