The food is delicious. I've never seen moussaka presented in a little crock like a French onion soup. This dish was so rich and the textures with the bottom potatoes being caramelized and the top bechamel being so pillowy soft were delightful. The moussaka comes with a side of Greek salad (with creamy feta) and grilled bread. We also got the dolmades, which were fresh and tasty, and the calamari, which was really good. For a cocktail, I highly recommend their mangkas: orange, cherry, honey, haraki, bourbon, bitters, and ginger ale. For dessert, some baklava: a good amount of honey, sweet but not too syrupy, and nice layers. I would highly recommend this spot for a fun date night or to celebrate a special occasion. There is also a small bar. The server was happy to answer any questions about the menu and took time to explain all the desserts. We did have to ask for water a couple of times, but then we got a pitcher of it, which was nice. Next time, I'd be sure that we make a reservation to sit in the cozy dining area rather than by the window with the high tops. read more

Small spot on Shrewsbury St. Inside decor was nice despite the somewhat small space. We had reservations for 5 before a show. The entire restaurant was empty aside from 2 tables when we arrived. They crammed us literally 6 inches away from 1 of the 2 tables filled. I initially was taken aback but the two ladies sitting next to us kindly slid their table over a tad to give us more space (we were beside a wall to the other side near the door). Honestly - I'm glad I didn't say anything because by 5:30 the entire restaurant was filled and it was nice to have nobody on one side of us. They served bread drizzled with olive oil with some olives to start. There was nothing particularly wrong with the bread, however, being a Greek restaurant, it may have made a lot more sense to serve fresh warm pita as the starter bread course. We ordered the Feta Saganaki to start. That was absolutely the star of the entire show! Very crispy on the outside with a hot gooey feta cheese on the inside, drizzled with ample amounts of honey, and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Absolutely to die for. I started with the Greek sangria - it was fine, but nothing special. My husband got one of the three espresso martini options and he really enjoyed his drink. The restaurant got busy very quickly and it didn't seem they had enough waitstaff on. Everyone was sort of running around with their heads cut off, and service was slow and inattentive at times. For dinner, I had the moussaka. It was very salty and the béchamel sauce on top was sort of gelatinous. It didn't taste bad, but it was a very odd consistency. My husband got the kebab plate with steak and chicken. It was served over a bed of rice with a small side salad. Nobody came back to the table to ask how our meals were after serving us. We really needed salt and pepper, which was not on the table and my husband wanted to order another drink. We had to ask two different servers before we got the drink, but never got the salt or pepper. We took a piece of baklava home to enjoy after the show. It was delicious! We are not in the area and it's unlikely that we would be back to this restaurant in the future. I love gyros. I could eat them every day. Authentic gyros, that is. Unfortunately, what is being served at Meze is far from authentic. The tzatziki sauce was completely flavorless. No garlic. No cucumber. I'm not sure what that white sauce was in the gyro, but it wasn't tzatziki. The pork was old. I think it was cooked earlier in the week and refried to warm it up before throwing it inside the pita. It was dry, tough and chewy. Almost broke a tooth on one of the pieces, and I'm not exaggerating. The pita was good. And so were the fries. Unfortunately, those were the only positives of the dish. We have been working hard to hit all the restaurants on Shrewsbury st in Worcester. We finally made it to this Greek restaurant. Small, but cozy place with a nice bar and some outside seating. Our waitress was top notch, sweet person, with great accent. She took time to explain different options and food choices. She convinced us to try the Boyourdi, and we were glad she did. Tasteful, spicy appetizer with homemade pita bread. We then moved on to the main course. I had the Mediterranean Cod. A perfectly cooked fish dish with feta, tomatoes and onions. Wife had Shrimp Saganaki. A spicy shrimp dish with fresh pita. We both ate every bit and then finished with a giant piece of Baklava. Absolutely impeccable! Called ahead to make a reservation for a group of 11 and got a FREE private room. Walked it and it was absolutely gorgeous and spacious. Service was all around outstanding with staff that is attending, kind, and knowledgeable. Food was delicious. Every dish was well cooked and full with flavor. Everything was absolutely incredible. Fresh and delicious Greek food in a beautiful location! We came here for the first time shortly after they reopened because it made a good halfway point between my parents in CT and us in Boston. They have a lovely dining area inside that opens up to the outside via an enormous window, so we felt safer dining inside during COVID-19. We ordered a big variety of dishes, most of them very good. The good: -Tzatziki: The best tzatziki I've ever had. This was amazing--thick, creamy, and perfectly salted. -Melitzanosalata: Very good. If you like baba ghanoush, you will enjoy this. -Tirokafteri: Rich and wonderful. I couldn't decide if I liked this more or the tzatziki, but both were phenomenal. -Village Salad: Light and refreshing. The feta was authentic and really brought us back to Greece. -Calamari Salad: This is off-the-menu and came on the house because we had tried to order both the marithes and the grilled octopus, neither of which were in stock. This was absolutely delicious. The squid was incredibly tender, and the balsamic vinaigrette was perfect. -Lamb Shank: Super tender and delicious. We really enjoyed the sides as well. -Moussaka: I thought this was good, but my mother thought it was terrific. She finished this mostly on her own. The bad: -Smoked Mackerel: This was the one big miss of the day. My husband ordered this not realizing it was going to be canned fish. We tried a bit of it, but it wasn't for us. -Fried Calamari: The batter was very thick, although it was nicely seasoned. This was also pretty oily, and they could have drained it better before serving. I'd prefer a lighter batter. We were sad they were out of the octopus and smelts, as that was the main reason we came. We'd definitely come back to try these. I also have to give credit to our waiter who was excellent and a real charmer haha. I will never forget the time I went here about five years back -- I had a celebratory dinner with friends. We ordered dips, their meat sampler, and a fantastic charcuterie board. When we were done, there were some odds and ends left, enough for a little snack. We asked for it to go, and they came back with a much larger container, and heavier, too. They explained that they accidentally dropped the leftovers and made us an entirely new snack box to take back so that we wouldn't be hungry. True Greek hospitality! In a world where top-notch service is what earns praise, followers, loyalists, and happy, repeat customers, Meze Estiatorio in Worcester recently offered one of the very worst experience ever. Truly, it would be hard to top this bad service experience, which I had to give a credit card number just to reserve a table, lest I cancel and have to pay a $10 fine. I'd been to Meze in the past and the food, service and atmosphere had all been fine. On this night we had a 6 p.m. reservation made through Resy which offers the opportunity for special instructions. I included information about needing to complete the meal by 7:15 to get to our next event. We had no intention of ordering many courses or meals that had special requests that would have made that turnaround difficutl. Here's just a "SHORT" list of failings: Dirty menus on the table when seated Table next to use seated and ordered within minutes 10 minutes before our server arrives Drink order taken, 10 minutes for drinks to arrive (a bottled beer and a bottled mineral water) Food order taken Dirty menus still left on table 40 minutes for a SALAD appetizer to arrive and dirty menus to be cleared Other servers buzzing around all the other tables, other diners being taken care of promptly Our server ignoring us, standing at the back station staring out. Never once checked on us, asked us about more drinks or anything else to ease our discomfort. No meals at our table still at the 1 hour mark Table next to us had already had drinks, appetizers, a salad, dinner meals, and were at dessert already Other tables around us seated, ordering, eating, paying, leaving I complain at hostess station Meals arrive at 7:05 The only thing servicable about this meal was that the check was delivered right away - because I asked for it when the meals were served. It was blatently obvious to everyone near us that something was wrong. Did our order not get put in? Did our server make a mistake and have to do it again? The kitchen was clearly on task and not slow. It was embarassing and infuriating. We scarfed down a few bites, paid up and left. There is a reason good restaurants have staff work in teams. Meze clearly does not do that because not one other staff member checked on us during the whole time, not to clear the dirty menus, not to check on water or drinks, etc. We were offered no apologies, and no concessions on the $100+ bill, nothing. Even in a time when it is difficult to get wait staff, Meze clearly had a number of other competent individuals working - but each in their own world. Meze requires that you give a credit card if you make a reservation so that they will charge you $10 if you cancel. Take my advice and don't even bother going. read more

I came to the first iteration of this restaurant a few years ago, and I liked it...but this was a huge step up! Definitely one of the best, most authentically Greek menus I've seen in New England. The flavors were great. I would totally come back. Here's a few thoughts: Eat family style. That's the Greek way. For a table of four we got: Meze plate (3 dips), horiatiki salad, bouyourdi (baked feta with tomatoes and peppers. This is one of my all time favs), loukaniko (sausage with fries), and stuffed tomatoes and peppers. 1. Meze plate is great. The dip portions are on the smaller side. We split it between four people which worked because we got a ton of other food, but it's hard to know beforehand because some places give you a plate size portion of dips and others don't. 2. The bouyourdi was everyone's favorite. 3. I hardly ever find stuffed peppers (yemista) on the menu, and I'm so glad they kept this dish! It's delicious. Also, the fasolakia (green beans) are an underrated food. These were excellent!! 4. Tirokefteri, spicy whipped feta, was very nice. The tzatziki was also good. 5. They have a solid alcohol selection, including wine, beer (local beer and Greek), cocktails, and classics like ouzo/tsipouro. My only sad note was that the owner (the son) seemed unenthusiastic to speak Greek with me. This is the primary reason I go to Greek owned establishments - where else can a non-Greek get to practice?! Alas. I'll start off by saying I'm only giving two stars because the service was excellent. Our waitress was attentive in all regards. That said, the quality of the food was not good. My wife and I ordered the calamari, the oven baked feta, souvlaki and a couple drinks--a white wine and a Mythos. The calamari was the worst we've had in a Greek restaurant. Definitely not fresh and the batter was like from onion rings. Odd. The baked feta dish was incredibly spicy--inedible spicy. The souvlaki wasn't really traditional souvlaki and the wine was $12 for a $8 pour. All in all, $100 bill for two and left disappointed. I've been eating here since it opened ... and it's always been good but lately, they've stepped up their game even further and the quality and décor are now really good for the Worcester area! When they opened, people told me that the chef and his wife are from a small town in Greece and came here to start a new life ... meaning the dishes are authentic and brought over from their very popular village restaurant in Greece. The biggest flaw of Meze in the past was it's décor ... it looked more like a cheap dance club than a restaurant. They've changed all that. Now, if they could only bring it to the outside area and spruce up the outside tables a bit for the summer. Now, it has a white and blue Greek Island vibe and is worthy of Instagram vs. Restaurant Impossible when it comes to décor. What a difference ambiance makes! The food here is good to amazing, depending on what you get. They make fantastic lightly battered seafood such as Calimari ... this is true Greek style vs. what you'd find in a Massachusetts restaurant. This isn't small rings of chewy, crunchy squid. This is larger rings of tender tempura battered seafood and little tentacles more like the 'frito misto' style. You don't need gross ketchup-y marinara sauce with these ... a squeeze of lemon and a dusting of salt and all is good. They have grilled octopus, which is amazing. The village salad (though expensive for a bowl of chopped cucumber, tomato and onion) is very fresh and seasoned well. I find the chicken or pork skewers to be a little on the tough/rubbery side but my girlfriend likes them ... so we will let you settle the tie. The rice pilaf here is the best I've ever had. They even have a homemade gyro sandwich on the menu with souvlaki. It goes perfect with a Mythos beer ... I can't tell you how nice it is to find a decent gyro on a menu in the US. That's one of the things I miss most about Greece. If you order the Hatorki Salad, save some of the chopped veggies to put in the gyro. The moussaka was just okay ... it was too heavy for my liking and was basically a bowl of melty cheese with some meat and potatoes. Again, just my opinion but a bit heavy for my liking. Desserts here are awesome and unlike most places that say they are Greek restaurant and just offer a pre-made Baklava, you'll find several authentic (and very sweet) desserts here. The wine list and beer list is really something to behold. There are several types of Greek liquors, in addition to a few different Ouzo choices. You'll also find Greek beer (in bottles ... if only they'd get Alpha or Mythos on draft!) and a huge selection of Greek wines. You cannot get any more authentic than the wine list of menu than Meze. Overall, this is a great spot. It can get crowded but the layout of the restaurant is much, much better than the older days. The bar is off to the corner and the dining room is much less loud because it is separate. Outside, prepare to hear Greek being spoken, cigarettes being smoked and lots of laughing and conversation. If you can't get to Greece, honestly, this is the next best thing in Massachusetts. read more

Incredible!! If I could I would give it more than 5 stars! First time, we came as a group of 11 and the workers were so nice and gave us a table right away! We got a room with two tables, one for kids and one for adults. The decoration is so gorgeous and everything is organized perfectly! Now, the food. The appetizers are so delicious even the bread and olives are so fresh and good, all of the appetizers were so delicious to the point where we ordered 3 orders of each! All of the main meals were so pretty to look at and even more tasty than the looks! Second time we came it was only a small group of 5 and we got the same treatment and food as the last time. Meze is truly a mixed bag of an experience. I would personally love to experience whatever anyone who has given this place a 5 has. I'd like to start off by saying that everything I've ever eaten at Meze tastes good to great. The flavors are very food, and you can yell that the cooks must enjoy what they're doing. I've had the lamb chop, the paidakia, the calamari, the pastichio, the lemon potatoes, and the rice pilaf from their menu. Everything was hot and tasty. Let's get into the main issue i have with the food, the price. The prices are quite extreme. Now it's my understanding from research and experience that restaurants typically charge 300% of what it costs to prepare the food you ordered. Now I highly doubt that a single lamb chop with a scoop of rice pilaf with some veggies is costs over $11 to make when you get everything ordered in bulk as a restaurant. I find a single plate of food without extremely unique or hard to get food items ever being worth $34. To give another example, a plate of fried calamari served over some romaine lettuce with a lemon slice costs $18. In my experience, Meze has service that can be described as decent at best. The floor seems under staffed even when it isn't. There was one time where there was 3 people on the floor with a total 6 tables being used and I kid you not, no one ever came to ask how my food was, or if I needed a refill on my glass of water once. Now I never high expectations for personal service from waiting/hosting staff because restaurant floors can be hectic, but when you can literally split 2 tables per person, I find it hard to excuse the lack of attentiveness to customer experience besides taking your order and giving you your bill 15 minutes after you finished eating. All in all, Meze can be summarized as a nice place to eat with a friend or a date. The food is good and it feels a tad bit fancy at the right moments. However, there needs to be acknowledgement of the very high prices and the very slow service. read more

Surprisingly good authentic home-made Greek food served with happiness. Dolmades are fresh made and served warm with a little tzatziki- outrageously delicious and accompanied with the Tarama I was already thinking, "this is close to the best Greek food I've eaten in the US." I had the Octopus for my main dish - good sized portion, tender and tasty, served with lemon and olives - but nothing special. The spanakopita on the other hand was superb, and the phyllo dough light and crisp. Feta Saganaki was delicious too and sprinkled with black sesame seeds and honey- To our surprise (and enjoyment) our attentive waiter Nico (all knowing) gave us dessert on the house - two free baklava "to go"! Such a delicious find!!!!! My husband and I made a last minute decision to try this last weekend, and it did not disappoint! It was so good, we even met friends again tonight since we couldn't get enough!! Love the pastitsio and moussaka, but I think my overall favorites were the things we shared! The meze plate with tzatziki and the feta dip (tirokafteri - my favorite!! It was so amazing, I asked for an extra order of this to go!!!). Tonight we were introduced to the bouyourdi which is a melted feta dip with tomatoes that is to die for. Also the desserts were amazing; I ordered the filo stuffed with custard, drizzled with orange and lemon syrups. Bright citrusy dessert without being too sweet! Well here I am at a dining place in Worcester. It should be called MESSY ESTIATORIO a Greek restaurant after visiting friends near by.... It is hard to find decent Greek food and was open to trying daring yet only disappointed. No Octopus and feta salad was as it sat in fridge over night soggy tomatoes. Sat at the bar thinking prompt service yet not the case, although if bartender was a car salesman he would do ok as a handshake to me always means I am about to get screwed!! When two meals are ordered they come out together as they did but this guy takes it upon himself in unscrupulous intent and gives my meal to a girl sitting at the end of the bar!! I go to restroom to cool off only to see a rat dead in a trap on the way and it smelled of urine, and dirty with no soap ,I can only Imagine the kitchen. Overpriced for the portion size. I had the lamb chops,and there was more potatoes than there was lamb. The chops were rib chops which were small instead of kidney chops which are a better option. We just passed by the Worcester area and gave this place a try since the menu looked awesome. Fried freshwater smelts were superb and very buttery. The grilled chicken on rice pilaf was yummy. The grilled octopus was really dry so the server was kind to take that off the bill, which I appreciated. Service was wonderful. Greek food is one of my favorites and this place does a good job. If you like Fried Fish I recommend the Marithes. I grew up on Fried Smelts so I loved seeing them on the menu. We came because our newly minted grad (St. Johns) likes greek food, and we were in starvation mode following a boringly LONG graduation ceremony with not enough energy to make it to Framingham. A Greek foodie God recommended the place as "legit", so "why not"? I'm going to get some unpleasantries out of the way... Kyle, our server was the cat's meow. HILARIOUS! A darling and super professional. But the kitchen is PAINFULLY SLOW. SUPER SLOW. IT HURT TO SIT ON MY ARS SLOW. Food was... OK. Some things were delicious, like the lamb shank, and the roasted whole fish, eyeballs and all with perfect veggies. But the gyro... flavorful and bone dry pork. Ditto for the pork slouvaki. KILLER TZATZIKI. KILLER. Beautiful charcuterie plate. Calamari? Fried perfectly. It's relatively new, so give and take some time. I hope the put pasticchio on the menu. Great wine list. This will be brief and strictly my opinion based on a recent visit. WTF: They charge a 4% fee on top of your meal if you use a credit card. Can you F'n believe that AND they do not tell you until you get your bill. WHAT BS!!! The food was bland AND they didnt have flan, what self respecting Greek restaurant doesn't have flan. Stay away, BOYCOTT this place if for no other reason than they want to charge you more for using a CC. Update..Upon reflection I feel I need to add caution to others to read your bill carefully to ensure nothing gets slipped in. When we got our bill there was a bottle of wine costing $30 on it and all we had were soft drinks. The excuse was it was an error but having had the evening to recount our experience and the addition of a fee for using a CC I cant bring myself to believe it was an error but hey I dont trust anyone. How could the error have occurred? The chain of events that would have had to take place makes it hard for me to believe it was an innocent error. It may have been, I leave open the possibility however remote, but after getting hit with a never before seen CC fee for dining out I cant help but feel that it was something else. We will never go back not just because the food was tasteless (main dishes) but the lack of transparency about the fee and the mysterious bottle of vino appearing on the bill are what broke the camels back. I question the legality of imposing a CC fee without prior disclosure and consent. In future should someplace try this on me again I will refuse to pay the up charge and welcome what follows. What happened to the laws that restricted businesses from charging more for those who use a CC? If businesses and govt want to move to a cashless society then eat the fee, but if this BS is gonna be the result we will eat home. read more

Aside from the deplorable service, I am not certain the fish is fresh. My companion got a fish dish and it overpowered the entire table. I had the saganaki and the Feta saganaki. Both tasted like they were old, like the smell feta or certain cheeses get when they've been open awhile and smell like feet. Both dishes fell flat and needed a little something to elevate them, other than just being put on a plate. I got the gyro plate with tzatziki on the side and a skewer of pork souvlaki. I know Greek food and was hoping it was like home. They did not put my tzatziki on the side, and you may think I'm nit-picking but some places make horrible tzatziki or it just makes the plate a mess and I wanted to try it first. The attention to detail was lousy. The souvlaki tasted like a barnyard, I do not know how else to describe it but if you've tasted pork that has this off-flavor, you know what I mean. The gyro meat was fine and I did like that. On to the service, the service at Meze is absolutely horrid. The wait staff are thoughtless, rude, and treated my adult companion like a child. Here's a few tips for the staff: speak audibly with good diction, get orders correct --detail matters, don't tell a the person who didn't order wine to tell the person who ordered the wine that you are out, and don't put items out of the reach of the person you are serving. HOLY MOLY!!! After months of driving by this place, we decided to make a reservation and do dinner tonight. I feel like an IDIOT for not coming here sooner, because this place is instantly in my top 5 favorite restaurants. I am by no means an expert, but much like Gene Simmons, my tongue works, and I can say that Meze easily has the best Greek food that I've ever had. The interior is super cozy. A sprawling bar adorns the left side of the restaurant, and various tables and window booths are on the right. We were sat immediately a few minutes before our reservation time, and were brought over a large glass bottle of ice cold water. We placed our drink orders and an appetizer, and while we waited we gnoshed on their amazing, lightly grilled bread (accompanied by kalamata olives if that's up your alley). We opted for the Meze plate with 3 dips for an appetizer, and chose the tzatziki, the Melitzanosalata, and the Tirokafteri, which came with plenty of grilled pita slices. The tzatziki was the best either of us has ever had, but the real star was the Tirokafteri. It was basically a whipped concoction of feta and chili peppers, and I could eat it by the GALLON! It was so good, in fact, that we got some to go after our meal. The spice was the PERFECT amount. Not overpowering at all, and this is coming from a guy who cheats when eating an Atomic Fireball (i.e. I'm a wuss). Our meals were the delicious Pastitsio - which is like a Greek American chop suey - and the even BETTER Moussaka, which is kind of like Shepherds Pie hand made by Jesus Christ. Gordon Ramsay himself would weep at the sheer perfection of this dish! Our desserts were the Koak, which was kind of a play on a Boston Creme Pie, and the EXCEPTIONAL Galaktoboureko, which was a custard filled filo dough contraption, soaked in lemon and orange syrup. I'd have to get my Masters in the English language to find words worthy enough to describe how yummy that dessert was! Our server, Natalie, also deserves special mention. Attentive without being overbearing, and was happy to answer our asanine questions. The bartender also deserves special credit, because our cocktails were to die for. I can't believe that it's taken me so long to come here. This will absolutely become a regular spot for us, and it will be for you as well. My girlfriend and I went here to celebrate my birthday and first thing I can say is that the vibe is intimate, the servers are friendly, the food was good, and the grilled octopus is a must try. The reason I couldn't give a higher review is because there was some sort of miscommunication throughout the night regarding our orders. The server brought out an appetizer that we didn't ask for, but let us keep which we can't complain about. My biggest disappointment was the the mixup with my entree. I ordered the sea bass which I was totally craving. 30 minutes after our appetizers were finished, my girlfriend got her food and I was served a different dish from what I ordered. I was told that a correction for my meal would be take another 30 minutes. To avoid the wait, I ended up ordering a something else instead but left still craving my original order. Oh well. Note: they did compensate us for the mishap throughout the night. It may have been an isolated experience, and maybe I was a little more disappointed because it was my birthday. We have been coming to meze for a few years, and absolutely love it. Great warm lively atmosphere, with delicious authentic Greek cuisine. The staff is welcoming and so happy to see you, it feels as if you're going to a family members for dinner. The spanakopita is a must have appetizer, hands down the best we've ever had. 10/10 recommend. The mixed grill dinner is a perfect choice for a couple. Came here as it was recommended by a close friend while I was in town for the holidays. My friends come here often (they are Greek) and it is the go to. We ordered several things of the menu and every single thing that came from the kitchen was delicious. Sam, Dimitri and the rest of the kitchen staff were so welcoming. When we couldn't decide on dessert they brought out three of the desserts that were all so delicious.
