I have heard so many great things about this place and mehhh. You can see the food in the pics, it was just ok and nothing to write home about. Service was ok I guess. As soon as we sat down we smelled something sour and sweet, we think due to the rag they washed the plastic table cloths with so all I could smell through dinner was these smell. Can we just talk about how perfect Mezcal is?! Well, it is! AMBIANCE: Love it! The facade of the building has great bright tile and a sidewalk patio. Inside there's exposed brick, bright painted walls, and the coolest light fixtures. The tables have fun vinyl coverings. There's plenty of little accents throughout! SERVICE: Alfredo was just the best! He checked back with me just enough, gave me great advice on my taco choices, and ensured my drinks were never empty. Excellent! LIBATIONS: I sipped on the ancho margarita, because why not!? It was perfectly crafted with just the right amount of spice. There's plenty of boozy delights available for your choosing - I mean they do feature a full bar after all! SUSTENANCE: Chips and salsa arrived first, complimentary and delish! The charming atmosphere and delightful exterior drew me and my mom in to have dinner here at Mezcal the other night. We walked inside and it was freezing so we decided to sit outside. It was nice out, however, rather sunny. We had a water pitcher brought over to our table with glasses but the water was lukewarm and not cold and refreshing as I had hoped. I ordered the Mezcal Burrito and when it was brought out, I was overjoyed to dig into a large burrito smothered in sauce until I took the first bite and my mouth was on fire. The flavors of the burrito were very good but the spice level of the sauce was extremely high. As someone who is not a big fan of spicy foods, it was rather difficult for me to eat. I understand it is Mexican food, however, there was no indication of the spice level on the menu or warning from our server. I got it with the "Chicken Tinga" and refried beans and had to eat the insides of the burrito that were not touching the sauce it was smothered in. Taco Tuesday special, hell yeah! Who would have expected a fancy Mexican fusion restaurant to serve $1 street tacos? I decided to try one of each for an amazing, filling $5 lunch. The fresh chips were also delicious and the salsa, while very mild, was also very unique and flavor (though if you don't like cilantro, you will NOT be a fan). The carnitas was my favorite of the five. I also ordered a side of duck fat refried beans because - uh, duck fat refried beans, duh! The Boy, who is quite picky when it comes to Mexican food, was also blown away. The tamale was incredible, the red sauce was delicious. The green chile, much like the salsa, was flavorful if not very hot. He was so impressed by the tamale that he got upset when he learned it wasn't available as an a la carte option. This place is pretty decent. I didn't feel like there was anything spectacular here but definitely had a good time and some good tacos. I went for taco Tuesday and they really have some killer prices on the tacos although even without the special they're still really reasonably priced. My BF and I both had the Chicken Tinga and the Pork Belly tacos and they were both really good. I would have liked to give 3.5 stars if I could because it was good and our server was really nice it just wasn't fantastic to me. I will not return to Mezcal. The service took forever, and the food wasn't worth the wait. After being seated, we waited for 20 min for our waiter to bring chips and salsa to the table. There seemed to be a lot of staff, but our waiter seemed quite rushed, albeit kind and apologetic for the wait. I ordered the carnitas, barbacoa, and fish tacos, and found all to be quite under-seasoned and lacking in any flavor. Luckily the restaurant's stash of salt, pepper and cholula sauce was close by, so I was able to salvage the meal. read more

Mezcal has an awesome Taco Tuesday menu. It consists of drinks and tacos (see my attached photos before you decide to come here). I usually get the carne asada and carnitas. The tacos are a little small, but they definitely have good flavor. They serve plenty of chips and salsa before you get your food, and the margaritas are decently strong. They usually have a 45-1hr wait on Tuesday nights, so arrive early or call ahead to get your table reserved. Don't be surprised if the service is a little slow as they get super busy. Just order a few drinks and chat with your friends. The food is worth it. Tacos are only a dollar. Check them out! read more

I do not see a way to delete my last review, so I am updating. I had previously stated that the food must be garbage because it was ready so quickly. I apologize for stating this. It was dramatic and unnecessary! The manager did decide to refund my money. But that's not why I updated my review. Having never eaten there decided to try it out in person, i.e., put my money where my mouth was. Allow me to reassure you that the food is NOT garbage. My friend and I ordered margs...multiples, actually. They were very, very good. We ordered guac/chips. Again, wonderful. The guac was spiced properly. It was super creamy and delightful. The chips were warm and tasty. We ordered enchiladas for our entrée. Again, exceptional! Our wait person, Matt, was Uber professional, attentive, and pleasant. Outstanding service on his part. It was 100% a great experience. If anyone knows how to delete a previous review, please let me know. Mezcal certainly didn't deserve that! read more

Taco TUESDAY!! What a way to keep your week going! Came in with a large group for a birthday. It was about 7pm and their wait time was 45 minutes (but we were lucky enough to get an exception to make a reservation). It was pretty packed in there, so be forewarned--people know where to go. We got drink orders in and taco orders in quickly, our waiter was attentive and quick. Got the chips and salsa (which, yes, it is an extra buck--but why not!) and a house margarita with tejin on the rim (if you don't do this...just try it). The margarita has a great flavor and is well balanced between lime, agave, and tequila--although I wouldn't be mad if it were a bit stronger. Our tacos--DELICIOUS! After leaving I immediately regretted not getting more tacos although those 3 were super filling. The chicken was warm and juicy. The Carnitas -- tender, flavorful, melt in your mouth good. And the steak, mmm wonderful. Definitely come in for taco tuesday! I do also enjoy this places to grab a drink or two because the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. read more

Slop. That's the word that comes to mind when I think about the food from here. I got the Living Social deal for Mezcal for $10 worth of take out or delivery and used it yesterday. I was coming back to Denver from some hiking and was in major need of some food and figured why not save some money by using my Living Social deal? I ordered online which is an absolutely fantastic perk that Mezcal has going on for them. It took me maybe two minutes to complete the order and bam, got a confirmation email saying it would be ready in 30 minutes. That seemed a little steep for a combination meal but no worries, I would go in early just in case. I got there and there was a good amount of people there for lunch time on Saturday afternoon. I went to the bar, let them know I was there to pickup and the food was already there, so suck on that 30 minutes! I went home and was ready to dive into my food. I got the combination plate with one chile relleno, enchilada and tamale and when I opened up the box, felt like a dark cloud was set over me. All three items were in the box however they were swimming in what seemed to be dark, flavorless, enchilada sauce. Why they put sauce ON TOP of the items for a to go order absolutely baffles me and even though I was disappointed, I was more hungry that anything so I dug in, hoping to be wowed by the food. I wasn't. All three items (and the sauce it was residing in) was flavorless and kind of tasted all the same even though the tamale was pork and enchilada, chicken. But still, the main factor was the sauce, why was it swimming in a bland sauce? Why didn't they put it on the side? I'm still bummed about it too because I had high hopes for Mezcal given their warm, eclectic atmosphere and happy hour specials. The great Muhammad Ali once said "A rooster crows only when it sees the light. Put him in the dark and he'll never crow. I have seen the light and I'm crowing." I wish I was still in the dark when it comes to Mezcal, both the tequila and the restaurant. My acquaintance and enlightenment with the tequila came while in college; it was only this week that I was illuminated about Mezcal, the restaurant. I have been to Mezcal several times in the past several years to enjoy the hedonistic pleasures of tasting the many types of tequila that are offered and what usually goes with a few tequilas, a quite lively bar scene. The buzz, which starts at happy hour and runs as long as your stamina and liver can hold up, or you leave with some dazzling enchantress who is only more enhanced by those 'tequila goggles' is a great reason to go to Mezcal. Good times for sure. My most recent visit was different. The sun was up, it was lunchtime, there wasn't any tequila quaffing, or any margarita imbibing for that matter; I was here to meet a few fellow Yelpers for my first lunch club. Under the harsh light of day and completely sober, one tends to notice a lot more. A whole lot more it turns out. The restaurant was almost empty at noon and we did not have any trouble getting a table for 6 set up. When I sat down, my first observation was that the table surface was sticky. That's not a pleasant tactile experience. When I went to grab the plastic squeeze bottle which was on the table, in order to add some smoky sauce to augment the chips and salsa I was eating, it too was sticky. I don't have an expectation that restaurants meet the hygienic standards of Florence Nightingale, but I do demand that the surfaces that I touch and those which touch my food be clean. The service in my opinion was curious; it wasn't that it was bad it was just a little strange. It wasn't speedy and it wasn't slow. It wasn't the best of times or the worst of times...sorry got carried away. Our server took our order without writing down anything which always worries me, especially since we had asked for separate checks. When the food arrived, it was delivered by several other servers who had to auction off each of the dishes; I personally HATE that and it makes me ask what the point of table service is if you're going to do that? Surprisingly all the correct choices arrived and our separate checks were handled correctly. My choice for lunch was Huevos Rancheros since I had my usual breakfast, which consisted of way too much coffee and nothing else, and it just seemed to suit what I craved. At Mezcal you get your eggs the way you want them so I chose over easy - they were perfectly cooked. Unfortunately they were covered with an overabundance of a rather mild Guajillo Chile sauce and were served atop two corn tortillas. The accompaniment was the predictable rice and refried beans that tasted very pedestrian and thus subsequently remained on the plate. The dish was bland and unimaginative. I didn't hear any oohs and ahhs from the rest of my fellow diners as they ate their lunches, and thus I suspect that they too had the same reaction, or rather lack of a reaction to their food. No Yelper is shy when it comes to giving voice to something they really like or dislike so the silence in this case was deafening. Here's what I would suggest: get your party pants on and go out to Mezcal for HH and some great tequilas and an evening of fun and you will like this place just fine. 2 stars for a dining experience and 4 stars for a night of debauchery. read more

Great place to grab a bite to eat or beer with some chips and salsa. They have free chips and amazing homemade salad, so it makes it the perfect place to have a beer or margarita. They have a nice outdoor area, plenty of seating, and a nice bar area. If you enjoy tequila, they have a great selection. read more

The servers are always sitting down at the bar eating food, they will stop eating to tend to you but never wash their hands. Huge Mezcal Fan. Mezcal is our go-to neighborhood mexican spot. Drinks are amazing and love their margaritas ($8 for a pretty decent sized marg is great in my book). Their salsa is actually legendary, roasted peppers and tomatoes make it bold and filled with a LOT of flavor. Tacos are good, maybe not as good as the chips & salsa which is my favorite in Denver. Patio is great and we've never had an issue grabbing a spot outside. Service excellent as well, staff is always super friendly. I can guarantee we will keep making Mezcal our go-to. read more

After waiting so long to have a safe indoor meal, we chose Mezcal from previous visits that were satisfying enough to draw us back. Unfortunately, the $80 meal (including tip) was a complete disappointment! Both Chili relleno plates were served 5 minutes after ordering, but cold, and had to be returned. Even after " warming up" the relleno, beans and rice were still not hot and rather dried up. The pitcher of Margaritas ( we were told the pitcher was a better "deal") was very weak: could barely taste any Tequila. Overall the service was so-so : pretty apathetic. They have a select menu for their Taco Tuesday, which include your Pretty standard tacos: carnitas, chicken, asada, etc. It also includes discounted margs. My friends and I also ordered desserts! There was flan, sopapillas, and I think churros and ice cream. All were super good. Pretty simple review - everything was great! Food is really great, came in expecting that the food would be Americanized Mexican food, but was pleasantly surprised that the food was authentic. It was really good, especially the queso fundido. The main course was also really good as well, and the portions are very large, could barely finish my food. Went in on taco Tuesday, and was told the wait would be 30 minutes. 1 hour later, and we were still waiting for a table. Several other parties arriving after us were seated first. Finally our table was ready, and our server informed us 'she wasn't ready' to take our order. Mezcal is a gem of a restaurant. Its ambience, cleanliness, friendly and efficient staff and hands down, fresh authentic amazing food. We come regularly for pastor tacos (which are the best in town, in our opinion) with a few potential restaurants coming in where we will go just to change it up. Their tinga is unique and flavor packed that is far from dry, my experience everywhere else, the chicken is dry and bland, not at Mezcal! Their asada taco, marinated to perfection and again with a unique flavor that sets it above many other places we have had it. If you like pozole, they do a red, and while you can get pretty good pozole that is quite authentic at a place down on Larimer/27th (it's good, real good for their verde), we always come back to Mezcal for their red pozole. It's packed with flavor, and absolutely delicious to eat, summer, winter, doesn't matter. Chips, light, freshly served hot, and crisp, their fajitas...hands down delish. Will leave it there as the other food reviews shared here, give enough to know you should come here! This family owned establishment welcomes you as you're one of theirs, they take pride in putting their best in service and cook food as if they are feeding it to their most cherished. And your belly will thank you!
