(4/4/26) It's been seven years since we were last here. My wife said that the menu had changed. I didn't give it much of a glance. Only two potential items stood out to me, the huevos ranchero & the crab cakes Benedict. I chose the crab cakes. My wife ordered avocado toast. When the crab cakes arrived and I tasted them, I knew why I hadn't come back. They had absolutely no seasoning. I left them on the plate. My wife's avocado toast suffered from the same lack of seasoning. What a disappointment. The service was pretty quick. There really wasn't much ambience to speak of. read more

Nice. Solid. Easy. I love how you can order breakfast all day long. Since I had lunch for breakfast, it only made sense that I compensate with breakfast for lunch. My colleague and I were seated without any wait, even though the place is very popular. Lots of windows contribute to the full diner experience. I went with the breakfast sandwich and was readily accommodated when I asked to swap the default scrambled eggs with over easy. The waitress gave us lots of napkins in anticipation of a gloriously messy lunch. I ran through those quickly and she gladly supplied us with more. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and will certainly be back soon. So many delicious options to choose from. read more

Yummy, as usual. My son had a breakfast bowl. My daughter and I had a croissant sandwich. The waffles are good plain, with strawberry butter or my fave, with nuts and cinnamon. I don't remember what they call it but it's pretty good. I tried the southern pecan coffee today. I'll definitely be getting it again. There was a waiter or manager that kept zipping around the floor. I know they get busy but breaking out in a sprint is a little alarming sometimes. Maybe less coffee for that guy next Sunday? Dined here Friday morning of Memorial Day Weekend for breakfast. Restaurant was busy but was given a table quickly. It was six of us so we had a variety of food but I didn't get a picture of everything. I love how the kitchen is open and you can see the food being prepared and picked up by the waiters. I had pancakes, eggs, grits and bacon and enjoyed it all. My boyfriend had the steak bowl and it was delicious. My son enjoyed his waffle. My mom's chicken and waffles were banging. 10/10 service! Everyone was so kind there! The food 10/10! I had their pumpkin waffle special. The waffle was topped with cinnamon spice butter and a cream cheese icing drizzle. It literally didn't need any of that. The waffle was so tasty by itself. However, it became a decadent sweet treat the teetered between breakfast and dessert. My son has the croissant French toast. Thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Metro diner. The food was delicious and the customer service was even better. I went with my young son, teenaged niece and nephew on a packed Friday evening. It was about a 15 to 20 minutes wait for a table so we decided to stay in matthews vs riding to the Charlotte location which expressed no wait when I called. I got the chicken dinner which was absolutely delicious. More than possibly expected to eat in one meal. My nephew opted for a bacon croissant with home fried potatoes. With my little one getting chicken tenders with fries. The only person to experience an issue with their meal was my niece. Her burger was incorrect and upon realization the server (Jennifer) apologized and tried correcting the problem. Moments later a man appearing to be in management came over to apologize and explained how they do not work that way. He promptly removed the burger from the bill to our amazement. We didn't ask nor expect for that to happen. Aside from the good being delicious the service will take them far. Treat yourself while in the area. I look forward to experimenting with the menu on future visits. read more

Since the building's humble beginnings in 1938 and its revival as Metro Diner in 1992, Jacksonville's favorite place for breakfast has been serving satisfied guests for nearly 25 years. In 2000, master chef Mark Davoli and family took over and elevated the menu to include innovative new dishes created from local ingredients. Along with culinary creativity, the Davoli family brought more than 80 years of combined restaurant experience to Metro Diner. I'm a bit of a Reuben enthusiast and have enjoyed them at delis and diners in places like Philadelphia and New York, and Landmark's was outstanding--perfectly grilled, incredibly flavorful, and absolutely hit the spot. The service was just as memorable as the food. My server was warm and attentive, the host was welcoming, and the manager was gracious enough to let me substitute a small Karpen Island Salad instead of the full-size portion. My friend was not happy with the service nor the cost of the scallops . The manager did not really know how to handle the situation but because I invited everyone I wanted to make it right and I asked to pay part of her bill and of course my friend denied and said it'd be best. If we just not come back she said the food wasn't bad the food was actually good however, the waitress was definitely not as friendly focused as she should have been and not willing to help make our experience the best I will say the manager should have been able to accommodate her request and move forward and be kind and understand her point. I will be back and I would love for my friends to come back. The ambiance was very nice and the drinks and food were good as well. Given the price and reputation from my past experiences, I was expecting top tier service, food, and ambience with a quality of fish second to none in the area. Let's break it down: We had a table of 3 and each ordered the signature tasting ($60 pp, a drink, and 2 extra items (one tuna roll and the Australian wagyu hot rock, ~$20 each) 1. Service Our waitress was kind and professional, but the overall cohesion of the staff seemed off and the wait times between courses was sporadic and often too long. It took about 30 minutes from ordering to get our first course which was... a salad wrap. Not only did this seem way too long, but it was extremely underwhelming for a top tier tasting menu experience (will come back to this in the food section). After that, some courses came out overlapping each other, and some were 10-15 min apart. This made it feel less like a fine dining tasting experience and more disorganized. On top of that, the server bringing the food to the table would explain each course in a rush and we could not hear them, meaning we did not know much about each dish. Lastly, our water was consistently empty and previous corse dishes were left on the table when new ones were served, which is a minor thing but should be standard at a fine dining restaurant. Knowing how blown away I was in Austin by the original restaurant, the overall service left me feeling disappointed in bringing my friends and hyping up the place for such an expensive meal. 2. Food Our tasting menu consisted of 7 courses including a salad wrap, tuna hamachi (cold), a sea bream role, ponzu glazed salmon (hot), 2 pieces of nigiri per person, brussel sprouts, and a dessert. Having 2 of 6 core dishes be a salad and veggie at a renowned seafood restaurant was disappointing, and these did not blow me a way at all and were average at best (salad was uninteresting, brussels were cold and too saucy). The sea bream role was also just average, but the tuna hamachi, salmon, and nigiri were excellent. I felt that the portion size was small for 3 people, it was marginally bigger than a 2 person tasting and that was also slightly disappointing. We each got to choose our own dessert which was nice and included a guava and banana cake which were excellent but much too big compared to the portions of the core dishes. We also ordered the additional tuna crunchy roll and hot rock wagyu which were excellent, and a much better value than the tasting portions. Overall, the food was still good, but I distinctly remember the few times I went to the Austin restaurant being absolutely blown away by the food quality, uniqueness, and menu selection, which was not the case here. I hope this improves in the future. 3. Ambience The adaptive reuse space was awesome and the look of the place is stellar. I loved how much seating and bar space there was and the overall lighting and mood was great. The only complaint I have here is that it was very loud making it hard to hear servers and each other over conversation. No one wants to be shouting over the ambient noise when paying $100+ for a meal. For context, we are late 20s, we are not shy to louder bars and restaurants, this was especially noisy. In general, I believe this place has a ton of potential and I really hope it improves in quality and value before I come back again. At present, I would not recommend the tasting menu and instead opt for individual dishes.

I stopped by Metro Diner on Pineville-Matthews Rd for brunch last weekend, and I'm so glad I did. The place has that warm, welcoming vibe -- like a classic diner but with a bit more charm. The staff greeted me right away and were super friendly and attentive throughout my meal. I ordered the chicken and waffles, which I'd heard great things about, and it did not disappoint! The chicken was crispy and perfectly seasoned, and the waffles were fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness. I also tried their coffee, which was surprisingly good -- fresh and strong, not your typical diner brew. What I liked most was how fast everything came out, even though the place was pretty busy. You can tell the team there works really well together. Prices are reasonable too, especially considering the portion sizes -- I couldn't even finish my plate. If you're in the area and craving a hearty breakfast or brunch, Metro Diner is definitely worth checking out. They never took our order or even spoke to us( even though they checked in with the next table 3 times while we waiting for service). We finally got up and left. Management did not seem to care... Unacceptable! Went to another restaurant close by for dinner. They lost us as customers. My daughter has dined here for lunch a few times as she works down the street. My family and I decided to take on the challenge of going out for breakfast with a toddler and a baby with a dairy allergy. Any dairy-free breastfeeding mama would know that finding a dairy free option in a breakfast menu is near to impossible. The wait staff was a bit uneven ( 5 minutes for an initial waiter to show, then we ordered and he disappeared again for quite some time). The turkey was moist and tasty but my mashed potatoes were almost too cold to eat. My wife said the fish was just a tad too greasy. She gets fried fish often and is a snob about the dish. I have no complaints about my pancake and turkey sausage. The thing I liked most about this place was that there were many choices on the menu, and the prices were reasonable. Finally, a place you can enjoy that has good food, a nice atmosphere and won't cost you an arm and a leg. This is closest to a real diner that I've eaten at in a long time. As we waited for our food to come out (which didn't take long at all), we noticed other waitstaff delivering amazing-looking food to tables. Our mouths were watering!! We will definitely be back. The Vicious biscuit is the size of a hamburger bun. It is soft and there are bits of spice in the dough. These biscuits do not fall apart, but stay together and serve to soak up the wonderful sausage gravy that is poured on top of it. You can order just a biscuit with gravy for $8. And if you are timid, start here. Otherwise, there are add-ons like very good fried chicken, shrimp and grits, ham, pulled smoked pork, crab, bacon, fried shrimp. fried eggs and other combos. Super choices, so take time to study the menu which is extensive. Portions are great, very generous. I had their Vicious ($12). It was their Cheddar jalapeño biscuit, crispy fried chicken, maple sausage gravy, cowboy candy, with maple syrup drizzle. I was hesitant as to the maple syrup, but it is just enough to give accent to the gravy, but not super sweet. Wife had Fried Green 'Maters ($9.50) which were four fried green tomatoes, their signature pimento cheese with a pickled okra garnish. She could not eat it all, so I helped finish off the lone tomato and a bit of the cheese. Very good. I told the hostess we were leaving after being ignored, and her response was "see ya." No apology, no attempt to fix it--just complete indifference. Another customer nearby even said, "not professional today, are we?" which pretty much said it all. To make things worse, the restroom was disgusting. The only available stall (the handicapped stall) was filthy and completely unusable. That alone should have been a red flag for how this place is being managed. I called afterward and spoke with the manager on duty, Johnny, to get contact information for the district manager--and was given the wrong number. I had to call a different First Watch just to get the correct one. That's not just poor service--that's incompetence. I actually like First Watch as a brand, which makes this even more frustrating. But this location is clearly poorly run and getting worse, not better. Save yourself the time and go to the Matthews location instead. This one isn't worth the hassle.
