As I walked in, the heavy metal door clipped my toe, causing a deep cut that immediately started bleeding profusely. There was blood everywhere. Still in shock, I looked at the host and asked, "Um...where's the bathroom?" He awkwardly pointed me in the right direction. Once inside the restroom, I found there were no paper towels and the sink was dirty, making it even more difficult to clean the wound. My daughter grabbed napkins while I searched for someone who could help or provide a first aid kit. I stood there bleeding, with other customers looking on uncomfortably, while no employee checked on me. Eventually, an employee asked if I needed something. I calmly asked for a first aid kit. I was trying to hold myself together and was on the verge of tears. After some time, he located one and essentially tossed it toward my daughter. He seemed visibly annoyed rather than concerned. No one asked if I was okay, offered assistance, or showed even a small amount of empathy. Once I was able to get the bleeding under control enough to walk, I left in tears and returned to my hotel to properly clean and bandage my foot. Not a single employee checked on me before I left. In fact, it felt like everyone simply disappeared. Because of the incident, I can't comment on the food. However, I can comment on the customer service, and it was incredibly disappointing. Accidents happen--I don't blame the restaurant for that. What I do blame is the complete lack of compassion, urgency, and basic concern shown toward an injured guest who was actively bleeding in the middle of the restaurant. I'm not someone who leaves negative reviews lightly, and I'm certainly not looking for special treatment. I simply expected a little kindness and concern. A simple "Are you okay?" or "Can we help you?" would have gone a long way. Instead, my 12-year-old daughter was the only person helping me while the staff seemed inconvenienced by the situation. Based on this experience, I can't recommend supporting a business that responds to an injured customer with such indifference.

I choose the Crack of Dawn Diner in Concord. I am so glad I did. Crack of Dawn Diner is the real thing--a local Concord breakfast-and-lunch spot serving traditional Southern fare at reasonable prices. The menu caters to local tastes, the dining room is filled with regulars, and the atmosphere is comfortable rather than trendy. Parking is somewhat limited. The private lot surrounding the restaurant was fully used so I parked in the lot next door that had signs that said private property, but it looked like other patrons were parking there also so I took the chance. As it turns out, it was safe to park there. The entrance is very welcoming, as well as the staff. Amanda was my very efficient and nice waitress. There is great teamwork here, and Amanda was well supported by, I believe, the owner who ran my food out and talked a bit with me. The menu is fascinating. A distinctly North Carolina menu. Several things jumped out: * Breakfast special for $6.59 weekdays * Breakfast plates mostly under $12 * Grits included as a side option * Livermush available * City ham and country ham both offered * Pork chops available for breakfast I ordered the country-fried steak with white gravy (essentially chicken-fried steak), along with two sunny-side-up eggs, perfectly prepared grits, a large buttermilk biscuit, and a delicious diner coffee. The restaurant occupies a stand-alone building with a warm, "come on in and rest a spell" atmosphere. Inside, you'll find counter seating, an open kitchen, and tables throughout the dining room. I chose a seat by the window overlooking the parking area. This was a great breakfast, that was reasonably priced, in a great atmosphere, with very nice people. It stuck to both my mind and ribs all day long. After breakfast, I continued on to downtown Concord and spent some time exploring one of North Carolina's most charming revitalized downtown districts. The breakfast was the perfect start to the morning. Crack of Dawn Diner has earned a spot on my repeat list whenever my travels take me through the Charlotte-Concord area.
