I had a business meeting at Metro Cafe yesterday, and it was a really great experience. The service was impeccable - various staff come by at intervals and all were helpful and incredibly friendly. I was literally there having meetings for three hours, but it was not a problem and I never felt rushed. I had a chai latte and it was delicious: the right amount of sweet but not too strong and spicy. I ended up having three - "keep 'em coming!" When I finally ordered lunch, I got the cheese and ham toasted sandwich - again, very good. I am going to try some other cafes in Dublin this week, but I imagine I shall be coming back to this one! read more

Last weekend, my boyfriend, my dog and I were looking for a nice outdoor place to have food/brunch at 2pm. Coming from Stephens green park, we pass by south william street and saw the menu of this place with small tables outside. We weren't sure if they were going to be keen to have a dog around. We were about to go to the next place, when this lovely, animal friendly guy got close to us and started talking to Chloe (our 4 leg companion). He made us feel so welcome and he was looking for a table for us, he couldn't have found us better place , we were sitting outside in a covered area, a heater right on top of us that made us feel so cozy. He brought a dog bowl with water for Chloe, then he took our orders, -Bangers and mash, simple but very tasty -Ham cheese and tomato croissant with relish on a side. Very generous and very tasty. After we finish our meal, the waitress also bring bacon for our dog without us asking for it. It was a very nice kind touch from his side. So bottom line, if you are looking for friendly attention, a cozy place to sit either outdoors or indoors, to have a nice tasty meal, and why not if you also feel like bringing your dog for a walk and stop for a coffee, i think you should to go Metro Bar. I like the Metro. I go here a lot. The cake is good, the sandwiches are decent and it's really hard to mess up tea. I'm generally quite happy with the food here. Recently I've had to be in work early and so I'll sometimes stop here for breakfast. I get the same thing each time, each time hoping it'll be good, but each time it's the same. A very generous portion of over-cooked scrambled eggs on (very nice) sourdough bread with relish. The staff are friendly and it's handy for me, but I wouldn't really recommend the scrambled eggs or the pancakes which I'm pretty sure are shop bought rather than homemade. But if you're looking for a place to have a bite of lunch, it's nice and comfortable. read more

Good place to sit for a cup of coffee and watch the foot traffic pass by. During summer it can be extra crowded for tables, as this is right in central south Dublin. Sandwiches and desserts are great too, so if you get hungry watching people or walking, you can find satisfaction in this establishment. This cafe is such a staple in my life that I had almost forgotten to review it. It is one of those places that, for me, holds so many memories it seems almost a part of me. I would say that goes for a lot of Dubliners. Going to Metro Cafe as a teenager I felt so sophisticated and worldly; sitting outside, sipping a coffee, imagining I was in some French new wave film. I don't know how I have never reviewed Metro Cafe before considering how often I've been over the years. This is a really busy spot and one of my favorites in the city for people watching. There are loads of spaces outside, however, they can be hard to get. Inside is very cosy.... but great during the winter for a comforting cup of coffee. I ordered myself a smoked salmon bagel that came with either coffee or tea for €11.50. Nothing too special, thought the eggs could use a little bit more seasoning and was slightly over thus it was slightly too dry for my liking. I know this is a pretty well known place but I had never been here before Saturday! Two of us wanted something breakfast/brunch-y around 1, and we tried Busyfeet next door before being told they had stopped serving breakfast - so relocated! It was busy at that time but we were seated right away, service was fast and polite, and our food came out really quickly after we ordered. Portion size on the meal was slightly disappointing, but the food was hot and fresh and tasty so no complaints! Also if anyone ever wants to tell me how an "American style" bagel differs from a regular bagel, I'd be much obliged to you... As far as I can tell, it means they serve it to you with Philadelphia cream cheese?? Which of course is normal in the States but not necessarily exclusive to?? Anyways tangent... The almond and apple tart was nice. Somewhat more the consistency of a muffin than a tart but tasted great and decent size. Sorry no pictures - we were completely in the hanger zone when we got the food so cleaned it all up within an almost indecently short amount of time. All in all, regular café experience, nothing extraordinary but a nice place with fast service and breakfast ALL DAY which is key. read more

I've been to this place a few times over the years, just for coffee and maybe a muffin and always thought it was OK. The staff was always really nice. However I was there last Saturday with a friend. We both had the bagel with smoked salmon and scramble eggs. There was plenty of smoked salmon, I can't complain about that but the whole thing was a bit dry. The eggs were too cooked and a bit of salad on the side wouldn't have hurt. My plate just looked sad. Not bad place altogether but I won't be having breakfast there. One of the cafes I'd pop into on a regular basis when about town. Whether it's coffee and cake your after, or a hearty lunch, the Metro Cafe won't disappoint. The menu is quite extensive offering meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and personally, I feel it's reasonably priced. It's always a good sign when a restaurant/cafe is busy and the Metro is almost always that. The setting is ideal too, and the decor charming to say the least. It's a warm, inviting and quaint cafe that's always buzzing. The staff are friendly and incredibly accommodating always making you feel welcome, even when they're up the walls. Overall, it's a great spot with lovely people and a great atmosphere, I'd recommend it to anyone. read more

I had the yogurt with berries and a house made granola bar. It came with a little honey on the side, but I found it to be sweet enough on its own. My husband had the corn beef hash. He said it was "hearty, flavorful and satisfying." We both had tea with it. They use Barry's and they made it with really hot water, the way it should be. Our service was very good. I met some colleagues here for coffee on a cold afternoon - 2 words: Hot Chocolate The hot chocolate was a perfect balance of chocolate and milk served not only with whip cream but pretty tiny white and pink marsh-mellows on the side. The pairing was delightful. The ambiance is cozy (though a bit cramped) and the service is excellent. The cafe feels "lived in" in the right way. I've always wanted to pop in here for lunch or dinner but I only found the time to the other night. It was a rainy evening and it looked so inviting. I sat outside and watched the city through the rain over a tasty chopped chicken salad, a delicious death by chocolate cake served with fresh cream and a good cup of coffee. Hands down my favourite coffee shop in the world. Yes, it's flawed in many ways, for example the weather could be better, but these are things beyond my control. It was probably the Parisian theme and outdoor seating that lured me here at first. I believe I was reading Hemingway at the time and was feeling rather sophomoric. Whatever the reason, I ordered a cappuccino and never left. It's been four years and I still come back here almost everyday. In the intervening time things have changed, I've changed; I drank cappuccino to begin with and decided they were too foamy; I drank regular coffees and decided they were too bland; I drank espresso for awhile but decided they were too pretentious; so I went back to regular coffees because they are cheap. I suppose, in essence, what made me stay is that the potential for people-watching from under the wide awning is unparalleled even on rainy days, the location is ideal and the staff are ever so charming and intelligent. read more

As for the food, they failed the test for me completely: As I was meeting one of my friends for our Thursday morning brunch, she expressed the desire to try Metro instead of the establishment across the road which we would usually frequent. I'm one of those people who never get sick of the same thing over and over again, as long as it's tasty. I'd rather not be disappointed. But I'm a good friend and I agreed to go on this crazy experiment. I ordered scrambled eggs on toast. I saw the plate come my way: a heap of yellow scrambles on very thick bread and I thought: "Oh yeah.... An egg orgy". The plate came down and I thought the colour was a bit off at first. It looked evenly dark yellow, as though they had whipped the eggs before scrambling them. Ok, whatever. It also looked a bit like plastic. The taste was dreadful! And the texture... unmistakable. These eggs were not fresh! They were not picked out of a tray, broken and scrambled on a pan. Nope. No way. This place can't even bother to make eggs fresh for you. They'd rather defrost a zip-locked bag of pre-mixed egg. We should always expect fresh eggs! We should always expect a minimum. Come on Dublin people, complain a little! Don't just take it! I love this place, the patio or outside the place is always buzzing. The place is great, a real lived in place, but clean. The food is amazing... I usually get the Louisiana Chicken but their specials are very good, and the service is pretty fast. My favourite thing about the place is the coffees, althought the price of an espresso is a little expensive considering a late is only 20c more for a large espresso. and the single shot is €1.90. But the staff are friendly and they all have amazing customer service. If there are any issues they will always fix it. The staff get to know their customers and regular customers, which is good to see. read more

This gem of a café is full of atmosphere, bustle and great food. Located on the corner of South William Street, it has a tasty menu including great lunch deals and some of the best coffee in town. The atmosphere of the café is difficult to match in the city especially as lunch time is usually full and the option of sitting outside makes it a superb place to people watch and spot a celebrity or two. I ordered a Chicken with Dijon Mustard ciabatta with a large cappuccino, which was delicious. Aside from the food, the café has real character and you wouldn't be surprised if it was used as a location for a movie some day. The understated décor is littered with quotes from Sinatra and Thoreau adding to the sophisticated nature of the place. These quotes allow moments of reflection amidst the busy café goings on. This, coupled with the city centre bustle feel, friendly staff and great food make the Metro a joy to return to. read more

My entire party had a wonderful time at Metro Cafe and enjoyed their delicious food. We were lured in by a very friendly waiter who was standing by the entrance. He didn't try to pressure us to dine there and he also gave his local expertise on local bars to check out. Judging from other reviewers, it seems like everyone stops by Metro Cafe for breakfast or lunch. I was there for dinner and I would definitely recommend the beef & Guinness pie (which is not listed on their website). My husband had the beef & Guinness pie and when I tried some of his, I immediately thought that I made a mistake with my dinner selection. I had the fish pie, which was also delicious, but it was nothing in comparison. It was a delicious beef stew with a flakey puff pastry on top. I think for the portion size, the price is fine. The pancakes were quite good but I was a bit disappointed with the syrup, considering it was golden syrup with maple flavour and not real maple syrup. Sorry, I grew up in Canada and I have standards. I make it a point to visit Metro Café on every Dublin visit. I go for the full Irish breakfast, which is one of the best versions of this venerable standard around. The bacon is plentiful, the sausages are juicy and well seasoned, the eggs perfectly cooked, and mushrooms and cherry tomatoes (two of the latter) balance out all the protein. One of the unsung heroes of this dish is the very good bread, which comes toasted. The coffee is very good. I have two observations, however. The first is that the price is very expensive. When a "full Irish breakfast" in central touristy Dublin can be had for €9 or 10, Metro charges €13. I guess you get what you pay for, but 4 euros today over the "full Irish" that I had yesterday makes me think twice about whether the Mighty Metro is really worth it. If money is no object, then this is the place to order the full Irish. From the looks of the other customers, it appears that this is often a stopping place in the morning for rather well-heeled business people. My second observation relates to service. Most of the other reviews on this site commend the friendly service, including that customer who got bacon brought for their dog. My experience was very different. No one asked if I wanted a coffee or water refill. I did get a wave from the Asian cook, so points for him. But otherwise, the service ended when my meal was placed in front of me. Perhaps it was incumbent upon me to request refills. read more
